Liverpool’s breathless start to the summer transfer window showed no sign of abating in the wake of Roberto Firmino’s £29 million switch to Anfield. The former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder – who became Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close season – recently shot to prominence with Brazil in the Copa America, netting the Selecao’s winner against Venezuela in the group stages of the tournament.

Discussing his move with the Hoffenheim official website, the 23-year-old vowed to nail down a starting berth with the Anfield outfit:

“First and foremost, I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I’m excited to see what the Premier League has to offer. Of course everything will once again be new to me at the start. I’m going to have to get used to a new playing style, but I’ll also get the opportunity to improve my game even further there. Obviously I’d like to establish myself as a starter in my new team and go on to celebrate a lot of success at Liverpool.”

The History

A Brazil native, Firmino was born in Maceio and started out at his local club, CRB (Clube de Regatas Brasil). Five years of training ensued, before he teamed up with Serie B (second tier of Brazilian football) outfit Figueirense in 2008. Firmino broke into the senior side in October 2009 and netted eight goals in 36 appearances during his one full season with the Hurricanes, who earned promotion into the top flight.

Firmino’s exploits in South America alerted a number of suitors across the Atlantic, with Hoffenheim shaking off the competition to land the midfielder on a five-year deal. Firmino joined at the midway point of the 2010/11 season and went on to net three goals in 11 appearances from an advanced central role.

Building on this solid foundation, Firmino tallied 11 goals and seven assists across the subsequent two Bundesliga campaigns. The 2013/14 season served up the greatest riches, though, with the Brazilian starlet amassing an impressive 16 goals in 33 league outings, ranking third in the scoring charts behind Marco Reus (30) and Robert Lewandowski (31). In addition, he registered 12 assists that term and bagged six goals in four cup fixtures.

Firmino’s final campaign at the Rhein-Neckar Arena produced ten goals and 12 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions. His laudable domestic displays were rewarded with a debut senior cap for Brazil in November against Turkey, which swiftly led on to his debut goal against Austria less than a week later. More recently, Firmino guided Brazil through to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a close-range strike against Venezuela.

The Prospects

With the signing of Danny Ings and now Firmino, Rodgers is clearly searching for a solution to Liverpool’s relative paucity of goals last term, given that the Merseysiders chalked up 49 fewer without Luis Suarez spearheading their attack. Aside from netting 33 times in 73 outings over the past two seasons, the Brazil international also created more chances (138) than any other Bundesliga player over that stretch and directly contributed to 45 goals in his previous 66 appearances – illustrating his creative prowess.

As for his potential role within Rodgers’ set-up, Firmino primarily operated as a traditional number ten at Hoffenheim but was also comfortable lining up on the left flank – with Germany’s U21 star Kevin Volland on the opposing wing – or employing his pace as the central forward in a 4-3-3. It’s worth noting, however, that all seven of his league goals last season arrived when he was deployed in “the hole”.

With Raheem Sterling looking set for pastures new, Firmino is likely to be handed a central support role behind a lone striker, though as we saw last season, that could be in a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The former system could see him twinned with Philippe Coutinho in the advanced roles, with Ings or, potentially, transfer target Christian Benteke spearheading the Reds’ attack until Daniel Sturridge finally recovers from injury.

On that note, Firmino’s impeccable injury record would doubtless have been factored into Liverpool’s thinking in light of Sturridge’s recurring layoffs. The Brazil international has missed just one league outing in each of the past three Bundesliga seasons, which suggests he’s made of sterner stuff that the former Chelsea striker when it comes to avoiding knocks and niggles.

It’s worth noting that Firmino and Coutinho were handed three weeks off due to their recent showings in the Copa America and still have another week or so before they link up with their team-mates.

At 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though, Firmino’s reputation clearly precedes him. Given that Coutinho sets you back 8.0 and Jordan Henderson – who could well be handed spot-kicks – comes in at just 7.0 along with another new signing, James Milner, there are certainly more budget-friendly options in the Liverpool midfield.

Nonetheless, Firmino’s record in Germany suggests he could wreak havoc in his new surrounds and afford the Merseysiders a much-needed spark in the final third. Whilst the Reds’ first three away fixtures look tricky (sto, ars, mun), Rodgers’ side are handed four very obliging home matches (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the opening seven Gameweeks which more than atone for those road trips and could easily see the new boy hit the ground running.

I very much so doubt that. He's an addition who, after settling for a few seasons in Germany, added a good few goals for his team which Pool need.

A lot of talk and RMT about having Hazard, Aguero and Costa/Ronney from the begining if Kun is declared to be ready for GW1.
I'm waiting to see what's going to happen once Sanchez is declared fit and ready for GW1 as well 😀
There was so much talk how cheap are players this season and how easy is to assemble a great and "balanced team" 🙂
I guess the prices are spot on where it really matters! Hehe 😉

It's going to to be extremely difficult to pick a team at the beginning if all "premium players" (above 10m) are available for GW1

The more I read about Ritchie the more I like him. Have him as my 4th mid currently, his position aside, I can see him having a Charlie Austin effect to the PL.

