We take time out to assess the lessons learned over the weekend’s league and cup matches this Monday lunchtime. The battle between Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane for our armband attentions, Arsenal’s current malaise, Romelu Lukaku and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s momentum and Bournemouth’s in-form midfield all find a place on this afternoon’s menu.

Aguero vs Kane could decide our seasons…
Given Aston Villa’s predicament, there was no real surprise to Harry Kane’s brace against the top-flight’s whipping boys on Sunday afternoon. Sergio Aguero’s blank at Carrow Road, on the other hand, proved a major disappointment to those who handed him the armband as the Argentine served up two points to the Spurs man’s 13. Typically, Aguero – when fit – is an obvious armband candidate for most Fantasy managers in any given Gameweek but Kane is looking more than a match for the City striker right now. Getting that captaincy call correct in any given Gameweeks is proving trickier than ever as both sides attempt to finish the season with a flourish.

City need Toure’s goal power…
Back in the goals in last week’s win over Villa, the Ivorian’s heel injury absence in the centre of the park derailed City’s title tilt at the weekend. The Chilean kept faith in last week’s 4-4-2 formation, with Wilfried Bony alongside Sergio Aguero up top, but, somewhat tellingly, City’s four midfield starters at Carrow Road had scored a mere three league goals between them all season. If Manuel Pellegrini’s men are to build momentum over the run-in, Toure’s roaming runs forward from the centre of the park looks vital – encouragingly for City, the Ivorian returned to training today and has been passed fit for the midweek Champions League encounter with Kiev.

Steadfast Norwich might just grind their way to safety…
Having shipped 12 goals in their previous four home matches, the Canaries’ resilient rearguard display against City may yet see them steer clear of relegation. Alex Neil’s men welcome both Sunderland and Newcastle to Carrow Road in the next four – proverbial six-pointers against relegation rivals that could prove decisive to their survival bid. With clashes against West Brom, Palace and Watford also to follow in the next five, those Fantasy managers who have already played their second wildcard could turn to the the likes of Timm Klose and Russell Martin as double Gameweek enablers.

Arsenal have us all worried…
Yesterday’s 2-1 cup loss to Watford means that the Gunners have managed a single victory in their last seven in all competitions – an FA Cup replay over Championship outfit Hull. Arsene Wenger’s side still have the fixtures to flourish but with their morale dropping by the week, can they arrest their current malaise? With Alexis Sanchez looking a shadow of his former self and Olivier Giroud scoring in just one of his last 12 league appearances, the Emirates side’s lack of cutting edge may even see some contemplate a transfer out for Mesut Ozil as they stumble over the finishing line.

The Cherries midfield is ripe for picking….
A 3-2 win over Swansea has all but secured Bournemouth’s top-flight survival. The Cherries’ recent surge in form has coincided with the return of Max Gradel and Josh King from injury, with Eddie Howe’s decision to switch to 4-4-1-1 earning his side three wins and a draw in their last four fixtures. Gradel’s goal and assist against the Swans backed up his underlying stats, whilst the form of King (two goals and an assist in two) and Matt Ritchie (four assists in three) suggests the Dean Court club will have plenty to offer for the run-in and the following campaign, as Howe’s charges become more accustomed to life in the top-flight.

Lukaku is going to sky rocket…
Having bullied the Chelsea defence into submission last weekend, the Everton striker is approaching the final few months of 2015/16 in fine form. The Toffees’ 2-0 win and resultant progress to the FA Cup semi-finals means that they now have a trio of fixtures to be rescheduled over the remainder of the season, alerting Fantasy managers to their points potential. Lukaku, undoubtedly, is their prime pick and with the likes of Spurs and Leicester both devoid of a double, we can expect a major bandwagon for the Belgian once those matches are handed a new date.

Even Robles will be a hot property…
At the other end of the pitch, the Toffees’ stopper also looks set for significant investment due to their schedule. Confirmed as Everton’s keeper for cup competitions by Roberto Martinez earlier in the season, Robles seems to have usurped Tim Howard as the permanent number one and has started each of the last five league outings. Prior to their 3-2 home loss to West Ham – where they were reduced to ten men – the Merseysiders had conceded just twice in four with the Spaniard between the sticks and, at a price of 4.3, he looks an obvious target for wildcarders to pinpoint.

