James Milner nets again as Liverpool chalk up a third straight win. Watford’s Matej Vydra and West Brom forward Brown Ideye also score for the second successive match, whilst Cameron Jerome misses out through injury as Norwich fall to defeat.

Adelaide United 0 Liverpool 2

Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 set-up for the Reds’ impressive win over the Australian outfit, with central striker Divock Origi flanked by Jordon Ibe and Adam Lallana. Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were stationed in midfield, while the back five comprised of Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez.

Ibe, a 5.0 midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was the stand-out performer on show, delivering the cross for James Milner’s opener, before Danny Ings recorded his debut goal for the club.

Milner has now netted in two consecutive matches while deployed in a central midfield berth, strengthening his claim to be selected ahead of the identically priced Henderson (7.0). Joe Gomez also put on another impressive display as the 18-year-old continued to stake a claim for a starting role following his move from Charlton; Gomez is yet to be added to the FPL roster but is likely to be priced at 4.5 on his inclusion.

As for Ibe, Rodgers favours the London-born starlet in a wide role but didn’t rule out the possibility of fielding him as a number 10:

“I’ve played him in the No.10 [role] – I’ve had a little look at him in there and I think he could maybe play that role as well, but I think he is a natural winger that likes to be on the outside. He’s happy to be in the duel and likes to set up the one v one. His best positions will be on the sides, for sure.”

SC Paderborn 07 0 Watford 2

The Hornets capped off their tour of Germany with a well-fought victory, besting second-tier outfit Paderborn in a tempestuous affair. Matej Vydra scored for the second successive match after latching onto a through ball from Troy Deeney, while Odion Ighalo continued his run of scoring in every warm-up tie by netting his sixth goal in four encounters. Ighalo (5.0) – who’s priced below Deeney (5.5) – is certainly enhancing his viability as a budget third striker. Intriguingly, Ighalo has been linked with a move to Villa as Tim Sherwood looks for a new centre-forward in light of Christian Benteke’s imminent departure.

Quique Sanchez Flores slightly tweaked his tactics this time around, according to the local press. Having started with a 4-2-3-1 in previous matches, he moved to a 4-1-3-2 set-up. Giederius Arlauskis and Allan Nyom were handed debuts in defence alongside Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Jose Holebas. Etienne Capoue sat in front of the back-four, whilst Vydra joined Troy Deeney up front, with Almen Abdi, Valon Behrami and Ben Watson stationed behind. Flores made six changes over the course of the second half and allowed Ighalo – who had been featured in attacking midfield in every previous match over the close-season – to replace Vydra alongside Deeney in the front two this time.

Richmond Kickers 1 West Bromwich Albion 2

The Baggies left it late to triumph over their Virginia-based opponents, with Brown Ideye heading home one minute from time following a Stephane Sessegnon cross to claim his second goal in as many matches. James McClean bagged the West Midlanders’ first of the afternoon, unleashing a 25-yard dipping strike after cutting in from the right wing.

Chris Brunt started at left-back, enabling McClean to operate further forward in a 4-4-2 set-up. Liam O’Neill, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson joined the former in defence, while Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob and Callum McManaman lined up with the latter in midfield. Saido Berahino and Victor Anichebe were partnered up top for the first period.

Jonas Olsson is now an injury doubt after he limped off five minutes before the final whistle. Joleon Lescot and Craig Dawson, meanwhile, were rested as a precaution and are expected to face Swindon Town on July 25.

Maccabi Haifa 1 Norwich City 0

The Canaries fell to their first defeat of the summer, having easily dispatched of three lower-league English sides in the past ten days. Nathan Redmond made his first appearance since returning from international duty with the England U21s. Sebastien Bassong paired up with Ryan Bennett in central defence, with Elliot Bennett at right-back and, significantly, Bradley Johnson at left-back. Gary O’Neil, Graham Dorrans and Jonny Howson joined Redmond in midfield, with Tony Andreu supporting Gary Hooper in attack.

Johnson’s shift to the defence will be a mild concern given that, at 5.5 in the FPL, he is considered a strong budget midfield option, having struck 15 goals in the Canaries’ promotion season. On the flipside, Andreu has caught the eye in pre-season and is being given opportunities in an attacking role. Once compared to Cesc Fabregas in style, Andreu is available as a 4.5 midfielder. Elsewhere for the Canaries, Cameron Jerome missed out after sustaining a foot injury against Cambridge on Friday evening. The striker, who has scored five goals so far this summer, now has a protective cast on his foot as a precautionary measure.

A reminder that all these results, along with Scout Notes on formations and form players is being captured on our dedicated page right here.

Where is this Mertesacker rotation risk coming from lol? Gabriel is quite honestly really crappy and only a backup. Why would Mert get rotated before Kosc? Mert has played almost full minutes for 2 seasons straight.

Ok, how many times have you actually seen Gabriel play? I'm willing to bet the answer is not a lot. And you clearly haven't seen Wengers comments, so don't give a condescending opinion on something you know little about.

        1. blank

Just lost your bet. Being an Arsenal supporter myself have seen the few games he has appeared on. Just really shaky and uncertain. Mert & Kosc are one of the best CB pairs in the EPL, there's no worry of either being rotated as often that it would matter. Paulista will play in League and FA cup rounds but will not get much time in PL games. URL to Wenger's comments? I know before reading it it's something like this "Gabriel is very talented and will be a great centre back"

This rotation fear is just ridiculous in my opinion. Same than fearing that Zouma will steal minutes from Terry. Even if rotation would happen Kos would be rotated before Mert.

