Another midweek without any Champions League action -we’ve got the Carling Cup to look forward to this Tuesday and Wednesday- means there’s plenty time to pause and look back at how the sides from foreign soils fared once more…

We’re half way through the group stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy game and sides now need form to either jump that final hurdle or desperately keep themselves in the competition. In the weekend gone by, form wasn’t necessarily the friend of a few sides in question…

La Liga

The reigning European Champions of Barcelona found themselves caught short at home for the first time this season when they drew 0-0 at home to Sevilla. Despite the obvious Barcelona pressure, the final minutes of this game really could and should have seen Pep Guardiola’s side skipping home with the three points.

Barca were awarded a 90th minute penalty and up stepped World Player of the Year Lionel Messi who was, after Freddi Kanoute received his marching orders for two quick yellow cards after disturbing the play, to meet his match in Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas- the saved spot-kick left the game all square.

Real Madrid traveled to Malaga, with an intriguing match-up against old boss Manuel Pellegrino on the cards. Jose Mourinho’s side swept aside their cash-rich opponents thanks to a ruthless display of finishing from a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

He might not have got a hat-trick this time round but Gonzalo Higuain started the ball rolling when he evaded the Malaga defence to get on the end of Angel Di Maria’s ball and round the keeper. Then Ronaldo was left to do what he does best as, after a few games without a goal, he too showed he could score hat-tricks for fun with three equally well-taken goals inside a devastating fourteen minute first-half spell.

Villarreal lost at home to the current La Liga leaders; not Barca, not Real, but Levante, as their astounding La Liga story keeps rolling on. After a strong, but ultimately fruitless, performance away at the Etihad in midweek, Villarreal reverted to type and carried on with their travails down the chilly corridor of defeat.

Leaving it until nigh on the last minute Valencia scraped together a 1-1 draw at home to Marcelo Bielsa’s latest project at Athletico Bilbao. Roberto Soldado ghosted through the Bilbao defence and rounded the keeper to score from the narrowest of angles. A nasty first half injury to Sergio Canales will be as equally pressing to fans of Los Che.

Bundesliga

German champions of Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways, trouncing FC Cologne 5-0. Shinji Kagawa gave the title holders an early lead when he slotted home Kevin Grosskreutz’ pull back from the bye-line. Some pinball in the box a quarter of an hour later saw Marcel Schmelzer eventually curl the ball home. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski then scored a brace on either side of the break to put the game beyond any doubt, before Sebastien Kehl’s late surging run and header made it five and out.

We’ll have a Scout report on Borussia Dortmund coming up tomorrow with a look at their shape and style of play and those players with which we have our keenest eyes on.

After conceding for the first time in months at Napoli in midweek, Bayern Munich slipped to an unexpected 2-1 defeat away at Hannover. Jerome Boateng’s early sending off gave the home side the advantage to surge into a two goal lead before they, too, had a man dismissed but, despite a late goal from substitute David Alaba giving them hope, Bayern couldn’t find the net again and suffered their first Bundesliga defeat since the opening week of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen were beaten 1-0 at home by last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Schalke, meaning two out of three of our Bundesliga-based sides stumbled to defeat this weekend.

Ligue 1

Two of our French-based Champions League sides faced off against each on Sunday night and it was Lille, coming back from a goal down to win 3-1, who continued to prove that their title winning side of last season wasn’t a fluke occurrence. Jimmy Briand scored the sole Lyon goal after a sublime ball from Yoann Gourcuff, making his first Ligue 1 start since May, cut through the heart of the Lille back-line.

Moussa Sow levelled affairs with a crafty backheel just before half-time after Hugo Lloris fumbled a corner. Another corner saw Marko Basa give the lead to Lille when he headed home Dmitri Payet’s ball then our Engishman abroad, Joe Cole, settled affairs when a break found him on the spot to slide the ball home. Well done Joe.

Marseille silenced the boo boys for a day at least as Andre Ayew, despite missing a penalty twenty minutes into the game, scored the two goals Didier Deschamp’s side needed to notch only their second win of their league campaign.

Serie A

AC Milan found themselves three goals down and floundering at half time away at relegation positioned Lecce. Hope of a comeback seemed unlikely but the introduction of both Kevin-Prince Boateng and Alberto Aquilani after the break inspired the visitors to an incredible 4-3 victory.

Boateng was the second player of this report to score a quick smart hat-trick as his trio of goals between the 49th minute and the 63rd saw AC Milan back on level footing and right back in the fixture. Mario Yepes completed the full recovery twenty minutes later when a set play was eventually left for him to head home at the back post from a couple of yards out.

Heading into the weekend on the back of three consecutive Serie A defeats, Inter Milan could really have done with a change of fortune. Claudio Ranuieri was given something to smile about after tight 1-0 victory- Thiago Motta rose highest to power home and score Inter’s first goal at the San Siro this season.

Napoli, meanwhile, recorded their second draw in quick succession, after a goalless encounter away at early season form side Cagliari. Not a heavy abundance of talking points in this one, seemingly.

