Memphis Depay nets twice as United grab a commanding first-leg lead over Belgian outfit Brugge. The FA reject West Ham’s appeal over Adrian’s sending off, Villa’s Jack Grealish could be in line for a weekend return, whilst Dick Advocaat contemplates changes to the Sunderland defence.

Depay Brace Sees off Brugge

Manchester United triumphed 3-1 at Old Trafford over opponents Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off. Following a Michael Carrick own goal, Memphis Depay hit back with two excellent strikes in the first half to grant the Red Devils the lead. Marouane Fellaini then nodded home in the 94th minute to extend the hosts’ advantage.

The Scout Says: Louis van Gaal named the same XI that secured the win against Villa last Friday, fielding Depay on the left wing and Adnan Januzaj in “the hole” behind lone striker Wayne Rooney. Considering how Depay flourished in his favoured wide role – with his second goal of the ilk that he routinely produced at PSV Eindhoven – you’d fancy him to be deployed there henceforth. Over 32,000 FPL managers have now drafted him in this week as United prepare for the visit of Newcastle. With the Netherlands international shifted from the number ten berth, Januzaj and Fellaini (who is still suspended domestically) will be hoping to secure a central role, though it’s clear that Van Gaal is still in the market to strengthen his attack, with Thomas Mueller and Pedro strongly linked. Having bagged the winner against the Villains, Januzaj will likely be afforded another opportunity to impress in the league before Fellaini’s three-match suspension is finally served.

Adrian ban upheld by FA

West Ham’s appeal over Adrian’s weekend dismissal was rejected by the FA yesterday, meaning his three-match suspension will remain in effect.

The Scout Says: West Ham’s upcoming schedule (BOU, liv, NEW) throws up two home ties that looked like prime targets for clean sheet points, compounding the impact of Adrian’s ban. Recruited from Birmingham this summer, substitute shot-stopper Darren Randolph is very much an unknown quantity at this level, casting doubt over his ability to be an able stand-in. Fantasy managers in possession of Hammers defenders have reason to be confident, though, after witnessing Slaven Bilic’s troops rebuff Arsenal’s advances in Gameweek 1. Those that jumped on the Reece Oxford bandwagon, however, will likely be eyeing up alternatives, with Pedro Obiang expected to usurp the 16-year-old in central midfield at Upton Park against the Cherries.

Grealish plots comeback against Eagles

Having scored on his return to action with the Aston Villa U21s this week, Jack Grealish could return to the matchday squad for the senior side’s trip to Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Tim Sherwood also revealed that Carles Gil was withdrawn from the reserve match through injury, while Jores Okore and Jose Angel Crespo are recuperating well from their respective knocks:

“The Derby match was a good workout for the boys. They need games – the lads who haven’t been playing. I thought Jack was very good. He played to the last minute. He looked fit enough to maybe be up for selection this weekend. Carles came off with a tight groin which is an indication the lack of training he has actually done. He will get fitter. Jores is not fit yet. But he is out there running. Jose is still not fit. He picked up a groin problem a few minutes into the Nottingham Forest game. It is disappointing for him – and the rest of us. But he won’t be too far away. Overall, we’re quite healthy.”

The Scout Says: Following the arrival of Jordan Ayew and Adama Traore this summer, Sherwood has a multitude of wide options at his disposal, negating the need to expedite Grealish’s return to first-team action. Nonetheless, the West Midlands club could certainly do with some of the academy product’s invention, considering their lack of creative spark across the opening two Gameweeks: no side has created fewer chances (eight) or fashioned fewer goal attempts (12) than Villa.

Advocaat contemplates defensive reshuffle

Baffled by the ineptitude of his team’s rearguard, Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has threatened to enact changes for Swansea City’s visit on Saturday. In particular, The Dutchman implored his full-backs to concentrate on their defending:

“I didn’t want to change the back-line already after one game. But at the moment, there are players playing who I can’t understand why they are playing that way. I cannot understand it, honestly. But there must be a reason and I hope that they can tell me. I spoke to the players and told them that we like full-backs, who if the possibility comes, they go forward. But I’ve changed that. I’ve now set up a different way. The first way for the back four is now defence. And then the opponent cannot get the kind of space they got at Leicester. Take care of your man, and beside that, if you can do a little bit more, then go forwards, otherwise not. We have to change the basic facts.”

