Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

But Clyne seems to be attacking a lot more, and the CBs are not nailed on, so there's a lot of doubt surrounding them atm.

The rest of the defense is pretty much the same? Lovren/Sakho were there last season too. As far as Clyne goes, can't see it being a bad thing for Liverpool. He's only an upgrade on their right back last season if anything

Yes, pretty much the same. But BR himself doesn't seem to know his CB pairing yet.

For sure, Clyne is an upgrade, offensively. And he's an established defender too, just wondering if they might concede a few more goals with his attacking intent.

Hmmm thanks for your input. I feel Costa will be fine, just resting him & didn't want to risk him. I feel he will surpass his great stats from last season also.

Considering the funds for my defence I feel I can't really choose better. Joe Gomez I think will start after BR's comments & the rest are strong defenders.

My only doubts really are over Sinclair & Ibe but I think they are great punts.

This was well received last night and, aside from maybe a Sunderland defender change and an Arsenal midfielder change, I'm pretty settled on it, assuming no injury news etc:

    Rutland
    Azpi Mert Huth Coates Francis
    Hazard Sterling Ramsey Mané 4.5
    Rooney Benteke Wilson

    Thoughts?

Your third striker choice, Wilson. Any reason you went Wilson over Deeney?

      I don't know too much about any of the promoted sides this year, so quickly looking at wiki;

Deeney looks to have the most experience in the Championship, 205 appearances and 77 goals. His last four seasons he's scored double figures, and in particular his last 3 seasons have been near enough 20+.

Wilson, looks to have come into the Championship last year, 45 apps with 20 goals. Pretty impressive stats, but was it a one season wonder?

Does Deeney's experience mean he could stand a better chance in the PL?

Interested really. I don't know too much about either of them.

I went with Wilson on the basis that he has the better opening fixtures in a more creative and stable side. Watford's influx of options is somewhat off putting, as I'm slightly dubious as to how they'll all gel. Conversely, Eddie Howe has gone for a few important signings, without disrupting the core of his squad. Wilson's 23 and has developed well in the last few years, coming from Coventry in L1. He has plenty of room for further improvement. 🙂

That said, Deeney's also a sound pick, imo. Pens and a great record, as you point out. I just favour Wilson at the moment, until the Watford situation is clearer.

Or even Sakho + Milner/Hendo for LFC cover + Pelle for Soton cover instead of Wilson + Mane + Tekkers?

I think Coates. O'Shea has apparently been a disaster in pre-season, so I think we'll see him being phased out shortly. My feeling is Dick will start with the partnership that kept us up at the end of last season, and then bring Kaboul in for JOS as soon as he has an excuse.

Liking him a lot, when I made my first draft it was between him and Sakho. I think it's close between them, but Gomis was flagged at the time. What's the latest on his fitness and pre-season?

He started in the last friendly indicating it was a very minor injury. I also think it comes down Sakho vs Gomis. It's a tough call.

Cool. For me Sakho has played well for longer than Gomis, so that's still pushing me in the way of Sakho.

On the other hand, new manager, who knows what'll happen.

          Tough call indeed.

Agree with the first points - he does fluff a lot of chances. However, he's nailed on, no competition for his role, and Ayew added to Siggy could provide better service. He's one to watch, for me.

Been toying about with my team on the projections table. The moneyball route. Which of these would you choose:

    A. Courtois, Mertesacker, Rooney; or
    B. Panti, Ivanovic and Kane.

B is projected to get 6 pts more over the first 6 GWs (obviously transfers etc would need to be taken into consideration) . But my gut says A (plus it's easier to get Aguero).

Not too keen on capping Haz after yesterday, new draft:

    Ruddy/Rudd
Azpi Kosc Cedric Coates(any 4.5 really) Saylor
    Sterling Fabs Ozil Walcott Depay
    Kane Pelle Grabban

a bit short on cap options but this is where the value is this year - between 8-9 in attack

      Cech a great choice.
Prob gone too heavy on the backline. Need to bring in a rotational cheaper backline.
Schneiderlin is a defensive mid. Doesn't look likely to score weekly and may be rotated with Schwein/Carrick. Brady has been playing defence.
Bamford has tough fixtures but can be a good get if he ousts the other strikers, Wickham also expected to join Palace.

