Burnley’s Andre Gray bags a fifth goal of the summer. Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley net again for Everton, whilst Spurs hand a debut to both their pre-season signings in a 2-1 loss to Juventus.

Bolton 1 Burnley 2

Another day, another Andre Gray goal, as the striker netted for the fifth time in pre-season in Burnley’s narrow win over their Lancashire rivals.

Gray, priced at 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League, is rapidly becoming a great example of the form v fixtures debate. He is currently in nearly 10% of FPL squads even though Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester are among Burnley’s first five opponents.

The striker converted a penalty that he earned himself before Bolton hit back and continued to threaten, only for Josh Ginnelly to win it for the Clarets with a late strike.

Strikers Ashley Barnes and Lukas Jutkiewicz, who both suffered hamstring tweaks at the weekend, missed out, as did David Jones and Fredrik Ulvestad. As a result, Dan Agyei was handed a first senior start up front.

After the match, Clarets boss Sean Dyche issued some mixed news on Barnes and Jutkiewicz’ injuries:

“Ashley is unfortunately going to be a bit longer than we hoped. We are not sure exactly how long yet but he’s tweaked a hamstring muscle. The good news is it’s not in the belly of the hamstring, but we are hoping it will settle down quickly. He got off quickly (at Bradford), which is helpful, and Lukas’s is just common sense and a bit of tightness. His (injury) is very minor and he trained on grass on Tuesday and will be training the rest of the week.”

Burnley XI: Heaton (Robinson, 66); Lowton (Darikwa, 71), Keane (Mee, 45), Tarkowski (K. Long, 71), Ward (Lafferty, 66); Arfield (Jackson, 81), O’Neill, Marney (Boyd, 59), Kightly (Ginnelly, 81); Agyei (Hennings, 66), Gray (C. Long, 45).

MK Dons 1 Everton 3

Gerard Deulofeu scored one goal and set up another as Everton continued their Ronald Koeman learning curve.

With Romelu Lukaku only just back in training – and his Everton future still in doubt – the young Spaniard was again fielded as a “false nine” and seemed to take a real liking to Koeman’s desire for quick, early balls forward and a pressing game high up the pitch.

That pressure forced a defensive error that Deulofeu capitalised on for the first goal before he played in Ross Barkley for the second.

Muhamed Besic rounded off the Everton scoring late on from an Aiden McGeady assist.

Martin Stekelenburg was preferred to Joel Robles in goal and put in a performance that had the local media suggesting the number one jersey is the Dutchman’s to lose, while Koeman made a raft of changes as the match wore on, including his entire back four, with Leighton Baines and the fit-again John Stones given pitch time.

Despite the victory, Koeman conceded his side were very much a work in progress:

“The team, the players, we need to press better. The pitch in some stages of the game was too long. If you press up front, it means the midfielders they need to push up as well and it’s the same for the defenders. If one is pressing and the player behind is not following, you get problems. On that we need to improve.”

Everton XI: Stekelenburg, Coleman (Baines 61), Pennington (Holgate 61), Mori (Stones 61), Oviedo (Galloway 61), Tarashaj (McGeady 46), Cleverley (Besic 61), Davies (Gibson 61), Mirallas (Lennon 61), Barkley (Dowell 61), Deulofeu

Barnsley 2 Hull 2

A late equaliser from Jarrod Bowen kept Hull’s unbeaten pre-season record intact.

Bowen struck from a Peter Odemwingie assist as caretaker manager Mike Phelan was again forced to field a number of Academy players in light of the club’s many injury woes.

Adama Diomande had given the Tigers the lead early in the first half, finishing well from a Shaun Maloney pass, but Barnsley gave as good as they got throughout the match and came within four minutes of securing a comeback victory.

David Meyler made his first appearance of pre-season to boost Phelan’s midfield options, although the latter’s days in the role look numbered, with former Everton boss Roberto Martinez now the clear favourite to land the Hull job.

