After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.”

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

Hi all. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on my team and all answers to the questions I pose.

    Butland Ruddy
    Azpi O'Shea Huth Francis Cedric
    Hazard Mane Chadli Walcott Fletcher
    Rooney Wilson Benteke
2.0m in the bank to fund Rooney to Aguero.

The main part of my team that I'm not sure about is Benteke. I don't know if he'll suit Liverpool's style of play but I don't see any better options at his price. Is there anyone you think is better?

    Which do you prefer?
    A. Berahino and Sterling
    B. Benteke and Chadli
Leaning towards B as I think A leaves my front line quite light.

Feel free to leave any suggestions or thoughts.

Pelle or Giroud are other options for Benteke. Pelle means double Soton for you though, and Giroud might be a rotation risk after GW1 (will know more after CS).

I actually think Liverpool have quite nice opening fixtures, don't think I want to go without them.

  17. Are we giving 4-3-3 enough thought?
    Dreaming of Irene
    • 10 Years
    10 years, 4 months ago

Debut post, sorry if TLDR for many.

3-4-3 / 3-5-2 is the preferred formation for many – but consider is this really the best approach early doors? These formations aspire to pack attacking slots with premium resources, however with initial funds limited we struggle to afford enough top notch players to fill all these positions while maintaining team balance, so often compromise by selecting the cheapest defenders.

A number of respected posters have promoted the concepts of VORP and value per £ returns offered from defence. I have considered how much funds are locked into our 4th mid under these formations, typically 6.0 - 7.5M. What return can we realistically expect from players in this price bracket? An assist or clean sheet point every second match, the odd bonus point, a goal every 5 or 6 games – on average maybe 3 - 4 PPG on top of base appearance points.

A strategy I am current favouring is initially setting up for playing 4-3-3, sometimes 4-4-2.
Unless you go ultra-expensive on your front 3, you should easily afford 3 premium end mids that you will play almost all fixtures, with some captain potential.
Now select a 4.5 nailed bench sitter and a 5.0 (5.5 tops) that offers occasional attacking potential that you can play in a 4-4-2 for favourable fixtures and sit 1st or 2nd sub otherwise.
By keeping this player cheap you can free up 1.5 – 2M allowing you to instantly upgrade 3 of your cheap 4.5 defs to 5.0 (maybe one to 5.5) offering much greater security of starts, attacking potential or clean sheets. Playing these upgraded players in a 4-3-3 / 4-4-2 with two rotating 4.5s and the chances are at least one of these three regularly delivers assist, clean sheet or bonus returns in excess of any cheap 4.5 defs and combined returns hopefully exceed the 3-4 point enhanced returns of a 7.0 mid pick.

Admittedly you will never get a Tadic-Bolasie 20+ point explosion with this strategy, but you won’t bench it either when you play your 3rd striker for a better fixture instead. When 4.5 nailed def options become clearer after a few weeks, you can move to them if you want to release funds for more attacking options, however I think the attacking 5.0 defs also offer potential for early price rises. They become transfer magnets for the masses if they grab a goal or assist- clean sheet combo in the first few game weeks (Dier & Moreno say hi). There are a number of good 5.0 def options to bank early price gains and seek new ones as fixtures change weeks 5-8 where the likes of WBA / NEW / EVE fixtures improve and early favourable ones start to turn. When the time feels right you can wildcard and free up these funds from defence and move to 3-4-3 using increased team value to support a 4th premium mid.

Anyone reckon this is a sound strategy, particularly if BPS changes lead to more BAP returns for defs, or stick with tried and tested 3-4-3 ?

Always appreciate a different point of view, even if its unpopular.

While I do agree that the new BPS system will benefit defenders (especially CBs) I don't it warrants a formation change. . Also consider that most people's strategy is to have a set defense so you can use your transfers on the offensive side. You don't want to be wasting transfers on defense.

Much easier to downgrade an expensive attacker to a someone cheaper, in form, in order to free up funds.

I'm personally running 3-5-2 as I believe it takes strikers a bit of time to start clicking at the beginning of the season.

Mids will still dominate the BPS

      Hope that made sense.

Its actually the saving of enforced defence transfers that appeals to me - I have spent ages pondering over questions such as which of Sunderland 4.5s defs will start and the answer is we just don't know yet.

I think many of the 5.0s are in part priced that little bit more because they are safer starting selections with lower rotation risk, Attacking returns or clean sheets will be a bonus but its also about security of starts for me. It is only when the safe 4.5 options become apparent I may consider switching, though I think I will probably look to stay with a couple of solid 5.0 defenders that carry potential additional returns from teams with good fixtures.

