For the second consecutive Gameweek, Man United edged their way to three points in the most unspectacular style, easily keeping hosts Aston Villa at bay to claim a 1-0 win. Adnan Januzaj was the unlikely hero, bought into the side by Louis van Gaal in the “number ten” role, he took his opportunity with a crafty first-half strike. Meanwhile, our Captain Poll leader Wayne Rooney disappointed his horde of owners with a listless display, as the United back four claimed further returns. Here’s the notes on Friday’s encounter…

Januzaj Stakes a Claim

With rumours of a loan move to Sunderland gathering pace, Van Gaal handed the young Belgian a central attacking role behind Rooney for the Villa Park visit. Januzaj’s first-half strike certainly strengthened his claim for a place in the first XI, with his introduction allowing Memphis Depay to take up the left flank berth he occupied for PSV last season.

At just 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Januzaj would clearly be a steal if he can nail down a regular role, though his withdrawal just before the hour mark perhaps highlights Van Gaal’s reluctance to extend his pitch time – the young Belgian started only seven times for the Red Devils in 2014/15. Furthermore, the club’s interest in Barcelona’s Pedro raises further question marks over Januzaj’s place in the overall pecking order.

Lacklustre Rooney Fails to Spark

They may be sitting pretty at the top of the table but, from a Fantasy perspective, it’s fair to say the Old Trafford outfit have failed to impress in the final third.

Van Gaal’s men managed a mere two shots on target last night and, bearing in mind they scored with their only attempt on target at home to Spurs, the lack of spark is a major concern for high-ownership assets such as Wayne Rooney (41%) and Depay (23%). Juan Mata, meanwhile, remains an under-the-radar option – owned by just 7% of Fantasy managers, he grabbed the assist and maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Certainly, last night’s decision to shift Depay to the left will give Van Gaal food for thought. Whilst the summer signing fired an eye-catching seven attempts, Rooney failed to produce a single shot over the 90 minutes.

Given that City’s schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, Rooney and Depay may well be set for significant sales once next week’s home clash with Newcastle is out of the way, as we look to find space for the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva in our 15-man squads. Rooney is already suffering heavy sales, soaring to the summit of the FPL “transfers out” rankings overnight.

Darmian and the Defence Hold Firm

Whilst their forwards toil, the United defence chalked up a second straight clean sheet after keeping Tim Sherwood’s side at bay. The visitors restricted Villa to a single shot on target, with Sergio Romero once again benefitting from David de Gea’s absence to offer the value route into their backline at just 5.0. With uncertainty over the Spaniard’s future, though, Matteo Darmian looks the most profitable pick here; the summer signing – who’s risen to 5.6 – has now picked up a couple of bonus points in each of the first two Gameweeks. Clashes against Swansea, Liverpool, Southampton and Arsenal in the five fixtures directly after the Newcastle match suggests his short-term prospects are perhaps less enticing, though. Quite frankly, United’s rearguard has impressed but has yet to face an opponent that’s provided a sustained and direct threat on goal.

    Rooney was the odd one.

A lone striker playing for Top 4 team, playing in front all that talented, multimillion midfield, no one really to share or to steal his goal from. Should be fantasy gold really, but it wasn't.

He have such a good fixtures early up, and would be easily get double figure, but obviously the lone forward system not working for him and a year playing at central midfielder not helping either - in other words "work in progress".

He is so bad - this one can sum up his performance last night : http://www.fourfourtwo.com/statszone/8-2015/matches/803177/player-stats/13017/0_SHOT_01#tabs-wrapper-anchor

At this moment, forget about captaincy option, at 10.5 and his current form he's not even worth the spot in one team either.

Currently contemplating to sell him and bring someone worth their salt, but it worth the wait.

My take on Rooney is keep him for now, because luckily we, Rooney owner, have one fixture left to assess him before we decide what to do - Club Brugge; the game that every one of United players should turn up, one of the big fixture for them this season.

If not for the huge United fan base, he would already drop in price by now. We are lucky for that.

