Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

Possibly swapping Costa for Kun/Iva for Azpi. No cash for Silva tho, like Haz/Milner too much to use to free up 1.5.

I tell ya, he looked like he was shot out of a canon at times last season when he came back finally. Seemed very energetic and quite the goal threat. Not sure I would go with him from the start, but he is one I will be monitoring.

Henderson said something similar last year. Just because they want to doesnt mean they will. Other players are literally employed to stop them from doing so 😀

It does sound though as if he is the preferred striker of choice at United for the coming season

There's that little voice in the back of the head though that keeps saying those who go without Ivan will pay for it......again. But, yeah, not sure I can drop that kind of money at the back.

          I don't do real RMTs.

But I don't like King and Waynama in the same midfield. see my other posts tonight for why I have doubts Ivan is going to worth more than Azpi. So downgrade Ivan to upgrade King.

And keep an eye on whether Morgan will be back for wk1.

Not sure about anyone else but early on I don't desperately fancy anyone defensively this time around. Chelsea maybe, but even they might let in a few if they start this season anything like the last. Arsenal might be a good shout. But most other potential candidates based on fixtures (Sund / Lei / Wham / Man U) have had a certain amount of upheaval. I'm really struggling to put together a defence I'm happy with this year.

Think it's a roll the dice kind of scenario. Just field some starters, perhaps one who is a little more expensive than the others, and see what happens. I had some good success with a double-up on Sunderland defenders at the end of last season.

Sunderland have great fixtures early on, but have brought in a couple of new DEFs, so might be a tad less sturdy at the start. If only PvA had come in at 4.5.........................................

Starting with something different this year. Partly because I'm curious and the number crunching can only take you so far so decided to try it out, mostly because of the WC rule change 😉

I will be the first to admit that it looks awkward with only one big striker but bear with me.

    stekelenberg, 4.0
    azpi, pva, kosc, ivan, 4.0
    hazard, walcott, mane, chadli, hendo
    rooney, wilson, 4.5

Usually I go with the tradition 3-4-3 and get two big strikers and one big defender.

Stekelenberg is supposed to be a play and forget gk, when forster comes back he can be switched or if a better defence shows up.

PVA and wilson rotate over the first 8 perfectly giving me AVL, NOR, SWA, LEI, nor, SUN/bou, sto, WAT. which leads me to the second international break. Depending on how that goes I can switch things around.

Best part about this lineup is flexibility. Ivan >> 5.5 defender gives me 1.5 to up hendo, chadli, or rooney and doesnt weaken my defence much.

I really think this can beat most teams posted on here. What do you guys think??

        Not really.

        Ivan >> 5.5/5 defender
hendo/chadli >> mid price midfielder on form
        rooney >> aguero

only 1 hit if transfer saved first gw.

I genuinely like seeing diverse strategies. And I hope that you do well.
That said, I don't believe in such a heavy defence. Counting on attacking returns from defenders is a recipe for frustration.
Think of it this way: excluding attacking returns, a defender's ceiling is 6 points. The odds of a clean sheet, even in Chelsea's case, is less than 50%. So a Chelsea defender's expected points haul is usually around 4. (This is roughly in-line with Ivanovic's season tally of 160pts).
Cheap defenders with a decent rotation can get a clean sheet potential of 40%... giving an expected value of 3.6 But then there is the matter of the extra 2.5m or so to invest in midfielders and forwards.
I just don't see the allure of expensive defenders.

I guess...it's huge difference if you're posting RMT what you would like to start with idea for whole season or just for few GW...
This is going to be my 10th year in FPL...ups and downs as you would suspect (never been dedicated enough but always been here - sort of)...but what have I learned so far...

Any Team is good...no one can't tell you it's bad...we don't know how they gonna start or perform...who's gonna score, assist...we can go with fixtures or "feeling"...just go for it and don't forget to use "wild card" if it's S**te 🙂

The two wildcards this year is more of a reason to move away from the hivemind and the popular picks. I have always wanted to try something different (team a couple posts above) and this is why I have decided to give it a shot. Not going to lose anything except a wildcard, which I would have to use anyway.....so not losing anything really.

Just realized that a Foster/Myhill combo last season (154 pts), out scored all other team GK combos from a fantasy perspective with the exception of Coutrios/Chech (159 pts).