Hey everyone. So after messing around the best team that I can make with Rate My Team Tool is

    Guzan, Myhill,
    Ivanovic, Yoshida, Smalling, Kscielny, Clyne

    Hazard, Henderson, Johnson, Ritchie, Mane,

    Kane, Deeney, Giroud/Benteke

It predicts 330 points for my first 6 Gameweeks.

Has anyone been able to get a better team with the RMT tool?

You are trusting the projections way too blindly. B. Johnson played right back last pre-season match, doesn't look good for him. Also your defense is way too expensive. Keep in mind that you are only playing 3 at the time. Why not swap Johson to 4.5? You want 4 midfielders that you are going to play every week. Too much funds in the bench is really a beginner mistake.

Go through the fixtures and see how often you would actually play him? Would you bench your third striker for him or one of those other midfield options often..? If not then money wasted on the bench

    Three questions:

    1) why PVA is not popular(he was last season)? does 5.0 puts everyone off? is he not nailed?
    2) Want to pick up 3rd striker from Watford(really fancy playing 3-5-2). is Deeney the only one considerable? cause both Vydra and Ighalo keep scoring.
    3) If you have to choose a West Ham defender- who would it be? Tomkins? Cresswell? anyone else?

    thank you

    1. blank
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

      1) It's the price for sure. If you want Sunderland defender get O'Shae for 4.5. At 5.0 there are a lot better options like Cedric for example.
      2) Ighalo is the best value imo. He has scored like 6 goals in 4 pre-season matches now. Just hard to get rid of him if he flops as there is not too many 5.0m FWs to consider. Only Jerome, Vydra & Agbonlahor. But if you are playing with 2 FWs you wouldn't want more than the bare minimum invested in the third guy so I think if you insist on Watford guy get Ighalo. I have Jerome because his great fixtures and he is also the number 1 guy.
      3) Ogbonna? Cresswell too expensive for WHU def

You must have been asleep in the last few weeks of last year. Over the season they did concede a high number, but when they switched to 3-5-2 and Huth arrived then the situation changed considerably. City's defenders are not bad alternatives ..... the only unknown is the Tinkerman's influence.

Can I get some advice on my team please? First draft:

GK: Howard (transferred after first week for Fabianski as works in rotation with...), Butland
Def: Clyne, Cedric, 3 way rotation - Mings, Angella, Olsson
Mid: Defay, Walcott, Hazard, Milner, Ritchie
    Fwd: Kane, Benteke, Sakho

Only reason I didn't get Aguero is because it seems like either Aguero or Hazard to me and Hazard is cheaper. The sacrifices of having both seem too great.

I'm sure there are better options in defence than Prodl, Sterling might be dynamite, but I wouldn't start with him, Mane and Wanyama perhaps too much SOT. Benteke & Kane have tough fixtures and prefer Wislon over Deeney.

thanks. I do reshuffling twice a day. boring at work )))
but you right, I have too much SOU and frw fixtures are unfavorable to begin the season.
will be working on my team more.

Issues with Bellerin starting, Wanyama & Mane (Both SOT), would rather one or t'other.

      Nice team though.

Feel like I am getting very close to nailing my team:

    Butland-Speroni
    Ivanovic-Koscielny-Mings-Bassong-Prodl
    Hazard-Ozil-Schneiderlin-Ibe-Matic
    Aguero-Rooney-Wilson

The home rotation for the keepers at a total of 9 I like a lot. Ivanovic and Kosc being my premium defenders with the other three on good rotation. Hazard-Ozil-Schneid I am loving, Matic is a guaranteed starter, Ibe is my gamble. Aguero, Rooney and Wilson is one of my favourite combinations of strikers I have found - I do like the look of Ighalo though.

        Thanks Boris and Raveheart.

I think Hazard is the one must have midfielder.

I toyed with swapping Ivanovic for Azpilicueta and Matic for Ritchie but I would Bournemouth heavy, which I don't mind to start with because of their fixtures but of all the teams I didnt want to go heavy on it was them.

I guess there are players like Puncheon, Ki, Colback, Walters...

Schneiderlin & Matic, I don't many points coming in from these two, but you had to get Aguero. I would consider downgrading Hazard to someone like Walcott( I know everyone wants him), and get at least a third 7-8m MF. Hope this is helpful.

schneiderlin and matic both DMF - perhaps better going for an attacking midfielder in a lower-ranked team, and/or downgrading hazard to free up some cash for balance?

I like puncheon, and around that price range might be worth looking at middling sides with potential to get good home results (newcastle were good value at times last season until the carver era).

colback won't do much in terms of assists etc, but might be worth looking at de jong etc.

my mid is walcott - fab - milner - mata- wanyama. couldn't fit in hazard and retain the overall balance.

I avoid the expensive must-haves each season - last year was yaya and RVP, this year hazard and kun - in favour of an overall strong line-up, but i finished around 23,000, so i could be wrong. For me the rule of thumb would be not to have a squad with more than 2 dodgy defenders and one dodgy MF. third striker this season is tricky.
