Liverpool climb to joint-third in the top flight after a second successive 1-0 win. Christian Benteke grabs his first goal for the Anfield outfit, whilst Jordan Henderson supplies the assist before being forced off with a foot problem. Here’s the notes from Monday’s floodlit encounter…

Benteke Fires Reds To Victory

Christian Benteke came up trumps at the second time of asking, opening his Liverpool account by virtue of a controversial goal. Although Bournemouth fans will lament the linesman’s decision not to raise the offside flag after Philippe Coutinho seemingly interfered with play, Benteke’s 40% ownership were delighted to bank the Belgian’s nine-point haul in an otherwise low-scoring Gameweek.

Benteke’s prospects are mixed over the next five Gameweeks (ars, WHU, mun, NOR, AVL), with two challenging road trips balanced out by three enticing home encounters. Nonetheless, the former Aston Villa hitman will certainly fancy his chances to score at Old Trafford, having netted in both league ties against Manchester United last term.

The Reds were far from commanding but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory and clean sheet. Naturally, Fantasy managers will be drawn towards their rearguard assets, with Joe Gomez (4.6) presenting the cheapest option of the current starters. On that note, the difficulty of Liverpool’s next trio of fixtures and the threat of rotation from Alberto Moreno diminishes the 18-year-old’s appeal slightly.

Philippe Coutinho failed to register in back-to-back matches, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying: no player in the league fashioned more attempts at goal (eight) than the Brazilian playmaker in Gameweek 2, emphasising his status as the most potent goal threat in the Reds’ midfield. Of course, Roberto Firmino – who replaced Jordon Ibe in the 70th minute – harbours the potential to steal that crown away from his compatriot when he’s afforded a starting berth.

Jordan Henderson delivered his first attacking returns of the campaign with the assist for Benteke’s close-range strike. His 20.1% ownership couldn’t cheer for long, however, after the Reds captain was replaced by Emre Can at the 52-minute mark due to a foot injury. Brendan Rodgers revealed after the match that Henderson missed training during the week because of this complaint:

“He’s had a problem with the bottom of his foot. He hadn’t trained for part of the week, he was taking some painkillers with it. He did ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to try it, he wanted to give it a go, but you could see he was limited in his running. He did great for us in the period of time that he was on but it’s important that we get victories and it’s important that we have fit players on the field and unfortunately for him he was just in too much pain.”

Ritchie Impresses Despite Cherries Defeat

After carding a 1-0 defeat for the second week running, Bournemouth join Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in the relegation zone. The Cherries turned out a spirited performance but failed to test Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet with enough regularity, tallying just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the Cherries’ positive play funnelled through winger Matt Ritchie (5.9), who ranked fourth for attempts at goal (five) among midfielders this Gameweek and struck the upright with one of his efforts. In light of the south coast club’s excellent upcoming run of fixtures (whm, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), the Scotsman’s 4% ownership may well be reluctant to cut their losses just yet.

Budget forward Callum Wilson was less impressive up front alongside Joshua King, mustering just one shot all night. With places in our three-man frontlines at a premium and having already dropped to 5.4 overnight, Wilson seems unlikely to survive the chop among those managers with Wildcards active.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his opening day line-up, drafting in both Eunan O’Kane and Max Gradel for their first starts, with Dan Gosling and Marc Pugh dropping to the bench. While Wilson disappointed, it was King who made way on the hour-mark as Howe looked to revive fortunes. New signing Lee Tomlin was introduced for King and he could now threaten to work his way into the starting line-up for the trip to West Ham in Gameweek 3. At the back, popular budget option, Tyrone Mings, was again benched with Charlie Daniels retaining the left-back berth.

That's a little misleading. Due to either being injured in the early stages of the bench, or only making a cameo substitute appearance due to returning from injury, Aguero has only played more than 30 minutes against Everton on 3 occasions.

You are on a wildcard. You have one player on which you have already gotten a rise and another on which you are expecting a rise. You can have only one. Bag the double rise in the player who you aren't going with eventually and then buy the player you want for 0.1m more or the other way around? I believe in banking the double rise since you are making money anyway.