The Rest of Europe

Ajax: 1-1 against Feyenoord might not have been ideal but the home side will take it. After going a goal down and having Kenneth Vermeer sent off after last gasp foul, Jan Vertonghen headed in Theo Janssen’s corner to level matters.

Zenit: A first half rush of goals saw Zenit cruise to a 3-1 victory away at Rostov yesterday afternoon. Danny got the ball rolling, leaving Alexander Bukharov to finish affairs, with an Aleksander Lukovic penalty sandwiched between the two.

CSKA: A high-scoring match against the nouveau riche of Anzhi saw CSKA head home on the back of a 5-3 victory in which Seydou Doumbia scored a hat-trick and Alan Dzagoev scored one and set up another three.

Porto: A five goal hammering at home to Nacional saw Porto stay top of the Primeira Liga on goal difference. Stefan Defour, Walter, Christian Sapunaru, Kleber and Hulk all bagged a goal apiece.

Benfica: A 1-0 victory away at Beira Mar Benfica kept their place as one of the Portuguese forerunners thanks to an Oscar Cardozo goal.

FC Basel: The “future of Swiss football” Xherdan Shaqiri scored the only goal of the game as Basel grabbed a slender 1-0 victory away from home.

Anyone know what's happening with Bosingwa's price? Totalfpl have him as nil transfers out which can't be right unless he's protected. Fiso won't work on my phone. I know Bos won't be suspended but with Chelsea's fixtures not having massive clean sheet potential I think it might be time for him to go. Would rather wait a few days before deciding though.

Oh look, another "Who do I shift for VDV question"

Right. Nani, Nasri, Mata. Eventually, I want Nasri out. But I cant drop him just before Wolves (H) can I? Was thinking maybe Mata out, then re-evaluate.

Also need to free up some cash for this move. Raylor -> Wilkinson a good move? Although this means that somehow De Laet stays, I'm happy as long as he's above 4m, but dont want to start losing value on him.

Argh, or Nani -> VDV tonight, then save my other transfer for sometime when I dont have to bother about prices. But I just know that with no Rooney, I'm going to want Nani back next week.

Nope. Nasri is my only City cover. I have Adebayor aswell, so was quite happy without VDV, but his fixtures and form just seem to be screaming buy.

Mata doesn't seem to be living up to FPL expectations. And I definitely prefer Silva to Nasri.

I'd try and get VDV and swap Nasri to Silva. If at all possible.

I'm sure someone'll come along and give you opposite advice in a moment though! 🙂

Mata is a wierd one. I think he's a great player, and can see him doing well in FPL, but agree he hasnt done it yet Reckon it could be a patience thing. I've a horrible feeling that Silva might get rested for Wolves, with Nasri given his role, so to take a hit to do that swap would hurt. Oh god this is awful.

Cheers for the advice though 😀

Done it. Nani has left the building. Shortly to re-enter, but I just can't see him scoring big vs Everton, whereas Wolves at home is a potential big game for Nasri. And I might be dangerously attached to Mata.

I've been kind of tossing up this kind of hit myself.

Like, is there really that big a difference between making 5 changes for a 16 point hit this week, and making the same 5 changes spread over this week and next (so it's only a 12 point hit)?

Would it really be that hard to make up those 4 points? And does the extra hit outweigh the benefits of having the team you want and being able to just leave it be?

I fancy AJ for at least a goal. Petrov for 2 points
Wilkinson for a clean sheet, Bosingwa 2 points.
VDV god knows, Walcott 2 points if he's lucky.
Then Ade will probably outscore Sturridge.

Yes probably a choice between Silva, VDV and Ade for captain this weekend.

I worry a bit about Silva & Aguero having a rest for Wolves, and Demps seems affected by being pushed back a bit since last year -- too hit and miss for my liking (although my fav U.S. player).

I'd choose between VDV and Ade (probs VDV for me) and listen to what Mancini utters in his sleep for news on Silva ... and wouldn't take a hit.

And I started Sessegnon this week, so you know that I know what I'm saying ... 😉

It may end up being too much work for me to bother with them either. Guess it's all speculation anyway till we hear from Mancini later this week. Would make life a lot easier if he just ruled out Aguero! Can't see that happening though

Aguero's going to score mega at some point, perhaps this weekend. On the other hand - given his recent injury - he could be warming his arse on the bench with the Villarreal game in mind. It's a dilemma.

Rovers are too good a club to be owned by the clowns at Venky's. They bought the club thinking they could make money off it by building an Indian fan base. They didn't know the first thing about football when they actually bought it (they didn't even know they could be relegated till it became a possibility last season). Hopefully blackburn do go down this year, and venky's lose money on their investment and decide to sell. That's the only way to guarantee the future of the club.

Rooney has scored 12 points in 5 gameweeks (granted he wasnt on the pitch at all for one of those game, and 22 mins in another-but that itself is relevant).

You have to think about whether hes still value. The fixtures are good but peak weeks 15-19. Before then they are largely playing teams that can defend very well- eg swansea villa newc

Morning all. Got back from the outback yesterday and found to my delight that my team had done pretty well: might take myself out of internet range every weekend to avoid the disastrous last-minute tinkering I'm prone to...

