Following on from Mark’s article about the impact of the changes to Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) Bonus Point System (BPS) I’m now looking to add some depth to the analysis by going back and recalculating BPS scores from last season for every player but using the new BPS scoring methodology. Please click on each picture to see an enlarged version.

The Results

View post on imgur.com

On the left-hand chart I’ve plotted the old BPS scores on the horizontal axis and the new BPS scores on the vertical, while the right-hand chart shows the same for actual bonus points. The black 45 degree line marks the point at which the scoring methodology produces no actual change in outcome. Data points above and to the left of the black line therefore represent an improvement in BPS or bonus points under the new system compared to the old.

This is how the change in BPS scores breaks down between the four different components of the changed methodology of passing, saves, CBI (clearances, blocks and interceptions) and tackles, shown in aggregate for all player appearances last season:

View post on imgur.com

Focusing on BPS points for now, as Mark surmises in his article it is goalkeepers (green data points in the charts) that are clearly favoured by the new system, however this is not necessarily at the expense of defenders, who also show an improvement in overall BPS scores.

For defenders (and to a lesser extent midfielders), the negative impact of reduced pass completion BPS points is more than offset by the gain in tackles and CBI.

But it is the additional point for saves that is the real kicker here; virtually all of goalkeepers’ BPS improvement is down to the additional save points. Swansea’s Lucasz Fabianski, for example, improves his BPS score by 138 overall, 137 of which is represented by the saves he made. This is true across the board for keepers.

Winners and Losers

Let’s have a look at the individuals who show the highest gains and losses in BPS points:

View post on imgur.com

View post on imgur.com

The sea of green (goalkeepers) in the top chart and red (midfielders) in the bottom chart tells its own story.

So how do the new BPS scores translate into actual bonus points? Here’s the list of top winners and losers:

View post on imgur.com

View post on imgur.com

Goalkeepers again clearly show the best improvement. However, look at the first chart above (right-hand chart showing bonus points) and note that the cluster of green data points is focused in the bottom left of the chart, indicating that goalkeepers continue to do relatively poorly in the bonus point stakes as a whole, despite showing the biggest gains in absolute terms.

So Pantilimon, for example, shows the biggest increase in bonus points (moving from 7 to 17), however this still pales into relative insignificance compared to players like Hazard (38 bonus points under the new system, down from 42) or Kane (32 under both systems).

The infamous Arsenal-Sunderland game towards the end of the season was rightly highlighted as an illustration of the unfairness of the old BPS system for goalkeepers. Looking at the impact of the bonus point changes for this game, Pantilimon does indeed benefit, with his eight saves in that game seeing him leapfrog all the Arsenal defenders to pick up the maximum bonus points.

And what of those slick-passing Arsenal centre-backs?

View post on imgur.com

Both Koscielny and Mertesacker do indeed suffer from the reduction in pass completion BPS points. However Koscielny more than makes up for this with CBIs alone and actually improves his overall BPS score. Mertesacker does suffer proportionally more from pass completion, and ends down by 12 BPS points, but in the context of an overall score of 720 BPS points, this is not a large drop.

In terms of bonus points, both are worse off, with Koscielny down by three and Mertesacker down by four points.

View post on imgur.com

Conclusion

What does this mean for team selection? Probably not much. Yes, you might want to spend a little more on goalkeepers, but my key takeaway from this analysis was from the very first chart. Yes there are some winners and losers, but the data points in the chart are clustered relatively tightly around the black 45 degree line.

In other words, the heavy-hitters will continue to pick up the most bonus points while the bargain basement players will by and large continue to do poorly. Furthermore, when you consider that goals, assists and clean sheets continue to be a bigger source of points than the bonus system, I think the impact of the changes will be relatively limited.

One final point on goalkeepers. They tend to score at between 20 and 25 FPL points per 1.0 of starting cost, which means for every 0.5 increase in cost, you would be looking for around 10 to 13 additional FPL points.

Pantilimon has been priced up by 0.5 this season compared to his starting price last season, which means the bulk of his additional bonus points from the new system are already factored into his price. The other big gainers such as Fabianski, Guzan and Schmeichel start at the same price as last season, so their BPS benefit may not have been factored in.

N.B: This analysis won’t be 100% accurate because for double Gameweeks I only have the Opta stats for that Gameweek rather than for each game within that pair of matches. Nonetheless I think that will only have a marginal impact around the edges.

Sensational stuff. Really validates a policy of getting in good goalies in bad teams. If they can keep a clean sheet even better.

I wonder whether the drop in BPS for Hazard etc will be more significant...they will certainly have to work much harder for BPS by the looks of it.

Have a look at saves from the last time Norwich were in the Prem Lg 13/14 I think...gives a good indication as to how Ruddy may do this season.