The Scout Says: John O’Shea – who was a stalwart in the Black Cats’ defence last term, starting all but one league tie as the Wearsiders went on to bag an impressive 13 clean sheets – looks likely to be drafted in for either Younes Kaboul or Sebastien Coates in light of their dreadful starts. Furthermore, with right-back Adam Matthews waiting in the wings, Billy Jones’ starting berth is seriously under threat. Meanwhile, Patrick van Aanholt (5.0)’s attacking instincts – which engendered five assists in the previous campaign – are set to be reined in by Advocaat, reducing his prospects further as we look to bail out on the Black Cats backline.

    Rooney > Diouf
    Bentaleb > Depay

I have 2FT, so no hits required and the cash fits in perfectly.

But it means a 3-5-2 for a few weeks to come, will it be a sound move ?

Was I dreaming or did I see a stat that Payet has the highest something or other in the last 3 years? Chances created or something? cant be true? haha

Payet’s tally of 17 assists was the best in France and the fourth best in any major European league in 2014/15. That’s the headline statistic but the underlying data was arguably even more impressive. His total of 134 chances created was more than anyone else. Indeed, only two other players – Kevin de Bruyne and former Lille team-mate Eden Hazard – topped 100.

It would be fun to see what they would do if they were playing in France, it would break the stats charts I'd say 😀

Also Payet's goal threat is poor and the level of team he is currently at is not as high as where he came from relative to the rest of the league.

He looks a good player but I don't think I'd be tempted unless he was 6.5m (possibly 7m but I prefer 2 or 3 other 7m mids over him).

    Thoughts on these transfers?

This week: Sterling & Benteke to Mahrez & Gomis (-4)

Next Week: Mane & Rooney to Sanchez & Aguero (-4)

    Gives me this team :

    Ruddy, Rudd
    Azpi, Koscielny, Huth, Coates, Targett
    Sanchez, Fabregas, Payet, Mahrez, Westwood
    Aguero, Lukaku, Gomis

Having watched the highlights just now not so sure about memphis yet.. He loves to take shots outside the box but his conversion ratio is a big worry imo.. he might come good against weaker teams but against the bigger names he will struggle.

There is no doubt Kolarov to start next 2 games but I don't want to miss half of those City games between gws 5-9.

Looks like there could be 3-4 cs in 5 games.

I would like to think that, with Man City performing so well and Kolarov's stats being so impressive that San Pellegrino would avoid rocking the boat, but there are not guarantees.

I would go with Kolarov & a 5m def or 5.5m mid that can be downgraded to free up Kompany funds.

You could argue why go not go with Kompany from the off then, but Kolarov's stats are beastly and I'm hoping for big returns

I tend to watch my fantasy players in games a little too much. BUT Gomez did get caught a couple of times upfield when others lost the ball. He might even crack a nod at Centre back the way Lovren is playing!

I think he's worth the gamble. I brought him in last week. It's not like he is a 4.0 who will be tricky to upgrade. If he gets dropped, it's a straight swap for another performing 4.5.

Impressing at training on the LW? I'm guessing its a defensive sub idea to close out games. Or perhaps a solution when they play top teams.

    Bottomed on the last page:

Created a new draft for my WC team, any thoughts:

    Romero / McCarthy

    Kolarov / Richards / Muniesa / Francis / Targett

    Haz / Sanchez / Depay / Mahrez / Westwood

    Wilson / Aguero / Benteke

I know the defence is a bit weak but i figure I have two of the "big teams" in Koloarov & Romero and then Richards , Muniesa & Francis can all rotate with the fixtures ok.

Targett and Oxford wont play much more. Kind of risky with a Kolarov that is rotated.
I would have Silva rather than Hazard. Hoolahan isnt nailed on.

Targett is only there for the short term. I think Bertrand is due back in 2-3 gameweeks.
Hoolahan has done well so far, is on pretty much every set piece and is my rotation-mid. I agree about Silva/Haz but I want attacking cover for Chelsea and I trust Hazard more than Fab (would consider Oscar but he's out). Will maybe try and bring Silva back in.

        Cheers

But how many rotation risks do you want after playing your wildcard? Hardly unthinkable that Targett and Oxford get dropped, Hoolahan drops to the bench, and then any other injuries and your in trouble.

