Deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom penned a season-long loan deal with Norwich City last week. Talking to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old insisted that’s he’s in prime shape for a Premier League start:

“I spoke to the manager, and he’s told me what he wants from myself and the team collectively. It’s going to be good and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve maintained a high fitness level because I’ve been on tour with Liverpool, so I’m coming here fit and ready to go. I’m hoping to help the team by contributing on and off the pitch.”

The History

Born in Leeds, Wisdom started out at Bradford City’s youth academy, before making the switch to Liverpool at the age of 14. Having worked his way up the ranks, Wisdom established himself as a regular starter for the Reds’ reserve team at centre-back.

The installation of Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat led to Wisdom’s promotion to the first team. After earning his senior debut during Liverpool’s 5-2 demolition of Norwich in September 2012, he went on to notch a further 11 starts at right-back that term, serving up one assist in the process.

A lack of starting opportunities on Merseyside prompted Wisdom to spend the 2013/14 season on loan to Championship outfit Derby County. Upon his switch to the Rams in October, he started and finished every league encounter, bagging three assists across 33 outings.

Wisdom teamed up with West Bromwich Albion for the 2014/15 Premier League season, where he enjoyed the security of starts under Alan Irvine, chalking up one assist in 18 appearances. Irvine’s sacking and the subsequent hiring of Tony Pulis engendered a reduction in his playing time, with Wisdom mustering just three more starts that term.

On the international stage, Wisdom has turned out a total of 37 times at youth level, from England U16 to 21, and found the net on three occasions.

The Prospects

Wisdom spent the last year of his youth spell at Liverpool operating at centre-back but has since exclusively been fielded in the right-back berth. Alex Neil’s comments regarding Wisdom’s arrival at Carrow Road suggest he favours him in the latter role:

“I’m delighted as Andre fits our profile in terms of getting hungry players in who want to make their way in the game. He’s also had Premier League experience with a few different clubs, so we’re happy to get it over the line. It will add to the competition for places as he’s a flexible player. In the past he’s played centre-back and right-back. Having added competition to the left-hand side with Robbie Brady, it was important to add something to the right side as well.”

Indeed, Wisdom’s first run-out for the Norfolk club was at right-back: he clocked 30 minutes during a pre-season debut against Brentford at the weekend, emerging from the bench to tee up Cameron Jerome for an emphatic winner.

Wisdom looks set to challenge Steven Whittaker for starts at right-back, with Russell Martin and Sebastien Bassong forming Neil’s first-choice centre-back pairing. With no certainty that Norwich’s latest arrival will be handed a run at the start of the season, few Fantasy managers will be tempted to snap up the 4.5-priced defender from the off.

Across his 2080 minutes of pitch time last season, Wisdom fashioned just three (off-target) attempts at goal, while Whittaker and Martin both served up two goals apiece, albeit in the Championship. Furthermore, Wisdom executed a paltry nine key passes for his team-mates, bagging one assist along the way. Whittaker (five), Martin (five) and Olsson (six) all surpassed that assist haul, with the former ranking fourth for key passes (38) among Norwich’s full roster.

Indeed, with just two assists in 38 appearances in the Premier League to his name, Wisdom offers little in the way of attacking potential. Even if he nails down a starting berth, then, his lack of impact in the final third suggests he may have to rely on clean sheets for points but with the changes to the BPS scoring system favouring the similarly-priced John Ruddy between the sticks, Wisdom’s appeal looks limited. Indeed, given that there are options at the likes of Sunderland and Leicester at the same cost, Norwich’s defenders may struggle to justify any level of investment.

Nonetheless, those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Canaries backline in light of their decent early schedule (CRY, sun, STO, sou, BOU, liv) might be inclined to source a budget rotation partner to exploit their kind home fixtures. On that note, Stoke City alternate well with the Canaries, furnishing us with just five match-ups against last term’s top-six sides leading into the New Year. With the schedule smiling kindly, it’s little wonder that many on the site are eyeing up a Ruddy/Jack Butland cut-price pairing between the posts at a cost of just 9.0, with the prospect of save points, at the least, looking more enticing.

Tough one - 50:50. I'd lean towards Coates as he's more likely to start.

