Deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom penned a season-long loan deal with Norwich City last week. Talking to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old insisted that’s he’s in prime shape for a Premier League start:

“I spoke to the manager, and he’s told me what he wants from myself and the team collectively. It’s going to be good and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve maintained a high fitness level because I’ve been on tour with Liverpool, so I’m coming here fit and ready to go. I’m hoping to help the team by contributing on and off the pitch.”

The History

Born in Leeds, Wisdom started out at Bradford City’s youth academy, before making the switch to Liverpool at the age of 14. Having worked his way up the ranks, Wisdom established himself as a regular starter for the Reds’ reserve team at centre-back.

The installation of Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat led to Wisdom’s promotion to the first team. After earning his senior debut during Liverpool’s 5-2 demolition of Norwich in September 2012, he went on to notch a further 11 starts at right-back that term, serving up one assist in the process.

A lack of starting opportunities on Merseyside prompted Wisdom to spend the 2013/14 season on loan to Championship outfit Derby County. Upon his switch to the Rams in October, he started and finished every league encounter, bagging three assists across 33 outings.

Wisdom teamed up with West Bromwich Albion for the 2014/15 Premier League season, where he enjoyed the security of starts under Alan Irvine, chalking up one assist in 18 appearances. Irvine’s sacking and the subsequent hiring of Tony Pulis engendered a reduction in his playing time, with Wisdom mustering just three more starts that term.

On the international stage, Wisdom has turned out a total of 37 times at youth level, from England U16 to 21, and found the net on three occasions.

The Prospects

Wisdom spent the last year of his youth spell at Liverpool operating at centre-back but has since exclusively been fielded in the right-back berth. Alex Neil’s comments regarding Wisdom’s arrival at Carrow Road suggest he favours him in the latter role:

“I’m delighted as Andre fits our profile in terms of getting hungry players in who want to make their way in the game. He’s also had Premier League experience with a few different clubs, so we’re happy to get it over the line. It will add to the competition for places as he’s a flexible player. In the past he’s played centre-back and right-back. Having added competition to the left-hand side with Robbie Brady, it was important to add something to the right side as well.”

Indeed, Wisdom’s first run-out for the Norfolk club was at right-back: he clocked 30 minutes during a pre-season debut against Brentford at the weekend, emerging from the bench to tee up Cameron Jerome for an emphatic winner.

Wisdom looks set to challenge Steven Whittaker for starts at right-back, with Russell Martin and Sebastien Bassong forming Neil’s first-choice centre-back pairing. With no certainty that Norwich’s latest arrival will be handed a run at the start of the season, few Fantasy managers will be tempted to snap up the 4.5-priced defender from the off.

Across his 2080 minutes of pitch time last season, Wisdom fashioned just three (off-target) attempts at goal, while Whittaker and Martin both served up two goals apiece, albeit in the Championship. Furthermore, Wisdom executed a paltry nine key passes for his team-mates, bagging one assist along the way. Whittaker (five), Martin (five) and Olsson (six) all surpassed that assist haul, with the former ranking fourth for key passes (38) among Norwich’s full roster.

Indeed, with just two assists in 38 appearances in the Premier League to his name, Wisdom offers little in the way of attacking potential. Even if he nails down a starting berth, then, his lack of impact in the final third suggests he may have to rely on clean sheets for points but with the changes to the BPS scoring system favouring the similarly-priced John Ruddy between the sticks, Wisdom’s appeal looks limited. Indeed, given that there are options at the likes of Sunderland and Leicester at the same cost, Norwich’s defenders may struggle to justify any level of investment.

Nonetheless, those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Canaries backline in light of their decent early schedule (CRY, sun, STO, sou, BOU, liv) might be inclined to source a budget rotation partner to exploit their kind home fixtures. On that note, Stoke City alternate well with the Canaries, furnishing us with just five match-ups against last term’s top-six sides leading into the New Year. With the schedule smiling kindly, it’s little wonder that many on the site are eyeing up a Ruddy/Jack Butland cut-price pairing between the posts at a cost of just 9.0, with the prospect of save points, at the least, looking more enticing.

A from the start until it's clear when Aguero is back.

If Aguero was fit from the start, then definitely B.

I will be using a new tactic. I am going to field a team specifically for GW1 and use the 'bench boost' chip therefore all my 15 players will be playable. The following week I am obviously going to Wildcard. I'll know lineups, early form...etc. therefore I think this is a good and punty idea.

    The team:
Schmeichal | Howard ------- I expect clean sheets from both 🙂
Azpi | Kosc | Coleman | Kolarov | Huth ------- Yes, expensive but deadly
Hazard | Oscar (C) | Ozil | Ramsey | Young ------- Very punty, Young nailed and only 6m
Vardy | Wilson | Lukaku ------- I think all these strikers will perform GW1. Cheap but great.