I'm considering a wildcard partly to get a rotation keeper. Surely you don't want to be going until at least January with one sub-elite keeper and one ft per week.

        Some good points.

After last season, I've decided on a from the same club approach to keepers (although that may change later).

Targett is a calculated short-term risk, sure Bertrand will take his spot back in a few weeks, in the mean-time I've got a cheap way into Saints defense and will have a couple of FTs to get rid of him.

Hoolahan may get rotated. But I figure with him playing in the hole able to support a lot of attacking players and being on Pens, FKs and Corners his points potential outweighs the risk of the odd benching (for now).

Kolarov was my only real option for getting into the City back line. While fixtures are good it's worth it.

Oxford will probably have to go from my squad.

Swap him for Lukaku. I think Everton will really struggle against City.

You'll have this benching dilemma every week. Inevitably, you'll have points sat on your bench sometimes. All your options are in form. I'd bench Redmond out of those.

Not having a cheap, obvious bench fodder is just a headache.

I think going without hazard isnt riskier than going without Silva or Sanchez. I don't think ownership should deter people from getting players who they think will score more points.

Whether you think it is a good move or not is different but by definition it is riskier to go without Hazard as if he scores well you lose out massively compared to if Sanchez or Silva score well especially as more are likely to captain hazard than Sanchez or Silva also.

this ^^. Everyone panicking like mad about drops this week have underestimated the amount of wc's that have been played I reckon.

Also people expecting multiple double rises will be very disappointed too imo as due to the number of wcs in play there are less normal transfers which are the only ones that count towards rises and falls afaik.

Apart fron the fact that people who haven't wildcarded will have more info to work with, won't they also experience the same when they wildcard during the coming international breaks, r.e. the price changes?

My main reason for wildcarding was to protect my underperforming players(there were 4 or 5) from dropping, and build a squad around Aguero, who i didn't start with.

Yes and no Demi. The next time the wcs are played there will be less played so more non wc transfers so you could have more double risers (say if kone or wilson gets a hatty etc) that you can ride for a 0.1 and then dump prior to deadline.

I think you're fear of players dropping may have been somewhat exacerbated by the price change websites which are skewed due to the abnormal amount of wc activity.

I just used my two ft's to get in Kun and while I have a few that look like they may be dropping I think I'll take the hit on the odd one or two as when I do get to play the wc their will be plenty of more value out there where all the players that are dropping each week may actually be about to hit good fixtures or may have got back in their teams. There are a lot more dropping than rising so there should be plenty of value to take advantage of especially at the lower range where you wouldn't likely waste transfers in normal weeks.

Ps I also think the main reason I would play a wc is to fix my defense but I really don't know enough to predict who will be tight at the back after two gws so that is one of my the main reasons for not playing it. That and the fact that there will be circa 300mm worth of transfers between now and deadline which will shake things up massively and may make some of the transfers made now look really bad.

Fair enough Dino. Those are all really good points, and have made me think twice and now i'm a bit apprehensive about what's to come in the next 5-6 gameweeks. There are likely to be more double risers later on then? I can see why that would happen now, but still feel the points i can get from my new team over the people who had the pre-gw1 template will negate the advantage later wildcarders will undoubtedly have. Not fully, but some of the advantage.

Like you say, my defence needed action. It's right that i got rid of them i think, and i can look at better defences or ones that aren't dropping. The ones that have failed e.g. sunderland, swansea will be easy to pick up again when they get their act together as they are going to be cheap.

The main thing i've gleaned from your post is the advantage of later wildcarders having lots of droppers to look at and possibly get at cheaper prices. Didn't really think of that, although i can somewhat counter that with a hit here and there, so i think i'll be okay.

I think most people reckon the effect of the remainder of the transfer deadline will be pretty minimal, bar the likes of Everton who need to business, and City who are getting Otamendi and possibly KDB. A lot of sides seem to have got a lot of their new players in early already.

For me, I've played my wildcard because I feel that my previous team was falling by the wayside. If I can get a 20/30pts injection into my score from wildcarding this week then I'll be happy

Yep same here, plus i didn't want the likes of Aguero, Sanchez and Mahrez to be out of reach too soon, although overestimated the the price changes as said above.