Hull XI: Kuciak, Elmohamady, Tymon, Davies, Clackstone (Barkworth 59), Diame, Clucas, Maloney (Meyler 78), Odemwingie (Olley 87), Diomande (Bowen 46), Luer (Hernandez 57).

Spurs 1 Juventus 2

Tottenham’s pre-season started with a loss to Juventus as coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded an inexperienced side that gifted the Italian giants two first half goals.

With a raft of international stars still recovering from their summer workload, Pochettino did at least manage to hand debuts to new signings Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen. Given that Kevin Wimmer (black eye) and Christian Eriksen (illness) missed out, asking such a young team to keep Juventus at bay was always going to be tricky.

Spurs improved considerably after the break and Erik Lamela, one of three half-time substitutes, cut the arrears after good work from Wanyama, who was one of only two outfield players to feature from start to finish.

Post-match, Pochettino was hopeful that Eriksen could recover in time for the upcoming clash against Atletico Madrid:

“[Eriksen] got a virus when we arrived in Australia on Saturday. It was impossible for him to be involved in the game [against Juventus]. We’ll see. We will see what happens on Friday and we hope he will be available to play 45 minutes.”

Spurs XI: Vorm; Trippier (Walkes 63), Ball (Amos 79), Carter-Vickers, Miller (Yedlin 46); Mason (Winks 46), Wanyama; Son (Lamela 46), Carroll (Edwards 63), Chadli (Onomah 46); Janssen (Harrison 63).

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic - Early Wildcard Planning

With the changes last year to how wildcards work there has been more of a move to using the first wildcard early. As someone who has never held their wildcard past GW4 (even before the changes) I know that it's highly likely that I'll use it early again this season.

Should those of us that are likely to use it early anyway, plan for just the first 3-5 game weeks and target the fixtures? Or are we setting ourselves up for a fall?

Or is it worth planning as if your team is going to be there for the medium term (barring transfers) and then using your wildcard as you need?

Set your team up to give you the best possible start. No poiont in medium term planning at the start. If you need to WC early then go for it dont like the idea of planning an early WC. ,

Well that's the thing though - to give you the best possible start do you solely play the fixtures and put in players you might not want after 2-3 game weeks. Or do you go for players who might not have the best start but in the medium term might do well for you.

If I was planning for an early WC my team would look different than if I was trying to give myself the best possible start but also not have to worry about making a huge amount of transfers going forward.

For example - Swansea players if planning an early wildcard but probably won't give them a proper look if I'm not.

I see what youre saying but youre only really 2-3 transfers away from the team you want. For example you could start with Siggy and sell after GW2 for the next Mahrez.

I always get off to a poor start so irrespective of planning I have to play it GW2-4 🙁

I used my WC last season quite early. I think you will fall into two categories -

      1. You want to maximise points with in-form players after the first 3 games
      2. You've selected wrong players who are not playing/injuries

I was in the second last season so had to use it, but I can see the advantage of doing it early.

Gabriel at 5.0m is the big question here. You should play for those 3 weeks only, which would mean to not start with gabriel but he could go up in price. I think it's safe without him - unless he scores there won't be many buyers between the start and the wc

I've planned it again for the first 3 GW's and even if I've had a great start I will still wildcard.

Last season I made a lot of TV during the first international break and it gave me a chance to look at the new premier league players.

Out of interest why would you wildcard if you've had a great start? Does that mean you're fully playing fixtures even if your team starts off in great form? (Which could be because of the fixtures of course )

Because I want to build on that great start and keep my team evolving.

I like to use form over fixtures, but that doesn't mean I don't look at fixtures at all.

Long term I want more TV, this is the best time to gain it.

I got to agree with this regarding team value.

I go early on the wildcard for much the same reason stated by everyone else but only last season did it have any basis as a good move.

Many thought last season that it was still a poor move before it was a change in how they had been playing the game for years.

I had pretty high team value and then down the line a really strong selling value in my team which is really more prevalent than team value per say.

The way the game is set up with prices this year getting on the ball with team value could be very important.

In four cash mini leagues last season I won three and came second in the fourth.