Sigurdsson is as good as ever…
After a sluggish start to the campaign, the Swansea playmaker has served a timely reminder of his Fantasy talents. Overshadowed by Andre Ayew for the majority of the season, Sigurdsson is now just two points behind the Ghanaian after bagging his ninth goal of 2015/16 in Saturday’s narrow loss at Bournemouth. Sigurdsson has now served up seven goals and an assist in his last 11 league outings and with a win over Villa this weekend potentially securing the Swans’ survival, he looks well positioned to maintain that momentum.

I made the mistake of doing Yaya to Silva for free, rather than Yaya and Iggy to Siggy and Kane for an effect -12 (hit + 2 potential DGW'ers) this GW.

I am now in a similar situation, if the DGW announcements don't come to my rescue. Is it worth doing Silva and Iggy to Siggy and Kane for an effect -12 (hit + 2 potential DGW'ers) this GW ?

    Foster
    Kompany, Toby, Williams
    Ozil, Payet, Silva, Mahrez
    Kun, Vardy, Iggy

    Butland, Alli, VVD, Huth

I'm not planning to WC until GW36, so if I sold two potential DGW34 players, it would cost me two hits to get back to the same number of DGW'ers as I currently have.

If the match goes into GW37, the plan will be to

              WC GW33,
              BB GW34 for 15 DGW'ers,
              TC GW35 with 11 DGW'ers,

              If it's in GW34, I will

              TC GW34 with 11 DGW'ers,
              WC GW36
              BB GW37 for 15 DGW'ers,

                The GW37 scenario should be

                WC GW33,
                BB GW34 for 15 DGW'ers,
                TC GW37 with 11 DGW'ers

    The Single Gameweek 34 punishers.

We know there will be plenty of double fixture action in GWK 34, we don't know which teams will be involved yet.

But one other thing we do know is that there will be some single Gameweek teams that week ready to punish those managers who ditch them for double Gameweek assets.

Here's the key contenders that we are sure to regret dumping.

    GWK 34 singletons

Swansea away to Newcastle. If Benitez doesn't sort out the Magpies defence Sigurdsson looks a shoo-in to embarrass those who ditched him

Tottenham away to Stoke. With Alli's away form he is ready to dish out the punishment. Kane too on his recent form. Plus there's WBA in GWK 35 for Spurs so it could be a double whammy of pain for those who shunned this pair.

Leicester home to West Ham - potential banana skin, potential egg on face for Mahrez ditchers in GWK 34.

Which single gameweek players are you planning to ditch? Which are you planning to hold onto at all costs. Is it worth clinging onto Kane perhaps?

Very well mentioned, Jonty. I think striking the balance is the key to DGW planning and success.

Personally, I just can't entertain the possibility of dropping Mahrez. He has proved his worth ever since GW1 and those fixtures still look brilliant despite the lack of a Leicester DGW. As you said on the ScoutCast, not having him can ruin your GW and mini-league progress due to his mammoth ownership.

As far as Spurs go, Ali's away form scares me greatly so I'd be tempted to keep both and ship out Spurs defense cover. Kane when he's in form is impossible not to own so he's staying.

The key for me is whether to keep Vardy or not. Its very difficult to justify having 3 Foxes and 2 Spurs in these DGWs. Jamie might have to step aside.

Also depends on whether the dgwks offers lots of striking options.

Given most will have Aguero there is only two slots up for grabs. Is double Defoe, double Rondon better than single Kane? Probably not.

The other slot goes to Lukaku.

The handy thing is that Liverpool strikers are pretty much a no go due to rotation making Firmino the best bet there.

Defoe or Rondon, with Lukaku and Aguero does provide a budget means of getting two games and enabling more expensive players in the midfield and defense.

Not agree with the comment above

West Ham are too good team and considering the way they plan - away fixtures suits them, for me Payet would be a better pick than Mahrez or even Vardy than Mahrez

Spurs are good but against Stoke they have always struggle - cannot see Spurs winning it easily

DGW should always be a priority, can never forget the hauls from Defoe , Ivanovic etc. which completely ruined my season because I use to think the same away you are now 🙂

Have to keep GWK 35 in mind though - we may need to keep hold of one or two single gameweekers. Also re Mahrez depends on the money tied up with him and whether we think he can prevail in the final tough run in for the Foxes.

