Chelsea’s trip to Blackburn last week was the final straw for many Fantasy managers. Week after week, we’d endured the defensive failings of Jose Bosingwa in the hope that his attacking returns would prove dividend but a place on the bench at Ewood Park prompted plenty to jump ship.

With clean sheets a rarity almost right across the board, Bosingwa’s forward raids always offered hope. A goal, a couple of assists and 7 bonus points early on kick-started a bandwagon that added 0.8 to his 5.5 starting price but as the gameweeks passed, his returns diminished. No clean sheet since the season opener at Stoke, 10 points in his previous seven appearances, part of a back-four that were swept aside at home by a ruthless Arsenal performance- the wheels had fallen off in spectacular fashion.

Saturday’s game certainly suggests the Portuguese player is no longer a first-choice pick. It seems as if Andre Villas-Boas has come to the same conclusion as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before him- Bosingwa, for all his attacking merits, weakens the Blues back-four considerably. Branislav Ivanovic moved from the centre to take over- the Serb excelled at right-back last season, producing 4 goals and 5 assists compared to Ashley Cole’s zero goals and 5 assists on the opposite flank.

The installation of Ivanovic at full-back proved an instant success- an assist, clean sheet and 2 bonus points returned 11 Fantasy points and more than doubled his points haul for the season. Bosingwa owners are now on red alert and with a two-week international break now upon on, he’s already slipped in price as the “Transfers Out” rack up.

We take a look at both players’ performances at right-back in the previous two games to ascertain the difference in their respective contributions:

Average Positions

A look at the Chelsea average positions from each game shows Bosingwa (17 above) pushed up slightly higher than Ashley Cole (3) on the opposite flank against Arsenal, with John Obi Mikel (12) in a deep position similar to the left-back’s. While Cole and John Terry (26) stayed close together on the left, the gap between Bosingwa and Ivanovic (2) at centre-half was far greater, with Bosingwa’s forward runs leaving Chelsea exposed all-too-often.

While the Blackburn game (below) shows Ivanovic (2) virtually as high up as Bosingwa was against Arsenal, everything is relative. Here, Mikel (12) is level with the Serb and is closer to Ramires (7) than he was against Arsenal. On the opposite flank, Cole (3) is pushed up far higher than the previous game, as is Frank Lampard (8), with Chelsea using the left flank to better effect this time round.

Passing

A comparison of each player’s passing in the respective games is perhaps surprising. Bosingwa made a total of 47 passes against the Gunners, while Ivanovic produced 63 at Blackburn but 17% of Bosingwa’s came in the defensive third compared to just 7% of Ivanovic’s- with the latter far more defensively secure, you’d perhaps expect it to be the other way around.

Going forward, too, there’s an unexpected outcome- 36% of Ivanovic’s distribution came in the final third, compared to just 21% of Bosingwa’s- as a result, he bettered the Portuguese star’s crosses (5 to 3) and produced double the number of goalscoring chances. Bosingwa’s tendency to drift inside is highlighted by 24% of his passes coming from a more central position, whereas Ivanovic’s greater positioning offers better balance and maintains the team’s shape- only 7% of his distribution was away from the flank, with 2% coming from a corner.

A look at each player’s “Preferred Passing” offers a perfect insight into their respective mind-sets. Against Arsenal, John Obi-Mikel linked up with Bosingwa the least of any of the Blues back-four; he received 7 passes and played 4 to the right-back whereas against Blackburn, Ivanovic interacted with Mikel more than any Chelsea defender, playing 11 passes and receiving 15.

Bosingwa’s attacking outlook saw him make only 1 less pass to Ramires, in the right midfield role, than he played to Mikel- Ivanovic, on the other hand, made just 4 passes to Ramires in comparison to his 11 to Mikel, a clear example of his more cautious approach.

Tackling

The best illustration of each player’s contribution to the Chelsea cause is shown by the number of and, critically, position on the pitch of each of their tackles in the respective games. The comparison highlights the flaws in Bosingwa’s game- he made 10 tackles against Arsenal but only 3 of them came in his own half. Ivanovic’s instant solidity on the right flank and reading of the game is summed up perfectly in the above diagram- he made 14 tackles, with only 3 in the opposition half.

