Owen Hargreaves steals the show as Man City ditch holders Birmingham. Steven Gerrard returns to the Liverpool fold, though Kenny Dalglish is quick to play down the hype. Chelsea suffer a couple of injury worries in their derby win over Fulham, while Rio Ferdinand looks in line for a weekend return as United go to Stoke. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Andre Villas-Boas played down the possibility of a spell on the sidelines for Petr Cech. The Chelsea keeper was subbed off in last night’s Carling Cup win over Fulham after suffering a head injury in a collision with Orlando Sa. With Hilario also out, it left Ross Turnbull as the only keeper available to Villas-Boas and although Turnbull helped the Blues through to the fourth round after a penalty shoot-out, Villas-Boas seemed positive over Cech’s prognosis:

Petr went for a scan in the hospital and he’s okay. He felt a little bit dizzy from the early concussion at half-time. We decided, and he decided as well, it was better not to take risks.

Daniel Sturridge was also taken off after hurting his knee in the process of scoring a disallowed goal and the Chelsea boss also had news on the forward:

The ligaments are okay. If he misses one (game), it won’t be more than that.

To further add to Chelsea’s woes, Alex was sent off and will miss the weekend home clash with Swansea.

Yossi Benayoun took to twitter yesterday to reveal he will be out for “a week or so” after suffering a strain in Arsenal’s Carling Cup win over Shrewsbury. The Israeli will miss this weekend’s game with Bolton as well as a Champions League clash with Olympiakos. Arsene Wenger will be hoping the midfielder will be available for the following weekend’s North London derby against Spurs.

Steven Gerrard returned to the Liverpool first-team for the first time in six months last night. The skipper featured in the Carling Cup win over Brighton but, while Kenny Dalglish was delighted, he was quick to downplay expectations and will continue to ease Gerrard back into action:

He has had a few disappointments along the way and just to get 20 minutes will have given him a lift. We will manage the situation as diligently as we have done to get him this far. We want the same as what he wants but we need to be careful with him. We won’t get carried away with the fact he is back for 20 minutes, but it’s great for everybody.

Martin Kelly also returned from a hamstring strain to give Dalglish a boost at right-back ahead of the home showdown with Wolves on Saturday.

Owen Hargreaves and Kolo Toure made their first starts of the season for Man City last night. The former may have hogged the headlines for his superbly taken opener in the 2-0 win over Birmingham, but it was the City forward selection that was of most interest to Fantasy managers- Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez started, which bodes well for owners of Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko ahead of the weekend clash with Everton.

The Everton-West Brom clash saw both managers field strong sides. David Moyes gave starts to new boys Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi and it was the hosts who prevailed with a 2-1 win at Goodison Park. The Toffees are now on a five-match unbeaten run, though the same can’t be said for Roy Hodgson’s side right now- the Baggies have lost five of their seven games in all competitions this season and are struggling to spark.

Rio Ferdinand is on course to appear for Man United this weekend. The centre half has returned to full training this week and with Chris Smalling sidelined for a fortnight with a groin strain, Ferdinand would slot in at centre half once again, with Phil Jones moving to right-back for the away trip to Stoke.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Quick question….. Is it worth a hit to bring in bosingwa?

Defenders are kompany. Jags. Simpson. Rjohnson. Enrique

    Would be transferring out jags

I had a look at your team.

If you were going to take a hit to get Chelsea coverage I would suggest doing it in attack however you're unlikely to part with any of Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko, Silva or Young unless you have already (i.e. Dzeko?)

Mata is undoubtedly the Chelsea coverage you really want this week and I can't see how you get him in. My advice is to stick with what you got.

              😀

I just knew you had used that free trade to ditch Dzeko for Adebayor (template transfer this week). I have the option of doing it myself but I don't give much credence to price rises and feel Dzeko could outscore Ade this weekend.

Yeah dzeko could get a nice score. It was a bit of a knee jerk transfer however I think there is less chance of ade being rotated which swung it for me. Hope it pays off

Smalling injured, Holt rotation risk, Bosingwa against Swansea, Agbon in form and against QPR. I assume the Taarabt > HBA transfer is mainly to afford the others? If so, I say go for it

Not sure about the Ben Arfa transfer. It could work out very well since they have an 'easy' game this week, but I don't think he'll play the full game, or even start. The other ones seem smart though.

      Smalling -> Bosingwa - Yes.

Taarabt -> Ben Arfa - Maybe - will Ben Arfa jump straight into form?

Holt -> Agbonlahor - Perhaps leave in Holt for another week? Sunderland at home has to provide the occasional opportunity (or is he unfit/not playing?)

      Smalling to Bosingwa. tick

      Taarabt to Ben Arfa. cross

      Holt to Abonglahor. tick

You need three ticks in order to take a hit. That being saif, Ben Arfa will be a good FPL player once established back in the first XI (possibly GW8?)

Ben Arfa is needed to fund the transfers. It needs to happen for any of the other transfers to happen.

I have Dyer. You cant convince me Ferguson is a good pick, I can personally guarentee you will be burnt by having 14 playing players, and I have no doubt in that, keep him if you want I dont care, just a warning

Just because he's the only 4.0 midfielder I assume. I don't get why people would waste a transfer (and a place in their squad) to have him though.. I mean for 0.5 more you can get a player in Johnson who actually scores.

Everton are going after a club record - they've beaten Man City away in the last 4 seasons. Can't see them winning again this year but maybe a draw. Either way it's going to be a proper battle.

Alright guys, I could really really do with some much needed help/advice, this isn't your typical RMT.....more of a "what do I do to get out of this mess I am in" lol

I have already taken a 4 point hit and this is the best I can do....

    Given (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Kompany Enrique Brown (Simpson)
    Mata Young Silva (Walters) (Dyer)
    Rooney Adebayor Sturridge

With Sturridge injured I fear I may be forced to play Simpson....not a bad shout but playing a 5-3-2 has never been my thing. Also bringing in Walters and Dyer don't seem like viable options with both of them having such difficult fixtures. Therefore I am considering doing yet another change....taking an 8 point...another move that I am not a fan of!!

Please guys, help a brother out! 😉

I'd go 5-3-2 and avoid a hit. You have two in-form strikers and 2 mids with nice fixtures + Young. Plus all your defence have strong fixtures!

If you do take a hit and go 4 at the back, I'd have Simpson in ahead of Brown anyway

Ur team isn't in bad shape. U could play all your defenders. I see at least 3 clean sheets out of them. Or possibly Walters as he hits pens and may sneak a goal or assist. This way u could play 4-4-2 and drop either brown or simpson

Keep it like this for this week, even if it is 5 3 2. But for the future here is my advice. U have too much pricey and good defenders and most of the time u would be forced to play 4 or 5 at the back. U need cash redistributing IMO. Check the rotation for your defenders and I believe that u don't need Bos and Komp and Enrique and Brown. But if u persist that they are all good value reconsider playing 4 4 2 or 4 3 3 most of the weeks, which could work for u.

      I hope that helps,

      Cheers,

Never thought I'd see the day when I had to think twice about captaining RVP at home to Bolton.

Don't have Aguero so, going with the captain poll, it would be RVP. Don't think the poll has been correct once yet this season though. Other options are Dzeko, Suarez, possibly Mata. Don't like having my captain play in the early Saturday game, call it daft superstition, and as much as it pains me as a Liverpool fan, I can't see us walking over Wolves.

Anybody else not have Aguero or Rooney? If so, who are you captaining?
