Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

I haven't seen any "Arsenal start the season slowly" talks on here. Isn't that also a pattern over the last few years? Especially defensively.

didnt they start with a few clean sheets a couple of seasons ago after bould took over as defensive coach? other than yeah they do tend to concede at the start fo the season

Exactly. They usually blow their title chances in the first 10-12 games or so mainly by conceding silly goals. I see one of Cech,Kosc,Mertsacker in most teams. Some say Kosc is essential.

yeah they tend to start badly then pick up form mid season before tailing off again around feb/march then finish strongly, same pattern almost every yr

Arsenal are closing in on Karim Benzema, with Real Madrid set to accept the Gunners' €45 million (£31.3m) bid for the Frenchman. Los Blancos had been reluctant to sell, but now hope to use the money to fund a move for Marco Reus.

I've found myself in a position where I'll be doubling up on either Sunderland or Leicester. I have Panti and Ulloa, and then either Coates or Huth. The rest of my defence is Mings, Ivanovic, Mertesacker, Targett. Which is preferable, or is there an alternative?

      Nay to Schneiderlin.

As for Henderson, with Coutinho, Firmino and Milner all playing further up the pitch than him, his returns will be limited - mostly to just penalties, if you're looking only at that. Certainly not a bad player to own but I prefer Tadic and Chadli over him.

How is my team looking? I'm concerned I might be a little light up front.

    Pantilimon · Hennessey
Koscielny · Azpilicueta · Cedric (Huth · Francis)
Hazard · Walcott · Mané · Milner (Wanyama)
    Aguero · Sakho · Deeney

(If Aguero isn't fit, then I will start with Rooney + 2.5 in the bank)

After 18th change this week my team looks like this:

    Ruddy/Butland
    Azpi Moreno/Kaboul Williams/Huth
    Cazorla Hazard Henderson Ki 4.5
    Costa Rooney Ighalo
    2.5 ITB

    - I am quite satisfied with this pair, didn't make a change there from beginning
    - Williams/Huth pair looks very good for me, as well as Liverpool home fixtures. Kaboul over Norwich defender - worse rotation with Liverpool but I didn't want to double defence with 2 Norwich players
    - I'd go for Sakho instead of Moreno but Frenchmen is quite injury prone so I am not much interested in him at this point
    - At the beginning for 8.5 mid was Mata but I decided to have Arsenal midfielder - so Caz in my team.
    - Henderson over Chadli/Milner - I'll probably begin with this choice
    - In front Ighalo to save 0.5 - I can go for Deeney as well
    - Williams&Huth in defence, Hazard in midfield, Rooney in attack - a must, until one of them get injured
    - After GW1 Costa -> Aguero

So that's my point of view on my team.
Now please help me with doubts, yes or no:
    1) Azpi, Moreno -> Ivan, Muniesa or Wollscheid - depends on Stoke's preseason
    2) Ighalo -> Deeney - or do you have other idea which player upgrade for 0.5?

    Thanks in advance

          I know, haha.

Many of my teammates are fans as well.

          Swap Moreno for Sakho.

Not sure about Kaboul and Ighalo. Rest looks good.

I'll do Moreno -> Sakho and pray for him not to get injured.
Kaboul should stay as good rotation option for Liverpool defender. With Panti in goal and good home fixtures I was not able to find better 4.5 option to rotate with Liverpool.
I am not sure about Ighalo as well but there are not many good options in fwd line for 5.0-5.5. Maybe you can give me a hint on this?

Good luck to you and your teammates!

Good team and well reasoned. I would keep Azpilicueta and Moreno over Ivanovic and Muniesa/Wollscheid.

To upgrade Ighalo to Deeney I think you'd have to downgrade Williams to a 4.5, but that would affect your rotation. Other option would be to just go with Ruddy/Rudd in goal, but again then you can't rotate.

        Thanks for reply.
I think is better idea to have 2 gks rotating
I can upgrade to Deeney without problem - 2.5 ITB but I need 2.0 to upgrade Costa to Aguero after GW1. Rooney will stay in my team. The point: is it worth it? Or is there any other position in need to upgrade by 0.5?

Yes - his cousins support Lyon as well, combined with cheap tickets and friendly atmosphere, it's the perfect first match - just wish it wasn't so late!

Yeah a long day as well. I go every year but go on the Sunday so you can see the trophy lifted. Atmosphere very quiet but that's probably ideal for a five year old who's never been to a game before.

I wonder about Targett, you like the idea of having him for a couple of weeks only?

double Arsenal, I like it 🙂 Although I cant really get behind an attacking rotation, will home performances affect Sakho and Ritchie as much as defenders?

ye gaz plan is to have targett for only couple of weeks, thinking of playing wild card early. double arsenal to see if theo holds a place and great fixtures and wanting to see what happens with man u attacking mids. ye i dont normally do this, but ham and bournmouth do this really well, so would you downgrade ritchie to maybe wanayama/anya and could upgrade sakho to gomez or mid or a defender, my brain is actually starting to hurt now, got about 15 tablet teams...