You can't have the best of everything. If that was the case everyone would have outstanding teams. You need to give up something to gain something. In this case your midfield looks very strong as does mine but I have a weaker forward line consisting of Rooney / Pelle / Jerome. You have a strong forward line also. Try to change 1 midfield for a cheaper type, maybe one from a promoted team and do the same with the forward. You may not play them every week but when you need to they will be there to hopefully score you some points. Most people try and go for budget keepers that will score save points. My keepers = 9MIL in total. Most teams have a backline that accumulates between 24 - 28MIL. Bamford has tough run straight up and is competing with other forwards. As I mentioned earlier Wickham has been picked up by Palace which presents another option for Bamford to compete against. Good luck with your team Jayblue

    Ruddy (Butland)
Cedric Mertesacker Ivanovic (Ward, S Taylor)
    Hazard Sterling Henderson Ritchie (Wanyama)
    Rooney Pelle Benteke

    Any suggestions?

      Pretty solid.

Maybe, Ivan > Azpi and upgrade Ritchie

      Have you saved money?
      Seems quite light considering.

Doesn't particularly stand out to me, sorry.

I liket it actually. Are you planning to rotate Payet and Wilson?

      Lol at final.

Needs stronger FWDs I reckon. There aren't enough standout captain picks imo: I'd only be happy about captaining Haz at home.

Seems to me that you've gone for mid-range picks throughout the squad: I reckon you're better with some expensive, some mid, some cheap.

Yeah, I was thinking that, you think its worth getting rid of Payet for a cheap and upgrading a striker to Rooney?

Any of you guys in a money league this season ?

If so, how much is at stake ?

    Just out of curiosity

In a money league with 200 others. $100 in each. Lots of prizes but (a winner takes all would be mental), including a few cup competitions, manager of the month, and a final leaderboard.

That sounds like a lot of fun! All the best for your season.

I'm on Butland/Ruddy atm, but not really sold on either. Tempted to go with Cech, but looks like Kosc may need to get in, so that's enough Arsenal defensive cover. So looking at following alternative GK :
    choices:

    a) Stekelenburg
    b) Fabianski
    c) Schmeichel
    d) Pantilimon

Bit surprised of the low interest in Stekelenburg, surely a good alternative considering Southampton's defensive record? Should expect more clean sheets than most teams.

Fabianski, IMO. Swansea are excellent defenders at home. He's an established goalkeeper, gets a fair few save points away too.

Thanks, Swansea defense not the worst I guess. But not the best fixtures for first few GW's.

So with the ox's display yesterday, I'm tempted to double up with him and caz in midfield. It'd give me

    Butland speroni
    Azpi Williams huth ward o'shea
    Hazard sterling caz ox milner
    Rooney Benteke Wilson

    What do you reckon?

    A) Hazard and Milner
    B) Fab and Sterling

Aguero will come in GW4 for Rooney with a downgrade elsewhere.

    What do you think folks?

Have the same question. Don't wheter to do A or B. I just can't not have hazard.

Yeah, I've gone back and forth at least 3 times already!
Based on how they started last year, if that happens again, Haz isn't worth the 2.5 over Fab.

I'm actually considering Giroud now. I think he'll play. But if he does that means one of Walcott/Ox/Ramsey gets dropped. Obviously that would be Ox normally but I think after today's goal he deserves to continue for a while

    Thoughts?

Staying away from Arsenal attack altogether after last night, nobody stands out for me and that usually means the risk of picking wrong is high.

I had Giroud and Costa in my team before yesterday. I'm starting to think its just not worth the risk of having either of them.

The best team will be fielded and that won't include Ox. Giroud may start over Walcott, subbed in the 60th.
