Next up this Friday we roll our usual pre-Gameweek members article, focusing on the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s ten fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

With the top four teams going head-to-head on Sunday, there’s no runaway armband favourite in this week’s Captain Poll.

Nonetheless, it’s no surprise to see Sergio Aguero leading the way yet again after netting for the fourth successive Gameweek last time around. A home encounter with Tottenham’s resilient defence hasn’t deterred just over 26% from backing the City striker, who scored all of his side’s goals during a 4-1 win in the same fixture last season.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino takes second spot after delivering a third double-figure haul in five appearances last time out. The Brazilian – who earned third spot in last week’s Poll – is backed by 14% as the Reds make their way to basement-dwellers Villa.

Romelu Lukaku is hot on Firmino’s heels as Everton entertain West Brom. The Toffees frontman has already served up a 16-point haul against the Baggies in a 3-2 win at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 7 and with Gareth McAuley ruled out and Craig Dawson doubtful, he’ll be looking to build on last week’s strike at Stoke.

Further back, a trio of candidates are jostling for our differential attention.

Alexis Sanchez earns 9% of votes for Arsenal’s clash with Leicester. Although the Chilean has little form – just one assist in eight league appearances – it’s worth noting he produced his highest haul of the season against the Foxes, courtesy of a 20-point return in Gameweek 7.

The 8%-backed Diego Costa, meanwhile, has six goals and two assists in seven ahead of the visit of a Newcastle backline that’s managed just one clean sheet in 10.

Dimitri Payet is selected by 7% as West Ham head to Carrow Road. Like Sanchez, though, he’s struggled for any sort of consistency since returning from injury and blanked in five of his last six appearances.

Delving a little deeper, there’s a number of candidates offering real differential appeal. Mesut Ozil and Riyad Mahrez square up at the Emirates on the back of double-figure hauls, whilst Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have been in fine scoring form of late. Given that Spurs hammered City 4-1 at the Lane, it’s something of a surprise that Kane only has 3% of the votes cast this week.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Dawson atleast has a game in GW27, so I kept him, just in case I need him.

Moreno has a blank GW27, even though he has a decent game this week (villa) I had to use one of my FT's. Still have 4 x GW27 blankets with 2 x FTs next week.

I would sell Moreno, unless you're okay for GW27.

I'd bench Lingard. Maybe even Payet who has three blanks in a row. But the underlying stats and the fact that he's up against the worst defence in the league gives me the feeling he's due a major haul. Tricky situation since your offensive 8 are all good picks. But I feel Lingard is the odd one out. Don't see a goals galore in the esrly kick off at SoL.

Really tricky one. It'd put me off tbh; unless you REALLY don't need that transfer somewhere else.

With no other strikers really, reckon Costa prob players tbh - but i bet it'll hurt!

Rupert i am in the same boat... Both of us talked this idea whole week, but now i might just save a FT and carry over. Really not not happy about it, but Kompany has a good impact on the whole team and Silva might actually do something for a change... Really sad...

Well more of a stocking than a sweater. with a hole in it. ugly colors as well.

I mean, i wanted to make it interesting and maybe get back in the lead in ML, but no. Save the FT and be a miserable sod when Costa bags a brace and i didnt do it.

I'm playing Butland due to the Ighalo factor.

        Butland BOU (A)
van Dijk SWA (A), Dann WAT (H), Cresswell NOR (A)
Arnautovic BOU (A), Payet NOR (A), Özil LEI (H), Mahrez ARS (A)
Agüero TOT (H), Kane MCI (A), Vardy ARS (A)

Bench: Hennessey WAT (H), Alli MCI (A), Alderweireld MCI (A), Dawson EVE (A)

Watford haven't scored in their last 3 away games and only in 1 of the last 5 - granted they were tougher sides but still they haven't been great. Stoke have conceded what, 9 in the last 3?

Here's an eye opener - or at least it was for me anyway!. In a quest to seek out some half useful defensive stats, I created a custom league table for the second half of the season thus far (GW14 onwards). Leicester have the best defence since then (7 goals conceded) closely followed by Spurs (8) and the top four positions are exactly as they are overall but guess who's sitting just outside the Champions League spots in fifth place?

These last two, hell, even three seasons have just ruined fantasy football for me. There's no scope for creativity, or being different. Being 'in the know' and going against the grain has been punished. The likes of Ighalo, Vardy, Austin(14/15), Kane(14/15) Mahrez etc. have established the template early on and the ability to break the mould has been minimal. Get behind early and you're gone. No chance of recovering.

Just sold Aguero for Afobe(c). RIP brothers. It was nice while it was enjoyable.

"Get behind early and you're gone. No chance of recovering."

I think this is a bit dramatic.

What I will say is that in the last couple seasons, your captain choice can make or break you and that is frustrating.

Dry your eyes pal. There is always a scope for creativity. The game is getting harder because people are getting better at identifying analytics. You can curl up and die or you can FIGHT!

All it takes is a template team with one strong differential to make up ground. Siggy has been taking me up the rankings over the last few weeks. The rest of my team is fairly template atm.

Swans should also be a shoe-in for a GW30 match (can't see Everton losing to Bou)..might bring him in for GW29

Single ownership is where it's at. Think about how many players the regulars here are knowledgable about but how few are viable choices or our 15 man squads. The fact that you can even think of Afobe as a captain means the pool is too shallow for you (and for many others here as well). I just wish that FPL could give us that format as an option.

I'm 20 points behind ML rival...i have Lukaku, he doesnt. He'll probably (C) Aguero.

Sagna gonna bounce from my team and not sure if I should go Soton and be safe for GW30 or grab a Chelsea man.

    Fonte or VvD or Azpilicueta?

..rest of my defense is Butland, Bellerin, Toby, Ward, Simpson.

    Head says Fonte.

BOU seem to be on the rise more than Watford for sure. Palace are at home but I thought their away results were better. Ighalo and Deeney will get a goal I think though...#WishIHadForster
