Leighton Baines grabs a goal and assist for Everton reserves. Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho is ruled out for up to eight weeks. Alex Song and Diafra Sakho are close to West Ham returns, whilst Pablo Zabaleta steps up his recovery for City.

Baines Impresses for Toffees Reserves

Stepping up his rehabilitation from an ankle injury, Leighton Baines netted and supplied a free-kick assist during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Preston.

Discussing his rehabilitation with the local press, the left-back admitted he’s looking to step up his match sharpness with more minutes:

“Ten days ago I was floating on the edge of training, not really able to get involved, but now I’m right in it and have to deal with a lot of those things, even though it’s a little bit more controlled in training. So it’s about now going into these games and getting back to being at that point where I am able to return.”

The Scout Says: Everton failed to secure a single clean sheet in their last six fixtures, but the Toffees’ excellent upcoming run of seven match-ups (AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO) keeps us interested in their defensive assets. Seamus Coleman (8.7% ownership) is the most popular choice at present, yet he’s not been the marauding powerhouse we’re accustomed to seeing, having amassed just seven attempts and one assist in nine outings. Although Baines is no longer the preferred penalty taker at Goodison Park, he’s certain to take his fair share of free-kicks upon his return, in light of the fact that Ross Barkley has failed to convert any of his 12 set-piece attempts – no player has tallied more. Moreover, the English left-back has dropped to 6.1 due to his injury layoff, rendering him an intriguing differential if he can match his attacking output from the previous campaign (two goals and nine assists).

Sakho Ruled out for Reds

Scans revealed that Mamadou Sakho sustained knee ligament damage during Liverpool’s home tie against Crystal Palace and will be out of action for six to eight weeks.

The Scout Says: Sakho’s period of convalescence will likely open the door for Dejan Lovren to establish himself as a regular fixture in the Red’s defence – he started the opening five match-ups but lost his place when Sakho recovered from a pre-season complaint. Valued at 4.9, Lovren – who failed to deliver any attacking returns across 2,037 minutes last season – is unlikely to attract any interest on the Fantasy market as the 4.8-priced Alberto Moreno offers greater attacking potential from the left-back berth. Over the last four Gameweeks, Moreno charts joint-top among defenders for attempts (six) and joint-third for key passes (six), underlining his merits ahead of a decent run of fixtures once next week’s trip to City is out of the way (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun).

Song and Sakho Close to Hammers Comebacks

Alex Song and Diafra Sakho could both be back in the frame for the Hammers’ trip to Tottenham Hotspur next Gameweek. The former clocked up 70 minutes in a friendly on Wednesday, whilst Sakho has been out running on the pitch, with the club “very confident” he will make the White Hart Lane encounter.

The Scout Says: With Dimitri Payet out of the picture, it will be interesting to observe how Slaven Bilic reshuffles his troops to compensate for the Frenchman’s absence. One train of thought suggests that Manuel Lanzini will begin to operate from the number ten berth, freeing up a wide slot for the likes of Mauro Zarate or Sakho, with Andy Carroll retaining his lone-striker role. Considering that Carroll notched just two attempts (zero on target) across his last two starts, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the big Geordie dropped out for the Spurs clash, enabling Sakho to lead the line, with Zarate and Victor Moses out wide. With Song’s return offering further options in central midfield, it’s likely that Lanzini– who’s bagged two goals and assists in five outings – will serve as the only viable source of Irons attacking coverage while their line-up is in flux.

Mixed Injury News for City

Wilfried Bony has been ruled out of Ivory Coast’s back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Liberia, having sustained a hamstring injury at Aston Villa last Gameweek. Conversely, Pablo Zabaleta is progressing well in his rehabilitation and could be back in contention for Liverpool’s trip to the Etihad:

“I am doing OK, progressing well and trying to be fit for the visit of Liverpool after the international break. We’ll see how it goes in the next week or so. At the moment, the plan is to re-join the rest of the team next Monday so hopefully, everything will go well and I’ll be available for our next game.”

