Arsenal youngster Chuka Akpom scores three times as the Gunners open their summer schedule in style. Everton and Stoke grind out a goalless draw, Watford’s Odion Ighalo continues his fine pre-season form, whilst West Brom ship three goals for the second successive friendly.

Singapore Select XI 0 Arsenal 4

Chuba Akpom stole the headlines in Arsenal’s first head-to-head of the Barclays Asia Trophy, bagging a hat-trick comprised of a close-range finish, a penalty and a commanding header. Jack Wilshere also converted from a spot-kick after Mathieu Debuchy was felled in the 18-yard box.

Arsene Wenger named a mixture of regulars and second-string options in his starting XI, fielding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (right wing), Alex Iwobi (left wing) and Wilshere (number ten) as the three behind Akpom in a 4-2-3-1 set-up. Francis Coquelin and Mathieu Flamini occupied the double pivot, while Debuchy, Per Mertesaker, Gabriel Paulista and Nacho Monreal manned the defence. Emiliano Martinez earned a rare start between the sticks.

When asked to evaluate Akpom’s role in the upcoming season, Wenger was understandably cautious:

“That’s up to him. How much? I don’t know but I just believe that it’s an encouragement to do well and to work even harder. He’s a young player and it can lift his confidence. The confidence in the dressing room that you sense from the other players is important as well and that can help him. Let’s not forget it’s a friendly. He’s a good talent but he has to work and show that in [the big] games.”

Stoke 0 Everton 0 (Everton win 5-4 on pens)

The Toffees converted all five of their spot-kicks following a goalless 90 minutes against Mark Hughes’ men to book a match-up against Arsenal in the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy. Romelu Lukaku spearheaded Everton’s attack, with Steven Pienaar, Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas supporting the Belgian in a 4-2-3-1. Gareth Barry and James McCarthy patrolled the centre of the park, while Brendan Galloway partnered Phil Jagielka in central defence. Roberto Martinez rang the changes at the break, bringing in Leon Osman, Tom Cleverley, John Stones, Gerard Deulofeu and Steven Naismith.

In the Potters’ camp, Mark Hughes chose to name nine of his 10 players who’d returned from international duty on the bench, with Marko Arnautovic the only recruit deemed fit enough to start – the Austrian midfielder proved a menace in the first half operating behind lone striker Joselu. Hughes handed minutes to the likes of Peter Crouch, Marc Wilson and Marco van Ginkel after the break, yet allowed new debutant goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard to play the full 90 minutes.

The Stoke manager was hugely impressed with the Dane’s performance, lauding his dominating presence and keen understanding of the game:

“It was a good opportunity for Jakob to play with the guys and it was a great stage for him to make his first appearance for the Club. The game was played in a fantastic stadium and it will be good for his experience as a young player. He made two or three really good saves for us, showed great presence, good ability and a good reading of the game for such a young ‘keeper. We’re really pleased with what he’s produced tonight

Borussia Monchengladbach 1 Swansea City 1

Swans boss Garry Monk opted for a 4-1-4-1 formation in their opening pre-season fixture, with Jay Fulton assuming the holding role, Ki Sung-yeung and Gylfi Sigurdsson in central midfield, Andre Ayew on the left flank and Nathan Dyer on the right. Up top, Bafetimbi Gomis fronted the attack, while in defence, new left-back Franck Tabanou was afforded a starting berth.

Monk benched the entire starting XI after the hour mark, handing debuts to shot-stopper Kristoffer Nordfeldt and forward Eder. Jack Cork, Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Grimes took to the midfield, with the latter delivering a birthday goal from the edge of the area to secure a draw for Welsh outfit. Eder came close in the dying stages, but the Bundesliga opposition held steadfast.

After the match, Monk admitted it’s all about building up match fitness right now:

“The new players have integrated well within the group, so there were plenty of good things to come from this game. We planned it so that we would play a team for 60 minutes and another 11 for 30. Then we will flip that for the next game against 1860 Munich on Saturday. It allows everyone to get plenty of minutes under their belts. It helps their physical element, which is very important.’’

SC Verl 1 Watford 4

A brace against the fourth-tier German opposition made it five goals in three fixtures for the 5.0-priced Odion Ighalo. The Nigerian striker bagged 20 league goals last term and comes in at 0.5 cheaper than fellow forward Troy Deeney, though it’s worth noting he’s playing out wide for the promoted side. Ikechi Anya netted a volley to extend the Hornets’ lead to 3-0 by the half-time whistle, before substitute wide man Lloyd Dyer scored the fourth with an eye-catching lob following a run from his own half.

