Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

I'm going to wildcard after gw4 unless I get absolutely brilliant start.

Would you rather have Sinclair to rotate with Sakho or playing 4.5 def instead of Targett?

Decent enough. Think I'd take a 5.5 (Bellerin, Mert, Darmian) and Targett over a 5 and a 3rd 4.5, especially if WCing early.

    Mert Aspi Huth (Francis O'shea)

    Walcott Mata Hazard Ritchie (Wanyama)

    Kane Rooney Sahko (0.0mil ITB)

OK. I guess a final RMT before the start. Any input apriciated:

    Courtois (Schwarzer)

Mert - Kolarov - Darmian - Williams (Huth)

Fab - Sterling - Ozil - Milner (Chadli)

    Rooney - Pelle (Defoe)

      Final? Yeah right!
I vaguely remember news that darmian might sit as a reserve.
Epic midfield; seems lile you might be playing 3-5-2 quite a lot

Yeah i know, i know. Probably gonna change 10 of players around till friday. 🙂
Yes i am thinking of going for 3-5-2 when the fixtures are right, even 4-5-1 sometimes. Depends a lot on the fixtures. Also with such midfield i can easly downgrade Milner or Chadli for Sanchez or Hazard if needed.

Darmian played every game 90 minutes in pre-season so far. Valencia was used everywhere else but in right back, so i think LVG was talking rubbish when he said Valencia is first choice. And how could he be. It is not his primary position, Darmian on the other hand is in my opinion one of best right backs in Europe at the moment. So a no brainer for me.

Sorry; meant to comment before posting!
I've gone for a fairly heavy midfield but thunk i could reorgajise funds for the return of aguero, so should be mamageable with a double transfer or hit. I don't want yo start the season with spare change in the bank, when i could be missing out on big points and price changes.

Do i need to invest more in that front line or defence? Will benteke and lamberr start?

Sinclair makes an interesting choice for 5th MID at 5m. There's a reasonable chance that he will be a regular starter and very good value, in which case he will become your 4th MID. It should become clear in the first few GWs whether this is going to happen. That makes him an interesting part of the equation to get Aguero in for GW4. It could make sense to downgrade a MID all the way to Wanyama to free up funds to get Aguero, thereby promoting Sinclair to 4th MID. If not, then you've spent an extra 0.5 on your 5th MID - not the end of the world.

      Well, this is different.

Cabaye Schneiderlin, Jags, Richardson, Brady; I'm not massive fans of.

And the attack, I like the punt on Bamford, I'd just be worried about his game time.

Cabaye and schneiderlin I'm a fan of. Brady was just someone i could manage with the money i had left. Do i need to make changes? This team sure feels very tricky.

I feel like you spent too much on defense. Jagielka is not a good idea I think.

Mert and Clyne that I can think of right now. Also I think there are better 4.5s than Richardson 🙂

I'm noticing not many teams with Silva, whys that?

    Butland

    Ivanovic Clyne Cédric

    Hazard Ritchie Silva Cazorla

    Deeney Rooney Benteke

    Hennessey, Huth, Wanyama, Francis

    Thoughts?

Personally i prefer sterling over silva. Atleast in the beginning. Your team is good to go.

Thanks. I'll see how Silva goes in the first few weeks. I could easily downgrade Silva and upgrade to Aguero when he is ready.

Sterling more goal threat with that pace... atleast till aguero is back...

Exactly. Sterling will play more of a striker role till aguero is fit enough

      Good question.
It's partly to do with his price - it's difficult to own both Hazard and Silva leaving enough cash for the rest of the team. Most want Hazard so Silva has to go. Also there's concern that Sterling will adversely affect Silva's output (and vice versa) - I'm not so worried about that personally, and I think he will be a great pick this year.

Sterling is going to be better value for price and opening fixtures.

Hi guys, quick question for members. I've just joined up, and wanted to know if the projections are updated throughout the pre season... also how much faith do you all put in the numbers it produces?

Nothing at all. Rarely use Rmt tool.

Player stats, Doosra's and Wakey's stats tables and season ticker are what I'm paying for.

    Schmeichel
    PvA Francis Targett

I've not been on here over the weekend, but I guess the Walcott wagon is full swing, and mass exodus of Giroud, and Costa?

Anything else important that everyone is doing?

If anything, Walcott did him self no favours. I didn't see anything yesterday that would make me want to pick him over Cazorla, Ozil.

      Regardless of the assist

Was one of those goals where should t even be called an assist though. 5 yard lateral ball followed by individual brilliance

One quiet game against the league champions is nothing to worry about, it's West Ham next at the Emirates, Walcott (c) is still looking like a great shout

Almost certain he'll start, but Ox has certainly stakes his claim to start on the right wing

Yesterday suggested Walcott is competing with Giroud for the striker spot. Unless Walcott is also considered as a winger, his time will be limited. He's likely to be rotated in any event.

Well I thought this all along, He's either going to rotate with Sanchez - in which case Sanchez starts 9/10 times, or he rotates with Giroud and that'd be 50/50 I guess.

But everyone seems to think he's FPL gold.

On the contrary, people are concerned about Walcotts security of starts.

Quite the opposite. Walcott looking impotent and Giroud coming on and doing more in 2mins has people concerned about Walcotts inevitable rotation

Mass exodus of Walcott too, actually.

That's strange, the last few weeks I've seen a lot of people saying how Walcott is going start up front, and other people saying he won't, and now he actually gets picked over Giroud, and people are getting rid of him?

      Playing a 442?

      It's between

      Lambert
      Ade
      Sakho
      Berahino
      Defoe

For me, the stand out is Sakho. But I wouldn't be surprised if any of the above got off to a good start.