The Scout Says: Although back-up striker Kelechi Iheanacho has shown glimpses of his potential – netting two goals in just 192 minutes across all competitions – Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to nurse one of his premier forwards back to health ahead of a challenging pair of home match-ups (LIV, SOU). In the event that Bony is unavailable for selection beyond the international break, Pellegrini would be tempted to fast-track Sergio Aguero – who’s hoping to train this week – into a return. Alternatively, both Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling have been utilised up top in recent outings and could offer another option if the Chilean chooses to take no risks. At the back, Zabaleta’s return to the matchday squad increases Bacary Sagna’s risk of rotation. Ally this with the fact that Gael Clichy is pushing Aleksandar Kolarov for starts and Vincent Kompany is struggling to fully shake off a calf injury, and Nicolas Otamendi (6.5) is shaping up to be an attractive route into Man City’s defence. The former Valencia centre-back has already registered more shots inside the box (seven) than Kolarov and claimed eight bonus points in his previous trio of starts.

Van Aanholt Handed Reserves Outing

Patrick van Aanholt grabbed an assist (converted penalty) and saw his goal disallowed for offside as Sunderland’s U21 outfit recorded a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

The Scout Says: The Dutchman has played just one of Sam Allardyce’s four matches in charge – the 6-2 defeat at Everton in Gameweek 11, where he produced an assist. Last night’s outing perhaps underlines his fall from grace this season after chalking up an impressive five assists in the campaign gone by. Although Van Aanholt has fashioned attempts (one every 152 minutes) and key passes (126 minutes) at a greater frequency that any other Black Cats defender, he seems to have slipped down the pecking order under Big Sam, with Billy Jones and DeAndre Yedlin (both 4.4) in the driving seat at full-back. Given that the Black Cats have managed a single shut-out this season (at home to a 10-man Newcastle United side) and rank top for goals conceded (26), there’s next-to-no interest in Allardyce’s backline charges right now ahead of a very unforgiving schedule (cry, STO, ars, WAT, che, mci, LIV).

Elliot Withdraws from Ireland Duties

By virtue of an ongoing thigh injury, Newcastle’s Rob Elliot will not team up with Ireland for their Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina – as confirmed by Martin O’Neill. In more positive news on the goalkeeping front, the Magpies’ Karl Darlow returned to training this week so should be fit for Leicester City’s visit next Gameweek:

The Scout Says: Priced at a mere 4.0 in FPL, Elliot has helped the Magpies record two successive clean sheets in the league, though it’s worth noting that their opponents for those fixtures – Bournemouth and Stoke City – rank bottom (four) and third-bottom (five) for goals scored over the last six Gameweeks. Consequently, it’s hard to get excited about the Newcastle defence as they prepare to face off against the likes of Leicester, Crystal Palace and Tottenham in their next quartet of match-ups. Nonetheless, Daryl Janmaat remains the prime pick for those managers willing to back the Tynesiders’ rearguard, given that he places joint-third among defenders for key passes (six) over the last four Gameweeks. With question marks over Elliot’s fitness failing to go away, then, those eyeing up a cut-price stopper could turn to Palace’s Wayne Hennessey, who has earned three clean sheets in six appearances ahead of an eye-catching run of matches.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Baines and the forgotten men.

Has Baines, even without penalties, still got what it takes to be a viable Fantasy option. Which other forgotten men do you think will emerge as prime transfer candidates for our teams this season?

As long as Mirallas doesn't play, he offers some potential.

Generally though, I don't think he's worth it though unless:
      a) he starts putting up Moreno-like 'chances created' numbers and/or
      b) Everton start keeping cleanies and he's in the baps.

Not sure about Baines, he will create chances still but I'm not sold on our defence at all. I expect Sturridge to fire at some point IF he can get his fitness back.

The Chelsea team will emerge soon enough, possibly if Mourinho departs or if he somehow changes.

      Besides them Benteke.

As for Baines at that price he isn't really an option unless they become more steady, without most setpieces and penalties he just can't deliver enough for the price tag.

Perhaps Henderson. 6 goals and 10 assists last year, could well hit similar levels if given free reign to attack and penalties.

Nope. He's dead as a fantasy option to me.

