James Milner nets again as Liverpool chalk up a third straight win. Watford’s Matej Vydra and West Brom forward Brown Ideye also score for the second successive match, whilst Cameron Jerome misses out through injury as Norwich fall to defeat.

Adelaide United 0 Liverpool 2

Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 set-up for the Reds’ impressive win over the Australian outfit, with central striker Divock Origi flanked by Jordon Ibe and Adam Lallana. Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were stationed in midfield, while the back five comprised of Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez.

Ibe, a 5.0 midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was the stand-out performer on show, delivering the cross for James Milner’s opener, before Danny Ings recorded his debut goal for the club.

Milner has now netted in two consecutive matches while deployed in a central midfield berth, strengthening his claim to be selected ahead of the identically priced Henderson (7.0). Joe Gomez also put on another impressive display as the 18-year-old continued to stake a claim for a starting role following his move from Charlton; Gomez is yet to be added to the FPL roster but is likely to be priced at 4.5 on his inclusion.

As for Ibe, Rodgers favours the London-born starlet in a wide role but didn’t rule out the possibility of fielding him as a number 10:

“I’ve played him in the No.10 [role] – I’ve had a little look at him in there and I think he could maybe play that role as well, but I think he is a natural winger that likes to be on the outside. He’s happy to be in the duel and likes to set up the one v one. His best positions will be on the sides, for sure.”

SC Paderborn 07 0 Watford 2

The Hornets capped off their tour of Germany with a well-fought victory, besting second-tier outfit Paderborn in a tempestuous affair. Matej Vydra scored for the second successive match after latching onto a through ball from Troy Deeney, while Odion Ighalo continued his run of scoring in every warm-up tie by netting his sixth goal in four encounters. Ighalo (5.0) – who’s priced below Deeney (5.5) – is certainly enhancing his viability as a budget third striker. Intriguingly, Ighalo has been linked with a move to Villa as Tim Sherwood looks for a new centre-forward in light of Christian Benteke’s imminent departure.

Quique Sanchez Flores slightly tweaked his tactics this time around, according to the local press. Having started with a 4-2-3-1 in previous matches, he moved to a 4-1-3-2 set-up. Giederius Arlauskis and Allan Nyom were handed debuts in defence alongside Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Jose Holebas. Etienne Capoue sat in front of the back-four, whilst Vydra joined Troy Deeney up front, with Almen Abdi, Valon Behrami and Ben Watson stationed behind. Flores made six changes over the course of the second half and allowed Ighalo – who had been featured in attacking midfield in every previous match over the close-season – to replace Vydra alongside Deeney in the front two this time.

Richmond Kickers 1 West Bromwich Albion 2

The Baggies left it late to triumph over their Virginia-based opponents, with Brown Ideye heading home one minute from time following a Stephane Sessegnon cross to claim his second goal in as many matches. James McClean bagged the West Midlanders’ first of the afternoon, unleashing a 25-yard dipping strike after cutting in from the right wing.

Chris Brunt started at left-back, enabling McClean to operate further forward in a 4-4-2 set-up. Liam O’Neill, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson joined the former in defence, while Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob and Callum McManaman lined up with the latter in midfield. Saido Berahino and Victor Anichebe were partnered up top for the first period.

Jonas Olsson is now an injury doubt after he limped off five minutes before the final whistle. Joleon Lescot and Craig Dawson, meanwhile, were rested as a precaution and are expected to face Swindon Town on July 25.

Maccabi Haifa 1 Norwich City 0

The Canaries fell to their first defeat of the summer, having easily dispatched of three lower-league English sides in the past ten days. Nathan Redmond made his first appearance since returning from international duty with the England U21s. Sebastien Bassong paired up with Ryan Bennett in central defence, with Elliot Bennett at right-back and, significantly, Bradley Johnson at left-back. Gary O’Neil, Graham Dorrans and Jonny Howson joined Redmond in midfield, with Tony Andreu supporting Gary Hooper in attack.

Johnson’s shift to the defence will be a mild concern given that, at 5.5 in the FPL, he is considered a strong budget midfield option, having struck 15 goals in the Canaries’ promotion season. On the flipside, Andreu has caught the eye in pre-season and is being given opportunities in an attacking role. Once compared to Cesc Fabregas in style, Andreu is available as a 4.5 midfielder. Elsewhere for the Canaries, Cameron Jerome missed out after sustaining a foot injury against Cambridge on Friday evening. The striker, who has scored five goals so far this summer, now has a protective cast on his foot as a precautionary measure.

A reminder that all these results, along with Scout Notes on formations and form players is being captured on our dedicated page right here.

Nick, I really don't know why you don't go for a 4-3-3 structure, you are almost there already.