I will downgrade the defence (especially Coleman and Kosc) if necessary to upgrade in another area. I'm fairly happy with this team. Oscar scored twice last time out against the Swans and I feel he is nailed to start. Fabregas to drop back with Matic after Ramires disappointing and attacking performance.
Thoughts and changes I should do? Thanks

Just having a bit of fun 🙂

And I will be using the Triple Captain chip in a DGW definitely. I don't feel this chip is necessary then because I'll be fielding those players in the starting 11 (ones who have a DGW)

You could potentially have 15 players twice (30) with good planning/WC

Twice as good as 15 players in fact.

          Save it!

            Hmmm

That is true however a DGW normally occurs for a maximum of 4 teams in a single game week. As we can only get 3 players from each team; that'll be 12 players. I can field 11 which will be profitable. And double game weeks occur later in the season so I'll have my other wildcard then

The difference is you can play your 11 dgw players and still have big single week players like hazard or aguero. Remember the dilemmas of not knowing who to start, dgw cheapie vs sgw big hitter?

Saying that, you might be right that it is more useful to use triple captain in a dgw

I think you will regret using a chip too early. Especially when bench boost will be so powerful on a double game week where you could get between 10 and 15 DWG players.

Also, not sure I'd want to wildcard after GW 1. Very punty and could get you an early lead however, I doubt this lead would last.

Sorry for late reply (only just saw my email notifying me!)

He is in my team as a 5th mid. I wouldn't read too much into his hat trick at the weekend BUT he has had a good pre season, is playing as a sort of inside forward and Villa are way more attacking under Sherwood. I reckon he will get plenty of game time, particularly at the start of the season so is a decent pick. Our fixtures aren't terrible either.

Following on from my UFPL post, highlighting how good the trio of Schmeichel, Schwarzer & Mignolet rotate, here are the fixtures:

    SUN - sto
    whm - BOU
    TOT - ars
    WHM
    mun - AVL
    sto - NOR
    AVL
    nor - eve
    tot
    CPL - SOT
    wba
    WAT - CPL
    new
    MUN - SWA

10 out of 14 weeks have at least 1 home game in them - with fairly easy away games.

Thoughts? Long but think Ill be settled on this?

    Ruddy/Butland

    Mertesacker/Cedric/Gomez/Francis/Coates

    Hazard/Cazorla/Ozil/Ritchie/4.5

    Rooney/Kane/Pelle

    Fell that it helps to explain thinking behind decisions;

    GKs: cheap and rotate well

Def: seemingly more solid teams defensively (ie southampton last year and sunderland under advocaat), little light but rotate well and Gomez on the bench week 1 to see if hes playing which looks likely

Mids: hazard speaks for itself really, double arsenal mids both on set pieces and think ozil will score bigger this year, ritchie as a punt at 6 reckon he could be like lallana at southampton that one year

Fwds: All the focal point of the attack for their teams, good fixtures

I think Gomez is a wonderful talent and I've enjoyed seeing such composure in a young man. Real maturity and I think he'll play a role this year.

That said I don't think the rotation risk is worth accepting when Liverpool have an iffy defensive record and there and nailed 4.5 in teams offerering comparable defensive competency.

Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom is having a medical at Hull ahead of signing on loan. Steve Bruce is also hoping to finalise the £3.5m signing of Moses Odubajo.

    Chips:

Im comfortable with how/when to apply the triple captain and bench points but not sure when to use the all out attack. Especially as I intend to stick to a 343, using a 4.5 as fifth midfielder and I cant see Fletch doing me too well from an attacking perspective!

    What do you guys think?

I would just not think about the all out attack chip too much. Plan to just use it as an alternative to making a transfer if i've got injuries/suspensions in defence. There's no guarantee your 5th mid will outscore you're 3rd def in any gameweek, regardless of whether he costs more than 4.5

Having a cheap 5th mid certainly lessens it's value, probably best when you have bad fixtures/injuries to your defence

I would appreciate some advice on the best options to complete my Team:-

    Butland / Ruddy
    Kosc / Cedric / Huth / Targett / Kaboul
    Fabs / Ozil / Sterling / Mane / X
    Rooney / Benteke / X

2.0 in the bank for Aguero (Planning Rooney and Sterling to Aguero & Man U Mid. Depay / Mata / Pedro)

Going for a rotation pair so switching between 3-5-2 & 3-4-3

    A) Richie & Deeney
    B) Sinclair & Lambert / Berahino
    C) Aarons & Defoe
    D) Van Ginkel & Bamford

    Many thanks

A for me, Ritchie and Deeney rotate well so you will always have a positive fixture for your 5th mid/3rd forward.

Now that Speroni is injured do you think that Hennesey will take his place and hence been a good 4m GK benchwarmer whilst my main keeper is Courtois
