Chelsea’s trip to Blackburn last week was the final straw for many Fantasy managers. Week after week, we’d endured the defensive failings of Jose Bosingwa in the hope that his attacking returns would prove dividend but a place on the bench at Ewood Park prompted plenty to jump ship.

With clean sheets a rarity almost right across the board, Bosingwa’s forward raids always offered hope. A goal, a couple of assists and 7 bonus points early on kick-started a bandwagon that added 0.8 to his 5.5 starting price but as the gameweeks passed, his returns diminished. No clean sheet since the season opener at Stoke, 10 points in his previous seven appearances, part of a back-four that were swept aside at home by a ruthless Arsenal performance- the wheels had fallen off in spectacular fashion.

Saturday’s game certainly suggests the Portuguese player is no longer a first-choice pick. It seems as if Andre Villas-Boas has come to the same conclusion as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before him- Bosingwa, for all his attacking merits, weakens the Blues back-four considerably. Branislav Ivanovic moved from the centre to take over- the Serb excelled at right-back last season, producing 4 goals and 5 assists compared to Ashley Cole’s zero goals and 5 assists on the opposite flank.

The installation of Ivanovic at full-back proved an instant success- an assist, clean sheet and 2 bonus points returned 11 Fantasy points and more than doubled his points haul for the season. Bosingwa owners are now on red alert and with a two-week international break now upon on, he’s already slipped in price as the “Transfers Out” rack up.

We take a look at both players’ performances at right-back in the previous two games to ascertain the difference in their respective contributions:

Average Positions

A look at the Chelsea average positions from each game shows Bosingwa (17 above) pushed up slightly higher than Ashley Cole (3) on the opposite flank against Arsenal, with John Obi Mikel (12) in a deep position similar to the left-back’s. While Cole and John Terry (26) stayed close together on the left, the gap between Bosingwa and Ivanovic (2) at centre-half was far greater, with Bosingwa’s forward runs leaving Chelsea exposed all-too-often.

While the Blackburn game (below) shows Ivanovic (2) virtually as high up as Bosingwa was against Arsenal, everything is relative. Here, Mikel (12) is level with the Serb and is closer to Ramires (7) than he was against Arsenal. On the opposite flank, Cole (3) is pushed up far higher than the previous game, as is Frank Lampard (8), with Chelsea using the left flank to better effect this time round.

Passing

A comparison of each player’s passing in the respective games is perhaps surprising. Bosingwa made a total of 47 passes against the Gunners, while Ivanovic produced 63 at Blackburn but 17% of Bosingwa’s came in the defensive third compared to just 7% of Ivanovic’s- with the latter far more defensively secure, you’d perhaps expect it to be the other way around.

Going forward, too, there’s an unexpected outcome- 36% of Ivanovic’s distribution came in the final third, compared to just 21% of Bosingwa’s- as a result, he bettered the Portuguese star’s crosses (5 to 3) and produced double the number of goalscoring chances. Bosingwa’s tendency to drift inside is highlighted by 24% of his passes coming from a more central position, whereas Ivanovic’s greater positioning offers better balance and maintains the team’s shape- only 7% of his distribution was away from the flank, with 2% coming from a corner.

A look at each player’s “Preferred Passing” offers a perfect insight into their respective mind-sets. Against Arsenal, John Obi-Mikel linked up with Bosingwa the least of any of the Blues back-four; he received 7 passes and played 4 to the right-back whereas against Blackburn, Ivanovic interacted with Mikel more than any Chelsea defender, playing 11 passes and receiving 15.

Bosingwa’s attacking outlook saw him make only 1 less pass to Ramires, in the right midfield role, than he played to Mikel- Ivanovic, on the other hand, made just 4 passes to Ramires in comparison to his 11 to Mikel, a clear example of his more cautious approach.

Tackling

The best illustration of each player’s contribution to the Chelsea cause is shown by the number of and, critically, position on the pitch of each of their tackles in the respective games. The comparison highlights the flaws in Bosingwa’s game- he made 10 tackles against Arsenal but only 3 of them came in his own half. Ivanovic’s instant solidity on the right flank and reading of the game is summed up perfectly in the above diagram- he made 14 tackles, with only 3 in the opposition half.