That is where 15 man squad comes in to play 🙂

keep hold of season keepers and play 11 DGW'ers

It is all about planning - if you have 2 FT this week than you can easily get 10-11 DGW'er by GW 34 but again someone good in planning can do it 🙂

I think I can live without all my single gameweek players except for one of Alli or Kane. Away form and just general form too strong. I think even Mahrez may be ditchable - but then I look at all that money tied up in him. Makes me think that I'm pretty certain to keep Alli/Kane and Mahrez and then look to see how many more dgwks I can get in with GWK 35 blanks in mind. Certainly room for a singleton or two.

Kane and Alli are the key ones I think

for example Kane is obviously preferable to say, Defoe, but there's 5m difference in the price

Is he preferable to say Lukaku though?

Alli could be kept as he is easily benchable in 37 if needed but I created something like

        Ozilm Payet, Lingard, Firmino, Milner

That Milner spot could easily be Alli/Mahrez

Not scared to ditch Kane, Siggy and Vahrez. Will most likely get 15 dgw players and use bench boost in gw34. Altough lot depends on possible blanks in gw35.

Players mentioned above. If I decide not to get 15 dgw players I will most likely keep Kane.

There is perhaps a case for doing a Lukaku/kane hokey cokey.

Lukaku GWK 34 double, out for his blank to Kane in GWK 35 (WBA) then back to Lukaku again for perhaps two more doubles.

that's 2 transfers wasted on that swap though and at that point it depends how many other DGWers you need to get for 37

DGW 37 presents a different challenge, in the shape of Aguero

I hear the term 'wasted' with transfers alot. I've struggled to spend a transfer for weeks now...been sitting on two frees for ages. With good planning around wildcard transfers are less of a precious commodity. If Lukaku scores big in GWK 34 and Kane doesn't, then Kane hammers WBA the next week then its not a waste, but an excellent use of a transfer in my books.

            That's fair

I think it depends on how you set up in GW33, so if you have your 14-15 DGWers with say 2x Liverpool (defender + Firmino) and 4 with a blank in 35 (including a keeper) that leaves you with 7 for 37 as a starting point, so only 4 transfers needed to get to a full 11.

so worst came to it, you need a -4 to get to 11 going that route, or you just have 10 + 1 SGWer

Alot depends on Liverpool. With two doubles and a definite game in GWK 35 they are the glue that will hold our wildcard and bench boost plans together. Need three of their players ideally.

but to get 3 it probably means you lose Mahrez and Alli

do you really want to double on that defence? The strikers are off limits

so midfield is where you need to look

if you say you want Payet, Ozil, Firmino, Alli I guess the trade off is you don't get a United attacker.

With our attacking form that's an option, but at 4.3 with AVL, CPL, Lingard looks worth a punt to me

Been thinking about this a bit...

Is there any joy to be had out of a GW32 wildcard with a view to setting your team up for GW34 bench boost...? We will know how the fixtures are going to fall by then and it potentially gives you 2 transfers to use for GW35 when you might be needing to shift a couple of blankers

Yes, rotation (and motivation) is a concern.

I bought Mahrez late so money is no issue when deciding whether or not I should ditch him or not.
Kane, on the other hand, I bought early at 9.2 and as Spurs are in the title race, I don't see myself ditching him for Defoe/Ighalo/Rondon type player.

it' s going to be about how many potential DGW players I would want to keep for 2 or 3 weeks.
For BB there's every chance a benched Leicester or Spurs defender could bring me the same or more points as a DGWer and not do as much damage moving forward into the 2nd DGW.
Also particularly with defenders do clean sheets become more difficult towards the end of the season??

Without seeing the fixtures, right now the only single GWers I'm planning on keeping are Mahrez and Alli. One or both of those could be transferred out after the wild card for a DGW37er, though. Unfortunately, between them and Ozil that leaves me with just two midfield spots to use.

Only Mahrez will stay for me
Keeping Kane will just spoil the rest of the DGW team because of his high price

Obviously waiting for the fixtures but given I have 2FTs I'm currently planning to manage GW 34/35 with them and hold the WC/BB for GW 36/37.