Allowing Mirallas to take (and miss) the penalty against West Brom last season costing me valuable points should have been the end. I sold him after that but in a moment of romantic weakness I transferred him in later in the season specifically for the plum home tie against Burnley. Everton were awarded a 10th minute penalty which Barkley took (and missed). After the game Martinez confirmed if Lukaku had been on the pitch he'd have taken it making Baines arguably 4th in line for penalties.

The 'Never Bench Never Captain' era is over. It's now 'Never Forget Never Buy'

Does Silva count as a forgotten player? He was everyone's favourite City mid at the start of the season but his injury and KDB's form have seen him get replaced at the top of that particular tree. He's still a brilliant player though, cheaper than KDB and probably going to play in a more central position...

I dont think Baines should be a fantasy option. At 6.1m he's a premium defender who plays for a team that has kept only 3 CS and none in the last 6 GWs. No Jagielka and no penalties. There are better options than him.

Morning all! I just wanted to do a brief motivational post for those like Jonty that are beginning to worry about their rank.

I've had a little look at the teams that ARE doing well with the idea of convicing myself that they're unlikely to remain at the top for too much longer. Lady Norwich at 20th overall is first in the Scout league, so for these purposes I've just had a look at the current top 19:

Average number of previous seasons - 3.26. Two teams have no history whatsoever, whereas Struthious D in 2nd place is into his 10th season.
Average highest ever rank - 924,418. Only 3 teams have ever had a top 100k finish, with the best finisher being BK Spelgladje with a 37,825 rank last season. 9 teams have never managed to finish in the top million.
Average rank last season - 1,305,516. Aside from BK Spelgladje, none of the teams finished in the top 100k last season. Only four finished in the top 500k.
Wildcards used - 9. On the face of it, this is a worry for the majority of us as so many used our wildcard early on this season. However, it makes sense that the teams doing well will not need to have used their wildcard and, given the questionable history of a number of these teams, there's a chance that when the time comes to use it they may make mistakes.
Average number of chips left - 1.47. The majority of us have 2 or even 3 chips remaining, and so these may be the tools with which we rein the teams at the top in. The bad news is that 4 teams have all of their chips in hand.

I don't mean this post to seem elitist by the way (my history is pretty terrible to be fair), but the last two overall winners at least had previously had great seasons (Dufflinks in particular had broken the top 10k twice previously).

12 weeks in to the season it appears as though there are still many teams at the top that should be expected to fall. The hope is that there are many more of these guys in the top 100k which will allow us FFSers to achieve our season goals.

For a more indepth analysis in to this and a look into how the chips may be skewing things, check Colonel's post from last month: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/11607893

It'd be great to try and calculate a "true" position, to remove the chips etc. I've noticed that even though my overall rank is not special right now, i'm doing much better in the scout league than last season, so i'm hoping that will translate into a decent final rank...

You'll have a lot of people that will just drop out, full stop. Then a few bandwagons (Vardy, Mahrez etc) will derail and people will be slow to work out the next best move. And maybe start taking more risks in the final stages so blow themselves up.

In all my best years, slow and steady has won the race.

The introduction of all these chips is warping everything a bit. I've lost a few Head 2 Heads v people who have scraped a point or two more than me despite using a bench boost or a triple captain.

They'll even themselves out eventually. Christmas is a real slog with the schedule being as it is, be sure to have a reliable bench so you can field 11 at all times. And, as Fitzy mentions, fixture holes and DGWs are huge chances to get ahead, both in fielding a decent team where teams lose fixtures (Carling Cup Final weekend and latter FA Cup stages) and in planning having as many DGWers as possible.

Yeah, I've spoken to friends that have used there bench boost and considered it successful when they've picked up 16 points or so. Without getting into the pros and cons of using it in a double gameweek, 4 points for each of my 4 benched players is the minimum that I would hope for.

I have an old colleague who is the ultimate casual. He takes hits to bring players in, then the next week takes hits to take them out. He consistently finishes in the 1m rankings, despite all my best advice. He has now used all his chips.

                  GW1 AOA 33 points
                  GW5 WC 44 points
                  GW7 TC 45 points
                  GW12 BB 32 points

He's 25 points ahead of me and was 66k until last week. Guys like this are gonna get left for dead soon.

