Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

I've waited until I was happy that I was not going to make more changes before posting (although with transfers or really negative feedback that could change)

    Any feedback would be welcome.

Decided to rotate keepers as opposed to plugging in Schawzer or Hamer behind Schmneichel
Kept defense to a lot of rotating players (i.e. no big hitters)
I love my midfield and will likely drop one of Payet/Tadic/ Cisse each week
Cisse has always scored big for me and I'm hoping he's back fresh. I had Mane in every draft before this one but there's no reason to believe Tadic won't be back to where he was 12 months ago and is reasonably priced.

There's no Chelsea or Man City - is this madness?

It's very much set up with the wildcard in mind around the international break and hoping to find a gem that goes up in price (payet/ tadic/ benteke)

    Anyway here she be...

    Schmeichel / Guzan
    Cédric / Cresswell / Fuchs / Darmian / Francis
    Cazorla / Özil / Mata / Tadic / Payet
    Rooney / Benteke / Cissé

I would just be concerned about captaincy options - beyond Rooney, how many of the others would you be confident in giving the armband to? I think you really need 2/3 genuine captaincy options out of the likes of Rooney Aguero Costa Hazard etc.

That's a good point.I think it's cazorla week 1 at the mo.Then (just checked - benteke wk 2 and in fairness he might become a good cap option. Then Mata wk 3......
But yeah, the armband will move around a lot with this selection. Cheers.

    Hazard / Ozil / Henerson / Cabaye

    Hennessey / Morgan / Mariappa / Barry

Posted this a week or so ago:

Over the last 3 Seasons how many Goals, Assists and Clean Sheets do you think Ivanovic has got in those 9 games? So 1st 3 games of 14/15 + 1st 3 games of 13/14 + 1st 3 games of 12/13.

5 Goals, 1 Assist & 5 Clean Sheets. Even without adding bonus points in that would be a total of 71 points over 9 games (when including 2 points per game for the 60+ mins).

That averages at 7.89 points per game. Was the first name on my team sheet myself!

Anyone else thinking of going with both Cesc & Eden? I certainly am looking to do that.

It probably means no Arsenal midfielder, but I do feel that between Cesc & Eden you will cover a big % of the Chelsea attacking points in any given game, whereas with the Arsenal midfield it's a bit of minefield right now.

There are the concerns that Chelsea don't score enough goals to justly two premium front-7 players in your squad, but the fixture list is pretty decent to start with and I wouldn't be surprised if they played more open in the first few months of the new campaign.

    RMT

    Myhill - Guzan
    Azp - Kos - Francis - (Bassong) - (£4)
    Fab - Ozil - Chadli - Siggy - (£4.5)
    Aguero - Costa - Wilson

Goalies rotate well, but may change to Butland/Speroni if Foster is back sooner.
Azp + Kos to start every game
Francis and Bassong to rotate. A 4£ starter will eventually appear
I reckon Fab is worth the £2.5 less than Hazard to start with.
Want to do Siggy --> Mane but cant find that £0.5 extra.
Went with Wilson over Deeney for fixtures.

So what are the contentious decisions that you're making? i.e. those that you think come down to whether you fancy a player or not?

    For me:

Rooney - I fancy big things
    Kane - think he'll flop
Milner - think he'll do well

    For example, that is.

    1. Waterboyd
      • 11 Years

Rooney: Of course big things, but like normal he won't be a good buy a few weeks later.
      Kane: Flop.
Milner: I miss you come back of course you'll do well 🙂
      Depay: Flop.
Firmino: Good punt and a half.
Sturridge: Won't do as well this season.

My contentious one is going without Hazard.
And potentially going without Ivanovic, Costa or Fabregas too.
Basically a gamble on Chelsea starting slower than they did last year (or at least slow enough as to not justify the big price tags)

My thoughts are very similar to Limpar's post. I have opinions on teams first, then I have a look at fixtures, then I consider rotation. I gamble on Chelsea's slow start, Soton's solid defence and West Ham - I guess they can be last year's Swansea(start wise) and even better.

rotate 2 and use a dud 4m for start of season. the 2-5-3 gimmick will cover a bad injury to ur defenders and give u time to get 2 ft and solve the issue

The case for Kolarov is quite compelling even though he is a rotation risk... Need to have a playing bench for sure. Good thing is he does not make 1pt cameos. So even if he plays every alternate week, he could be golden given attacking returns. Thoughts on:

    Azpi - Kolarov - Huth - Bassong - Francis

Really not fond of picking Wilson though (or any of the cheap strikers except Sakho to be to be honest). But the only way to fit in a more expensive striker is to downgrade Mane.

  27. dunkle

Well it certainly is that time of year
Hours "wasted" tinkering teams just wanting the season to start

Some good teams here - im more stumped this year than ever
having previously had Ivanovic, Hazard and Darmian in squad I have again fiddled and downgraded to come up with the following

    Cech - Ruddy
    Huth - Richards - Mings - Targett
    Fabregas - Depay - Silva - Henderson
    Deeney - Costa - Rooney

Which leaves me money for Costa to Aguero should that be needed

As a United fan I always want to try and have cover, have strong feeling about Rooney and taken the gamble on Depay (if switched would be to another United player)

Silva is my big ? as downgrading him would allow upgrade of Fabregas > Hazard but as a pairing i think maybe Silva + Fabregas may earn more than Hazard + 8 Million midfielder

Anyway - any suggestions or feeback be appreciated

Is there a single 4m defender who might be a starter? With a relatively early WC likely, I can't see myself using all 5 defenders, and PB-The-Vet above has reminded me of the 2-5-3 chip if I do have an injury crisis at the back.