Coates....Sunderland have better fixtures and a more solid team overall, especially if we add M'Villa into our midfield to play alongside cattermole.

By the end of the week we could put out the following team:

          Pants
          Jones Coates O'Shea/Kaboul PVA
          Cattermole M'Villa Fer
          Johnson Defoe Lens

I'd say that's a lot more attacking than last season when we had no natural width and less quality in midfield.

With our fixtures Lens is as good as any in that price range for an early season punt.

That's a really decent first XI!
Last season there was a lack of inspiration in the attack, I think, definitly when Johnson had his problems. With this team they could do a lot better in the league. Fer would also be a nice add; Always looking for attacking solutions and has an eye for the goal.
            Thanks!

Yeah I think the idea will be to play cattermole and m'villa as the midfield generals giving Fer a licence to get forward a lot and support defoe. Something we've lacked in recent season.

M'villa was courted by liverpool and arsenal few seasons back but has lost his way a little. If he gets back to his best, he could be an amazing signing for us. He's classed as a defensive mid but his passing stats are quality.

    Ruddy | Rudd
    Azpilicueta | Mertesacker | Cédric | Huth | Baker

I don't mind just keeping hold of Baker, even if he won't play as he's 4.0. Naturally, I could upgrade Mert to Kosc.

Really not sure of who I'd upgrade Hendo to other than Mané but would then have to get rid of one other So'ton player?

Was researching Abdi. I like this quote from a certain Mr HornPete.

You're going to need Pudil, Behrami and Forestieri, Behrami get goals, and plenty of them, he's never been red carded for us and only picked up a handful of yellows in his entire Watford career. Pudil is Mr Assist, got a wixked cross on him, Forestieri is our new penalty taker and free kick specialist. Likely to play given injuries to Abdi and Jurado and Berghuis.

They will probably improve as the season progresses but you are spot on, the feeling I get is a jumbled fuddle at present. Think Everton will crush them tbh.

After a few hours of tinkering i'm pretty happy with this lot atm:

    Pants Hennessy
    Azpi Kosc Cedric Prodl Francis
    Fabregas Cazorla Depay Chadli Fletcher
    Aguero Pelle Sakho

I'd appreciate any feedback on this

Going with Aguero for GW1, could work out well. I am tempted to try and do the same, but holding out for now. I like your squad, good to go. Please let me know what you think of mine below.

    Am I good to go?

    Butland
    Azpi Cedric Jenks Francis O'Shea
    Haz Walcott Sterling Chadli Wanyama
    Rooney Pelle Sakho

    Defense
I decided to go with Cedric/Jenks in the back opposed to Kosc because I think 3 x 4.5 defenders is too difficult. Jenks/Francis rotate well together, and their opening fixtures are decent. WHU does have some very difficult matches, but they are sandwiched in between great Home fixtures.

    Midfield
Decided to go with Walcott Sterling because it makes it very easy for me to downgrade if one or both aren't performing. I know Wally isn't going to get 90.

    Forwards
Pretty standard here. Will be looking to do Roo -> Aguero for GW4. Not entirely sure how that will be done yet, possibly Haz -> Fab. Otherwise it could be to downgrade Walcott/Sterling, or worst case WC.

    Is this too defence heavy?!

    Ruddy

    Rooney Sakho Benteke

    Hennessey Huth OShea Fletcher

It's a good team. Hard to say if it's too much. You could do Ivan -> Azpi. Will be difficult for you to get in Aguero without WC.

I wasn't sure a couple of weeks ago but now I'm pretty certain. He was immense end of last season, has started our final two pre season games and advocaat seems to love him. He's my pick of the £4.5m Sun defs.

O'shea might start against Leicester as talk is that Kaboul might not be fully fit, but the fans and I think advocaat are aiming for a first choice partnership of Coates & Kaboul.

With the multi million pound training facilities available for Manchester City, Aguero does not need to play a game to get match fit.

He is probably on his little anti-gravity treadmill as I type.

Hi all, back after a summer break, thoughts on my first draft team?

      Ruddy/Rudd
      Ivan/Mert/Fuchs/Ward/STaylor
      Haz/Theo/Milner/Sterling/Wanyama
      Tekkers/Kane/Berahino

Think of going Kane->Rooney and Berahino-> sakho?
