Sergio Aguero steps up his form as City look to chase down Leicester at the summit. West Ham’s bid for a Champions League berth goes from strength to strength, whilst Villa’s dire displays strengthens the idea of backing their opponents for Fantasy points potential.

The Player

A home clash with Aston Villa allowed Sergio Aguero the perfect platform to showcase his captaincy credentials.

Despite hitting the post with a second-half spot-kick, the Argentine still found the net on a couple of occasions as City swept aside the doomed midlands outfit to reignite their title bid with an emphatic 4-0 demolition.

Although he’s been subject to 38,000 transfers in so far this week, Aguero still only sits in 32% of squads – less than half Riyad Mahrez’ 67%, for example – which makes him only the fourth most popular forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Given that City now head to Norwich at a time when up to ten teams could be facing a blank, that low ownership level, relative to the masses, looks set to prove a very handy weapon in rising up the rankings again.

Aguero’s weekend double, his third brace in seven appearances, means he has found the net every 103.2 minutes this term – quicker than any player in the league and almost on a par with last year’s 101.6 minutes, where he scored on 26 occasions.

With a double Gameweek also to be factored in, the in-form City talisman seems set to become increasingly influential over the run-in, both to Fantasy managers and Manuel Pellegrini, as the Etihad side attempt to fire their way back into the title race in the Chilean’s last year at the helm.

The Team

An outstanding comeback win at Goodison meant that West Ham were one of only two teams – along with Liverpool – to emerge triumphant in all three of their fixtures over the hectic last week or so.

After chalking up back-to-back 1-0 victories over Sunderland and Tottenham, Slaven Bilic’s men had to show their mettle at Everton, coming from two down to grab all three points at the death thanks to Dimitri Payet.

Whilst Payet remains the jewel in the Upton Park crown, Michail Antonio’s form makes a double-up worth considering for the run-in. Priced at just 5.4, the former Forest man has also matched Payet for points per game (5.5 to 5.9) – that’s despite being fielded as a right wing-back in each of the last two matches.

Bilic’ side have also impressed at the back in recent matches, racking up three straight clean sheets at Upton Park and boosting our faith in Aaron Cresswell, in particular. Indeed, in their final season before moving grounds, West Ham have now gone unbeaten in 12 in front of their own fans and still have visits from Watford, Palace, Arsenal, Swansea and United to follow.

With a blank Gameweek 30, our interest in Bilic’s chief protagonists is obviously on pause for now but with two doubles still to follow – albeit with a blank Gameweek 35 – many will be plotting to draft in a Hammer or two. Although a Gameweek 31 trip to Chelsea is far from straightforward, West Ham have already beaten the Blues this season and if they can maintain their current form, heavy investment could be on the cards as they look to clinch a top-four finish.

The Talking Point

Having kept City at bay in the first-half, there was no surprise to see the floodgates open after the break as Villa move yet another step closer to sealing their fate in next season’s Championship.

After the 4-0 mauling, Remi Garde conceded that an accumulation of poor results over the course of the campaign means that his players’ confidence is diminishing with every Gameweek right now:

“In our situation we know that conceding the first goal, especially against a very good team like that, it’s not a good sign for us. Playing football is about tactics but also mentality. Probably the mentality of the team – and the players – has been damaged a lot since the start of the season. I think the team is getting more and more fragile game after game because of the scenario of the season”.

Devoid of the spirit and necessary battle to beat the drop, Villa’s role as whipping boys for the run-in is picking up pace.

That thrashing at the Etihad means that Garde’s side have now conceded 15 goals in the last four Gameweeks – that’s six more than any other side. Furthermore, Villa have allowed their opponents 14 “big chances” during that period – opportunities that are expected to be converted – which is again more than any side, highlighting their dire defence.

The only real surprise on Saturday was that Aguero managed to score just twice – thankfully for the visitors, the woodwork prevented that spot-kick from nestling in the back of the net.

As the midlands side slip closer towards relegation, they now brace themselves for a weekend visit from title-chasing Tottenham –
immediately boosting the points potential of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

As they tumble out of the top-flight with barely more than a whimper, backing Villa’s upcoming opponents from week-to-week may well prove a canny tactical ploy as we look to take advantage of the Villa Park malaise.

No-one has announced anything either way, and I still think the PL will be stupid if they re-arrange any games before the weekend.

I don't think it's stupid to announce games before the weekend, in most cases they can just reschedule the GW 30 & GW 27 blanks to GW 34, then after the weekend reschedule the GW 35 blanks to GW 37.

I disagree - if they wait (for just 4 days, when GW34 is a whopping 6 weeks away!) they can potentially manipulate the fixtures so no-one has more than 2 matches to re-arrange. Plus, they will know any FA Cup replays to fit in. What difference is them waiting 4 days going to make?