Got a couple of free transfers this week, and a big dilemma as to what to do with them. My team is:

    Vorm-Krul
    Kompany-Bosingwa-N.Taylor-Simpson-Boyata
    Silva-Mata-Larsson-Cabaye-Dyer
    Rooney-RVP-Sturridge

I can't see how I can drop either Rooney or RVP to get Aguero back, but the thought of not having him v Wolves is quite terrifying. Mata->VDV is definitely high on my list of options, as is Bosingwa->Shawcross. I also have 1.1m in the bank. Any ideas??

Whereabouts in the Outback? Did some work in WA in the Pilbara, Goldfields and Great Victoria Desert myself. Loved it, really strange landscape.

Anyway, Mata to VDV should do ya, maybe get Shawcross too if you fancy.

Northern Territory.... Just been on a 3-day tour around Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, with a night in Alice Springs either side. Amazing landscape round there. Up at 4am each morning so saw millions of stars give way to amazing sunrises every day. The distances between towns out there is mind-blowing: miles and miles of nothingness. Beautiful country.

    Vorm Ruddy

    Silva Brunt Mata Ndyer Moses
    RVP Rooney Suarez

really want VDV in but one have one trasnfer and .2 in the bank.
Obviously im not shipping out silva so any suggestions or advice on whether a 4 pointer is justified? Im thinking because of spurs run of fixtures it just might be worth it?

I'm sittin in 24,000 overall and either top of my leagues or within 10 points of top with some i have 50-100 leads. I hate taking 4 pointers but this is what im thinking

Bosingwa and mata - VDV and 5.7 (walker or others?)
Suarez and Mata - VDV and Ade Ba Agbon Dzeko?

I would definitely take a hit to get in VDV. I think you can get much better value for both Mata and Bosingwa right now.

      Bosingwa --> Brown
      Mata --> VDV

Leaves you with spare cash to upgrade next week too.

Hi again with question of how to get VDV. I've decided to keep Nani, so it's Mata to go and fund the trade.

    Krul Vorm
Kompany Bosingwa Simpson N.Taylor De Laet
    Nani Silva Mata Petrov Dyer
    Ade RVP Suarez

    Which is best?
    A: mata > VDV , Petrov > pilkington
    B: mata > VDV , Suarez > Balotelli
    C: mata > VDV , Bosingwa > shawcross

Any comment please. I'm leaning to B and doubling City on their good run.

Nah, Suarez is good for 2 more games yet. He isn't a rotation risk, you'll only want to get rid of Balotelli in a few weeks time. Think about shipping out Suarez in gameweek 12 imo.

        Team is:

        Begovic, Vorm
        Richards, Shawcross, STaylor, NTaylor, Jones

Evening all. My GW was awful. Every call went wrong. RVP > Suarez: I was right about RVP being rested from the start but Suarez scored nothing against NORWICH in 90 minutes, RVP went wild in what, 30? Jose Enrique: Liverpool concede late having dominated that game. Bosingwa: Sent off. Bastard. Sturridge: Good luck scoring with 9 men. How were your GWs?

Definitely mixed feelings. I scored exactly the average score. Given this consists of people who don't play anymore, people who check their teams once a week and some who just are not so much at FPL, I definitely should be ashamed of that.

Screw Aguero imo, you need Persie dude! Look at the fixtures…even against Chelsea they will probably score and it will more than likely be him. Get the fat lump Rooney out i say…you’ve already left it too long.

There's no Champions League this week, removing any reason to rotate. Aguero is MCI's number 1 striker and so won't be played in the Carling Cup. For these reasons I say Aguero is nailed on to start and get him on - I will be.

They do have Champions League the following week though- my worry would be that the Wolves game will be wrapped up pretty early on so Aguero could easily be subbed out early, or else he could start from the bench- with his recent injury there's a good case for resting him. Good chance he'll score in either scenario, but I've just about talked myself out of getting him at the moment...

Fair point but after dropping RVP for Suarez having heard he was going to be rested - and he was - I got completely burned because he did far more in 30 mins than the too-skilled-for-his-own-good Uruguayan mentalist. Starting to think that it's worth picking the very best every week, even taking rotation hits, because they turn what they touch into gold.

I think we'd all agree MCI coverage is essential this GW, unfortunately it's so uncertain with Balotelli and Dzeko both scoring against United and their position in the pecking order not finalized. I really don't want to go back to Dzeko after suffering 4 barren GWs with him.

Yeah I'd agree to a point- I think with any of the big guns there's always the spectre of them being randomly dropped at some point- nobody would have predicted Rooney being rested for Liverpool, for example. For the record, I really want Aguero in too but can't do it at the moment... already have Silva, Rooney and RVP- and I don't think there's comparable cover in midfield for United/Arsenal, whereas Silva is a decent way to cover City. I hope! If you're bringing Aguero in I seriously doubt you'll regret it.

Yeah it's true, it was kind of tongue in cheek. Honestly though i think any move involving Rooney out is a bit of a sideways step. I'm glad i've backed Persie but anything can happen.

I would be looking to upgrade Ramsey or money saver. Also downgrade a defender to Brown, too much money in defence i think.