Not elitist. A huge part of this game is looking at the past to predict the future, logical thing to do. It's been a weird season, and the chips have probably helped a lot. Would be interesting to see if those who have used chips have had big pay offs (triple kin on his 25 haul, or Sanchez on one of his double figure weeks for example).

I've never been a high achiever, and am having probably one of my best years rank-wise, so I'm all for a little chaos. No doubt things will look a little more normal come Feb/March but I'm enjoying the season so far

This is something I did in the first few weeks - looked at the ranks of those ahead of me. While ranks can be improved there are some that had never finished inside the top 1,000,000!

Some of these are still ahead of me so as the weeks go on I ask myself - are things really going to change after all?

But I'm sure they will. As you've pointed out the chips are skewing things a bit.

By all odds, those 10 wildcards still left in the top 19 will be our best chance to beat them.

Coming into this season after two great season, first couple gw struck me hard with ranking well over 1mil. But after first shock, i decided to understand this as a challenge. Last two season i started very good and spent entire season trying to stay in top 10k or top 1k. But this season is so much different and i can say i'm enjojing trying to climb up the ranks. Took some gambles that paid off recently and now sitting at 24k with couple of greens behind and looking forward to next gw.

i'm not too worried about actual rank atm.
      currently 50k with 650 pts.
But the gaps above are bigger than those below me in terms of improving OR.
      Rank 1 : -142
      Rank 101 : -95
      Rank 501 : -74
      Rank 986 : -65
      Rank 4,990 : -41
      Rank 9,964 : -30
      Rank 25,000 : -14
      Rank 49,855 : 0
      Rank 99,590 : 15
      Rank 249,926 : 39
      Rank 499,295 : 61

1 or 2 dodgy weeks could see those 200k below me pass me. So even those around 500k could easily find themselves in the top 25-50k by Xmas then game on.

    Butland (Elliot)
Azpi - Alderw - Souare (Moreno) (Cook)
Mane - Sanchez - KdB - Willian (Alli)
    Pelle - Vardy - Lukaku

    a> Save the ft?
    b> Pelle -> Kane?

    (Have an Aguero-plan)

      A.

I can't possibly see what your Aguero plan can be if you do B as you'll have 3 in-form and firing strikers. Regardless though, even if you want to wait a bit for Kun, I still A is the right play here as Pelle should be decent enough for this week.

    @Doolittle -

1)Rig a mirror in your cubicle that lets you see who might be sneaking up behind you. Check out its position with someone you can trust and do likewise for their cubicle.

2)Be aware of the schedules of your boss and nearby colleagues. This will allow you to plan your deception more effectively, for example, if you know your supervisor will walk by your desk at a given time, you can take appropriate measures to be hard at work at that moment.

i'd recommend gaining some bad habits so you get moved into a corner somewhere so you cannot be seen.

        Recommendations:

        1) Grow long dirty hair and wave it about
        2) Pick your nose every 3 minutes
        3) Stop washing so much and get some BO

I don't believe they know about this site, nor that I just waste 90% of my days, because when I do work I'm surprisingly good at my job, so I keep ticking over.

They aren't strict, it's actually a really nice company, but I don't think I could get away with blatantly not working right in front of my boss.

You could argue that Ronaldo's first few were in Portugal too..

I think Neymar's more naturally gifted than Ronaldo, but Cristiano literally built himself into a machine, and nobody could match him in terms of athleticism at his peak. Not sure if Neymar will reach the same physical level, but Messi gets by without that aspect pretty ok..

Butland has the form but has a tougher fixture and Bournemouth seem to create a lot of chances so good opportunity for save points?

Kane's in for another big one I reckon, I think you might survive without Lukaku for one more week.

I threw together a little model to help evaluate my transfer/captaincy decisions. Its based on a players attacking stats, and their GW opponents' defensive stats over the last 4 GWs...It comes up with a score of sorts that you can rank players with...here's some of the scores for GW13:

      Kane: 17.40
      Lukaku: 11.27
      Pelle: 2.68

Pelle's abysmal score is down to his inability to hit the bloody target with a horrendous SoT% of 9% over the last 4 weeks(For comparison Kane's is 59%). Him not receiving any Big Chances recently doesn't help his score either.