My team currently Team in gw34 with 5 free transfers

    Forster Adrian
Toby Fuchs Wolly Daniels Bellerin Kompany Fuchs
Mahrez Siggy Alli Firmino Payet Antonio Ozil
Aguero Kane Vardy Aguero Lukaku Vardy

Mccarthy Bellerin Ozil Payet Forster Mahrez Wolly Toby

Antonio to Alli in gw35 in order to field 11.

Thats 11 players for this week. 9 dgwkers for gw34 and 11 players for gw35

    * Assuming Arsenal win their cup matches and Chelsea beat Everton in the cup

Would you bench boost or triple captain that squad in gw34?

So, ceteris paribus, we should have these fixtures in game week 34, midweeks on the 19th/20th/21st of April.

Looking at which games are probably going to be rescheduled for GW34, I'm wondering if it's worth getting rid of the likes of Mahrez, Kane, Vardy, Ozil (if Arsenal go through) just to bring in a player that plays twice - even if they haven't got good form and fixtures?

Would you rather 1*Mahrez or 2*Wijnaldum?

I can't see myself ditching any Leicester or Spurs players tbh, as well as ozil. Maybe it's the fear factor that most in my ML's will still own them so getting rid is playing with fire in the hope that an extra game for someone else is more profitable than better form

True, and also Wij isn't the only option in that scenario so there are probably better players to have but in that particular comparison 1 Mahrez will score higher than 2 Wij

Right, I also think there is no point in getting as many DGW players without thinking of whether they can even get any substantial points. If it goes wrong, then the whole squad is out of shape for the rest of the season.

Assuming the worst, apart from Bellerin is any Arsenal defender worthy of investment?

I only ask because my ML leader already has him, but I can't see anyone else I'd get - Monreal got dropped for Gibbo last weekend, Kosc crocked, Gabriel a rotation risk.... Mertesacker??

        Hmm, I'm chasing a 27pt lead (pared down from 60 ^^)

I guess I'd just be getting Bellerin in as a covering exercise, then, assuming the worst... can't see any other value in that defence 🙁

true, Smeggs - I'm just thinking of how to cover my ML leader. He has 2 gunners to my 0 (#g30plans) so I'll have to do something if we lose tonight.

Can't see that Gibbo was played for "rest" reasons. Maybe it was cos he scored when we drew with them in the first half of the season.

Either way, puts a question mark over Monreal now.

Monreal had muscle strain or something, he's first choice. Also a better pick than Bellerin if you ask me Bellerin rarely gets bonus and his crosses are always drilled therefore regularly cleared by the first defender. Cech and Kossa when fit are also better picks.

    My team for next GW:

    Forster
    Alderweireld Kompany Otamendi Fuchs
    Alli Sigurdsson Mahrez
    Kane(vc) Aguero(c) Vardy

I've got Ozil and Van Dijk on the bench. Worth starting either of them over anyone in this lineup?

Really hoping for an Arsenal win to end the Ozil headache.

Easter during the international break as well, so 4 days without work and no PL football 🙁 can hear the nagging to "do the lawn" already...... 🙁

I finally get a weekend off work and it's during the bloody international break. So typical.

Careful with your gardening Jarvish, The birds are nesting early this year and many already in garden hedges.
Please check before hedge trimming your way through nests. 🙂

I don't touch our hedges - my theory is the bigger they get, the less visible grass there is to cut.

I have stone walls in my garden. Maybe I could plant a hedge in front of them?!

Astroturf is the way forward - is the first thing I would do to our house if I had the money to do it.

Pyracantha, not indigenous but has nasty thorns to protect birds, is evergreen, produces beautiful flowers in vast numbers May/June great for bees and pretty much all other insects and orange or red berries for migrating and other birds throughout the Winter.
If you're within reach of Brighton I give you a few to plant.

That sounds good. Thorns should help keep the kids in as well 😆

Not near Brighton but if we head down to the in-laws in Uckfield then I'll have to give you a shout 🙂

Nice to see a birding post. We had 17 goldfinches, two nuthatches and a host of great tits on our feeders this morning.

Now there's an opportunity for someone to misconstrue .........

I suppose I was too in all honesty! There are t1ts all over the place in our garden. Unfortunately they are all avian.

Little town garden here, but designed to be as good as space allows.
A good few Tits feed in the Elder, Blue Tits when the Blackflies have infested it feed their young exclusively on them by the look of it.

I fear we're fighting a losing battle in the end though.

All our small birds have a preference for sunflower hearts. Those further down the pecking order, and the small ones such as coal tits and long tailed tits have to make do with the peanuts. The goldfinches have almost abandoned the niger seed.

btw, nice place Brighton - played a lot of (bad) bridge in the Metropole.

I love doing the lawn as it means I don't have to listen to the other half or the kids moaning for a whole hour!