Quique Sanchez Flores fielded his troops in a 4-2-3-1 formation from the start, with Sebastian Prodl and Craig Cathcart pairing up in central defence. Almen Abdi operated in “the hole” behind frontman Troy Deeney, while Ighalo and Anya provided the width. Etienne Capoue and Ben Watson filled the defensive midfield berths. Flores made a host of changes over the second period, with new boy Jose Holebas one of three players introduced for the start of the second period. Both Connor Smith and Fernando Forestieri sat out this fixture after suffering minor knocks in training.

Orlando City 3 West Bromwich Albion 1

Callum McManaman’s first goal in an Albion strip proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Orlando – inspired by former Ballon D’Or winner Kaka – fought back to record a comfortable victory. Baggies boss, Tony Pulis, started Brown Ideye up front, with James McClean and McManaman offering the width on either flank. James Morrison operated behind Ideye, with Claudio Yacob and Darren Fletcher sitting further back. Chris Brunt was tasked with playing at left-back, fuelling fears that we’ll be starved of a West Brom defensive option next term. Pulis was unwilling to risk Saido Berahino on the artificial turf after the English marksman picked up a knee injury on international duty with the U21s.

Finally, a reminder that we’re collating all the pre-season action via a dedicated section here as the action unfolds.

The word on the street is that he could be rotated if they go four at the back. One to keep an eye on in pre season definitely.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Ivanovic and the premium defence options

Voting is now closed in our poll on who you think will be the best premium priced defender in Fantasy Football next season.

With 58% of the vote Branislav Ivanovic was the outright winner.

With John Terry in third with 10% of the vote and Cesar Azpilicueta with 9% that means that at least three quarters of those Fantasy Football Scout regulars that voted will be going into Gameweek 1 with a Chelsea defender.

For those that think Ivanovic deserves his top billing why do you think he will do so well? Should we be considering other Chelsea defenders? And does anyone dare go into Gameweek 1 without a Chelsea defender.

What about some of the others like Koscielny (10% of the vote) or Baines with just 3% of the vote? Should more people be considering them?

*Our new poll on who you think will be the best Fantasy Football mid price midfielder in 2015/16 is now live (see middle column of the home page).

I have Ivanovic, because I vowed I would start with him this year. However, dropping to Azpi is so tempting, it allows me to get Koscielny and, if I want, Walcott. I certainly wouldn't go without a Chelsea defender.

Same with me. Every year I'll say I'll start him.. every year I downgrade him to another Chelsea defender or an Arsenal defender and every year he starts with goals.

This year I'm determined to start with him...could be the kiss of death to his prospects but at least I'll be part of a big disappointed crowd.

The problem for me is that, while Ivanovic is likely to score more highly than any defender, I'm not confident that he, Darmian and Ozil will outscore Azpi, Koscielny and Walcott.

I have Walcott and ivanovic which solves that issue. But I agree I think when Walcott is fit he is a real threat and can get some huge hauls in a year he has to prove himself to get back into the England side.

My Aguero/Rooney/Sakho frontline takes up a fair bit of the budget. If Aguero is ruled out then things change dramatically.

I like both and may downgrade to them when cash is needed. That's the beauty of Ivan...he gives flexibility.

Shame Monreal looks to be off - he would be a magnet for bonus under the changes. Will be keeping a close eye on Koscielny's CBI.

Jagielka is the other I'd consider. Shame Everton's early fixtures are so dire.

Completely agree Ivans price does give a decent amount of flexibility that can be much needed when things get settled after the first few GWs.

Its a shame Zaboleta had such a poor season last year - he certainly has the similar play styles that to match ivanos stats if hes on form and can nail down that spot - certainly one to watch for me....

        Agree, so tempting to switch.

But remember how Iva played before CFC went more conservative after Christmas? He was basically paying RW (crazy agv. position) against the weaker teams. Unlucky to only get 4 g and 6 assist imo.

Luis might stay too which will impact Azpi to some degree.

I know I am biased, but I think Koscielny will get the biggest haul this year. Arsenal only got 13(?) clean sheets last season, I see that improving a lot this one. He's can score goals and is in form now he has his achilles problem sorted out.

I voted for Ivanovic, but I might not get a Chelsea defender. Azpi looks good, but if he were to miss games it will probably be against weaker opposition. I still may get him though

I think this year may be different. Terry may be rested more so Ivan may play alongside Cahill with Azpi at RB and Felipe Luis at LB. Not sure Azpi is the primary rest candidate anymore.

