Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Sunderland.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the Wearsiders’ team statistics under Sam Allardyce and compare them to both the rest of the Premier League and the first eight Gameweeks prior to the departure of Dick Advocaat. After that, we then delve into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the season ahead.

After picking up three points – thanks to a trio of draws – in the opening eight Gameweeks, Advocaat’s decision to quit the club saw Big Sam appointed at the helm. The former West Ham boss took a while to steady the ship, though, and helped stave off the threat of relegation by embarking on a run that saw his side lose just twice in the final 14 league fixtures to finish two points ahead of the drop zone.

Didn't really know exactly what you guys were getting at regarding the zoom.
Ive just started making a team and its really quite silly. Just clicked on transfers and the strikers are down by the logos at the bottom of the page. What is the advantage to that?
    Its actually quite poor.

What do you expect from 'Volunteers' who give their time for free where they're not collecting for concern.
The prizes too are appalling when you consider some fellas agent bringing a player from Italy over to the wealthiest league in the world gets 20m, and we get a pair of match tickets or whatever.

This will be my tenth season playing FPL and I have rarely been able to make a strong start. The only one I can remember in recent history is 2009-2010 because as a Chelsea fan I believed they would win the title and I went all in with Drogba, Lampard and Terry since GW1. This is still my best ever season with a rank of 7k. I am used to a strong finish and I usually finish in the 30-50k rank. I know some veterans like Jonty have this problem as well. What is the key to starting strong? Obviously luck is involved and you have to pick the right players but this is too general. There has to be a strategy employed by those who consistently start strong. I hope they can shed some light to it 🙂

Supporting the team that wins the title obviously is a key factor as it was for me in 2009-2010 and with Anday Goddard last year with Leceister. Any other tips?

They key is to have a balanced team and players of all value brackets distributed nicely.
for example, if you go with all 8-10m mids and a lukaku and then suddenly aguero/ibra bursts, youll have to make 2/(probably 3) changes to get your team going.

the better stragety is to have 2/3 spots reserved for a premium mid and one for a premium forward so that you can replace/downgrade anyone and get the bandwagons quickly

I currently have 2 premium forwards and1 premium mids. I am thinking Aguero is a must and Ibra is from a class of players you don't want to risk not having. If he flops for the first few weeks, he is easily downgradable. Is this flexible?

The problem I'm having with Ibra is he unbalances the team, I can't have that early doors, I think I have solid nailed players in my team without.

Who do you have? I currently don't have any Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs,Leceister attacking cover and Cesc from Chelsea. I am not liking it at all. I have both Miki and Ibra. Is that too many eggs in 1 basket?

It's all down to luck. The first few week are a lottery. Obviously if you do the research and plan ahead you'll finish in the top 50k with no problem.
Most will captain Aguero in GW1, there's a chance he won't play due to a extended holiday, but even if he does, it doesn't anything. He blanked so many times vs the smaller teams last season. You've got to have a big differential and a bold Captain choice GW1 to get ahead of the pack.

But if he explodes and you don't have him, you are already screwed so early on. Keep in mind Pep teams bully the small teams and score a lot of goals. I can see a 4-0 win and Kun will be involved.

I dont think a bold captain choice is the way to get ahead early but rather picking the 5.5-6.5 midfielder(s) who starts strong. Think Mahrez last year and siggy the year before that. Also, jumping on the bandwagons as early as GW2. And a lot of luck as well.

Is it important to disregard the previous season completely when it comes to form? Especially with surprise overachievers and traditional relegation battlers?

Do you keep most of the team from the traditional top 8 and avoid risks until the first few weeks pass and then jump on the wagons that look like they will continue?

      3 - 1.5ks and under.
For me it's flexibility in the price range and moving fast as trends/players merge, got my highest ever finish last year without being a member(sorry) too by doing my own research granted that led me to a TC Caroll fail!
But yea your right you need a good start for sure.

That's hard I've been down both roads before, Mahrez last season was the good, Sahko/Bony not so good.
You can afford a mistake or two and over a season even a 55% (c) success rate but you just gotta know when to act, ie sell/buy, if I'm honest I surround myself with good advice on here, base my decisions on logic and then carry them out-if I see I'm wrong I try not to be stubborn and rectify my mistakes.

So... GW8 has proven a valuable source of points in recent years.. With Tadic and Aguero exploding to great effect in that GW.

This year, in GW8, there are a few tasty fixtures..

    Bournemouth v Hull
    Arsenal v Swansea
    Southampton v Burnley
    Man City v Everton

I'd recommend building towards having 3 from each of those four home teams.

I'm taking a step back on Hazard.

Yes he's a cracking player, but I always found him to be an unreliable scorer, and he was never essential even before last season. Since then, he's had an absolutely rotten season and is now going to be playing fora new manager in an unknown position in an unknown system.

Do we really want to be spending 10 % of our hard-earned budgets on him with no idea how he or Chelsea will perform?

            Martial, Silva, 7.5, Lamela, 4.5

last season was a disaster for chelsea, but the quality of Hazard cannot be neglected. he could play a bad game and still pop up with goals/assists as everything in Chelsea seems to go through him.

Also, Conte mentioned that he sees potential in hazard to be the next messi/ronaldo. So I guess he would be a striker/10 in 3-5-2, not a wingback for sure.

Hazard's a wait and see for me until the formation concerns settle. Conte has been talking up Loftus Cheek and treating him as a striker rather than a midfielder as well. Chelsea as an attacking source of points atm is pretty much unknown. Only player I'm seriously considering to start with is Azpilicueta unless Costa is sold.

I'm extremely intrigued to see what'll transpire with regards to Soton's attacking assets such as Austin (6.5m), Long(6.5m), JRod(6.5m) , Redmond (6m) and Tadic(7.5m). A nailed-on attacking asset from that lot with surely prove decent value.
I think the same can be said regarding the midfielders of Everton such as Mirallas (6.5mill), Deulofeu (6.5mill), and Barkley (7.5mill).

I have my conversations regarding Palace midfielders unless they do sign Benteke. If they do sign him, I'd go for Benteke from that lot as he'd be great value due to the great amount of chance creators in that attacking force.

Thoughts on this 1st draft? Happy with most of it

    Valdes/ Foster
    Shaw/ Baines/ Terry/ (Two of Evans/ Friend/ CRY)*
    Martial/ Firmino/ Willian/ Tadic/ Capoue*
    Aguero/ Lukaku/ Rhodes*

    * Open to change

Rhodes might become Negredo if he's cheap at the expense of a defender.

I am not sure about the Valdes pick, as Guzan is also joining Middlesbrough for free, so more competition for him.

Capoue is a good pick, even I have him don't change.
Rhodes not a good pick, Middlesbrough is not known for scoring goals.

do we NEED a 10m(ish) mid

    Not sure on Hazard tbh

Payet may not start the season due to Euros

    Sanchez is injured

That only leaves KDB. He could do well I guess, but do I want to pay 10.5 for a mid I will never captain when Kun is fit

But if one does start firing we need to be able to move onto them quickly

I reckon it would take all of them a little time to adjust

Hazard - New system, New manager, played in Euros

KDB - New System, New manager, played in Euros, looked exhausted in Euros

Sanchez - Wenger likes to ease in players, played in Copa America
