Earlier this month, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was launched for the campaign ahead. After winning the League of Leagues for each of the last three seasons, we’re now looking to defend our crown in 2016/17.

What’s more, Sky Sports have kindly pledged £1,000 to the manager who finishes top of our league. Win that, and you might just be in line to claim an even bigger prize.

We’re proud to say that the Fantasy Football Scout league has supplied the winner of the overall Sky Sports game in each of the last two seasons – for some handy research, those looking to get involved should check out this interview with 2015/16 winner Alan Wood from earlier in the summer.

In an incredible 2015/16, Alan emerged victorious with a 100+ points winning margin over his nearest challenger and collected £20,000 for his season’s work.

This time around, the top prize is £25,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick off on August 13.

For those playing the Sky Sports game, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8183867.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2016/17. We take a look at the main implications below.

Captains

Undoubtedly the biggest change to the Sky Sports game is the new captain rule:

  • Captain changes must be made before each Match Day deadline to score points for your team. This means managers can make unlimited captain changes in a Game Week.
  • Throughout the 2016/17 season, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football Game Weeks will run from Friday to Thursday.

Out goes a single tactical armband swap, with Sky Sports Fantasy managers now afforded unlimited changes in a round of fixtures. Similar to how we have previously made transfers in the middle of a Gameweek, each captain selection must be finalised prior to each Match Day deadline.

Last season’s Thursday night deadline has been changed to move into line with the new batch of Friday evening fixtures.

Essentially, then, having a captain for each Match Day is far easier to achieve and the planning element of the game will now centre on ensuring we have sufficient armband coverage in any given Gameweek. Just like last season, we expect transfers to prove key to this strategy.

Bonus Points

Further reading on the new scoring system can be found here, though we’ll go through the main changes one-by-one below.

Bonus Points – Tier 1 (+2 points for each)
5 saves made (GK only)
3 tackles won (All)
60 completed passes (All)
3 shots on target (All)

Bonus Points – Tier 2 (+3 points for each)
7+ saves made (GK only)
5+ tackles won (All)
70+ completed passes (All)
5+ shots on target (All)

The Tier 2 Bonus section is new for this season, as is the shots on target section in Tier 1. Jonty’s recent community article, which assessed the new implications, is worth swatting up on.

The main difference here is that a player needs to make three successful tackles to earn +2 points this term, whereas he was required to register four last season. This could be a valuable source of points for full-backs and central midfielders in the main. Taking the time to delve into our members data on offer could reward the shrewd manager here.

Scoring

  • Goalkeepers and defenders now qualify for a clean sheet after a minimum of 60 minutes rather than 75.

This rule change could be quite influential and bring the Sky Sports game in line with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ruling on pitch time required to earn a shut-out. Those defenders prone to early substitutions are now slightly more appealing options again.

  • Goalkeepers are now awarded +7 points for a clean sheet instead of +5.

Combining a premium keeper in a defensively sound team who also makes a lot of saves seems the best way to exploit this new scoring system, particularly when you consider the relatively low price of the premium keepers compared to the premium defenders (who still receive only +5 for a clean sheet).

  • Penalty saves are now worth +5 instead of +3.

The likes of Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who made more spot-kick stops (three) than any keeper in 2015/16 and West Ham number one Adrian (who has registered more penalty saves (five) than any other keeper in the last two seasons) will likely benefit from this change.

  • Defenders now get +7 and Midfielders +6 for goals scored, forwards remain on +5.

All three classifications earned five points apiece last year, so the improvement certainly smiles kinder on the defenders.

Patrick van Aanholt led the way for goals scored amongst defenders in 2015/16, with six to his name, which would have earned him an extra 12 points under the new rule. Palace’s Scott Dann, with five goals, would have been the only other defender to earn at least ten more points from this ruling.

Eight midfielders would have earned at least ten points more in 2015/16. In saying that, only two Sky Sports midfielders (Riyad Mahrez, with 17, and Andre Ayew, with 12) were at least on a par with Van Aanholt’s tally of 12, with Alexis Sanchez (13 goals) classified as a forward.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out Player Price List analysis articles, breaking down the options position by position and offering insight into each player’s potential.

