Our usual Friday members article comes around now as we analyse the captaincy conundrum ahead of the final double Gameweek of 2016/17. We take a delve into the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Double Gameweek 37 understandably dominates our selection, with nine of the top ten in the Captain Poll facing a couple of fixtures.

With a goal or assist in seven of his last ten, Dimitri Payet boasts a healthy 34% of the votes cast. The popular Frenchman has a higher ownership (33%) than any double Gameweek player ahead of home clashes against Swansea (one away clean sheet all season) and a United defence with two shut-outs in their last 11 road trips.

Eden Hazard just edges Andy Carroll in the tussle for second position by 13% to 12%. The Chelsea winger’s three goals and six bonus points in two outings since returning from injury has piqued our interest ahead of trips to Sunderland and Liverpool.

Finally free from his injury worries, the 6.5-priced Carroll offers a tempting route into an attack that’s scored at least twice in each of their previous seven. The big Geordie has chipped in with six goals and an assist in the Hammers’ last six fixtures and looks a viable double-up option along with Payet.

United’s Anthony Martial is backed by 8% to do the business away to Norwich and West Ham. The Frenchman has notched five times in ten outings across all competitions and faces a couple of unconvincing defences – the Canaries have one clean sheet in their previous at Carrow Road, whilst the Hammers’ 3-0 win at West Brom earned them a first shut-out in seven.

Just 7% are willing to back 14-goal Jermain Defoe as Sunderland host Chelsea and Everton. Big Sam will take solace in their visitors’ defensive data as he looks to secure survival – Guus Hiddink’s side have one clean sheet in 11, whilst the Toffees’ backline has been breached in all but one of their previous ten.

Five goals and an assist in seven highlights Daniel Sturridge’s form yet with Jurgen Klopp’s team sheets proving a huge source of frustration, just 5% are willing to roll the dice for Liverpool’s home matches against Watford (one clean sheet in nine road trips) and Chelsea. After playing virtually every minute against Villarreal last night, though, there are still concerns over his minutes in light of the Reds’ progress to the Europa League final.

Further down, the likes of Robbie Brady, Diego Costa and Mark Noble are amongst a host of differentials hovering around the 2% mark.

Are the current rankings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

We kick off by breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches in order to shed a little more light on the situation.

    Who's more likely to start both games, Moreno or Clyne? or neither?

        Their defensive rotation has burned me the last few weeks, but i'm left with 2 Liverpool and 2 Arsenal to pick from. Ideally both start both games, but that's not going to happen is it.

    Off topic but I have a £200 wager with a friend of mine that I can't do 50 press ups in a month from now ( I can currently do 13 at a push)

    I'm 6ft 2, weigh 17 stone and have pretty much always had weak/puny biceps...any fitness gurus with any tips as to how I can get there?

      Well first of all, press ups are chest muscles, not biceps!

      So work your chest

        But yeah press ups and some dumbell excercises every other day. You want to eat over 2,500 calories and keep your protein instake at 1.5g per 1lb of bodyweight. This will build the muscles and give you recovery time.

      Keep it structured, keep disciplined. Twice a day

      Week 1: Day 1-3 = 15 press ups
      Week 1: Day 4-7 = 20 press ups
      Week 2: Day 1-3 = 25 press ups
      Week 2: Day 4-7 = 30 press ups
      Week 3: Day 1-3 = 35 press ups
      Week 3: Day 4-7 = 40 press ups
      Week 4: Day 1-3 = 45 press ups
      Week 4: Day 4-7 = 50 press ups

      Watch videos to learn how to do a proper press up, get the technique right and it'll be easier to do lots at a time.

      As a former marine I'd say you have little chance of building enough muscle and shedding fat to allow your body to do 50 press ups in 1 month.

    FROGGY FIVE PREDICTION COMPETITION - GW37 A+B

    Welcome to the Froggy Five Competition!

    INSTRUCTIONS

    In this competition you enter 5 predictions for ANY 5 fixtures in the upcoming gameweek. For Example for GW28 -

    Norwich 1-3 Chelsea
    West Ham 2-2 Tottenham
    Liverpool 1-1 Man City
    Arsenal 3-0 Swansea
    Sunderland 2-1 Crystal Palace

    SCORING

    For every correct result (win/lose/draw) you will gain 10 points. For every exact result (ie 3-1) you will gain 50 points! Every week there will be a 'joker' match for which double points will be scored if you get a correct result or score. The joker is included as 1 of your 5 predictions.

