We round off the day with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the midweek round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool at Wembley has perhaps had an effect on your armband decisions this week. With Sergio Aguero playing 120 minutes on Sunday ahead of an Anfield re-match with the Reds, the Argentine is – for once – amongst the chasing pack behind Jamie Vardy.

With West Brom set to pay visit on Tuesday evening, the Foxes frontman tops our Captain Poll for the second successive Gameweek due to his outstanding home consistency – Vardy has scored or assisted in 11 of 13 appearances in front of his own supporters.

At the time of writing, Romelu Lukaku and Mesut Ozil tie for second spot with 14% each. After enjoying the weekend off, the Belgian now faces a trip to Villa – he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over the Midlands outfit earlier this season and should be fully refreshed to take advantage of Remi Garde’s strugglers.

Meanwhile, Ozil delivered a goal and assist at Old Trafford and now looks for a third double-figure haul in four at home to a Swansea side with one clean sheet on their travels.

As for Aguero, he faces a Liverpool defence with just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks. The Argentine has already netted against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league and with the Reds sweating over the availability of a number of central defenders, he could be in line for returns at Anfield in a match that City surely have to win to remain in the title race.

There’s a handful of differentials lurking further down our poll for those willing to take a punt. Diego Costa is selected by just 7% for Chelsea’s trip to out-of-sorts Norwich, though there remains question marks over his minutes after Guus Hiddink admitted he could be rested for one of the next two matches with the Champions League clash against PSG in mind.

Marko Arnautovic will be looking to replicate his weekend 15-point return at home to a Newcastle outfit that have lost five road trips on the bounce. Riyad Mahrez, Alexis Sanchez and Ross Barkley offer viable alternatives to their aforementioned team-mates, whilst United’s man of the moment, Marcus Rashford, seeks a third successive brace at Old Trafford as Watford pay visit on Wednesday night.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

If you're not specific it's harder to help...

If you certain he's going with Vardy, I'd go with Vardy yourself. 20 points is very easy to chase and so at this point I'd just keep pace. Captain Aguero against AVL.

I'm considering it - either him or Ozil. Swansea conceded so many shots against Spurs and Fabianski is not going to be that good/ lucky again.

There was a fluidity to their attacking play, mainly because he didn't hold the line properly and faded. But he was the striker.

If you're showing me where he touched the ball, that's fairly irrelevant. It's because he was so bad as a striker that he drifted into wide positions. That seems to be the only way he knows how to play as a striker, pulling into the wings and leaving his team without a focal point.

He played up top and Welbeck out wide. IMO Walcott isn't a good striker, he's a better winger. But this season he has been so poor and I'm starting to believe he's hit the ceiling for his potential.

    Hi guys,
im considering WC this GW, cos i play against 1st from my league and i need to win.

    theres my actual team:

    Butland (DDG)
    VvD, Huth, Koscielny, Alderweireld (Dann)
Mahrez, Ozil (C), Firmino, Payet (Alli)
    Giroud, Vardy (Ighalo)

    These are my suggestions:

    Willian for Payet
    Ighalo for Lukaku
    Giroud for Kane
Dann for Delaney (need cheaper DEF if i want Kane)

What do you think? Any other option for WC ?

4 transfers from a wildcard is a waste IMO I also think you've got a good team too. Firmino to Willian if you really want him would be good I thinjk

But i need a striker too, cos i think Giroud wont play next game week and he will be resting for ChampionsLeague. Ighalo is out of form. And i dont wont -4 or -8 points.

I love the idea. It's a bit of a maverick move though. I'm very tempted.

      Reasons against:
Arnie just got back from illness, and, although he had a stormer last week, his form prior to his illness wasn't great.
Although he had a great score last week, it was against AVI.
Vardy seems like a safer option, with a good fixture against WBA

      Reasons for:
      Arnie is a beast.
      Great performance last week.
      Newcastle are awful

I think I'm going to be a dullard and go Vardy (c)

How many of us are contemplating benching Alli again this week?

I know every single time I do it, I get screwed, especially when he plays away!... so i dont think I will be. Read there isn't much to the foot injury

So, looks like I'll be benching Payet as much as it hurts thinking about it!

    Am I good to go?

    Cech(DDG)

Save it. You'll need lots of FTs soon enough

Palace are so poor in defence. Keeping Firmino for next GW.

With Coutinho and Studge back in, he looks pretty peripheral.

And hardly lumbering. 2 blanks in the last 6.

He got one assist in a 6 goal haul.

Switched Firmino to Arnie last GW, and Arnie's staying. Firming's points haul dropped now that Studge is back.

Will there be two DGW's? I still have triple captain and bench boost...COntemplating doing bench boost this week as fixtures are ok for my subs.

      Forster (Hennessey)
      Bellerin VanDijk Huth (Alderweirdeld Targett)
      Alli Mahrez Ozil Barkley (Siggy)
      Kane Vardy(c) Aguero

Would have thought so. Liverpool/Everton both have two fixtures to rearrange.

I think the most common consensus is WC 33, DGW 34 with Triple C or Bench boost and then use the other chip in DGW 37

Most gameweeks I usually bet on my captains team to score under 1.5 goals as a safety buffer. If they score two then majority of the time the captain will be involved in one of them.

Can someone link me to that google doc with the likelihood of DGW teams in 34 please?

Which teams are most likely to have a DGW in 34? Want to bring someone in with this in mind as I'm ok for GW 30.

      Thanks

Thinking of playing my bench boost this week, as everyone has a strong fixture, and don't think its a useful chip for a dgw but need to bring in a keeper for McCarthy. Got 5.7itb so thinking of getting Hart as city will have a dgw coming up. Is that a sensible move? Other keeper is Butland

Daniels is a ffs favourite who actually delivers.
        Moreno, pretty opposite.

      Another defensive question -

Think I'm settled on starting Butland, Targett & Fuchs

But should 3rd defender be Wolls (Stoke double up) or Toby?