Maybe thinking of getting Ruddy instead of Myhill..

          Guzan/Myhill

          Coloccini. Francis. Alderweireld. Prodl. Cedric

          Hazard. Depay. Walcott. Yaya. Abdi.

Here's my google doc of basically the same thing.

BAPS tab is a summary of the baps under both systems.
TOTALS tab is the total effect of the new system on each player's BPS scores over the season.
WEEKLY tab is the week-by-week changes of the BPS for each player (so a LOT of data)

I think the whole concept is much fairer. The defenders that do more defending get the bonuses rather than the sideways passers, and this has to be a good thing. And if the CS is down mainly to the GK, then he gets the max bonus. Much, much better.

But I'd contest, to a small extent, Jonty's point that good goalies in bad teams are great, and if they keep a clean sheet then it's even better. I think that the GKs will need clean sheets to get bonus - no CS, limited chance of bonus (as for all defenders last year) - so the clean sheet will still be king, and you still need to pick GKs for their clean sheet ability more than their save points. Not that you should ignore save points, of course.

Going to be interesting to see how it pans out with goalie bonus. What looks key is that defenders and goalies are now marginally more likely to get bonus and midfielders marginally less - which if it happens is a great thing.

I might be wrong but did the Chelsea gk get an extra 8 onus points? That's interesting if so considering we were thinking the gks from smaller teams would do better

Peno saves seem to guarantee bonus now even when conceding. I wish they would have decreased the BPS for that as well

It seems to me a pen save in a 0-0 draw might be worthy of baps. A pen save in a 3-0 win... maybe less so.

As an addendum to the article, I’ve further analysed the impact on defenders, specifically focusing on how centrebacks fare compared to fullbacks:

    http://i.imgur.com/G4OfBnS.jpg

At first glance, the BPS changes don’t seem to have favoured CBs over FBs or vice versa. Baines does slightly better, Coleman does slightly worse. Kolarov and Zabaleta both do slightly better, but Clyne and Bertrand fare slightly worse. Mertesacker and Koscielny lose a bit but Huth and Morgan gain a bit. There really doesn’t seem to be much of a pattern that I can discern, and it just serves to underline my initial impression that the bps changes are not going to have a massive impact beyond some relatively small gains for goalkeepers.

(note: this chart includes only appearances where a defender started as part of a back four. Also, because some defenders played both fullback and centreback at different points of the season, there may be two datapoints for a single player. For both these reasons, some of the recalculated bps and bonus figures won’t tally to the other charts).

Final note: All screenshots in the article come from this Tableau viz: http://tinyurl.com/2015-16BPSanalysis, where you can filter or sort the tables and charts by player, team and position.

Kos and Mert were racking up the points for passing amongst themselves. Its less of a drop to CB's bonus points, and more a drop to CB's who didnt actually do anything.

    2. Ziegler1988
      • 11 Years

I think big team CB's will in general be hurt since they relied more on passing BPS and small team CB's will benefit since they were being forced into more CBIs and having to hoof the ball more

Agreed. And the HBs he mentions like Clyne and Bert didn't really have much influence on CBIs or on def. And Soton kept the ball pretty well, too, for a Prem team. They were pretty much always eager to go up the pitch. Zab and Kolarov got up the pitch some, but also got back and did some real defending.

Would you be able to produce another graph which shows the total points on the axes rather than just bonus points? This would give a good indication of the scale of how the changes make a difference to total score.

      Yep, see here:

      https://public.tableau.com/views/2015-16bpsanalysis/Bypointstype?%3AshowVizHome=no#1

It's a bar chart rather than a scatter plot, but does the same thing.

The differences between the left hand graph (old bps system) and right hand graph (new system) are barely noticeable, which just underlines that the changes are not going to have a massive impact.

Excellent research, but you appear to have combined Phil Jones (9 old baps) and Billy Jones (2 old baps) into a single Jones with 11 baps. What were their separated new baps?

Phil being the one on top and Billy being the one on the second row.

So Phil goes from 9 to 10 bonus points, Billy goes from 2 to 3.

I cant tell if this is good news for potential Pantilimon owners. Yes he gets more bonus points, but not enough to justify the 0.5 spend over O'Shea etc.

Then again, he didn't even get a full season, with Mannone originally #1.

    1. The3rdTurd
      • 14 Years

2 points on Pants man: firstly, as you point out he didn't play the first 10 games. If he had, a simple pro rata would imply he might have been about 13 bonus points better off under the new bps system, which would justify his increased starting price.

Secondly, you should add the proviso "all other things being equal" to all of this analysis. In other words, if you believe Dick will tighten up at the back and Sunderland will pick up more clean sheets, this could more than offset any impact of the bps changes and could mean his starting price is justified.