        Thanks for the feedback folks.

A strategy that relies on 5.0 defenders increasing in price just seems like an unnecessary risk to me. I still think the likes of Henderson, Milner, Tadic, Chadli, Payet and Siggy are capable of good, consistent point returns. I think it's a nice idea and you've obviously put a lot of thought into it, you should go for it and see what happens.

The strategy is not really based on the 5.0s increasing in value, that's the icing on the cake.
Hard to believe but I culled some of my rationale in the interest of brevity so at least someone would get to the end of my post!!!
Increased security of starts of the 5.0s over 4.5 defs saving the need for early defensive correction so I can concentrate transfers on switching the premium mids and 2nd and 3rd striker to form players and bandwagons is key. The aim is to increase value over the whole team (except I expect the weak 4th mid) through solid picks that are likely to attract many transfers and then release it via wildcard - I will be 4-3-3 with the masses post wildcard.
My gut feeling early on when budget is at its tightest, is with 4 at the back
        3 x 5.0 def + 1 x 4.5 will give better average returns than
        3 x 4.5 def + 6-7.0ish mid
I guess it depends on how well you can pick your 4.5s at the off.

Thanks again for all the helpful feedback and I am honoured by the hulking - probably downhill from this point on.

I think in theory you are right. I reasoned that way last year, but I just don't think it works out in practice. I think you may very well get a great value for a 7.0 fourth midfielder, it might just not be the one you opted for in GW1, but it's much easier to get this years Michu, Siggy or whoever scores great in that price range when you already have one. Just a straight swap or maybe one hit instead of having to upgrade that 4.5 with all that money spread on your defenders.

Cheers for the comment - the 4.5 5th mid stays rooted as 3rd sub going nowhere, he enables Kun being in my line-up.

I think its a very fair point upgrading the 5.0 4th mid won't be easy if using FT but that is where the wildcard comes in to release the value from those defenders and move it forwards once TV has increased a little.

Hopefully at that point there are lots of safe 4.5 defs that have been identified to move to. My initial plan is to deploy this around GW8-9 to capitalise of the new block of fixtures, but this is fluid, part depending on an increase in team value, and more crucially, I haven't bottled it and already used it as a 7-0 is tearing it up!

Once you're on here you'll be flying up the rankings! Top 10k always used to be the aim I think that really needs to be adjusted to 20k now with how many players and how much info there is.

If I keep following up on here week in and week out, is there a slight chance I'll finish top 100k?

Here's my team to start off btw:

                Ruddy/Butland
                Ivanovic- Lescott/Cedric - Huth/Jenkinson
Hazard - Wally - Mane- Ritchie - Wanyama
                Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

What do ya think! GW4 Easy swap Ivano to the best performing 4.5 and Rooney to Aguero.

Read as much as you can before the season kicks off as mistakes are expensive to rectify after that point.

You should comfortably finish top 100k the majority of the game is about being very boring and making the obvious decisions. Its trying to go maverick that often sends you tumbling down the rankings. Captain Hazard or Aguero and bring in players with form and fixtures and let others make mistakes.

Ahhh, thank you so much! That makes perfect sense, I won't make any horrendous captain decisions this year I will just stick with the flow. So you think it's a good strategy straight swapping Ivanovic for 4.5 and Rooney for Aguero GW4?

I agree entirely - even if my strategy works, the hard bit will be quantifying how much was down to tactical genius, and how much is purely from absorbing a mass or additional info from finding this site. Honest answer likely to be 50% minimum for the latter, no matter what strategy I follow, and the bulk of the rest attributable to sheer luck.

My target is to halve last years ranking and get near top 25K - would be chuffed with that.

      Nice post.
I see two issues. The first is that people are looking at VORP, or any measure of value for that matter, assuming that the players is played every game. For attackers, this is generally valid (who will bench an 8.5m mid?), but for defenders this is usually not the case. Ivanovic will return more than, say Huth. But is Ivanovic and a benched 4.0 player better than two rotating 5.5m defenders? Probably not, though they cost the same amount. Last year, with an all-cheap defence (4.5s and 5.0s) my starting defenders averaged more than 5 ppg through the first dozen weeks. (That is about how long I maintained the spreadsheet). This is much higher than the average ppg for the defenders themselves. The magic of rotation is often not picked up by any measure of value. Having three (or four) expensive, un-rotated defenders is unlikely to have a higher ppg (per player) than a solid 5-pick-3 rotation of cheaper defenders.
This leads to the second problem. You need to have as many productive attacking slots as possible. Part of FPL is catching the big hauls. Having 6 attackers instead of 7 means one fewer possibility of a big haul, and one fewer captaincy option. You have lower odds of winning the lottery if you buy fewer tickets.
In any case, I do like to see diverse strategies used, so I wish you good luck with your 433/442. Maybe the odd week when 4 defenders have a nice fixture, but not as an every-week strategy.

