Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

haha I know what you mean. All the more reason to bring him up i reckon. A Chelsea front-four guy with his qualities should have more of the spotlight. His FPL history holds it against him, but i have a feeling it's "his year"

Was reading something today that mentioned that little scut El Hadji Diouf.
2 goals on his league debut for Liverpool.
1 goal in his subsequent 54 league appearances.

What an FPL asset he would've been.

    Sooo..

    Schmeichel (Hennessey)
    Azpiliceuta Francis Huth (Jenkinson, O'Shea)
    Walcott Mane Hazard Henderson (Wanyama)
    Costa Rooney Defoe

To Ivan or not to Ivan has really played with me but I'm set on getting Azpi + 5m defender instead. 5m defender allows WHU/SOT/WBA/LIV as options.

Not too keen on Defoe but not too keen on Deen-ey either. May just be tempted to get Adebayor if he joins Villa.

    Thoughts? :).

I like him a lot, think he's possibly the best GW2 captain on paper. Stoke and Arsenal away in the first three are tough as it comes though. I'm happy to leave him for the first couple of games, and see how well he fits into the side. If the signs are good, I'll look at bringing him in as an Aguero makeweight in GW4 (from when Liverpool have WHM/mun/NOR/AVL).

Wouldn't go for Milner. Got to see how the midfield partnership with Henderson is going to work. Presumably one of them will hold, and if it's Milner then he's worthless. Think Kane will suffer second season syndrome and strikers like Benteke and Giroud will work out cheaper.

Were you to replace Kane, downgrade Ivanovic to Azpi and downgrade Toure to a cheaper midfielder who also takes pens/set pieces (Cabaye, Siggy or Adam all spring to mind) I think you'd generate enough cash to substantially improve on Danny Graham up front.

    RMT Please guys?

    Schmeichel (Schwarzer)

Azpi Huth Francis (Cresswell) (O Shea)

    Hazard Sterling Walcott Henderson (Fletcher)

    Rooney Benteke Sakho

Thought I'd post some of my reasoning for my picks as well to both help me out/provoke some discussion.

I'm actually not a massive fan of my Cresswell pick, but with West Ham facing Leicester and then Bournemouth at home GW's 2 and 3 I figured doubling up on West ham makes sense.

I'm unsure whether to go a £6.5m midfielder + Costa instead of Walcott+ Benteke at the start to make it easier to bring in Aguero for GW, because as things stand unless I use a GW4 wildcard I'm pretty much forced to make multiple subs.

Any better 4.5 defenders than Francis I can pick that rotate well with the defenders I already have?

Finally should I downgrade Sakho to Deeney and upgrade Schwarzer so that I have two playing goalkeepers?

Have you considered Cresswell to Jenkinson? Less money on the bench, still got the great home fixtures, and the 0.5m could let you get Costa and Chadli for Sterling/Walcott and Benteke, if you were worried that no-one stands out at 6.5...

Morgan when he's back, and Huth are the fully nailed on. Wasilewski is further down the pecking order. Can't see this changing in the Rainieri regime.

If a team has their best fixture run of the season, whats your opinions on having double defenders? Does it matter on what team it is?

yes. and hard to tell best fixture at this early stage, depends on form etc like leicester last year

It's just a gamble. If you fancy the team to do well then it can pay dividends. I'm personally going for Jenkinson and Ogbonna because after GW1 (they will be benched) they have a great run of fixtures and at 5m each they are very reasonable.

I think he might start on the bench and used as an impact sub, but he could do very well. It is a gamble because of his injury record, but he's definitely one to look out for.

Blackburn wanted to keep him, but he left because he wanted to play up top (and not a winger) I´m not sure why he´s classified as a midfielder here, but I´m pretty sure he will play striker (if he can nail down a spot) Lots of potential, pacy and strong (unfortunately the goals have been missing so far) One to watch.

Schneiderlin will probably play very deep in the double pivot with Schweinsteiger or Carrick. Ozil seems to lose out points-wise to Cazorla or Ramsey. I'd find alternatives to those 2. Everything else looks good.

I have Benteke and am going to go for Hendo or Milner.

I'm airing towards Hendo because he short take more free kicks and corners and at least then l will have Pool's penalty taker locked up.

I prefer Henderson over Milner, mainly because there's no longer a Glen Johnson at the club that seemed to be the sole responsibility of JH to cover whenever GJ went off on one of his headless chicken forays to a part of the pitch where the game wasn't being played.
