On Tuesday, Newcastle completed the signing of Serbia international striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £13 million. The 20-year-old has penned a five-year contract at St James’ Park and becomes the fourth biggest transfer in the Magpies’ history.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Mitrovic reckons his style of play is perfect for the physically demanding Premier League:

“I’m aggressive, strong. I’m a goalscorer. I am a real number nine, the penalty box is my place. My position is through the middle, I’m like a striker who has played here before – from Alan Shearer to Papiss. They are big names and I hope I can make a similar impact. Alan Shearer is a real legend and one of my heroes. That and Drogba is how I like to play and it’s an honour to play at this club. I’m a physical sort of player. I like to fight and score goals.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Smederevo, Mitrovic joined the Partizan youth system in 2005 as a ten-year-old and spent the next six years honing his skills. He then made his senior debut with affiliated side Teleoptik, where he scored seven times in 25 league outings during the 2011/12 season.

In the summer of 2012, Mitrovic signed his first professional contract with Partizan, securing a four-year deal. He made 28 league appearances in the 2012/13 campaign, scoring 13 goals, which persuaded Anderlecht to pay a club-record transfer fee of €5 million for his seervices

During his first year in Belgium, Mitrovic notched 16 goals in 32 league appearances, and also registered six assists. Last season, he was even more prolific, netting 20 times in 37 league outings, while the Serbian also provided four assists, and scored two goals in five Champions League appearances, including a late equaliser in a 3-3 draw against Arsenal.

Mitrovic scored nine goals in 18 appearances for the Serbia U19 and U21 sides, and was named Player of the Tournament in the 2013 UEFA Under-19 Championships, which Serbia won. He made his senior debut against Belgium in June 2013 and currently has one goal from 13 international caps, which came in a 1-1 draw against Croatia in September 2013.

THE PROSPECTS

With Newcastle boss Steve McClaren favouring a 4-2-3-1 system so far during pre-season, it looks as if Mitrovic will be competing with Papiss Cisse for the central role up front, with fellow forwards Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere both capable of playing across the forward line. Given that McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby, he’s clearly in favour of a lone-striker system, and with rumours increasing of a move away for Cisse, it seems that the new boy could quickly barge his way to the top of the pecking order.

Discussing his latest big-money acquisition, McClaren was quick to point out that he’ll afford him time to settle, if needs be:

“I think he’ll fit right in. Players like that tend to. He has to adapt but he’s adapted everywhere he’s been. He’s only very young, he made his debut in Serbia and moved to Anderlecht so he’s already made one move and adapted to a different league so he’s got experience of that at a young age. Now he’s got to do it again, adapt to our training and the Premier League but he’s a good acquisition for the squad. He brings goals. He’s got potential and talent and I think that’s an ideal signing and profile for the football club and we want to develop him and bring him in and give him the experience and however long it takes to get him used to the Premier League.”

Given Cisse scored 11 league goals in just 22 appearances last season, he can also make a strong claim for the lone-striker role during the forthcoming campaign, should he remain on Tyneside. The issue here, of course, is the Senegal international’s propensity for picking up injuries which have severely restricted his pitch time over the last couple of seasons. With question marks over Cisse’s ability to last the distance during matches, it’s surely only a matter of time before he’s ousted as the club’s first-choice forward.

Standing six foot two-and-a-half, Mitrovic is more of a target-man type than Cisse and will offer McClaren’s side a far more robust presence up top. Looking at the stats, he won 2.4 aerial duels per match in last year’s Champions League, whilst Cisse averaged 0.9 in the Premier League.

Mitrovic joins a Newcastle side that scored a paltry 40 goals last season – a tally superior to only five other teams in the top flight. The addition of Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum should certainly boost the creativity of the side, while Siem de Jong is fully fit for the new campaign after only making four appearances last time around. With the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Jack Colback in midfield, and young Rolando Aarons sparkling in pre-season, McClaren – who is still targeting a few more signings – is looking for a top-eight finish.

From a Fantasy perspective, though, the Magpies’ opening fixtures look a real deterrent – Newcastle face six of last season’s top eight over the course of the first eight Gameweeks, including away trips to Arsenal and Manchester City.

Priced at a very reasonable 6.5, Mitrovic costs you the same as West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who has four home clashes (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks, for example. If, as expected, he ousts Cisse from the first XI, the Serbian’s opening schedule suggests we’d be best avoiding for now and allowing him time to settle before the fixtures turn far kinder around the Gameweek 9 mark.

It seems to me some people are already making themselves vulnerable to taking hits very early in the season by making too many risks early on. We already know we will probably need Aguero in GW4. This alone is 2 FTs if you don't want to keep a lot of money itb. So adding to that getting Walcott who you'll probably need out by GW 2 or 3, having Targett or any non-nailed 4.0 defender, taking punts on promoted players like Richie or new to the league like Depay, you might find your team a mess early on. I know some will WC on GW 4 but not everybody will do that. Better to linit the risks early on imo until we have a clearer picture.

