Arouna Kone is the star of the show in Everton’s 6-2 thrashing of Sunderland. Liverpool heap more misery on Jose Mourinho at the Bridge, whilst United’s struggles in the final third continue ahead of some fine upcoming fixtures.

The Player

It’s fair to say that Arouna Kone stole under the radar as Fantasy managers assessed Everton’s chief protagonists ahead of their excellent run of fixtures.

Having failed to start a league match since Gameweek 6, the Ivorian was transferred out by over 17,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers for Sunday’s clash against Sunderland and resultantly dropped to just 4.8 in price.

Kone’s hat-trick and assist helped him earn a 20-point haul against Sam Allardyce’s side and surely places him in the driving seat for yet another start as the Toffees roll up to West Ham this weekend.

Encouragingly for Roberto Martinez, Kone has racked up five goals and three assists in just 586 minutes – that fares very well when compared with Romelu Lukaku’s six goals and four assists over 984 minutes. Indeed, despite being stationed on the flank, only four forwards with 500+ minutes under their belts have scored at a quicker pace than Kone’s 117.2 minutes per goal this term.

As evidenced by a goal and assist against Watford in Gameweek 1, Kone’s threat may prove a potent weapon when the Toffees look to go on the offensive. Let’s not forget that Everton played all of last season’s top eight teams in the first ten fixtures and it may be that Martinez has overlooked the Ivorian due to a run of tougher match-ups.

As the schedule begins to ease, Lukaku’s security of pitch time as the lone striker is not in question and the Belgian will understandably earn the bulk of Fantasy interest. With Martinez looking to take advantage of the upcoming fixtures, though, there’s a chance that Kone may yet throw his hat into the ring as a viable cheap forward if his manager rewards him for Sunday’s showing with a run of starts.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea earned Liverpool their first three points under Jurgen Klopp as the German’s “Gegenpressing” philosophy starts to make an impact.

The weekend victory maintained the Reds’ unbeaten start since Klopp was appointed – all the more impressive given that they have also faced Spurs and Southampton prior to their head-to-head with Jose Mourinho’s men.

Crucially for Fantasy managers, the Merseysiders look to have some in-form options right across the board. Philippe Coutinho’s double indicates he’s rediscovered the swagger that brought him a Player of the Year nomination last time out, whilst Roberto Firmino has now started each of the last two in all competitions and could be pivotal to their progress under the new manager.

Christian Benteke needed less than half an hour off the bench to bully the Chelsea backline into submission, grabbing a goal and assist to add to his strike against the Saints in the previous Gameweek. In two appearances under Klopp, he’s already bettered his output under Brendan Rodgers.

At the back, the Reds will be bolstered by the fact they’ve conceded just twice, given those aforementioned fixtures. Again, Klopp’s tactics will be key to how we assess the Liverpool rearguard and his penchant for attacking full-backs has seen Alberto Moreno fire six attempts in three fixtures with the German at the helm – more than any other defender.

With his side still eight points off the summit, Klopp may have laughed of title talk and played down expectations but there’s no doubt that the upcoming fixtures will turn many a Fantasy managers’ head. Over the next six Gameweeks, home encounters with Palace, Swansea and West Brom, allied with trips to Newcastle and Watford, look set to give the Merseysiders the perfect platform to continue their ascent up the table.

The Talking Point

It turns out that United’s 3-0 win over Everton in Gameweek 9 was something of a false dawn.

Having seen his side lose by a similar scoreline at Arsenal in the previous Gameweek, Louis van Gaal’s decision to move Anthony Martial wide left and shift Wayne Rooney up front again had looked inspired as the Red Devils ran riot at Goodison.

Since then, though, United have failed to score in the subsequent two league outings, drawing blanks against City and Palace, with Martial’s initial impact quickly waning due to his manager’s tactical switch. The young Frenchman, having looked so promising as a Fantasy option, has now earned more transfers out than any other player this Gameweek – that’s despite the fact that United are poised for some excellent upcoming fixtures.

The Martial exodus says everything about the Old Trafford outfit’s decline as a source of attacking options. Over the last four Gameweeks, the Red Devils sit bottom for attempts on goal, with 30 – put into perspective, the likes of Leicester, Man City, West Ham, Arsenal and Spurs have registered more than double that tally over the same period.