Shots Conceded

Chelsea conceded 13 shots against Arsenal and 12 against Blackburn. Looking at the stats alone, it seems like there was little defensive improvement but closer examination as to where the shots arrived from, shows a substantial difference. At home to the Gunners, Villas-Boas’ side were ripped apart- 12 of those shots were inside the box, with just 1 outside their own penalty box. Away at Blackburn, only 4 of Rovers’ attempts were inside the box, with 8 of the host side’s efforts from distance in comparison.

Clearly, the step up in solidity was marked. Unfortunately for Bosingwa and his Fantasy owners, given the thorough and analytically sharp mind of Villas-Boas, it seems highly unlikely that this will have gone un-noticed.

    Thought of the day.
Would it be more sensible in future seasons to count defensive midfielders as defenders than midfielders?
Lucas, Mikel, Sandro and others could be priced similarly to the top priced defender in each team and then would become a viable fantasy option.

        Denilson likes this.

Or FPL could differentiate between midfielders and defensive midfielders? Make you pick 1 defensive midfielder and 4 'normal' midfielders.

Can't ever see this happening though.

No. Defensive midfielders are cheap and most are guaranteed to start. No point whatsoever making a rule for them.

What if they could have real formations like 4-1-2-1-2 instead of 4-4-2, and then you had to choose a DMF for your one position and the scoring for the DMF's should be different.

There should be points for No. of Succesfull tackles made. Just like how a GK earns a point for every 3 saves.

Maybe 2 pts for CS for a Defensive MID too.

The fact that they are cheaper surely is the reason to have them?!
There are too many positions with different types of player it wouldn't work.

It not quite enough though is it? I agree with you having another type of position would be unworkable however integrating them as defenders is a simple solution that results in these players being a reasonable choice.
For example if Mikel was 7 he would have so far scored a point more than Bosingwa and couple more than Cole - so reasonable.
Likewise Lucas would be the second top scoring defender at Pool.
Reo-Coker would be the top defender at Bolton.

I like the idea of giving more value to defensive midfielders, but I think it would be better to split the midfielders into defensive midfielders and attacking midfielders.

Following the liberalisation of the offside law in 2005 the distance between the defence and attack has become more stretched and so the game has generally moved towards four-banded formations rather than the previous three, with midfielders being split into defensive mids and attacking mids, with the modern 4-2-3-1 being the most popular formation.

So the change would be on reflecting the modern game; personally I'd increase the squad size to 16 and have 2 keepers, 5 defenders, 3 defensive mids, 4 attacking mids and 2 strikers (the majority of teams play with a lone striker these days as we know). Attacking mids wouldn't get points for clean sheets and the defensive mids would get say... 3 points for a clean sheet and possibly 6 for a goal.

After the last int break he had two hard qualifying games, so I brought in Balotelli. He didn't play and Dzeko started and scored!

          Lesson learnt!
City wear teams down and score more frequently in the 2nd half, this means subs coming on have just as good a chance as starters of scoring .

Wouldn't want to get rid of Ramsey at all. Great fixtures coming up and he's playing very well.

I'd definitely get rid of Bosingwa, not sure about Agbonlahor though. Hard to argue against his form, but Villa's upcoming fixtures aren't nice at all, and I personally can't see him keeping up his form. Mind you, I've been saying that for a few weeks now.

            Klasnic at 4.4% ownership 5 goals & 4 assists in 518 minutes.

your defence needs attention (i understand i have 3 newcastle players and ward in mine - i saved ward specifically for the wigan game as i always saw it as a plum fixture for him - he is now gone for one of wilko/mccauley/brown - i have held simpson/rtaylor on purpose as i will not transfer 1 of them out until i know which one of them will get dropped for santon - krul/vorm have good rotation apart from 2/3 upcoming games and i don't see the point of using a transfer to get 1 of them out only to use another transfer to get them back in again).

your midfield and forwards have great potential, more detailed analysis would suggest both vdv and ade is unnecessary, i eventually chose to switch to vdv over ade as for every 2 goals/assists vdv gets i believe ade will get 1 goal/assist (it pained me to get rid of ade as he served me brilliantly at the 8m i purchased him at). i see ade more as a supporting player for the others around him at spurs rather than the focal point which will mean he won't imo be prolific (20 goals+ is my definition of prolific).

😀 I'm going on the assumption that, barring injury, those 4 + RVP could quite easily stay in my team all the way through. They should cover any spurts of form from the budget players I'm missing out on (Sess, Drenthe, Walters etc.), and could provide some absolute monster weeks. Only issue really is Rooney getting back in the goals... that would surely mean a Lamps downgrade. Very happy to go forward with this though.