Just to throw out there, his record against Newcastle : P22 G12* A8 (no penalty goal).

It's not all his fault, United as a whole just don't look very attack orientated which is having a big impact on Rooney. They are also becoming the most boring team in the PL to watch totally devoid of excitement.

Been trying to say this the whole time. Everyone seems to be blaming Rooney, but Depay, Mata, Young deserve as much of the blame.

Good point. Although, there was couple of moment when Rooney stagnant their attacking flow last night, either by his movement or by giving away cheap possession.

Right now their defender are more attractive compared to their attacking players; Darmian and Smalling looks like a proper Bonus magnet.

Never considered a team's fan base being linked to price changes before. Suppose it makes sense.

I live in Manchester and play in a mini-league and notice this effect first hand. Team's are overly loaded with United players and when United are performing poorly there is obvious resistance to swap them out.

I'm sure this is the case for a lot of casuals with their supporting team, hence the effect on price change fluctuations. So the bigger the fan base the bigger the effect of this.

The majority of the time this effect will be overridden by the masses but United's fan base is probably a significant enough proportion to have an effect.

Delarosa is right IMO, Rooney may drop still but the 'fan base' effect will slower the rate.

Agreed, and you probably get it the other way as well with fast rises, ie. with Di Maria last season. Jude Rooney, no-one's saying United players don't fall in price or even that fan base is the primary factor in fluctuations just that there is some effect from it.

I think it have some effect - if you see the market value, United players have the most movement in players price, either rise or fall.

So, imo it does suggest their huge fan base do have some effect on players price.

How did Rooney finish top of this captains poll???

He hardly received any votes on my poll, yet topped this one.
Then when ou look through the leagues you see hardly anyone actiually captained him

Even the contributers and mod league, of the 20 players only two captained Rooney.
They have Rooney in the scout picks , but none of them actually give him the armband

Yet Benteke , who romped away with my poll does not even get into the scout picks
    What gives?

I imagine Newcastle will score. No idea on the fixtures but I'll probably pass. Refs will learn about Darmian and his rugby tackles soon enough.

Well, is Marc Andre ter-Stegen really such a good keeper? I know keepers have bad days, but he has conceded 13 in his last 3 games (one for Ger U21 and two for Barcelona). And can't say he was not at blame for any of them.

He hasn't had many good performances for Barca. The defence is really bad without Pique, he's the Terry/Fonte of Barca...

He was good when he first arrived, but seems to have got progressively worse...

Great with the ball at his feet though.

Morning all. Thought a bright spark in the Villa team yesterday once again was Jordan Amavi.

Think he's the real deal. His BPS was astranomical for a team that conceded a goal and didn't score. If Villa can get Gestede fit he might be worth the extra 0.5 over his teammates

People need to take into account that with these new chips in store, it was always clear that newbies and rookies want to try that out, giving them more returns at this point of the season. In other words, fantasy managers who retain their chips and who keep faith are set for a major decline in their ranks.

So far, triple captaincy... Walcott's captaincy was a fail and Rooney's captaincy is another fail. If this is another week of low scoring, this means their chips weren't properly utilised. Which also means, another opportunity for those who keep their chips - a golden opportunity to utilise it in the future.

My point is, don't be upset if your ranking is low. See it as a good opportunity to invest that in the future. You know how the Premier League fixtures work and you will know a good strategy to utilise those chips.

    😉

I don't get all the early panicking.

The winner of my mini league last year wildcarded after GW1. Still doesn't have Kun either and bought all the GW1 performers.

I saved my xfr and will use 1 this week with the aim of setting myself up to do Ozil to Sanchez for GW4 unless something more urgent happens.

In no rush right now, though, despite my low rank.

In pre-season, West Ham had a lot of play out side with their full-backs, something Tomkins cant offer. Also, they wont sit as deep against other teams as they did against Arsenal, highlighting Tomkins lesser mobility, also he wasn't tested at all by Cazorla, and when he was tested on occasion by Monrael, who isn't great going forward, he wasn't very good.

Jenkinson will play. I'm 99.99% sure.