Perhaps, as the Dutchman suggests, it’s no more than a temporary blip but the underlying numbers do not bode well for those still holding United attackers. Nonetheless, those superb fixtures cannot be ignored and it may well be that the Red Devils’ defence – with four clean sheets in the last five – will be the main beneficiaries of the Dutchman’s philosophy over the coming weeks.

      It has to be.

LVG reiterated his faith in Rooney and Martial is not worth having when he's on the flank in a team that produce very few chances

Oddly....and it depends on LVG's next move...it could be time to bring him in. Unless the silly old fool is gonna persist wth Rooney top.

Another blank in the CL for Rooney will build a lot of pressure on LVG from both the supporters and the press.

I'd be more tempted if he starts up front.

If Rooney is starting up top again and still doesn't score it wouldn't give me any more confidence that he's going to start Martial up top

think there is a theme emerging with west brom and their unorthodox fullbacks. they seem to get a clean sheet or concede three, very polarised and tbf pretty useful for FPL rather than those infuriating runs where teams are pretty tight but keep conceding 1.

anyway, the full backs which are almost always centre backs pushed wide or midfielders pushed back. the one type of player who always makes them look like blaggies (blagging baggies) is wingers with pace and dribbling ability.

GW1: conceded 3, navas and sterling.
GW2: CS, jurado and layun (slower passing technical players).
GW3: conceded 3, pedro and hazard.
GW4: CS, affelay and shaqiri, but down to 9 men in the first half.
GW5: CS, tadic and post-ACL rodriguez (mane didnt start due to international duty).
GW6: CS, gil and grealish (sherwood's classic phase of thinking sinclair in the hole and grealish wide left wasn't ridiculous).
GW7: conceded 3, deulofeu and naismith, deulofeu did all the damage.
GW8: conceded 2, zaha and bolasie.
GW9: CS, borini and one of larsson and gomez (lens was suspended).
GW10: CS, redmond and jarvis (maybe the one exception, both pacey, redmond a dribbler, but neither are top level).
GW11: conceded 3, mahrez and albrighton.

it's almost perfect and is completely logical. against passers it's more about the positioning where someone like dawson will excel.

next up is man utd which is interesting. mata on the right and last match rooney ended up on the left!
after that a certain alexis sanchez rocks up, then it's victor moses o'clock.

seems a position you can't just pick up overnight. he's competing with other premier league full backs who might have decades of experience in that position, aside from being more athletic. all the little things you pick up over the years that he wont have

You haven't come up with any facts tbf.

Show which Tony Pulis games they got their cs in v teams that had fast wingers and you may be proving a point. Maybe all 16 cs (I think they had a few before TP took over?) were v teams that didn't have great wingers?

Not really, true. Yes they boosted his stats but it was quite obvious that he was world-class at one point in time. All you had to do was watch him play and completely dismantle teams on his own (similar to Lewandowski).

Daniel, did you bench Vardy? You said logic dictated that he would blank at the weekend, I told you that was nonsense. Did you listen?

Daniel tried to explain that the law of averages meant that Ayew would do well and Vardy wouldn't, meaning that we should all buy out of form players and ditch those that are producing.

I've been quite happy with our current defense tbh.. when Ivanovic was playing every Chelsea fan and friend i knew blamed him for his mistakes and lack of pace every game. when he got injured they cheered! when they realised Baba Rahman was not upto the EPL level they panicked.. When Zouma got them a couple CS's and helped them improve from RB they praised him.. one defeat vs Pool and everything has been forgotten and IVanovic is the saviour again? 🙄

I think Rojo is pretty nailed. Who disagrees?

Since he came back he's failed to start two games which was down to injury (wasn't a named sub).

Blind is lurking but LVG seems one to just pick his best team as he sees it, and suspect his games will come at CB for Jones).

Might have a nibble at his price. Smelling is a little exxy for me.

I am seeing a lot of Ivanovic hate on FFS , first read this - http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2015/10/16/9549555/whats-gone-wrong-and-how-to-fix-it

    An excerpt -

"Time to take on the topical debate in a straightforward, no nonsense, Jefferson Montero way.

As we mentioned above, Branislav Ivanović is the all-around wing back on the right side in Chelsea's set up. His aerial dominance makes him a weapon on both attacking and defensive set pieces (for his heading more than his grappling talents though) as well as in open play, when Courtois/Begović knock it long or when the opponents decide to switch play.

