634x258 Scout Picks

As Mark mentioned yesterday, the new tweaks to our Scout Picks selection process means that every Tuesday, we’ll be rolling out a squad of players that encompass many of the ongoing debates behind the scenes. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as each week progresses.

For Gameweek 1, though, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Leicester’s home clash with Sunderland brings both Kasper Schmeichel and Costel Pantilimon onto our radar. The Foxes racked up five clean sheets in their last seven in 2014/15 and with new manager Claudio Ranieri keeping faith in a 3-4-1-2 set-up, they’ll be hoping for continuity against a Black Cats side that scored just 15 times on their travels last term. Pantilimon’s average of 4.4 points per appearance looks set to be boosted further by the changes to the BPS which reward saves, whilst Sunderland’s record on the road last year (six clean sheets, as opposed to five at home) indicates they can shut up shop away from the Stadium of Light. Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc is another name being bandied about, given that visitors Villa scored 13 away goals over 2014/15 – fewer than any other side.

Defenders

We have dilemmas in the Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton defences ahead of their home clashes. Laurent Koscielny is pricier than Hector Bellerin (6.0 to 5.5) and should benefit from the change to the BPS rules on Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions, though Bellerin seems to have edged ahead of Mathieu Debuchy for the right-back berth and surely did enough against Chelsea to maintain his role for the visit of West Ham on Sunday.

Branislav Ivanovic’s attacking potential may well bring him into the Picks ahead of team-mate Cesar Azplicueta, though the latter’s price of 6.0, compared to the Serbian’s 7.0, obviously helps free up cash for further up the field.

Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman entertain Watford at Goodison before the schedule turns against Everton. Jagielka remains cheaper than the right-back, at 5.5 to 6.0, and, like Koscielny, will be favoured by the BPS change, though Coleman’s raids down the right will surely trouble the Hornets.

Simon Francis and Leandro Bacuna also come into contention ahead of Bournemouth’s home encounter with Villa. At 4.5, Francis produced more key passes than any defender in the Championship last year, whilst Bacuna (5.0) has been stationed on the right of midfield over the pre-season, potentially affording us an out-of-position option at the back.

Midfielders

In the centre of the park, a number of premium assets are jostling for our attention. For Arsenal, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil are the chief protagonists. Walcott’s start up front in the Community Shield suggests he’s edged ahead of Olivier Giroud for the lone striker role, though his withdrawal on 66 minutes at Wembley is a worry. Ozil, meanwhile, was arguably the most in-form Arsenal player over the summer and looks nailed on, regardless.

Eden Hazard – leader of this week’s Captain Poll – looks the safest route into Chelsea’s attack, with concerns once again hovering over Diego Costa’s hamstring. City duo Raheem Sterling and David Silva have both shone in pre-season and with doubts over Sergio Aguero’s availability, the City midfield may be the best option here. Southampton’s Sadio Mane was second only to Alexis Sanchez for minutes per goal amongst midfielders last year and could easily run riot against Newcastle’s dodgy defence on Sunday.

Further down the price bracket, Matt Ritchie (15 goals, 17 assists last year) faces a Villa side that conceded more than two goals per match under Tim Sherwood, whilst Scott Sinclair and Riyad Mahrez have both impressed in recent pre-season outings and come in at just 5.0 and 5.5 respectively. Concerns over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Yannick Bolasie elevate Jason Puncheon in our thinking for Palace’s trip to Carrow Road.

Forwards

At present, we’re going without Sergio Aguero unless he’s passed fit by Manuel Pellegrini on Friday afternoon. Diego Costa’s hamstring is causing concern – the Spain international was passed fit by Jose Mourinho prior to Sunday’s Community Shield only to be ruled out injured on the day. Costa scored five goals against weekend opponents Swansea last year, though, so we’re keeping an eye on Mourinho’s press briefing before making any decisions here.

Wayne Rooney is set to lead the line for United at home to Spurs. Second only to Hazard in the Captain Poll, he seems a safer option for the Red Devils, with new boy Memphis Depay perhaps taking time to settle. Romelu Lukaku looks poised to recover from a hamstring problem as the Toffees welcome Watford to Goodison and, like Graziano Pelle, comes in at 8.0. The duo have scored ten times between them in pre-season, with the Italian leading the way by six strikes to four. Finally, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – at just 5.5 – is our preferred budget forward and his pace should pose Villa’s dodgy defence problems aplenty.

Community Champion

Representing the Community in Gameweek 1 will be regular poster Fuzzy Warbles, who is now in his sixth FPL season. Although he has never breached the top 10,000 he came mighty close in 2010/11 with a rank of 10,085. Last season saw a return to form with a rank of 24,104, some 50,000 places higher than his 2013/14 tally.