Want to play 3-4-3 so will bench Mahrez GW34 and Payet GW35. As a result, any other attacker without a double 34 and fixture in 35 is out. Kane, Siggy, Vardy and Alli have served me well but I'm chasing someone who's burnt his WC so chances need to be taken!

Tempted by the Kane > Lukaku > Kane switch but it's all on these fixtures really.

Since most of us are planning WC / BB in 33/34 we should add Singletons in GW 34 who can punish us in 33,34 and 35

This is why WCding on GW33 is the best options imo, to avoid all this.
And I don't think fielding 11 DGWers results to higher points.. Players like Mahrez can easily outscore DGWers in a single game. But all depends on forms and fixtures..

Yeah, see, this is the hope that I as a wildcard-less manager am clinging onto. The hope that SGW players will be able to match some of the DGW punts in both DGWs as I won't be able to have 15 DGWers for my BB for example. I think all those that you mention are good calls, and I'm personally planning to keep both Kane and Mahrez.

Most people would achieve the 15 dgwers by wildcarding in gw 33, so it's also that week that we have to think about! That's three weeks that we could be punished by those single gameweekers...

I think the short term allure of 150+ points will drag many into the 15 DGWers. This will be a lovely green for one week, but long term it will hurt your team.

      1 week glory = 15 DGWers
Finishing as high as possible = 12/13 DGWers. Probably still worth a BB.

The number of people I've seen say "WC+BB+TC available, I'm 50k+ so top 10k is possible?!?" will probably go with 1 week glory, and they will get close to top 10k but will fall away by the close of GW38.

        Liverpool are consistently inconsistent

I'd prefer keeping one of Delli Alli or Kane, considering Lukaku is a must and Leicester has awesome fixtures

It is not about who is consistent it is all about who is most likely will returns most points during the phase

Vardy - Aguero - Lukaku (for me)

the popular choice is Vardy. I see some appeal. But I also see Trollkaku against an Arsenal Defense and a United defense while Vardy will be playing Palace and Sunderland in 2 of the next 3. So..

trust the Arsenal defence much. they seem like a team capitulating, who will as usual just barely squeeze into the top 4. United have bee shaky at best too.

but I see your point with Vardy up against Palace and Sunderland

Unreal cleared up with Benteke and Lukaku whilst many were using a power 5 and Pog. Fun season. Those two were heavily ignored back then.

I was never and advocate of the Power 5 (wasn't that clown Fellaini part of that)?

Although I do find myself now with 5 good MFs and a benching headache due to this week blank GW

              DOH !

Fellaini was played in his correct position in the hole/up front back then! Was scoring for fun 🙂 He's not a holding mid - LvG is mental for playing him there.

Got 5 big'uns atm too. Silva on the bench. Hopefully two frees next week will sort that out.

                  Yeah, me too fella

Seems odd to bench Silva - but when you got Siggy, Mahrez, Ozil and Alli he has to give way. Well, for next GW anyway.

If being risk adverse, he has less ownership too so less likely to hurt...

Firmino gets a call up to the Brazilian national team as Kaka gets injured, otherwise could have been a nice rest for Bobby during the international break.

Not sure if he's a starter and don't really care! More interested in my FPL asset being rested rather than flying to the other side of the world for a friendly and risking an injury!

Could do with some help please. 2 free transfers and 1.3 ITB, need to start thinking about the DGW players. Gosling needs to go, is it worth bringing in Lennon for him? Also a DGW GK to replace Hennessey?

Wonder how many first-time 10kers there will be this year. With more and more people on this site as well as other sites focusing on FPL, the earlier trends of easy top10k rank will be getting harder and harder each year because the playing field is more level now. The elite players may not remain so anymore.

If I finish in the top 10k I will be a first timer. This is my 3rd full season of FPL (you'll see my history goes back further than that but being from Los Angeles and not knowing of these sites, I always stopped logging in by Halloween) and my previous two finishes were 35k and 30k.

            Shooting for a 3 digit rank! 😀

Good luck. I have played for 7 years now but only discovered this site for the first time this season. Last year was 56k. Now at 40k and hoping to reach 10k.