We’ve also set up a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

How vital would KDB and Hazard be? had them both but attack was to weak and removed them both.

    Shaw Azpi Lenihan Taylor Williams
    Ayew Alli Coutinho Townsend/Mirallas Hojbjerg
    Lukaku Kun Costa

Neither are essential. KdB a safer pick but Hazard looked revitalised towards the back end of the season and Euros.

Currently got both but I have now decided I want Mahrez as well.

KDB has very good prospects in my opinion. Firstly he will have the first preseason with team mates, Pep system should also be well suited to him and he had 6 months to adjust to the league. I expect big things from him. So much so, that I believe that he will be a sufficient cover for Aguero, especially with that price difference.

Hazard for me is an enigma. He played a very good Euro, but I don't see him prosper in Chelsea's new system, as he will be moved back in the field and have more defensive tasks.

Well I don't know to be honest. I believe most of them came back from the holidays didn't they. Last game they played was almost a month ago. He surely worked on a personal program prepared by Pep. But even if he comes today it is still better than when he joined the club on Tuesday mid sesason and started in first 11 on saturday.

Double City is a big risk. Especially since they are your most expensive players. What if City starts slow and for example Chelsea or Spurs start strong? You'll be losing points all over the place.

    Crystal Palace 1⃣️-0⃣️ Colchester

    ⭐ players: Dann, Mutch, Puncheon,

    Notes
    - Palace look a lot more comfortable playing 3-5-2 than in their other games; we can probably expect this at times in the league, maybe with an OOP defender in Souare or Fryers.
    - The 3 centre backs worked a lot better, especially Delaney who was very suspect last game. Ward coming in for Kelly has been a major improvement and Tomkins could even come in and push Ward up to RWB instead of Mutch. Either way their defence is getting better (slowly)
    - Puncheon and Townsend (who was second striker again) worked very hard all through the game, Bolasie looked very sloppy at times and greedy.
    - Palace could do with a new striker and it’s screaming out to be Benteke in my opinion. Would fit the system perfectly as they lack presence up top.
    - Second half was a huge let-down with literally no big chances. Palace focused on defending and absorbing heavy pressure from Colchester. Gave the reserves a run out as time went on.

Crystal Palace 1st half (3-5-2): McCarthy; Delaney, Ward, Dann; Mutch, Boateng, Puncheon, Bolasie, Fryers; Townsend, Wickham.

5’’ Chance for Colchester as Dann gets in a good block in front of goal to deny the opposition.
10’’ Puncheon controls the ball with his chest and lays it on for Mutch on the edge of the penalty area where he curls it into the top right corner with a beautiful finish. ⚽
21’’ Bolasie leads a counter attack from a Colchester corner and gets a dangerous cross to Townsend at the back post. He tries to find his teammate in the centre but gets a corner for his effort.
23’’ McCarthy comes to punch a corner away but misses it. The Colchester player gets a header that hit the post. The rebound is struck and cleared off the line by Puncheon. Close call there for Palace!
31’’ Fryers hits a long shot that goes a yard or two wide.
36’’ McCarthy makes his first save of the game and holds as a ball is hit straight towards him. ♜

Crystal Palace 2nd half (3-5-2): McCarthy; Delaney, Ward, Dann; Mutch, Boateng, Puncheon, Bolasie, Fryers; Townsend, Campbell.

It changed at times throughout the game, I'll concede that much. The defence was never settled because Colchester put so much pressure on them.

Townsend was second striker to Wickham, more of a support striker, sometimes dropping out right to allow Mutch to cut inside centrally.

There are still rumours that Costa might leave the team. But even if does not, both are gonna often play together and split striker points between them. That being said I have Bats in my team, I have watched him a few times and he is really one that can explode into a goal machine. Especially if Chelsea as a team do good.

If Arnautovic goes to Everton that sorts out the 7.5m conundrum

But adds a dilemma to the set piece situation and potentially lowers the appeal of Baines....

Ayew, Tadic, Barkley are all 7.5m and Barkley is far too inconsistent.