Sorry that's N Taylor from Swansea, though that's probably just as bad! But you're right, I have no faith in defenders this season, and to be honest it's this kind of policy I've used with success since I started FPL years back. My theory is that the difference between budget and premium defenders is most often just 4pts, whereas the difference between budget and premium mildfielders is often 10pts+.

The rotation risk of Nani is what im worried about.
SAF has clearly been working on shoring things up at the back,
which often ends in Nani being benched as Park and Valencia are much better defensively

I'd play Vorm & keep my fingers crossed. Not like away to Liverpool was any better fixture, still a 10 pointer + ManU haven't been scoring a lot since the day that did not happen.

Fair enough, Ive had vorm since gameweek 1 but hes always been my sub keeper as i dont trust swansea to keep clean sheets and the one week i chose him my sub keeper got 6 more points, not having a lot of luck with keepers

    Hi.

Looking to offload Petrov (Bol) who appears out of form/favour. I only have 0.1 in the bank which allows for the likes of Brunt/Pilks/Eagles/Rodwell. I am not totally enamoured with any of those although Brunt rotates well with Dyer, who is my super-cheapie.

My team is linked and I would appreciate any thoughts on the above or maybe even some suggestions for four pointers to deal with Petrov. I was thinking maybe Sturridge to Bendy and Petrov to Drenthe/Sess (x2 SUN!!!)

    Team linked.

    Many thanks

Thanks. I have added him to my watchlist. He had a flying start and is beginning to find some consistency again.

GW14 would appear the time to bring him in though as he has two away games now, whilst there are quite a few teams with home games in GW12/13.

I have been mulling over this very possibility but am not sure after Stoke's recent mauling. I am looking into Turner's (SUN) nailed-on-ness as this would allow Ward to Turner and Petrov to Drenthe.

Stoke have a habit of rolling over after an europa league game,
as luck, would have it thrice they have had an away game after an europa league game and they are a bit useless on the road anyway, but at home they are pretty sturdy barring the defeat to newcastle, you could consider turner but IMO stoke will keep more clean sheets

Very vague around the news about it - the stories suggest a muscle strain. If its a mild one, then 2-3 weeks is about right. He did it over a week ago now - so next weekend he'll be in contention. But thats only my thoughts of course

Please rate my Wifes(!) WC team.

She hasn't done much to it, she's lost value big time, so I'm helping her as much as I can!

    Krul-Ruddy
    Enrique-RTaylor-Brown-MaCauley-NTaylor
    Bale-Nani-Ramsey-Silva-Formica
    Rooney-Agbon-Ba

Defence could be better, but she needs more up top which is where the points are. But then I guess all women could do with more up top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

0.1 cash left over mate. Her value was 98.5 before I (she) decided to WC. Very little manouvre possible. Formica will be the 5th mid anyway - playing substitute defo required now tho, and decent for 5.0?

          Ok keep Formica,
However, you could do MaCauley->Wilkinson and Ba-> Bendtner for the next few fixtures.

    Evening Gents,

Best combo for this gameweek and weeks to come?

    A. Wilkinson and Sess

    or

    B. Wes Brown and Drenthe

Slightly worried about Drenthes discipline and Evertons form although fixtures are on his side. Sess and Sunderland seem to be finding form and come into some good fixtures but Sunderlands home form can never be predicted.

    Thoughts welcomed guys

I would personally go for A for the next 3-4 weeks,
Stoke have 2 easy home games which could result in 2 clean sheets, Sess is on form and has the fixtures also, wait a bit on drenthe , sunderland cant keep a clean sheet,
      so, Personally A.

Bosingwa, to invest 5.5 - 6.3 mil in a defender you have to get guaranteed starts. That was the thing earlier in the season + he had some form. Now, no form & not guaranteed starter --> get rid. Kompany, Jones, Vermaelen...

Im personally gonna wait until after the next 2 weeks, hopefully he will start up front and start getting his scoring boots back, but i think the next 2 matches will be more difficult. Hope he scores 1 or 2 in the next 2 games, then it gets easier in fixtures after that and he starts properly scoring.

    A) Rooney - Sturridge
    B) Hernandez - Dzeko
    C) Aguero - Welbeck

Currently have RVP, Silva, VDV and option A up top. Would it be worth switching to either of the other options considering they are my only Man U and Chelski attackers at the moment?
