After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

      “We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

    Just for fun, then - a 3 GW team

    Ruddy, Rudd

    Darmian, Huth, Francis, Tomkins, Kaboul

    Hazard, Walcott, Tadic, Depay, Ritchie

    Rooney, Sakho, Lukaku (To become Tekkers in GW2)

    I really think this works IF I definitely WC after 3 GWs.

          Paulista is apparently going to play more games this season. I wouldn't be too worried of Mertesacker not starting because him and Kosc have a stable relationship at the back that Wenger won't want to disrupt.

    Why are most of you so hot on the idea of wildcarding in GW4? I take it most of you want to use the 2nd WC in a big DGW; if this is the case then you'll have to wait for at least 25 GWs to use the WC which will make it very hard to be competitive with the top players imo.
    In my experience most of the people who wildcarded in GW4 in pre season have done well initially after but have struggled when close to the January WC around GW20. This means that you could have to prematurely use your 2nd WC that you wanted to save or lose points against the competition.

    1. Trigg ⭐️
      • 13 Years

      But the new rules mean that you have to use it before January. When would you say the optimum time to use it is?

      FWIW, I'm warming to the idea. I think with a lot of uncertainty around, it will be useful to see who is nailed on/is a bargain before GW4 and also to get Aguero/Sanchez in after they have been rested.

        GW11. I flew up the rankings from then up until the January wildcard last season because my team always had more good fixtures than most others did. If you plan effectively now there's no need why you should have to use it in GW4, for example, making sure you know how to bring in Aguero/Sanchez.

          But increasing TV, getting the premium players in and getting the bargains in, mean GW4 might be the best time to use it.

          Not saying you're wrong, but there are a few ways that the WC can be used successfully.

        I agree with this. I'm planning on bringing in Aguero for free with 2ft's if everything goes to plan but that won't allow me to get in Sanchez and I'm starting without Hazard. Ideally after WC you will want those 3 in your team

          I think going with all 3 of them is wasting your budget slightly. I don't think you'd be able to captain all 3 of them regularly enough for them all to provide good value. Fabregas/Arsenal mid of Hazard/Sanchez would be a lot better in my opinion.

      With couple of hits (-8), we can easily save our WC from using it on GW4/GW5.

      With preparation of course.

      Good question. I think the new rules on WC use might be causing some to focus on using it too soon.

      I have often used an early wild card, but never by design. I used it when my team was in serious need of repair and would be helped by catching the right bandwagons not just in points but in team value. Using it in gw4 just to catch Aguero and then knowing you won't use one again for 25-30 game weeks makes little sense to me.

        I'm not against using it if your team isn't up to a good standard but planning to use it seems very foolish in my opinion with the rule changes and possibly jeopardising the chance to WC in a big DGW.

          What's interesting is that the first wild card could be used near the end of the first half almost as a holiday fixture prep instead. Could be a nice boost at the time.

    What will you do if Jay Rodriguez scores a hattrick in GW1, or Reece Burke turns out to be a starting 4.0 defender for West Ham? In other words - are you ready to jump on a bandwagon to increase team value, or are your plans to rigid to allow for this? And is it worth taking point hits for price risers?

          Good discussion here. Does this make building TV less important this season? Becuase we probably won't be overhauling our sides till after gw 30 with wc. Meaning our TV may not be put to use as well as it would in seasons past.

              This is very true. Though people who go for extremely high value never end up doing well. There is a happy medium to building tv and it's hard to find it.

              That's one reason why I'm planning a GW4 WC. Then I can get the "must haves" and build team value. The trick is to combine this with future GW, rotation etc. etc.

              but there is always budget options available that will help u even with lower TV.

              its a dangerous game playing to rise TV and you are praying that the premium players will always deliver..which is not the case

              michu, ramsey, lallana, austin, kane are all players that consistently outscore its price. and like last season for parts of it i end up having a lot of cash in bank

                  Last season price rise is slow..so there is less rush to get in players..which is good As u can stick to your plan.