Deulofeu, Townsend and Bolasie are less than 7.5m so irrelevant to my post.

He's far superior to Mirallas (who would be his competition presumably)

Lennon and Deulofeu for the RW unless Koeman wants inside forwards on both sides. Either way Arnie plays left and starts imo.

picked arny for a few weeks last season but not his biggest fan by any stretch - and as koeman is now the everton manager i'm giving their players a wide berth.

Just too many uncertainties to even begin any serious tinkering yet. 2 weeks before I start looking at it I reckon.

I have a rough idea what I want to do but one or two potential moves will affect the detail quite a bit. Specially if Benteke and/or Bony goes to a club where they will be 1st choice.

As it stands I don't like any sub-7m strikers really. If I had to decide now then Rooney would be my 3rd forward but that would mean no midfielders over 8.5m. Bony or Benteke at 7.5m would make a big difference.

At the moment I'd be starting with Aguero, Costa, Rooney. But I'm not even sure Costa will still be there.

I don't think 4-4-2 would negatively affect him. More likely to help him in my view.

In a pretty similar situation.. know exactly how i want to distribute the funds just a little early to be certain on the personnel with the exception of one or two

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

The thing with 'fund distribution' is you have to take player options into account. There are lots of mids at 7.5m or less that I'd be happy to start with and others at 8.5m that are premiums in my view. In other words I see plenty of value in midfield.

I don't see the same value among the forwards. Doubtless one of them - Hernandez, Gray, Long, Negredo, Wilson, Deeney, Carroll, Origi - will emerge as a good 3rd striker. But there's not a one of them I'd be happy to start the season with.

As a result, if I were deciding now I'd be spending less than usual on mids and more on forwards.

        1. KingNidge
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Totally agree the 7.5 category is very strong especially and i'll likely go no lower than that for my 4th mid.. potentially Deulofeu at 6.5 he would be the only one in that bracket would tempt me..
Aguero is also a little expensive for my liking so that will give me a bit extra to play with

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

No Aguero... well that would make things easier for sure.

I'm not one of those who wants Aguero at all costs and at all times, I often delay bringing him back after injury for example. It's a matter of timing it right. But I haven't seriously considered no Aguero to start the season unless he's unfit. Sunderland (h) is too good of a fixture and I'd want to captain him I think.

Yep timing is key.. i feel can be stronger across the board without and look to re assess on the WC which will likely be played early.. don't get me wrong it's a nice fixture just don't buy the whole must have nonsense that is spread around here

                    Pretty simple really.

First of all, BB compromises the wildcard if you use the wildcard to set up for it. The wildcard is inherently more valuable than BB so that makes no sense. Essentially, I want to wildcard in or after a DGW, not before it just to set up BB.

Second, BB is easiest to set up with a wildcard.

The way to resolve that contradiction is to BB in GW1 (effectively after a wildcard). I'll be taking my first actual wildcard after GW3 so I will be compromising nothing by setting up for BB.

That's my strategic plan anyway, Or part of it at least. 🙂

          Costa to AM
          Lukaku to Chelsea
          Bony to Everton

I have no idea where he could go.

Too expensive for the teams that would have him.

this. Everton paid £30mish and he's improved since.

Is there rumours that Bony is heading somewhere? Could really bang some goals if only would get some minutes

There have been some. City are reportedly willing to sell, Swansea and Everton are reportedly interested. In Everton's case it would probably only be if Lukaku leaves.

Pretty much exact same team apart from I have
      Williams> Taylor
      Townsend> hazard
Lukaku> 6.5 on long at the moment
Are you planning an early WC?

Does "The treaty of Arnautovic" have him playing as striker when, and if, Lukaku leaves?

    Best 5.5m defender?
I have De Gea so am wary about Shaw.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

      Hmmm...

Dann, VVD and Coleman look attractive to me for the first weeks of the season. Worthwhile fixtures and all have the attack threat you want from a 5.5 defender.

VVD for me, 3 goals but hit woodwork 5 times last season, weeks 1,3 an 5 are superb fixtures