Bottomed out on the last page:

    Morning chaps,

What do you think of this for a ridicously early / likely to change 100 times 1st draft!?

    Butland / Speroni

    Ivan / Cedric / Cresswell / Olsson / Francis

    Henderson / Fab / Henderson / Mane / Anya

    Deeney / Rooney / Costa

then when aguero is in either rooney / costa will be replaced with Mane likely to be downgraded to fund.

    any thoughts appreciated

And speaking about cheap mids anyone going for Redmond as their 4th mid(abdi as 5th for me)? or is he just a lil too expensive at 5.5? always exciting to watch and has experience in the EPL(though he did flatter to deceive though he played well). all grown up now though and could do really well. apart from Abdi i dont really like any of the mids priced below 6.5 tbh. i got to admit the best part is the flair involved in watching redmond over the likes of ki etc..

Which mid to start the season with ?
    Mata, Walcott or Ramsey

Walcott has the greatest potential (could you ever see the other two scoring hat tricks?) but possible doubts about his pitch time, though that might well be the case with Mata as well.

Mata got 4 assists in a game for Chelsea. Yes, game time is the only concern otherwise I would have both Walcott and Mata in my team, though I believe both have done enough to be in their respective teams starting XI.

Preseason will probably answer that question...

If Mata's slotted in behind Rooney with Depay or ADM streaking down a wing then he could be an unbelievable bargin at 8.5mil w/ their opening run.

Although, if Sanchez is rested for the first few weeks, then Wally & / or Ramsey could work as well but, I'd again wait to see how each of them if performing heading into the season.

Side note: I feel Giroud is .5 to 1mil too expensive but, he maybe a *safest* ARS pick compared to Walcott (rotation) & Ramsey (injury) though.

Usually a WC hoarder but the WC change rule makes me want to play it early.. So Risks abound with a cheap defense, Redmond/Abdi/Wilson and 2 steady eddies with Ozil/Hendo to facilitate 3 big hitters in Aguero/Rooney/Hazard!

he did miss about 8 or so games(and 6 Clean sheets) though.. Chelsea keepers in total got 159 points last season and they could keep even more CS's if they continue playing like they did after the midway point last season

      2. Pasqualinho

I'm sure this will make some difference - but maybe not as much as people are hoping. In order to get Bonus the defenders still need to keep a clean sheet (in most cases). So, while a Panti CS might, on average, be worth more than a Courtois CS, Courtois will, in all probability, keep more of them. I think the 0.5 price difference makes it very tempting to go for the upgrade - but it's only a tempter - certainly not a no-brainer.

    1st draft...here she goes:

    Guzan / Ruddy
    Mertesacker / Azpi / Morgan / O'Shea / Targett
    Hazard / Walcott / Yaya / Henderson / Wanyama
    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho

0.5M ITB, unsure where to spend it at the moment. Looking to WC pretty early on.

Please feel free to rip it apart...

I'll be bringing in Aguero as soon as he is available. Yaya at 8.5M seems a steal, although I'm a big fan of Silva, so might be tempted to go with him. Cheers for looking.

Like it a lot actually. Might be a bit rich in midfied though. What would be your plan if Aguero/Sanchez start piling up points

If Kun/Sanchez start firing, then I'm hitting the WC button immediately! This team is only set up for the first 4 gameweeks.

So IF Saint dont sign a new CB that gives us Yoshida for 4.5m......

I really hope they dont sign anyone, even with their losses those fixtures and their record would be hard to ignore

Saints continued to get CS's when he was out injured. Quite a high amount i think

But Yoshida would heavily dent all CS potential. It's ok because that situation is irrelevant. Apparently our negotiation team is on overdrive. Clasie to be completed in the next couple of days, a new CB to follow soon.

    2 from Sky

Sky sources also understand that both Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger completed their medicals yesterday and should be on the 2.30pm flight to the USA, with their transfers set to be complete today.

The midfielders will join Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian as United's latest recruits.

Sky sources understand David De Gea will be on Manchester United's flight to USA for their pre-season tour.

We also understand United have received no bid from Real Madrid for the goalkeeper, and won't sell unless they get Sergio Ramos as part of the deal.

Any spurs/chadli fans around? How nailed on is he? Did brilliant uptil Jan or so from what i remember but tailed off after that in form and fpl points.. was it cause of the injury or did he fall out of favor even when he was fit?

We should get an indication prior to GW1. I don't see why he's pour his efforts into an ageing Given when he has a top young GK with bags of potential.