      1. Dreaming of Irene
        • 10 Years

Cheers - like the lottery analogy - maybe to build on it I guess I am buying scratchcards to start with, potentially small returns but better win odds, then will be switching to the main lottery for double roll-overs later.

Ivan plus 4.0 vs same 2 x 5.5, close call, but odds improve if those 5.5s occasionally get moved to new ones when fixture blocks change so each 5.5 has both form and fixtures, whereas Ivan has to play the odd tough fixture. I guess the hard to quantify factor here is how productively you can then use the transfers you save up from by having Ivan locked in your team.

Un-rotated defender point again good, but my intention is to still rotate 4 from 5, won't be playing the 3 5.0's every week if one of my two 4.5 has better fixture as I have picked them with a 5.0 rotation pairing in mind - e.g. only 50% of Jenkinsons early fixtures I plan to start him, but happy to rotate him with Francis for first 8 weeks. Some will claim too much then on the bench that week, but its which will deliver the points each individual week, not how much they cost per point that will matter.

Every year someone thinks they've built a better mouse trap.
And, every year we see the lion's share of teams that make the Top 10k have played a 343 the majority of the game.

Then we read strategy article, posts, advice from the likes of Evs & Trigger who also advocate for the 343 as well.

Now, this isn't to say you *can't* make the Top 10k using a 433 strat. (heck, some guy made the Top10k taking triple digit pt hits last yr) but, it also doesn't seem like the easiest path either.

Mmmmmmmmmm cheese - never could resist. Tastes nicer than grass, baaaaaa.

Don't disagree with you at all tbh - the majority of the year I will play 3-4-3 (or 3-5-2 if budget 3rd striker on board.)
This strategy is just to start with when I can't afford an 8.0+ 4th mid; once I can do that I will be all over 4-3-3, Every year like most casuals I get the wrong 4.5s before GW1 as I don't know whats in the managers thinking, and then ending up doing 2 or 3 transfers to put it right.

This approach hopefully affords me the breathing space to assess which 4.5s are nailed after first 5 weeks and then move to them freeing up cash if I want. If nothing else of it works, my view is that is still like giving me a +8 or +12 boost from my previous campaigns by avoiding my usual early firefighting hits. As I lost my work league by 4 points last year I am trying to erase that factor from my game.

There is a little contradiction here & in one of the above posts 'Its actually the saving of enforced defence transfers that appeals to me - I have spent ages pondering over questions such as which of Sunderland 4.5s defs will start and the answer is we just don't know yet'.
Surely this is a case of wasting transfers on defence & possible needless hits as your looking to save cash, I presume to upgrade elsewhere.
At the risk of being pedantic, this is a flawed approach that has been 'sold' on here to the eager listeners but is proven not to work long term - yes, we've all probably used 4-3-3 in emergencies but as a strategy, a firm no.
As I've mentioned before, those going 4-3-3 should keep us posted as the season progresses.

Not sure if contradictory or not, there is a big difference between planned and enforced (looks suspiciously like -4)

My previous seasons usually would have gone something like:
Sunderland fixtures look good, fancy Matthews he is cheap, I pick him.
Wk 1...damn he's on the bench, knew I should have gone O'Shea, oh well there goes a transfer.
Wk 3 ...blast, what's Coates doing starting in place of O'Shea, knee jerk.
            Repeat

Now - cheap 4th mid frees up funds: buys hopefully secure PVA, don't waste transfer.

The strategic planned transfer - pick PVA for good fixtures, sell for Lescott at point fixtures change. If something else is more pressing hold fire and deal with that instead.
The main flaw in this as many will point out is there is bound to be more pressing issues, so still likely to have hits, but hopefully less than before.

Maybe the bit I haven't got across is its not a blueprint for the season, just my approach until wildcard, so at most, just the first quarter of the season.

Thanks for the counterpoints - its the down sides and risks I was hoping people would highlight, so plenty of things to chew over and could still flip to something different if new player movements or injuries presents a better plan pre season start, though I do feel I ought to give it a go after throwing it out there.

