Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

"I think in football it's so important to work hard but also resting has the same importance," the boss declared. "You have so many games throughout the year, that if you don't give them 30 days after they've finished their internationals, it's very difficult for them to work hard. As you say they started one week later but they should arrive in their best shape for the start of the Premier League.

"It's more difficult for the South American players because Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho, they finished later, the first days of June, so they won't have 30 days.

Anyone counted 30 days from Kun's last game already?

I'm sure he's signed contracts there before as Foster's understudy so he seems happy to be in employment. Hennessy ensures they have back up until Foster's return.

from a football prospective, I actually think Myhill is the better keeper out of the two. I hope we do get a 4.0 goalie though.

He's a decent keeper. Surely a few million would have to be paid for Hennessy only for him to become 3rd choice in 2 months? Jeremy Peace is not the sort of bloke to do that.

If Ibra comes i seriously think they would be number one candidate to win the title, if he is injury free. I am really not a utd fan, on the contrary, but i think this is pretty realistic. I would love for him to come, since that would raise "fun" level in watching 4 top teams battling for the title.

Repost as penultimate bottom of the page again!!

Couple of questions for you based on current team

    Schmeichel
    Ivanovic Yoshida Targett
    Hazard Mata Cazorla Mane
    Costa Benteke Sakho

    Hamer Anya Francis Prodl

    £100 spent

Is Yoshida nailed? If not then if upgrading to Fonte

Would you replace Mane with Henderson (or another)
Or replace Sakho with Deeney (or another)

    Cheers!

Wenger doesn't rotate. I can't see him getting any more than the very occasional start (most likely in the cups) and 20-30 min cameos. At least while Coquelin is fit. And that's not mentioning if Arsenal sign another DM. Cazorla, Ramsey(by way of another AM) and Wilshere all miles ahead of him in the pecking order.

    Current team is:

    Panti/Hennessy
    Williams Azpi Huth Lescott Turner
    Hazard Mane Wanyama Walcott Sterling
    Rooney Benteke Deeney

Just wondering would people recommend different defenders for these price points? I want to keep the rest of team roughly the same at this point (that'll probably change about a dozen times before August 8th :p) but not sure if I should be happy with this backline...

Lots of paying around this week. But how's this draft so far?

    Cech - Butland
    Clyne - Jagielka - Fonte - s.Taylor - Baker
    Hazard - Depay - Matic - Schneiderlin - Wanayama
    Costa - Aguero - Diouf

    Am I too Chelsea/ManUtd heavy?

And Aguero could be Benteke for the first week.

Matic and Schneiderlin aren't great FPL options, you've picked a solid real life team, not an FPL team.

Also Taylor and Baker won't play

£10m on keepers is unnecessary. If you're going for a £5.5 keeper you're better off with a £4.0 bench options back up.

In defence I'd drop Jagielka (nasty early fixtures) and Clyne and downgrade Fonte to Cedric. Use the change to get a premium Chelsea defender and a decent £4.5m rotator.

Matic and Scneiderlin scream 2/3 pointers at best.

Diouf would be a good pick and was in my team originally too - but the new forward gives indication that his minutes will be limited more

I have no problem with Villa defenders but I think Micah Richards is the pick there not Nathan Baker.

Giroud looks like he'll battle with Theo for minutes, I think spending an extra £0.5m on Kane who also has great early fixtures is better.

I'd look at downgrading Tekkers to a £6.0-£7.0 striker and get a premium Chelsea defender to plug in and play all season long.

This is a personal invitation to Epic Fail and Billy Gilmore

Draft Fantasy Football seems to be flavour of the month. I've always wanted to play but my mates aren't FPL addicts so there wasn't any point starting one up. I was advised of this game in the community article and it's brilliant. Everything is the same as FPL except no captains and no bonus points. I'm looking to play in a league with 7 other players who are committed to play till the end. I'm giving this invitation to posters on here who I recognize as regulars as that will hopefully mean a strong league with committed players. Have a look at the format in the link below and enter if you're up for it.

        https://draftfantasyfootball.co.uk
        League ID: 3TDACSyND9wxBgond
        Password: ffskinnear

The league settings aren't final, I can make adjustments once we have full players. You are allowed 5 teams in different leagues if you want to play in other leagues.

Please don't enter uninvited and don't be offended as it's essential to have active players in a draft league. Feel free to use the website to set up your own leagues

I have him at the moment.

I think him or Tadic are the best routes into Southampton attacking points. Tadic was great before his injury and Pellé is the main man up font.

In my team it's either him or Kane as my 2nd striker. I think Kane is going to do really well with those early fixtures too.

I've switched from Giroud to Pelle to try and free up funds for my weak defence, problem is I don't see a drastic improvement from 4.5m defenders to 5.5m defenders - if you're not spending 6m+ there doesn't seem to be any point.

I'm in the UK but going to be travelling during draft time. I'm just going to make a list of the players I want, and let it auto select.

Is it a disaster to go without Kun? Currently I'm on Costa, Rooney, Deeney and I like it but I know that alot of ppl in my ML r gonna pick Aguero and I'm freaking out

It's possible to go without, if you use the money wisely. Let us know how you get on.