With Willian vacating the right flank to play the ball in central areas as a 3rd central midfielder, that also leaves the right side very exposed in transition. In case the opponent has time and space to pick up a pass in Ivanović's wing, Chelsea used to deal with those situations with either Willian doing another superhuman sprint to cut the pass off, or at times Cesc Fàbregas helping Ivanović and Willian to box the opposition's winger (and his overlapping full back).

Defence is about defensive overload before thinking about getting stuck in a challenge. Only when the closing down/cover support shape is set around the holder of the ball can a defender be proactive and try to win the ball back. Mourinho, like many other managers nowadays, doesn't encourage centre backs to vacate space centrally to support full backs. It's the central midfielders' job to help the full back to deal with wingers.

This, is not happening right now at Chelsea. Cesc Fàbregas is nowhere to be seen to cover the inside of the field when Ivanović is isolated against Montero, Bolasie, Naismith or Brahimi.

Let's also settle on something that many people tend not to take into account. Full backs should never defend 1v1 against elite wingers. Elite wingers are elite wingers because they can succeed more often than not at beating their man. A full back losing a "1v1" (the very restricted portion of space and time which can be regarded as a 1v1) happens all the time, but with proper cover support and midfielders properly cutting off passing lanes, the winger is generally doomed to give the ball away shortly after.

The situation that is very wrong with Ivanović right now is that he has to deal with elite wingers on his own and has no support whatsoever around him. He is the last one to blame, for failing to repeatedly accomplish the feat of winning the ball back when backpedalling against a Premier League winger who had space to gather pace to take on him.

This probably explains why a two-time Champions League and 8 times League winning manager has maintained his trust in him despite worldwide Twitter backlash."

But if there will continue to be no cover, then there is no value playing Ivanovic.

If the article is correct, surely the most important thing is Chelsea desperately need to provide cover for their full backs?

Azpi on the other side has Hazard in front of him who is woefully out of form and not tracking back enough either.

Why hasnt Azpi looked so poor then?

Ivanovic was terrible at the beginning of this season, no argument.

Interesting read - I'll want to observe this in a match before I buy into it fully but perhaps have been mis-judging Ivan.

Cesc / Matic need to buck their ideas up. Wonder if that's why both were dropped vs Liverpool?

Yes, but my point is that what a player achieved doesn't necessarily correlate with their knowledge. For instance, certain football writers (Michael Cox, Amy Lawrence, Raf Honigstein, Jonathan Wilson) and obviously managers who were mediocre players (Mourinho, Ferguson, Wenger), know an awful lot more than someone like Michael Owen, who won World Player of the Year.

I was literally just about to post the same thing!! That's where I am at the moment.

I missed the first half this weekend, when Saints were actually on the from foot. Was Mane out on the wing all game, or only when bournemouth took the inititiative?

was mainly wide, was swapping wings with tadic a fair bit but also roaming central. 2nd half was one of those halfs where you remember he is 'just' mane and not a reliable £30m player, touch was all over the place

He very nearly scored a couple didn't he, first half? I'm just looking at the team most likely to be torn to pieces this weekend, and I'm not sure it's Watford at Leicester. It might be Villa, but there's a greater share of points at City leaning me away from KdB, and the new gaffer will be in. Mane has to be due... Are his stats still stacking up?

yeah had 2 early chances. guy in one of my leagues benched him as he thought he would be suspended. lucky bugger.

not sure about the stats tbh

but yeah, just the thought of mane running at coates is enticing, seems kaboul is out until the international break

What's the current thought on captaincy for this week?

Leicester have the 'home bias' captaincy (even if Watford are quite solid) - Mahrez, Vardy
Man City have a Villa in disarray - KdB
Southampton have Sunderland - Mane, Pelle
High scoring NLD - Sanchez, Kane, Ozil

I'm on Mahrez currently as bang in form

    Any others? What's your choice?

Vardy currently.. Could change to Sanchez or Ozil though..

Wish I had Sanchez. I'd definitely do so if I had him.

Vardy has had incredible form, but he's not explosive which is maybe my main worry with him.

See above - I've stuck it on Mahrez for now because he seems to do more than just score the one