Stoke 4.5 defender instead of Holebas (better rotation with Sunderland).
      4.5 midfielder instead of Chadli.
3.0 to upgrade your 6 attacking positions however you want - Hazard for Fabregas, Sanchez (when ready) for Walcott, Kane for Gomis, Rooney and Sigurdsson for Gomis and Mane, whatever you like.

The point of 4-3-3 (partly) is it gives you fantastic flexibility and fluidity with your 6 attackers with plenty of cash available, based on a very solid and stable defence. It's not just 1 week, it's the flexibility week by week.

      Just a thought anyhow.

Hmm maybe. The problem I think with playing four defenders is that they could be defensively solid and then concede a freak goal, plus fitting four defenders instead of three into rotation is hard so surely every few weeks one of you defenders will be nailed on for a 1-2 pointer?

Which 4.5 stoke defender is nailed is a problem. Other then that it looks okay. Is Andreu the best 4.5 mid do you think?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

You don't need clean sheets every week. Over the season the better defenders will deliver reliable good value and as you won't be captaining them that's all you need. Azpi, Kosc and Lescott can play every week. The other 2 can be a 2 x 4.5 rotation, Sunderland/Stoke is only one option there. So what you have already is fine with maybe a small tweak.

With the Stoke defender we should know before GW1 but either Wollscheid or Muniesa should be playing. Given Shawcross's back problems then possibly both.

I don't really know about Andreu and didn't research him yet. But Mulumbu is a good player and should be nailed at 4.5.

Yep. I'm not hung up on it but I mentioned it because your squad is so nearly there, just needs a tweak or two with structure.

Actually I don't know why 4-3-3 disturbs people as an idea (although I realise it's not the done thing). It is one player different to 3-4-3, that's all. Just means you have a 6.0 defender and a 4.5 bench mid rather than a 6.0 midfielder and a 4.5 bench defender essentially.

Yeah I see your point. It just seems as though defensive points are so much less reliable and predictable, as a freak goal could happen (e.g. Charlie Adam against Chelsea) whereas midfielders will usually produce in the easier fixtures

Not what the stats say, Nick.

If you look at last season's value returns (points per £1m) you will see a host of "premium" defenders in the top 30, 7 or 8 of them as I recall. Only 1-2 premium mids. And no premium strikers. Premium players are relevant because they are easier to predict.

OK, so let's say we exclude captain options for now. With the rest of the squad you want bang for your buck (= value) and best use of "free" budget. By putting in place solid value in a 4-man defence you can actually concentrate free budget into 6 attacking positions, not 7.

It doesn't really matter about Adam's goal, that was only 1 week and we are talking about 38 (or let's say 28 because once the DGWs start the game changes a bit). You can predict premium defenders right now that will deliver solid value over the season barring injury. They can be brought in and left alone. So not only do you concentrate "free budget" into 6 attacking positions, you concentrate FTs there as well.

Lastly, the effect is that you can afford great captain options without difficulty. I will have a long-term team with Aguero and Costa/Rooney with no problem at all and no loss of quality elsewhere that I can see. Plus a 3rd striker around the 7.0 mark who I will use FTs to rotate for form and fixtures.

That's the theory anyhow. It would have worked last season. I'll soon start to see whether it works this season. 🙂

Yeah I get your point but I meant in any given fixture, for example in GW38 last season, you would've expected Arsenal to keep a CS at home to WBA. But they didn't. That's my point really. But I do see where you are coming from.

And like I said before you are likely to have at least one defender who has a poor fixture every couple of weeks due to the difficulty of rotating four defenders for fixtures instead of three. Doesn't mean over a season they'll score poorly, just means in some weeks you may as well play your 4.5 midfielder.

You could easily find better value in an extra attacker, though. For example early last season Chadli for 6.0 would have easily outscored the similarly priced Koscielny.

      - Speroni and Ward double up? Wouldn't even have 1 palace defender if you made me

Oh okay. It is kind of tough since there are no standout mid price options. Benteke or Lukaku if they tickle your fancy. If not what about Gomis?

Could then use that to maybe do Fab -> Haz and even Sterling -> Silva

You don't need Hazard. If he gets Hazard he'll have to do something like Rooney to Benteke, or Walcott to Henderson. I'd back Fabregas and Rooney/Walcott to outscore the alternative.

Teams with Sakho - are you on planning on benching for the ARS / LIV / MANC games?

Decided i can't ignore those fixtures so now have:

    Myhill (Hennesey)
    Ivan // Kosc // Huth (Cedric / O'Shea)
Fab // Wally // Mane // Ritchie (Feltcher)
    Rooney // Sakho // Costa

£0 ITB - so pooping myself a little not having enough for Kun in GW4 however as ive been mentioning, i'm happy to WC by then.

