Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable 5.5m 4th mid? Ki, Schneiderlin or perhaps need to upgrade to Ritchie? Johnson from NOR rates well on RMT..

cheers and good morning (from Oz)..

thanks.. I think I'm down to a 5.5 mid + Sakho or Rictchie + Deeney/Wilson. It sort of looks like this:

        Butland | Ruddy

        Azpi | Cedric | Huth | Baker | O’Shea

        Haz | Ozil | Mane | Milner/Hendo | Wanyama

        Costa | Rooney | Deeney

Costa > Aguero and Mane > Ritchie when Aguero fit

have a great day, or night..

Both could work well. I think at some point you might say "I wish I had gone with Haz" - but over the first few weeks I can't see Silva 'exploding". I'm going Haz, Costa and Azpi (Costa out for Aguero).

    Speroni - Butland

Could be great with their starting fixtures. Has looked decent in pre-season by all accounts. Got Benteke currently, but want to be sure he'll play GW 1. Might be best to wait and see on him, could find out if he's on pens too.

How do you say that?Just by seeing it is pool vs bournemouth? A striker who hasnt had any pre season with his new club will just be ready for that fixture..Bou will be pumped up for this and it is too early to say if benteke will be the "stand out"captaincy option for that week.

however, City's first 4 games throw me off because I am open to WC'ing in the first 8 weeks which means I want a team more suited for that duration. Personally I think an Arsenal and Chelsea defender will be the necessities for this years campaign. they'll be going head to head and with Cech in net, expect a lot more clean sheets.

restricting yourself for the time being, with the points you could have made from that extra 5 mil even if you have to take a hit then it will still be worth it as you accumulated more points from the upgraded players

    2. joinho
      • 16 Years

By not spending that 5m on your GW1 team you could lose out on loads of points in the 1st couple of GW's, better to spend it and have a flexable team with which your able to swap around to bring in Aguero and Sanchez

Because in the 2-4 weeks that you wait for them to be selected (and not necessarily in form from match 1), everyone else has a squad of 100m vs your 95m. I'd leave 2m in the bank max.

Maybe just start with Richie instead of Mane, saves a transfer. Personally, I'd bin Ivan for Cresswell and upgrade Mane to Sterling. Also Huth in for Morgan.

Anyone else surprised City haven't been more active in the transfer market after not winning last season? I know they've bought Sterling and Delph but that was more out of need to buy English players to fit quotas.

I know they've tended to do late business in the past but lots of the big names (bar Pogba) have already made their moves.

Do people see them buying big in August? De Bruyne heavily rumoured but whilst I rate him highly, some extortionate fees being talked about.

They needed a huge restructure with aging players and needing HG players to replace the outgoing players. Getting young HG players was always going to be the priority this season and with Delph, Roberts and Sterling they have taken the first few steps towards it. I see this as a transitional season for City and don't expect huge movement unless players go out.

      1. CABAYE4

I expected some big-ish names to be sold (Nasri, Dzeko etc.) to make room for new players.

The restructure was definitely needed but I expected it to be accompanied by a couple of big name signings.

Jovetic & Dzeko must be on a bomb. Think they will both go on loan or be sold to make way for two good signings. On probably will be De Bruyne. Not sure on the other though??

They've currently spent around £70M and there's still over a month of the window left....

      Sterling - £49M
      Roberts - £6M rising to £11M
      Delph - £8M
      Ünal - £2M

        I guess so.

For some reason Sterling doesn't seem like a big deal to me despite the big outlay and his clear ability/potential.

I thought they'd go all out to sign Vidal/Pogba.

Hi guys, care to RMT please ?
I've included a few thoughts below as I find it pointless just posting the bare squad

    Cech
    Ivanovic Clyne Kolarov
    Hazard Walcott Henderson Sterling Depay
    Benteke Wilson

    Hennesey Deeney Targett S.Taylor

    Negatives:
    1. Very light up top, I want Aguero but his uncertainty of a GW1 start and the fact that I can make a much more balanced team without him I feel it might be better to start without.
Only other options is Rooney and Costa, Not sold on Rooney and I'm hoping on Depay starting well. Hazard will cover me chelsea-wise. I will rotate Wilson and Deeney
    2. 3 Liverpool players, although I think if you take each individually they are solid picks
    3. Kolarov's uncertainty of starts week in week out. I love him as an fpl player for some reason so thats why i've included him, may switch to Darmian or another if I get sense

    Positives:
    1. Very strong GK, defense and midfield. There are so many quality options in midfield and lack of striking options I feel this season may be the one to build from the back as such and have a strong defense and midfield by going 3-5-2
    2. I want to have attacking coverage of all the top teams i.e. Chelsea, United, City, Liverpool and Arsenal that is covered and is well balanced
    3. Apart from Depay and the two promoted strikers all the players are established PL players and are used to playing in the PL, i.e. there isn't many new PL player risks and you at least know what your getting with them (within reason, obviously can't predict the future)

What do you think ? Any advice is much appreciated

Big holes in team and way too many punts in squad. Have a read of Simon Marches article; need to mitigate risk with more conservative picks. For example, we all love Kolarov yet he's too risky to start with.

You need to start off with a very stable team, Kolatov isn't one of them. (Targett isn't either if he requires a -4 in a few weeks)

Liverpool don't have very good fixtures in my opinion, to justify your tripling up anyway.
Your choice of strikers has tremendous potential of leaving you behind, too risky in my opinion.

I don't think the .5 cost difference between him and the other 8.5's is a fair reflection of the numbers he put up last season. That .5 is difference between a 7/10 and an 8/10 team.

Maybe not, but you can't look on last season. He was in an underperforming side. Surrounded by better players, he should in theory improve those numbers. Most see him as a viable alternative to Silva who's 1m more