                  I always risk transferring early to rise value. It might backfire but its quite successful most of the time.

                  Try to focus on points though..value comes naturally when u have performing players.

      The easiest time to increase TV is at the start of the season. People can see who the 4m starters and bargains etc are and jump on them early. High team value really helps later in the season. I'd rather not take hits for it though

      if jrod scores a hatty then obviously i will get him in esp soton has decent fixtures. as for burke i will only get him when i have spare FTs.

      as for taking point hits for price risers it really depends..risers that are proven fpl scorers/good fixtures..accompanied by players from your own team not performing will warrant early hits. taking hits just to get value is not advisable..

    RMT please. Be critical if there are faults!

    I think I've done the best I could for the start of the season 🙂

    Starting: 3-5-2

    Panti

    Azp - Kosc - Cedric

    Haz - Ozil - Mane - Hendo - Ritchie

    Rooney - Benteke

    Subs: Schwarz - Sakho - Targett - S.Taylor
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * I don't Like rotating defence & I like my main 3 defenders. Targett is Auto-emergency until Bertrands back.
    * Sakho starts GW 1 on bench as he is facing Arsenal, GW 2 he will switch with Ritchie.
    * Panti will be my GK all year as he saves & Sunderland have a good defence this season under Advocaat.
    Can anyone find any faults & improvements?
        S.Taylor isn't confirmed in my team & I will never be using him anyway. As I wrote above, I'm only mainly focusing on using 3 at the back.... I know Targett get's replaced then but He's the most nailed down 4.0 defender in my squad. Dou get where i'm coming from? 🙂
    Seeing a lot of Francis in RMTs.
    I don't follow the Championship, but I'm generally not too keen on promoted defenders.
    Bournemouth's pledge to keep their attacking philosophy in the Premier League is also somewhat off-putting.
      Schmeichel as your only keeper may be a worry. Also don't like the 4 defender rotation. The attack is very strong.
      I love de Gea as a player, I don't love him as a Fantasy option mainly because the United defense is still not as sorted as I'd like it to be as a fan.
      Get Jenkinson in for Cresswell and upgrade Toby to Mert (without Lloris, Tottenham defense is iffy, even though Toby has shown up in more of my RMTs than I care to admit).
      Solid MF if you are really keen to double up on Chelsea - I would pick either Fab or Haz and upgrade Fletcher.
      Pelle costs too much for how inconsistent he is.
          Choosing between Caz/Ozil is tricky, but as deadline approaches security+ 0.5 becomes more appealing than an outside chance of a brief explosion from Wally.
            Caz is on penalties, which is the only reason for me to pick him over Ozil.
            I'm halfway between dumping Ritchie for Young, but his fixtures are too solid not to take a punt.
              I've been punting on Ritchie being up to PL level. 6m players make punts seem more appealing - one of the newly promoted is going to be a bargain buy and I think it's between him and Deeney.
      Only positive is that if walcott has to be sold in gw2 u can always swap him to a performing arsenal mid.
      But FTs are at the premium especially if u are using them to get in aguero.
      I would say get walcott if u have a solid team instead of punts
    Gw4 team value rises is actually not as important as somr claims.
    Price movement is so slow during international week..and double rises are rare.
    And of course you only earn value when u sell the double risers on wc..but usually those risers are the ones u want to keep in team.
    It is only significant when u have a lot of fallers in your team..but obviously it means that your team itself is poor and u really should have wc
      I agree, the longer the break between gameweeks the slower the rate of which transfers are made.
      I think if you want high TV it is more important to avoid drops rather than catch rises.
      1. money face bandwagon
        • 12 Years
        Yeah and price changes are especially slow last season with wc transfers not taken into account. I would not plan a gw4 wc just to aim for value.
        the rate is slower but there is an extra week...and there is usually someone who gets injured on int break. WC then is very viable imo.