Happy to link my team next week so you can all lol me in a few weeks - dread to think how much entertainment that may provide when people point out how stupid I was not starting with Hazard and Ivan on top of 4-3-3

I might try 5-2-3. I looked at total points per million and midfielders are terrible value. Also you can be more assured of points with CS with quality defenders than you can with goals and assists even with quality players. You can't count with two hands the games where Hazard had a blank last season.

Wow that one will be popular on here!

I take your point re Hazard, its a big risk, but its not for the season just a small portion of it. That 2.5 invested elsewhere represents a bigger proportion of the transfer kitty now than it will in 2 months time. I am trying to rationalise if it gets placed on less risky picks elsewhere I should save 2 or 3 hits that I usually make, so cushions any of his returns. Like last year I think I will start with Fab and then hide behind the sofa until I swap them at wildcard - I have tried several ways to get him in and I am always 0.5 short and end up going back to 4.5 def dilemmas I had picked my formation to avoid.
Are you planning this as a short term strategy until wildcard like me, or for the season?
I did toy with 5-3-2 as on option as a way of affording Kun Roonpig and Haz + 2 top mids, and putting everything on the pitch and having absolute dross on the bench. The main drawback was it didn't allow the flexibility to switch to 4-4-2 when a def had poor fixture, and with no def rotation that will happen regularly. It's plus is you'd have 4 strong captain options, one of which would usually have a juicy fixture (downside being I'd go for that and then miss Kun haul on regular basis.)
Are you considering the 3rd striker to be top price or mid range?
Are you planning defensive season keepers and hope they stay injury free or something like Ivan / Kosc / switching the other 3 for fixture runs?
I was looking for flexibility of rotation and transfer for fixtures, this could be the other end of the spectrum and commiting to a fixed formation with players to play every week. It does have the attraction you could pick an 11 that would be pretty much rotation proof, so would only need to invest in 1 bench player that you'd have as fallback.

Good luck if you go for it.

        Hi Epik
Had a little play this morning to see if could make 5 at back work and pick Hazard, even for 4 or 5 weeks - now pretty sure its not one for me if I wanted Haz, Rooney and Kun in the line-up. I just can't find 5 at the back I would play each week that doesn't kill the 3rd mids budget if I select Hazard, even if playing a cheap 3rd striker. I ended up with unbalanced and inflexible line-ups, which is surprising when we are both really only actually switching one starter.

With 4 at the back I can at least have one rotation to swerve the worst fixtures and accommodate a 4.5 def pick, I would be less comfortable if he had to play each week. I plan to have 3 8.5 / 9.0 mids playing each week - not sure even Haz and Silva as a 2 would do better unless you captained the correct one every week, and I cant get near to affording both and Kun in a 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 without two mid price fwds. Maybe if you are playing without Kun you might be able to make it work but I'd 100% rather forfeit Hazard than go that way. Kudos to you if you can pull it off though.

I would be interested to know the approx. prices you have allocated to your most likely starting mid that isn't Haz and the fwds just to get an idea how you are structuring your team.

Don't really fancy a defender from a team that has Van Gaal as a manager.

Wanyama & Fletcher both offer most likely regular starts plus clean sheet extra point potential if sitting on your bench as cover.

Er, 6m - maybe a better alternative to Deeney/Wilson. Would prefer Sakho tbh.

I have absolutely no idea what to do with my last defensive spot, for a 5.5 defender. Already have Huth, Targett, Cedric and Williams. Any idea? Mertesacker maybe?

      great formatting 😀

like it all except courtois (better value with cheap keepers), targett (will be dropped after 1/2 gws), sinclair (nailed? any good? wouldnt wanna be playing him evey week), and bamford (not sure if nailed and has dreadful fixtures)

Bamford has Norwich away, then Villa at home in GW3. Amazing midfield behind him.

      Wow - excellent team.

I would be tempted to switch Bamford to a 5.5 with better fixtures for first few weeks and use the 0.5 to change Targett to Francis, to rotate with Jenkinson, then if Bamford gets confirmed regular starts promptly bring him in as Palaces fixtures improve and hopefully a 4.0 playing def has emerged.

However if they are sitting on your bench it as would seem likely its great as it stands and definitely one to bookmark for inspirate before GW1.

ye like it, maybe go mathews over oshea, attacking threat... not sure on sterling at 9 but has been tempting me more with his city preseason form...
also you not worried about darmian being nailed on with lvg comments, has looked good in preseason though...

AS pool fan i am leaning towards milner more then hendo, tadic could be option at that price...

also dont like swans fixtures for saylor, better options imo