Kane has the highest score of the week btw, at least out of the 8 or 9 options I ran through the model(all the popular ones).

Vardy's 3rd this week with a tidy 14.63, Kane running away with it at the moment. Ozil's 2nd on 15.65 which is quite astonishing considering my model places a lot more emphasis on goal threat than assist potential. I think the weighting of assist potential is about 15%, so he must be doing really well to have such a high score whilst being almost completely reliant on assists. His high SoT% does help too though.

    Butland (Gomes)
    Smalling, Azpi, Clyne, Francis, Richards
De Bruyne, Sanchez, Barkley, Payet, Mahrez
    Deeney, Vardy, Pelle

I'm at 22k having done well to keep faith with big players like Sanchez and Aguero just before they scored big, but I think i'm now what the stage where I need to change a fair number of players

The question is, where do i start? Like most, Pelle to Kane is certainly something I want to do, but having Azpi and Clyne is not helping, and Payet looks the most pressing concern...

Pelle deserves one more week. Home to Stoke - he should deliver. I also own him, but after the Stoke game, he is gone. Most probably for Lukaku (Kane & Vardy my other att option).

Good team by the way. But it is lacking Lukaku, Kane & possibly Ozil.. then the burning question of trying to bring back Kun....

There were witnesses? Argh thats not fair at all. Every day at work I throw corks, bottle tops, scrunched up pieces of paper in to this tiny little thing that I've made in to a mini bin, nobody has ever noticed. Yesterday I told someone I never miss, he said 'go on then' So Idrew back my hand it flipped and rotated slowly through the air and bang, dead centre. 'HA!' I said, he'd gone. Nobody saw anything.

In my 2nd year Uni house our kitchen was next to the living room, and the washing machine was directly ahead of the sofa. I used to permanently throw things in, and occasionally I would forget to remove them. One of my housemates was not best pleased when he did a wash, to then discover a rogue piece of chewing gum in the machine.

How it got there remains a mystery...

Looking to downgrade one of these 2 for Kun cash. Will hold off until internationals are finished though.

    Who should it be?

    A - Kolarov
    B - Azpi

Jamie Vardy, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane are all standing in a room with you. Sergio Aguero is waiting outside, and must enter at some point within the next two weeks, but only at the expense of one of the three lads currently in the room.

    Which one makes way?

Vardy seems like a bit of a **** so I'd make him leave

Having said that, I've got a lot of respect for his phenomenal rise up the leagues. And Aguero is so pretty he might turn me. I might have to keep him out

Haha it was a metaphor for which three to have in my three man frontline 😉

      Probably Lukaku for me.

I thought this was a metaphor for the dilemma we will all be facing with regards to our three striker slots in our squad as opposed to being taken at face value!

Oh boy do I look silly now, having made my decision based on their shots on target per game!

It was! I probably didn't make it obvious enough 😛

          Them Everton fixtures though...

Yeah, its a horrible decision! I'm hoping in the next few weeks something will change to make the decision easier before Agüero is fully fit.

Yep! Half hoping Vardy cops a ban, looks unlikely though...

Unlikely he will get one for birdflippinggate. Those that received bans previously (Wilshere & Suarez) did so because their gestures were at the crowd, Vardy's was allegedly made towards the officials.

Wouldn't that be considered worse though? In my opinion that's way worse.

Being offensive to officials is (rightly or wrongly) overlooked and only receives a yellow card, unfortunately it just happens so often in games. Provoking the crowd is usually punished more severely because crowd incitement could lead to a riot.

I'm in a room with 3 footballers, someone has to leave to allow another footballer to enter. Must be me leaving right? Why would they want me hanging around?

Wait until Sergio knocks on the door.

In the mean time enjoy your three some.

The other option is to invite Silva and Hazard in to join the current three. Its the big decision for many this month including myself.

I can do Ayew/Mane to Haz/Silva with 0 left itb and keep that front 3 plus Sanchez.Very tempting.

KDB owners are you sticking? I haven't been impressed lately but am banking on aguero and more important silva's return helping him.

Seems the easiest casualty in the Aguero switch.