Think we'll only know whether it's been a success or not from gw 10 onwards, so plenty of time to gain a lead over non-widlcarders for now.

Fair enough Dre but I really do think that the quick boost of 20/30 points could be lost over time as we realise who the best budget defences are for rotation etc as these are transfers that you won't be doing during normal course of the season. Also as per below I'd be fearful of the effect new additions will have on those you drafted in.

E.g. Wba have been linked with a new gk all summer so that would tell me that Myhil place may be in Jeopardy, also I really cannot see Liverpool going into the season with just Gomez as a lb. I am sure there are many more examples of budget players that we like that may either drop out due to transfers in/out or have their role changed so that it means lesser out put (or greater). We really don't want to be wasting transfers on budget players so your 20-30pts could be eaten up while you sit and watch those playing wc's set their teams up with all the information in place.

I'd agree with almost all of that Demi and I don't think playing the wc now will be catastrophic but maybe just marginally better results with later wc.

Re transfer business, last year the record was smashed and set at 850m+ and this year with the new tv deal coming into effect I expect that record to be surpassed again and we are only at high 500m's at the moment. I don't know where the transfers are coming from or going to but I expect big business before the end and it may be at the lesser clubs where you have bough budget defenders etc (can't see liverpool going the season with gomez as first choice lb for example).

Out of interest what have you gone with for your backline now?

Good point about the new TV deal dino. I was looking at Gomez in my current team, as i can't bear the thought of him continuing to start, and rising in price while i keep thinking he'll be dropped each week. Sort of like Kane last year, but substituting him dropping for stopping scoring goals.

Believe it or not, i've currently got Kolarov. Happy to have him, knowing he will miss out on a few games, and hope the rest of my defence and protect and cover. If i got Kompany, i wouldn't have enough to improve on my mid and attack, which is where the main focus for points should be.

The rest i'm not sure yet. Will need to work out how much money i've got to play with, when i stop playing the risers. I'm looking at Darmain(has he impressed you btw?), Huth, a Bournemouth defender and someone from the likes of West Brom or Swansea

But i expect West Brom to do some more transfer activity, getting Marshall in goal, talk of them selling Lescott and buying another defender e.t.c

Yeah Darmian looks a proper defender a bit like Azpi and I expect him to continue to hoover up bonus points in cs.

If I was going with a wc def currently I think it would have Darmian, Azpi, Francis (best 4.5m def imo), Williams, Dawson.

^^ See I did contemplate a wc due to the poor start but after going through the thought process above I decided against it for now.

I'd probably have Myhil and Boruc in Goal with a view to dropping one of them once I had a lead on if Myhil will stay in the team or not. I really think rotating gk's might bite hard this season as when you look at Adrian and Myhil 11 and 10 pt returns they were in games where you would probably have them benched. The 3 bonus points for the unlikely cs means I don't think it is practical or worth it points wise to rotate gk's. Three of those hauls would add about 0.75ppg to a gk for the whole season.

I hadn't planned on playing the wildcard so soon. However, I feel like my hand was forced, despite keeping almost a third of my original side. (Myhill, Kolarov, Azpilicueta, Pelle).

The main reason is seeing players in my squad's value decline (Ritchie, Wilson, Baines) and early pace setters like Marhez, Albrighton, Kompany, Payet, Gomis, Anyew, Gomez, even Augero despite only 1 game start to increase. Delaying further could see you priced out of the market of some heavy hitters.

Another reason is Chelsea's disappointing start, with £18.5 on just 2 players (Hazard & Ivanovic) can't justify their huge tags at this stage. Looks like the decision to give the team and extended holiday hasn't paid off.

My biggest decision is do I stick with Pelle, who scored on opening fixture and was unlucky not to add to that tally against Everton or jump on the Gomis/Diuof bandwagon? I'm thinking I'll give the big guy another week with watt, NOR, wba coming up, you'd fancy him to score at least 2 goals, 1 assist & 1 bonus over that period.

    thoughts??

    Butland
    Kompany - Darmian - Richards/Targett/Gomez
    Payet - Sanchez - Toure - Mahrez
    Aguero - Pelle - Gomis

1.5m ITB to go Pelle - > Kane next week. Whow would you play as third defender?