If Depay achieves the very high ownership that it looks like he may, then he is the one to pick and hide behind. A couple more goals in pre season and he'll be on 50%...maybe more.

Like the post says it's definitely a gamble, with no prem experience.

Oh aye....just less of a gamble with such high ownership compared to a low one, if he gets that high that is.

Depay is my 1 calculated risk at the moment. I believe a goal in GW1 and everyone will be rushing to get him. That is the thing about risks on premium players in big clubs and players fom promoted teams. If Richie was to score in GW1, I doubt there would be a bandwagon instantly. With budget players, you have the luxury to wait 2 or 3 GWs and ignore a price rise or 2. With premium players you cannot afford that.

"We already know we will probably need Aguero in GW4. This alone is 2 FTs if you don't want to keep a lot of money itb."

      Start with him. 🙄

"So adding to that getting Walcott who you'll probably need out by GW 2 or 3"

You're completely wrong on that one, there is a possibility, but not a high probability.

"having Targett or any non-nailed 4.0 defender"

I have a bench and four other defenders. I could keep him until December and I doubt it'll affect my team's performance much, if at all.

"taking punts on promoted players like Richie or new to the league like Depay"

There is a difference between a punt and a calculated risk. You can have one or two duds but options will always emerge within any price bracket as a replacement, this is hardly a huge negative.

        Kun injured no?

Targett we can live with yes

But premium players with no experience, is a gamble with great gains and great loses, so if you fancy the risk go for it, but there many more reliable in that price range and at Utd Mata.

Starting with Aguero isn't very wise. Fixtures aren't good and he'll probably get 20-30 mins in the first 2 or 3 games.

When Sanchez is back, Walcott makes way it is as simple as that. You are placing your hope on Giroud misfiring and Walcott taking his place but this isn't very likely either. Giroud is their only physical presence up top, his linking play is brilliant. He is important to Arsenal not only for the goals. Walcott cannot offer that.

I agree about punts and calculated risks. But still you don't want to take 3 or 4 risks at the same time. You cannot say that Walcott is not a huge risk for example.

So you're telling me you'll sell Aguero when the fixtures aren't good? That's what it sounds like to me. His fitness isn't an issue, for a player that plays 70-odd minutes with very limited defensive duties I think fitness really won't be a worry, injury is the only limiting factor. We'll hear from Pellegrini soon but I can assure you there's a 90%+ chance of him starting GW2.

You're still wrong on Walcott. He and Sánchez can play together without compromising Giroud.

          Coquelin, Santi
          Walcott, Ozil, Sánchez,
          Giroud.

Even if he doesn't start, you may even get 20-odd minutes up front if he comes on for a tired Giroud after all his trotting around. A fully fit Walcott is still undroppable in my book, and maybe Wenger's too. Looking at the fixtures, I think he can give Sánchez a deserved extended rest without worrying about his loss.

I am not saying Aguero should be sold when his fixtures turn but add to that getting 20-30 mins in the first 2 or 3 games and it is not worth it. City can afford to not start him against Chelsea. They have good options.

I don't think I've ever seen Walcott play on the left tbh.

"Even if he doesn't start, you may even get 20-odd minutes up front if he comes on for a tired Giroud after all his trotting around"

I never touch a player who will get 20 mins a game unless its Messi or Ronaldo. A lot of 1 pointers all over it.

Except it's nowhere near as simple as Walcott dropping as soon as Sanchez is back.. If anything, that is the very least likely thing to happen.

Absolutely agree. That's what happened to me last year. I when I eventually copped it was too late and never recovered. Team was a disaster for the first couple of months. I am making sure I have know proven FPL point getters in the spine of my team.

Caz deep roll won't effect his point, he can start and finish attacks from there with timely runs and artistic passing, along with Pens, Caz is the man at Arsenal.

I think it will. I doubt you would consider him if he did not have penalties. Actually, I had him in my first draft but changed to Ozil. Santi has great shooting ability, but he just doesn't shoot very much. His penalty streak last year was also what mostly made him such a good choice, I am not very confident that will happen again.

Ozil is not that different, he also doesn't like to shoot, but is central to almost everything Arsenal does and is probably one of the first names on the team sheet. I thought he was excellent in the FA cup final and haven't seen him play that good since joining us. I also want so see Ozil link up with Theo, that hasn't really happened before because of injuries and he did have his first full pre-season this year so I believe he is ready to shine.

All in all, I guess Santi is a good choice, but I opted for Ozil instead.

I'de like to get your thoughts if I could...

    Butland Schwarzer
    Janmaat Huth Ivanovic Targett Saylor
    Depay Fabregas Ayew Walcott Coquelin
    Aguero Rooney Wilson

I know my defence is light weight but i’m planning on downgrading Ivan and upgrading Targett after the first few weeks.

Aguero > Costa if he’s not going to be fit for the start of the season with 2mill ITB to get him in
Ivan > Cedric & Walcott > Sanchez is also an easy move to make GW3/4

That Arsenal spot is very valuable. You'll want 3 Arsenal players at some point in the season that is guaranteed. If they start strong and with their fixtures, that could be very soon as well.