Shots Conceded

Chelsea conceded 13 shots against Arsenal and 12 against Blackburn. Looking at the stats alone, it seems like there was little defensive improvement but closer examination as to where the shots arrived from, shows a substantial difference. At home to the Gunners, Villas-Boas’ side were ripped apart- 12 of those shots were inside the box, with just 1 outside their own penalty box. Away at Blackburn, only 4 of Rovers’ attempts were inside the box, with 8 of the host side’s efforts from distance in comparison.

Clearly, the step up in solidity was marked. Unfortunately for Bosingwa and his Fantasy owners, given the thorough and analytically sharp mind of Villas-Boas, it seems highly unlikely that this will have gone un-noticed.

    Next quandary...

Everton have an awesome run of fixtures, but they are not very good at football.

Is anyone in that team worth it? They seeem highly priced. At the moment I'm 50/50 on Jags, and looking Drenthe up and down. Best to just steer clear?

"but they are not very good at football" Lol'd 😀

Drenthe looks like he'll be getting more starts and has averaged 1 point every 10 minutes in the last 6 games. Also with a bandwagon called the Rolls Royston, it's extremely hard to ignore 😉

Baines has the potential but as you say Everton have been dreadful thus far. Personally, I would have to wait for something that resembles some sort of form for me to consider one of em. Drenthe is an interesting one tho. He has been their little flicker of hope. Hes had a fair bit of love on this site the last week or two but still a no go for me.

With nice streak of games, and since they are nailed on starters in UTD deffence and both with less then 5% of possesion, i think they`ll be a gold!

Hmmm, just looking at options as thinking of dumping Adebayor for a hit.

    Double hit would be

    Adebayor > Bendtner
    Sinclair > VDV

Would still have 0.6 in bank, so is hit worth it to stave off money increase concerns over next few weeks.

    Would have team of

    Given, Krul
Shawcross, R Taylor, Brown, Williams, Warnock
    Milner, VDV, Walters, Sessengon, Ramsey
    Rooney, Van Persie, Bendtner

        I dont like the transfers.

        1. You have Given/Warnock. They are not keeping CS's and cost a lot.I assume you are benching both this gw?
        2. I personally think Adebyr will do well vs Villa(wish i still had him) He has a double coming up and good fixtures.
        3. I don't like Milner, you need Silver. Who you benching from that front 8 this gw?
        4. Seszzgnon is enough offensive cover for Sunderland me thinks.

          1. I completely agree Villa defence needs changed
          2. Ade didnt fill me with any confidence vs Fulham he was playing far too deep, I've just got rid of him on my WC.
          3. I'm not too keen on Milner either Silver is the only City coverage i'd trust
          4. Agree

I agree with your points but I think his proposed transfers will output far more attacking returns in the next few GWs

1.As stated below, they need gone, but would need 12point hit to get Warnock and Given downgraded to upgrade to VDV.

            2. Ade should get goals, but not sure how consistently after last few games.

            3. I would prefer Silva to Milner but price difference is too much, as Silva due rotation with big Champions League coming up and Milner is making big case for being in the first choice anyway as can play central or in the Silva/Nasri roles also.

            4. I'm not desperate for more Sunderland, but think Bendtner is looking good generally to start banging in and is best in the price range.

These are all great points. However in a half hearted attempt to answer them....

          1. I can understand him leaving these people in as no one wants to waste transfers on defenders/goalkeepers. It doesn't really matter who we have back there, as clean sheets are becoming very rare. I do think he should in the long term shave some value back here and invest it further forward.
          2. 0 goals in his last 6 EPL games. No guarantee of that double. His fxitures are interesting but one can have VDV as Spurs coverage, and with his very large investment on RVP and Rooney, it makes more sense to have a budget option in the 3rd slot.
          3. Yeah Milner is cack. Personally I would do the same transfers but Milner > VDV and bank some of the money. Also he could rest Rooney 😯
          4. Definitely.

I'd do the hit, looks sound.

Your midfield of Milner, Sinclair, Walters, Sess and Ramsey is mid-price heaven. You need to invest more in there and VDV is the perfect man for the job.

Walter has QPR, BLACKBURN though which makes me not want to get rid of him.

Possibly get rid of Sinclair then bring back in after those two games.

Just looking now the other combination for a 12point hit (but gets rid of my Villa defensive issues which won't get me any points long term).

      Given > Westwood
      Warnock > Wilkinson
      Sinclair > VDV

      Leaves me with

      Westwood, Krul
Shawcross, R Taylor, Brown, Williams, Wilkinson
      VDV, Ramsey, Milner, Sessengon, Walters
      Rooney, Van Persie, Adebayor

I'm stuck on the Rooney vs Nani border as well.