Question is guys - is that a solid enough team for the 1st 3 weeks? Looks pretty template (if i dare say). And what about Sakho? i dnt like benching my forwards...but he rotates pretty well with Ritchie so not all bad...

Captaincy wise - i expect Rooney and Costa will be my main 2 (although i know ill constantly be tempted by Wally..)

If I'm playing 3-4-3 then I'll never bench a striker.

If you're going to play 3-5-2 then you probably want someone cheaper than Sakho

im not planning on playing a 3-5-2 - nono.. But that's my dilema with Sakho... Hoping to hear from other Sakho drafters re their plans for the tough games..

yes..Kun i will have 100% but with current status wont bring him in until wk4. Haz - same story - i'll always end up with Haz at some point and keep til end of season but Fab's price is an enabler for other players and seems to be a better starter than Haz... Cheers buddy.

Can I have a little help please?

      A: Agüero & Mata
      B: Rooney & Silva + 1,0 in the bank.

I think that 1,0 and Agüero's 'lack of match fitness' makes the difference and B is better.

Southampton with Targett LB = Lukaku on the right dominating in the air like against Arsenal.

Is anyone considering DEFOE as 3rd striker?

SUNDERLAND have reasonable fixtures especially over the first 6 weeks. Last season his returns weren't great but SUNDERLAND were terrible and I'd expect a slightly better return this season.

The money I lost on him last season, no way. I was considering Lens quite strongly - mainly because of those fixtures - but he might struggle with nobody to regularly finish off the chances he creates.

If I end up with a 6.0 or less 3rd striker I am definitely considering him. Sunderland have great early fixtures and Defoe is a proven PL goalscorer. Maybe Sunderland will struggle for goals again this season but similarly I don't think Watford (Deeney) or Bournemouth (Wilson) will be firing 3 goals a game

This is part of my thinking as well. With WALCOTT potentially allowing a solid 5 week-in-week-out midfield, DEFOE feels like a better fall back plan.

I think BOURNEMOUTH will try to stick to their playing style but chances may be few and far between and WATFORD, well having not seen a lot of them and I'm not willing to put my faith on a convenient price tag…just yet.

          Mignolet (Hamer)
          Koscielny - Jagielka - Darmian (O'Shea, Baker)
          Fabregas - Yaya - Chadli - Milner - Schweinsteiger

not sure about Schweinsteiger - too deep and quite injury-prone. Would downgrade him to a 4.5 MID and maybe upgrade one of Chadli or Milner. Everton i would not touch with that poor schedule. Darmian might fall behind Valencia according to LVG, would not risk him at the start. And then Baker should be upgraded as well by 0.5 Mio

            1. ales100i

Yes my main concern is that i have 3 starters from ManU. Who knows how they will start the season with all these new signings. But i'm almost sure that Scweini will be the man that brings experience and composure to their midfield. That why he was brought in and at least first few GW, he will in my opinion start. I might drop Darmian for a 5.0 defender, so i can upgrade Baker. That would also lower the number of United players in the team. Good point on Everton schedule, didn't look at it so closely. Might have to find someone else for the first few GW there. As for Milner and Chadli, i think they will both do very well this season. Especialy have high hopes for Milner, as he will be moved to a more central position. Mhm....but gave me something to think about though. Thanks.

Can I get some inputs on this beauty?

          Myhill Hennessey
          Azpi Cedric Francis-Holebas | Targett
Hazard Walcott Sterling Mane | Bentaleb
          Rooney Benteke Sakho

Very nice indeed; may well copy. Would be tempted to downgrade sakho to deeney and use the funds to get another big defender though

            Mane > Hendo
            Sterling > Silva

            Or Sterling > YYT
            Targett > 4.5

Had those two option in mind but I like Mane

Considered Yaya too but will monitor

            1 , 1
            1 , 1, 1, 1 | 0 (won't start after a few)
            1 , 1 , 1, 1 | 1 (decent bench fodder)
            1 , 1 , 0 (don't like)

Taking away 1 for the keepers..you'll need a transfer when Fosters back

            13 - 1 = 12/15

You're deducting a point for needing a transfer when Foster returns? Which is potentially 2 Wildcards away? Harsh!

                Don't be mean, I'll take 12/15 anyday 😛

This is about the most similar I've seen to my current team, so I like it. Have Azpi, but not set on the other defenders.

Got Ruddy & Bassong, how do we think Norwich's defense will be this season? Home defense to be precise 😀

In 13/14 they only conceded 18 at home, not sure how much has changed since then though...

          A) Mane and Williams
          B) Sterling and Targett?

Afternoon all. Some pretty useful stuff coming out of UTD today. I guess Darmian will be flooding out of teams and Rooney waving at him on the way in.