    Your scores will then be totalled up and put into a league table like this:

    1st for the week: 3 points
    2nd - 5th: 2 points
    6th - 10th: 1 point

    Any ties will be settled with performance in the Joker match.

    Anyone who scores 200 points or more in a week will score 1 bonus point.

    RULES

    You may only have 1 submission that is a direct reply to the post to be entered and the deadline for this week (GW37) is 11:45 7 May. Any sensible abbreviations of team names are allowed in submissions ie. Crystal Palace, CPL, Palace.

    Double Gameweek fixtures will be allocated at my discretion.

    Originally this competition will be played purely for pride and enjoyment however if enough people play then I will enquire about potential membership/ money prizes for next season!

    Results will be posted on the next edition of the competition.

    Should I TC or play Bench Boost?

    ROBLES (Lloris)
    SMALLING, CRESSWELL, BELLERIN (Morgan, Fuchs)
    PAYET, HAZARD, Townsend, Sanchez (Iwobi)
    CARROLL, DEFOE, COSTA

    I'm 8 points down on my ML and could go first for the 1st time this season. Head says TC one of my strikers (who!) for the DGW but my heart is saying save it for Sanchez vs Villa next week.

    Ideas much appreciated!

      Bench boost always more likely to get you points. You have the players for it. TC on Sanchez vs Villa next week.

    After chasing the whole season, I finally climbed to the top of my ML last week. Only have a small lead though, so need to make the most of my FTs.

    Robles
    Smalling, Fuchs, Bellerin
    Payet(TC), Lanzini, Mahrez, Coutinho
    Aguero, Kane, Defoe

    Darlow, Ozil, Gabriel, Sakho

    2FTs, £4.2m in the bank

    I'm thinking my priority is Sakho -> Cresswell/PVA, dropping Bellerin to the bench. But I'm also considering Coutinho -> Hazard.

    So, what combo of the following would you do?
    1) Sakho -> Cresswell
    2) Sakho -> PVA
    3) Something else

    a) Coutinho -> Hazard
    b) Something else
    c) Save FT

    What's the best option (or anything better - 1 especially leaves me with 4+M itb)?

    1. Sakho+KDB+Kane -> Smalling+Payet+Defoe -4
    2. Sakho+Lanzini+Kane -> Cresswell+Payet+Defoe -4

    Current team is
    DDG Robles
    Bellerin Gabriel Sakho Fuchs kaboul
    KDB Sanchez Mahrez Firmino Lanzini
    Kane Aguero Carroll
    2FT 0itb

    Last advice I'll need this season, all replies welcome and appreciated! :]

    Going for a -4 hit here to get Otamendi out. Price no issue and I can't see any need to save money because there's no big hitters that I don't own that I want for GW38.

    Currently on PVA?
    Would look at Norwich but less inclined with Klose out.
    Already own DDG and Rojo so not really looking at Smalling (plus I would like to see the Hammers pass them).

    Thanks.

    Hello everyone, greetings from Norway! Which transfer(s) do you think I should prioritize?

    Current team:
    DDG
    Bellerin - Simpson - PVA*
    Sanchez - Mahrez - Payet* (TC) - Lanzini*
    Aguero - Kane - Carroll*

    Robles - KDB - Gabriel - Fosu-Mensah*

    What do you think? I'm thinking one or two of these:
    1. Aguero - Defoe
    2. Aguero - Costa
    3. Aguero - Deeney
    4. KDB - Hazard
    5. Mahrez - Fabregas
    6. Bellerin - Smalling

    Considering doing three transfers this week (-8):

    Simpson --> Cresswell
    Coutinho --> Hazard
    Kane --> Carroll

    Problem is that it leaves me with nobody to bench from my attackers:

    Hazard, Payet, Milner, Sanchez, Townsend
    Carroll, Defoe, Aguero

    I guess I would have to bench Sanchez in this scenario? Is this a good idea?