Both aren't in the greatest of forms, but it couldn't be far. Currently have Nani. Thinking of giving myself one more GW of decision time to see if Roo is worth it. Then I might downgrade Nani to Drenthe/Ramsey (on top of this GW's Collins > McAuley), thereby funding Gabby > Roo.

    Thoughts? Logical?

I don't like Ramsey personally, but Arsenal are playing so well at the moment and no one wants to fork out for Walcott so I understand why he's a good choice. Think (hoping) Rooney is a must over the next 10 weeks or so!

Never thought I'd ever say this being a spurs fan and seeing he's one of my least favorite players of all time but I'm thinking of buying (and I shudder as I say this) Bendtner.

I can't see with the exception of RVP who I already have and potentially Ade who I already have who is going to go on a goal scoring run and Sunderland have 4 comfortable games coming up and he seems to be their only striker.

    Thoughts?

Looking at my kneejerk transfer from Saturday or Sunday, it's looking better and better over the international break to be honest:

    Nani>Walters
    Warnock>Jones

With Nani's tough international games I can see him being rested as Fergie seems to love benching him this season as he hasn't been up to scratch. Walters Europa fixtures worry me, but he's played 90 minutes all year long so far, don't see why this would change.

Feel free to slate 🙂 (again for some lol)

keep an eye on Walters....may end up playing alot of the play off matches for Ireland...but if he comes through that okay that could be a very shrewd move.

Okay so while on wildcard what should I do??

    Begovic (Vorm)
    Enrique, Vidic, Kompany (Simpson, Taylor)
    VDV, Silva, Bale, Drenthe (Eagles)
    RVP, Ba, Agbonlahor

    0.8 in the bank

Ba's next few fixtures are a bit tricky so may not score well, but he is on form so... Similarly with Agbon, but again a player on form. If you're gonna go with form over fixtures, they're your chaps. Vidic is too expensive for me, I'd bring in Jones or Brown, even BAE. Good luck with it.

Very. He's already up 0.2 this week and it appears like there's a 0.3 cap on rises per week - so he'll be max 12.7. I reckon he'll receive his next rise post-internationals - probably a week on Friday.

Probably deliberate - to be honest there isn't much activity at this stage in an International break anyway - maybe they're updating FPL every few hours rather than the standard 15 mins or so. Activity will pick up again in the middle of next week.

Yep especially if Everton continue their poor form despite a good run of fixtures. With Jags possibly out their defense could be shoddy and their attack has been poor as well. Cahil may or may not make much of a difference and I can't see Drenthe being the savior for Everton either at the moment. However you never know, Everton could 'turn the corner' as they say

Why there are so many Cristiano Ronaldo haters? Have you watched the arrival of the portuguese national team to Bosnia? they were all screaming messi... I can't think of anything Ronaldo has done to them to deserve that....
that is going to be a tough game... I hope Nani doesn't get an injury....

      game on!!!!

      my prediction:
kallis century takes SA to 350. Johnson 5-er.
Aus get 300 odd in their 2nd innings. Ponting & Clarke half centuries.
SA collapse from 100/0 to 180 all out.

      Aus win by ~50 runs.

Am I crazy contemplating taking Vorm OUT of my WC team? Had him since the start so I would lose 0.2 in team value or even 0.3 if he rises again. I really want to pair him with Howard but can't afford. The other options to pair Vorm with (Kenny, Ruddy, Krul, Henn etc) don't appeal to me.

I'm seriuosly looking at Krul/ Westwood, perfect rotation up until winter WC....thoughts please?!

And it looks like FPL are clamping down on WCers making money....which is SSOO unfair considering the money people made WCing GW4. .

I wouldn't keep a player just for the sake of value. Value doesn't mean much unless you sell him.

I know that this sounds insane, but Blackburn are looking a little sharper recently, maybe not clean sheet wise, yet, but they're definitely much better since Samba came back.

How about Paul Robinson? Gives you a rotation of the following:

wigan VILLA SWANSEA FULHAM WBA BOLTON QPR TOTTENHAM STOKE FULHAM

        Straight up to GW21 😉

You'll regret playing Paul Robinson (of all ppl) over Vorm every week. Get Krul/Vorm. Most solid cheap defences. They're pretty much fixtures proof by the looks of it - on their day, they could keep clean sheets.
