Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

Hi all.. I Missed the Community Shield game 🙁 but was hoping to get some feedback on the game as Chelsea and Arsenal players may make up a big portion of my team. Any valuable feedback/comments on the game would be appreciated.

    How did Hazard/Fab/Falcao look?
    Did Arsenal MF play well?

Hazard and Falcao played like last season's Falcao
Ars mid played like last season's Hazard

Haz was anonymous. Falcao had good movement but not many chances, finishing is yet to be judged. Fab was ok, nothing special.
Arsenal midfield looked quite good but Walcott was not great. Ox Chambo got the goal and looked exciting but nowhere near nailed on so not really an option yet.

I'm taking the risk. Remember last year at home to Swansea when he was an injury doubt, much like this season. He went on to score a hat trick, he should be fit for the weekend. He was supposed to play today but was ruled out this morning.
Also with Remy and Falcao being so poor Mourinho is more likely to take a risk.

Hi mate, I went to watch the game live today (lfc fan who lives in Swindon). His goal was superb http://www.thisisanfield.com/2015/08/video-christian-bentekes-superb-volley-on-his-liverpool-debut-vs-swindon/ but overall had a very quiet game, looks really short of fitness. Firminho also looked great in flashes but doubt either will start next week as looked half fit. Can was man of the match by a million miles, looked very sharp. After watching a lot of LFC's pre season, this would be my predicted team line up for Stoke:

      Mig
      Clyne Skrtel Lovren Moreno
      Lucas
      Milner. Hendon
      Ibe Lallana
      Ings

(Couniho will also not be match fit)

From todays match report in the CS game:

Theo Walcott made only three passes in the opposition's half, one of them providing Arsenal's goal.

Olivier Giroud (3) had more shots than any other Arsenal player, despite coming on as a second-half substitute.

    Freakin heck!....

For me, this is one of the hardest early FPL's in history. 2 of the 3 best players (kun/sanchez) aren't going to play key roles in the first two game weeks and another (costa) is a continued injury doubt. Add to that fact certain teams having absolutely shocking starts has made three of four squads essentially unpickable. I mean, does literally anyone have a swansea or newcastle attacker in their sides?

There is so much talk of early wild cards, not because of the new system, but because it's currently impossible to pick a best eleven from the players available.

One thing I will say, is that I think it will be interesting watching people make the call between the early season flyers (whoever they maybe) and the big city assets and the like when the fixtures turn. I look at my team and think yeah I could do Rooney and Sterling for Kun and a 6m easy if I save a transfer. But if Rooney scores five in three I'm clearly not going to do that am I?

    I'm just rambling now...

First time caller, long time listener.

Would appreciate an RMT on this little lot. It's Hazard-less till Chelsea are playing better, and the expensive midfield is so I've got options to bring him and/or Aguerro when the season's settled down.

    Cech
    Shaw - Cahill - Cedric
    Silva - Ozil - Coutinho - Eriksen - Oscar
    Rooney - Defoe

    Subs: Huth, S Taylor, Wilson

Any major concerns apart from a possible lack of firepower?? (which I'll sort out later when everything has settled down a bit: i.e. Benteke / Aguerro / Costa back and firing)

Thanks. I guess there's the option to downgrade to Ritchie and save 2 mill for an Aguerro upgrade. Was wondering whether Eriksen was worth the 8.5 too, gone for a set-piece theme tho

Not a fan of Oscar and Coutinho... but maybe they could work out.
Without Hazard you should have another quality striker to pair with Rooney

Too much money in defence and not enough in attack, quality teams generally don't pick up many more clean sheets than average teams on general

        • 14 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

        Thanks fellas.

Good points re: Coutinho and expensive defence.

I'll probably downgrade Coutinho for sure. Fancy taking a punt on Oscar and Cahill as Chelsea picks mainly as a differential, and I'm convinced Defoe will have bang for buck. Will probs stick Benteke in, but don't fancy Pelle and not a lot else around that price range.

        Thanks for the advice anyways

Not sure about: Cahill, Eriksen, Oscar, Defoe

      - Upgrade Cahill to Ivanovic
      - Change Oscar to a 7.0 mid (Hendo, Milner)
      - Change Eriksen to another 8.5 mid (Ramsey, Cazorla, YYT, Mata)
      - Upgrade Defoe to Sakho

    Lost on bottom...
    First RMT of the season.
With so many great midfield options I will go for a 3-5-2

    Pantillimon (Henessey)
Darmian - Bellerin - Gomez (Cedric - Target)
    Sterling - Walcott - Depay - Özil - Fabregas
    Sakho - Pellé (Ighalo)

3.0m in the bank for upgrades

I will maybe switch Pellé to Rooney before I finalise the team.

    What is your verdict?

Rarely, of course. I was considering having a 4m non playing keeper, but feel I'd just be trying to scrape 0.5m together for the sake of it.

If Cech doesn't play for whatever reason, its good to have an actual starting goalkeeper as backup.

Doos, how do you see us lining up next week against the Gunners. Seems that Oxford may play CDM if Obiang is not fit.

It remains entirely possible. He has had a brilliant pre-Season. I have a spreadsheet.

Little love for Stekelenburg around ? I'm thinking he's more likey to get CS points than Ruddy, Butland or Schmeichel. More of a wash between him and Panti, though - clean sheets vs save points.

If he were 4.5 it would be a no-brainer. But he's not.

Fair enough - but last season most would choose a 5.0 So'ton defender over a 4.5 Norwich, Leicester or Stoke defender.

Defenders are a different story. The variance in scoring for goalkeepers is miserable, and it's almost never worth spending more than the minimum.

Why wouldn't Walcott start for Arsenal? He got an assist today.
If anything Chamberlin or Coquelin will get dropped to make room for Giroud.

Arsenal has a small flurry of nice passing in each giroud flubbed some chances, a whole lot of nothing really

His assist was a simple pass and he was rubbish as a striker.

Giroud was certainly more threatening out there....in far fewer minutes.

Passes found giroud in a nice spell for arsenal, he didn't really do anything at all

True, he didn't finish. Seemed to be in right spot at right time for chances more often. Not sure if that is a valid measure, but it was there.

He created space with his run and held the ball up well. His positional play was excellent. Far better than Walcott. Not even close

His assist was just a simple pass; the Ox did everything else. Chamberlin actually got the goal, and why would you put in a striker for a holding midfielder?

Coquelin is a DM, the team looks a lot worse without him. It is not a fair comparison.
Ox Chambo got the goal and was probably the most threatening player on the pitch and Walcott only got the assists because Ox scored out of nowhere.
I am not saying that Ox will play although I think he should.

Walcott was rubbish at ST today but so was Giroud. And he did really well there at the end of last season.

The lineup today seems likes the one he'll start with.

          hmmm

I can get him in but

          a) It eats up my Aguero fund (no idea where I;d find the cash)
          b) I'm either gonna have to start with him and ditch Sakho or Wilson or plan a transfer GW2