Until we know otherwise I think the smart money is that Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill and Azpilicueta will play the majority of games and Zouma will come in to replace Cahill when needed. Terry has yet to give any indication that he is in need of a rest.

I think I'll avoid Terry looking at the members tables though. CBI is quite poor compared to many others, many others that are cheaper. Ivan is a better tackler. Terry excels at passing, but the bonus has clamped down on that action. Koscielny's CBI isn't great either. I think Kosc and Terry could be the major losers in bonus.

that's only the last 12 matches. Over the season he's pretty low on CBI in comparison to Jagielka, Williams etc. Even on that table his tackling stats are no where to be seen. Passing though is superb...which helps account for much of his bonus...see Sunderland game and 3rd Turd's recent community article.

One to watch but with ok but not great CBI for his price, poor tackling stats currently there could be better options. 6m is a lot when Aguero is 13, Ivan is 7, Silva is 10m and so on.

Everybody is low on CBI compared with Jagielka - the Everton midfield were useless. Williams is a different kettle of fish, I agree.

BUT - look at the difference between Koscielny and the other ARSENAL defenders ... 🙂

According to The3rdTurd's article on FPL bonus points winners and losers, Terry would have broken even. The biggest losers amongst the defenders included Bertrand (-5), Koscielny and Skrtel (both -3) and Clyne and Wisdom (both -2).

                    Don't forget Terry's goals.

I'm starting with Azpi and Mert. Until I get an indication they are being blown away by Ivan and Kos, that's how it's staying. They have early price rises all over them the moment the others don't score.

I think that depend from strategy which you want to play.
If you want WC in let's say GW4 then in my opinion you don't need necessary Ivanovic because of his not well fixtures. You can bring him after GW4. If you want use you WC later, than you should consider him as your choice at the beginning. The same think with Hazard.

opposite of my thoughts, I want to wc early, but I am starting with Ivan, and wc-Ing him out. He starts so well every season!

I don't think premium defenders are season keepers as cs are very fixture dependent.

Ivanovic is a season-keeper. He is proven, nailed-on, gets you crucial offensive&defensive points, and most importantly he doesn't get injured. The only criticisms is that he occasionally picks up a card but that can happen to anybody. Anyways, what more can you say about this guy?

Initially I drafted in Ivanovic, but later I looked at the fixtures and decided to go with Azpi. Ivanovic tends to score against lower oppositions, his average position too is further up the field. But against tougher oppositions Mourinho likes to go with defense first approach. Last year I had Ivanovic all season. But in the later part of the season Azpi proved to be of more value because of the bonus points when Chelsea mainly went in with the defense first approach.
Starting fixtures are not so easy. They all seem tricky, so I think Mourinho will again go with defensive tactics. And this suits Azpi more. And I think in these matches Azpi won't be so prone to rotation too.

I always too hung up on rotations pre-season. One of the players will let me down and then the whole team is worthless. Decent players regardless of rotation only for me.

At least it'll keep you fit. I'm just about to start a temporary position next week working on some tenders for government projects so hopefully something permanent comes out of it if they win it.

At the very least it'll get a foot in the door. Everyone in the industry knows someone who is hiring even if its not advertised. So just talk to the experienced lot....

Yeah, I know. It's not what you know, it's who you know. It's how I got this position. They're doing it as a joint venture with the company I did my work experience for so if they win it then they'll likely be looking to hire too, so potentially two doors opening with one project.

If you are happy starting with at least two perma subs in Henn and Targett its alright.

      A lot of compromises though:

      Azpi over Ivan

Targett will play first couple of games when berty is injured, can change him to any 4.0 if they emerge before the season starts and i plan to wc gw 4 anyway so even if i go Targett it's no disaster

His achievements are, but having loads of affairs is hardly the mark of a nice man, and he's extremely arrogant and patronising (in the way Federer is). He said himself that he has had a huge sense of entitlement and thought he could get away with anything.

            Incredible sportsman though.

I don't think you should ever look beyond 4-6 weeks, arguably even 2-3 weeks. So much changes that it's impossible to plan far in advance, too many people fall into the trap of "season-keepers" which is absolute nonsense.

        Tru dat Doo.