Assuming it is Manchester City players you're talking about... The risk is that Yaya/Kompany don't rise twice and while you hold them, waiting for their double rise, Silva/Kolorov rise by 0.1 making them unaffordable for you (since you need a double rise to gain value on a player).

    3. Ludo
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 3 months ago

I'm a dullard, so I'm getting Silva/Kolarov before their rise, rather than relying on Kompany/Yaya rising twice, just in case the predictions are off. Your way is better, though.

Oops, I was meant to say this as well. It's probably best to just pick the players you want in your team given the uncertainty around the price changes.

Depends how certain you are you want the single rise player (A). Since the price rises aren't an exact science, there's always the chance the other player (B) won't rise twice. If you're sure you want player A, better off just keeping him.

No need to WC, you have a good team.

Save your WC for double game weeks so you can take full advantage of the bonus chips (All out attack, triple captain and bench boost)

Ha ha, I know talk about ridiculous luck!

WC got instantly played when adrian got red. Annoying thing is I wasted a transfer on him and would have been a point better off if I'd have played no keepers. Meant I couldn't shift walcott last week too so missed out on points there....grrr.

    Hi all. My team:

    Courtois | Hennessey
    Mertesacker | Cedric | Coates | Huth | Oxford
    Hazard | Cazorla | Sterling | Mane | Milner
    Rooney | Pelle | Defoe

I have 2 FT and £0.5 ITB but am falling well behind already with 42 points after 2 game weeks, I am thinking Rooney + Milner or Mane out and Aguero + Mahrez in. Anyone any other suggestions or thoughts? Really appreciate any help lol.

    Cheers.

Yep, that sounds good, I would swap out Milner. Also, you're probably better off having an uber cheapie rather than 8 playable mids/fwds. No point wasting cash on the bench.

How's this for a WC team? Currently jumping on price rises but hoping to end up with:

    Butland Schmeichel
    Kolarov Jenkinson Francis Gomez Richards
    Silva Payet Ayew/Shaqiri Ritchie 4.5
    Kun Kane Pelle

Can't decide between Ayew and Shaqiri. Ayew looks in good form, but tough attacking fixtures ahead, might be worth a short term Shaqiri punt?

    Feedback would be appreciated! 🙂

I don't know why, but I'm not sold on Mahrez. He has looked great the past two weeks, playing very far forward, plenty of shots, etc, but this seems way above his baseline (looking at his stats and having watched him over the past few seasons). Has something changed? Otherwise I just feel as though he'll regress back to his mean.

And Ritchie was unlucky not to score v Pool, he had a superb strike hit the post.

Mahrez is playing in a team that scores many many more goals than Bournemouth. Also Ritchie's price is dropping whereas Mahres' is rising. Form over theory IMO and if Ritchie starts banging them in, it's an easy switch

You're daft if you pick ritchie over mahrez. Mahrez cheaper, on pens, in a better team and has great stats. Plus you can make a fair penny on him too.

Haha, I'm definitely making a penny on him, he's in my WC team at the moment. But more to catch the rises.

Will have a think about it. Thanks!

Would you not want Gomis or Ayew vs sunderland atleast for the one GW and then you can transfer out?

Not having a great time right now!

    Pantilimon McCarthy
    Richards Huth Mings Targett Gomez
    Silva Hazard Sterling Anya Aarons
    Aguero Rooney Defoe

Not the greatest of teams I know, on 92 points at the moment though so could be worse. Got 2 FT's, 0 itb, how should I use them? Thinking Mings to Muniesa this week and carry a transfer over next week for Rooney and Aarons to Pelle and Ayew?

    Thanks in advance

true, I really don't trust gomis though, don't like him as a player whatsoever, but Lukaku's fixtures atr dreadful, I do agree. I may well just wait for lukaku's second rise and then sell for pelle and bank the 0.1

I prefer Williams' next four fixtures, and Swansea are looking very solid, so I'm going with him. Dawson may prove to be the better long term pick, however, but I wouldn't want to spend 5m only to bench him for the next two matches.