Pretty amazing considering the bulk of their points were in a half season under Pulis. Thinking Myhill is a no brainer until Forster returns sometime after October.

okay, but Pulis only there for half a season! i do not have the stats but i reckon they improved significantly when he joined. I know because i had the Foster/Myhill combo in my January WC

If not going solely with WBA double up at GK....I do think that at 4.5 with Myhill or 4.0 with Hennessey if that move occurs, going with one as a rotating pair at minimum seems the best value to me as well, CF.

He's a really good pick if no striker is coming to West Ham. I.e. Austin which would be a better pick but more expensive probably.

By far the best ~6-7m pick.

    Hey TM:
As an incentive to help with LMS, you could offer a 2nd chance - if the assistant happens to be eliminated before January, he could be allowed to survive.
    A bit gimmicky, perhaps.

    Is bony being overlooked?

    Last seasons stats -

    1598 minutes played (17.5 games)
    11 goals
    3 assists
    14 bonus points

Bear in mind he moved in January and was eased in slowly. He'll be banging on the managers door for more gametime this season. He'll more than likely start the first game and at £8.5m could be a bargain for city attack coverage.

At 9m you can get a more "exciting" Sterling or a more dangerous Walcott as "punt"

Morning gents. Messing about with my team and trying to find the best value def for 5m / 5.5m. Mert seems the safe choice if a bit dull, considering Bellering or Kolarov to spice things up. Who are you all going for in that bracket?

      ROSE?

I'd rather Toby than Rose and put that .5 to use elsewhere for a route into Spurs defense if one wanted to go that way.

I'd rather have Darmian or Skrtel/Clyne ahead of Mert in the 5.5 bracket. That said, I'm going with Kolarov but I have a heavy defense in general to absorb his probable rotating with Clichy. Kolarov by far greatest points per game potential of all non-Ivan defenders in my view, but you have to be able to take those zeroes when you are slotting him in as one of your starting three which is a little tricky. I think Liverpool defense is being very underrated and overlooked on here though.

They aren't as long as you are willing to rotate the defender, which I know mostly all on here are unwilling to do if they are priced at 5.0 or 5.5 but I don't have a problem doing personally.

Was thinking the same. If I have a few solid 4.5m it may be worth getting Kolarov in alright. Darmian is an interesting prospect but very unsure of what Utd will do. Agree LIverpool are underlooked but those away fixtures are as bad as they come.

Again, as long as you rotate the Liverpool defender they are just amazing as their home fixtures are extraordinary. I am also slightly worried about Darmian but I think he is just pure class and a far better player than Valencia at that position that he will just be nailed from the start. Anyway, I rate Gabriel from what I've seen from him last year and I just think Mert is a horrendous piece of crap and the writing is on the wall for him this season.

Mert is pushing on alright. Too slow these days I think.
As for pool could go down the rotation way with them too ( bit expensive though) but I think if I'm onl playing them every 2nd game, koralov is surely the man

The problem with that is you never really know when Kolarov will just not play. Rotating him is basically impossible to do as he is not nailed..unless that somehow changes and Pelle starts picking him ahead of a fit Clichy week in week out in the league which would be just amazing 🙂

It's a similar situation with Walcott. But if I have 2/3 decent cheapies with decent overall fixtures - like sunderland or Bournmouth who can pretty much cover him any week initially for the first few weeks. Could be golden

lol true but it really did look as if Koralov had put some semblance of being nailed on at the end of the season last year (I know Clichy was injured for a while and all) He was just so good.

With DEFs, go cheap and rotate, or buy the very best. There is no middle ground.

Worried about costa but i think having united cover aka rooney is more important

Deeney seems the standout 5.5 to me at the moment considering you have Ritchie rendering Wilson useless. Any 4.5 defender who plays is better than a 4.0 who doesn't I think.

Not a big fan of having any attacker from a promoted side in my GW1 team, really. And Kane I was sour enough with on how he ended last term and his price tag is prohibitive there are a few strikers who are cheaper who I like more and would rather own.

    Go with 4.5 GKPs. Ivan > Azpi. Cedric/PVA > 4.5.
this gives you 2m.Ritchie > Chadli. Igs > Wilson may help also.