        Here's what I currently have:

        Ruddy Rudd
        Darmian Mertesacker Mings Huth Coates
        Silva Mane Walcott Richie Fletcher
        Rooney Costa Lukaku

Got Lukaku purely for that first fixture, where I'll probably swap for Sakho, but this is all still up in the air.

          • 13 Years

I personally wouldn't have Lukaku, I wouldn't want to have a player you want to ditch immediately (that's TOO short-term), and Lukaku scoring is easier games is hardly a sure thing. I'm just starting with Sakho I think.

Well Sanchez will be out for GW1 at least, so you would be fairly certain Walcott will play (otherwise it's a rather one dimensional attack). When Sanchez returns, God knows how Arsenal will line up.

Could I get some opinions please FFS?

Ruddy Rudd - not happy really but don't like spending too much money on GKs, will Butland be nailed on?

Azpi Williams Huth O Shea Saylor - Williams/Huth rotate nicely and if Saylor looks injury free then him and OShea rotate but that's a big IF, prefer Ivan to Azpi but £

Hazard Cazorla Chadli Henderson Anya - I love a penalty taker and nailed-on-ness is good

Aguero Rooney Deeney - nailed on, 2 penalty takers. want to start with Aguero as other transfers will become a priority

    Thanks in advance

Not sure that Santi is the man to go for at that price. He plays quite deep now. And I don't think Saylor should be in anyones team. That Newcastle defence is a shambles. Not worth it untill we see signs of improvement methinks.

Les Reed and Koeman have confirmed that they have CB targets but the suspicion is, having lost out on two transfers, they are attempting to keep things out of the media limelight. Virgil Van Dijk of Celtic has been linked, as have both Feyenoord CBs, van Beek and Kongolo. I think it might be none of them though. But I'm very confident that there will be someone.

    Good morning everyone.

I asked a question yesterday and wasn't able to follow up so apologies for that. I asked whether Benteke would be a bargain if he signed for Utd. Surprisingly most replied that he would be dead as a fantasy option and that he would be back up for Rooney. I have to say that I disagree. The two prime options Utd are chasing in attack are Benteke and Cavani. Anyone of those will cost Utd a fortune and the calibre of these 2 players is not one of a backup striker. Utd are clearly looking for a starter. Lets face it, Rooney's best position is no 10 not no 9. ADM seems like he is as good as sold. This is how I see Utd lining up next season.

Blind ----Rojo -----New CB/Smalling ---- Darmian

    Schweini ------- Schneiderlin

    Depay---------Rooney-------------Mata

    Benteke/Cavani

    - ADM,Fellaini will probably be sold and Carrick to be used sparingly. The only problem is how to fit Herrera.

Talk of a Schmidfield. LVG specifically said they are competing with Carrick and Blind. This means a more attacking midfielder in front. Could be Herrera, Rooney or Mata

He will keep faith with the team from last season with Blind challenging Shaw perhaps. Schneiderlin should slot straight in as he's better than Fellaini and has PL experience unlike Schweini. However all the spots are up for grabs so this lot will have a fight on their hands.

Well LVG has previously mentioned he would like to play 4-3-3 but didn't have the personnel to do it. Not they signed 2 class mids and have a lot of CMs. All seems to point towards 4-3-3 imo.

Man Utd need a striker, so of course the press are going to link them to every single available striker on the market.

I think he'll play 4-3-3- with a No10/AMC at the top of the midfield diamond.

He said in his presser yesterday that Schneiderlein/Schwein/Carrick and Blind are competing for two places which I guess means he sees Mata/Herrera and probably even Fellaini as No 10's.

GKs are good. Defence is a bit of a shambles tbh. Janmaat - a Newcastle defender for 5m?? You already have Cech so u should think about changing azpi to mert or darmian. Alder is a good punt. I think spurs will get more clean sheets this season. Mariaapa has awful fixtures. You should upgrade to a 4.5 def like Francis/O'Shea. Midfield is brilliant. Not a fan of Giroud up front but Benteke and deeney are solid picks. You could downgrade has to fab to afford Rooney/costa or change Giroud and Benteke to Rooney and Costa?? Decent team imo. The midfield is excellent but the defence is a bit rubbish. Good luck!

Really interested in a Utd defender to start with this season, I can see a lot more protection and fewer goals than last year.

Darmian is my early pick, as he has less competition on that right side, though if Shaw remains injury free...

Smalling is always worth a goal or three too don't forget, although that could be more challenging if Otamendi or Ramos end up making the move.

Darmian and Shaw seem like decent value from the start, I'd expect both players to be nailed on.