        RMT

        Schmeichel
        Azpil clyne o'shea
        Sterling Walcott payet hazard depay
        Benteke ighalo

        Butland ward sakho lescott

It seems a bit of a struggle picking between hendo/Milner/chadli/tadic and also my 5m to 5.5m mid. So what about a 5 in mid 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 dependant on fixtures approach initially then downgrading the one from sterling/Walcott that doesn't fire to the 7m mid that is firing and depay/payet to the relevant 5m to 6m mid that starts well in week two/week three allowing me tekkers to aguero for week 4. And if all my mids start well, then happy days and I'll have a decision to make.

Appreciate the reply. Being weak up front is kind of the point to allow 5 mids so basically I'll never be playing 3 strikers. I get that it will receive the weak up front feedback especially in comparison to all the RMTs out there but it's trying to be a little different in its approach

So the consensus seemed to be that Benteke, had he been a Pool striker when the game opened, would likely be 0.5-1m more expensive.

Does this mean we might be getting a little bit of extra value by picking him? Does this affect your decision about him at all?

I'm tempted by him. Just saw your team last page Bubz, what's your plan to get Aguero? Going to have a dilemma if Rooney starts well?

I don't really have a plan. Will just have to see how things go, and try to save a transfer before gw4. If Rooney is firing enough to make me want to keep him, then there might not be an urgent need for Aguero anyway.

This is the thing keeping me with my current team (almost identical to your earlier one). Gives the option to lose either Costa or Rooney, and gives 3 midfielders who can go to Chadli/Payet et al.

Hazard and Benteke are tempting though...

        http://gyazo.com/6f1359edc6277a79a094987879a85caa

        1) Triple CHE defence - I know a lot won't like this, but can you tell me WHY its a bad idea?
        2) Same question regarding only having players from 4 teams (the best team in the league and the 3 with the best fixtures)
        3) any other concerns?

Why not? Chelsea conceded a total of 3 goals in 6 games against City, Arsenal, United last season. They defend even more solidly in those games.

I think it's quite good actually.

How to improve it? Well assuming a wildcard before GW5 (I guess that's your plan) then you will have 3 FTs before then. Plan how to use them.

For instance, Spurs have worthwhile opening fixtures. If you downgraded Cazorla to Chadli you could start with Lukaku instead of J-Rod for the plum GW1 fixture. 0.5 in the bank. Then Lukaku to Sakho for GW2-4. 2.0 in the bank. Then in GW3 or 4 Walcott to Ozil/Cazorla (Sanchez back by then, Walcott less nailed on), 2.5 in the bank. Then GW4 Aguero for Rooney, 0.0 in the bank. No hits taken, then the wildcard.

Obviously an injury could require an adjustment to that but if you are working on the basis of 4 weeks it makes sense to plan it through.

In addition by losing J-Rod you could upgrade a 4.0 defender to Targett (who probably gets the first few games) and have an additional playing substitute in your squad.

Thanks for your views. Slightly wary of planning transfers, but I do like the idea of lukaku then Sakho. I'll look into it

Well, it's nice to see a clear strategy and a team planned against that strategy. If you are planning a wildcard after 4 gameweeks then build a squad for 4 gameweeks. 🙂

The only wrinkle is you have to beware of price changes in those 4 gameweeks though. An 0.1 drop by one player you have or a 0.1 rise for someone you will want from GW5 could prove pesky.

See what you mean but feel they're too expensive for what they give you as in the defence isn't as solid as it was 2 years ago. Silva too much this year so unless he goes mental with the points I won't be having him. Yaya is one to watch for his price and obviously I'll be putting Aguero in at some point regardless of the price!

Can't even spell 'characters' right, let alone make a funny joke. *shakes head*

@DoosnIs Burke close to being nailed? At 4.0 and with these fixtures its worth the risk.

WHM signed Jenkinson. Burke was a great option before that.

No. He is currently third in line. But Joey seems to be having some problems with Slaven ...

So he can play LB? I am not sure what you mean. I am not very knowledgeable about WH defenders.

        Current draft

        Schmeichel, Hennessey

        Ivanovic, Shaw, Cédric, Francis, Prödl

        Mané, Cazorla, Hazard, Barry, Anya

        Rooney, Costa, Sakho

I have question marks over Shaw and Barry. It looks like i may be stuck with Barry, Prodl, Francis and Anya for the 11th spot on the team and plan to rotate.

I have thought about Shaw and whether Blind might get in ahead, but personally, big fan of Blind and he did well there last season, but i just though his pace and positioning sometimes let him down and Shaw should get in ahead of him because of this.

Another point to make is that this year I view Ivanovic and Hazard as a must have. Proven quantities upon which to build the team around. Aguero can be ignored but only if I have these two (and Costa and Rooney). I ignored my defence last year and my points tally showed it.

        Any thoughts?