I'd dodge the Nathan Baker bandwagon if I were you. His ownership is at a daft rate considering his chance of game time this season appears to be pretty slim. His price could drop like a stone. You'd do better with a 4.0m bench-warmer with a lower TSB%, that way should a regular starter emerge amongst the 4.0s, you can straight swap them, whereas you might have to find 0.2m to swap Baker out and it'll take twice as many transfers.

How long do you keep a striker or a midfielder if they don't perform?

    2 or 3 games max I believe.

Looking at the fixtures, the likes of Lukaku & Pelle have the best first 2 games, so why no love for them?

The David Silva effect has taught me to keep a player even when theyre going through their blanks. But saying this i never owned Pelle last season so that must have been tough, probably fixture based if they are failing in 2 easy on paper fixtures consecutively i would out them

There weren't any other managers to sign. Josè left them and went to Chelsea, Guardiola at Bayern and would never go to Real, Simeone would never go to Real, Klopp wanted to take a sabbatical...they signed the first cheap spanish manager they could find.

      1. Camp No No

There were a plenty. Why not go straight to the source and sign Maurizio Sarri, who took Rafa's job at Napoli, for example. Or Eduardo Berizzo, or even his godfather Bielsa, who is still out of contract.

        1. Frank Black
          • 13 Years

Sarri? Seriously? Come on, at least Rafa won a Champions League, ok that was ten years ago but still...Berizzo? Bielsa? They wanted a spanish manager with some experience, Sarri is a Serie B manager.

I'm exceptionally going to save this comment. "Sarri is a Serie B manager" is so incredibly uninformed statement. There's a good reason why he's the new Napoli manager, which you apparently are unaware of.

This is my first comment here so would you please rate my team and give me some sugestions. Ive come second in my group of friends for about 3 years running now and want to come first haha.

    My team is

    Ruddy, Butland
    Mertesacker, Cedric, Jenkinson, O'shea, Taggert
    Hazzard, Mane, Milner, Ozil, Gueye,
    Wilson, Costa, Rooney.

    Can swap gueye for a 4.5 and taggert for a 4.5 easily(Huth).

Obvs just waiting to see how costa is on the weekend.
Did have walcot in for mane and wilson as kozak and gueye as wanyama.

Any help what so ever appreciated. Thanks

      Biiig strikers - check

Maybe no need for haz and Costa so try and get a different big striker for a few weeks.

Probably the sensible thing to do, but something makes me think I can get away with this as long as Coates plays.

        No money tho..

Don't touch Ivan, downgrade Sinclair (play Sakho every week) and you got 0.5 for Cedric.

Fabianski made the most amount of saves last season and kept the 3rd most clean sheets.... At 5.0, why isn't he in more teams...??

I'm thinking for a stand alone keeper. Thinking 4.0 Hennesey for the first game but after that Swansea have decent fixtures for a while...

I'd do that in a heartbeat but it's hard to find 4.5m for Nordfeldt (SWA backup). I don't want to be without keeper if he gets injured

He was straight in my team at the start but I've distributed the value elsewhere and I need to keep money in the bank in order to guarentee being able to transfer to Aguero/Hazard/Sanchez if needs be.

He's been in my team since day 1 and I'm standing strong with the decision.... Swansea are perfect. Good enough to keep clean sheets but not good enough to stop shots coming in to be saved....

As much as I hated Dzeko last season, he won us crucial games during his time.

But 14m for a 29 year old is good business and maybe means we'd be getting another striker in.

let's be honest, money means nothing to city. You can't honestly say they were waiting for £14m or to get dzeko off their books in order to bring someone else in?

We idin't do it that way.

We adhered to FFp rules. Paid the fines. Got our squad capped for CL. Spend within limits.

That doesn't happen if you have bribed officials.

Got transfer plans chalked out for the first 3 weeks.

Involves getting benteke and Aguero in.

Starting with Sterling and a def.

Another striker next to Bony and Agu and sterling who "can" play in that role? Dont think that will happen.

29yr old players are in their prime when it comes to age. Best years for a footballer are 26-30.

I do think that Dzeko is a good forward and that he will do well in Roma.

Hi it would be much appreciated if anyone could tell me what they think of my potential side (any any suggestions of potential transfers to strengthen the team). My current team is:

    Courtois (Schwarzer)
    Darmian Jagielka Cedric (Targett Ward)
Hazard (C) Silva Cazorla Henderson (Wanyama)
    Rooney Benteke Wilson

I also have no money left in the bank with the current team

Thanks, any help would be much appreciated

Jagielka is great but not from the start ( bad fixtures), Darmian is not the best defender for that money ( Man Utd isn't that good in defense), Silva > Sterling and you have 1 mil in the bank so you can do Hendo > Mane since you have Benteke.