Many of my rivals did not play the value game, and while it is hard to quantify I caught up a lot of ground towards the end through a combination of chip strategy, double gameweek planning and team value accrued.

I'll be doing the same again this time.

Added to the wildcard having merit now as a strategy we also have players returning late from Euros who will likely not be in our original teams and there is a bit of a fixture swing as early as GW4 where big hitters could be firing and desirable and the earth moon and starred may need to be moved to get these players in on top of the gems that reveal themselves in the first three weeks.

The value game is definitely something I need to consider more this season - I got left behind a bit last season.

I think it's going to be very important as the season progresses - there's lots medium to expensive players we may want to get in....unless there's another Mahrez of course 🙂

I mentioned team value / selling value in terms of a mini league rather than overall because I notice a more significant difference in my value to that of my rivals.

And as a result a great difference in how ramped up my team is compared to those say post xmas or come second wildcard.

Using a GW4 wildcard gives you two free transfers to use to get in whichever players are flying in the positive transfers in market after GW1 and GW2.

Especially this year when we have so many big hitters at £9m+, would be good to gain some TV in the international break so you have a chance to fit more in.

Of course there will be some cheaper options but when Hazard/Sanchez/Ibra/Aguero/KDB/Chelsea/Liverpool start firing its going to be difficult to ignore

somebody last season posted a "on wildcard, please RMT!" at 5:30pm on the first Saturday of the season last year.

it still makes me laugh thinking about it

but generally I think you shouldn't plan beyond the first six games, there are too many variables to plan further ahead than that - at any point in the season...

I think it's best to play the fixtures.
It's worked for many of us before. Only difference is that we need to be quick to get on bandwagons.
I'm prepared to take a few hits at the start. Might allow me to hold on to the WC longer.

When to use your wildcard: you will hear that inner voice telling you to use it when you notice that 6.5 mid that you never though about scoring for the third week running and your rank plummeting below the 3 million mark.

You will know when to use it. If you don't, you have got problems.

I don't think we plan long term, only with keepers and rotating defenders. Because we don't pick players who are rested, there's always "wait and see" list etc. Also, last season proved that quite often form is over fixtures. So I, personally, think that it doesn't work - "planning WC". I want my players to do well, that's my plan, but if doesn't work out, if there are injuries et. etc. I will be forced to WC early. But never inside first 2GW. Because I will not make a transfer after GW1, even if Lukaku scores 5 goals(I don't have him). And will do 2FT after GW2. FPL is a marathon, not a sprint, nor a relay.

It's quality, not timing. I've played in the first Intl gameweek before, caught 15 price risers and by GW10 I was flying and my ML was pretty much over. The following season I did the same again and had to cope with 11 long-term injuries by GW7 and wished I'd kept the WC a bit longer. i think with the new(ish) rules then the optimum time to play it is GWs 8-12 - but you've got to be able to hang on to the coat-tails of those who get it right in GW3 with FTs and maybe a couple of hits for this to work, which is not easy. This year I will plan to hang on for a bit, but will be fully prepared to hit the button if it looks like things may be getting away from me.

Currently set with three opening day home strikers (Aguero, Long, Gray), double Burnley defence for the two home games (Heaton Keane), and a good spread of Utd, Spurs, and Liverpool attack.

If I get Gabriel in for Walker I will have 2.5m ITB which gives me a lot of flexibility anyway! Keeping options well and truly open this year. Sick of crawling back from a OR of 1.5m in GW2!

OR 1.5M in GW2 isn't so bad. If I get a GW1 score in the top 1M I'll be reasonably happy - there will be a lot of bench boosters GW1 that will skew the rankings a little.

I am planning to do the early WC tactic so will be playing the fixtures moreso than form until GW1 shows us the latter.

My question is do i start with KDB (have Kun as well), play him against Sunderland and then easily downgrade to Hazard (if need be), despite a new City manager and tactics/playstyle. Or do i choose a Liverpool mid (bad opening fixtures) who benefited last season from destroying top league teams and potentially ignore Hazard until WC but also use the extra cash to upgrade elsewhere?

I'll prepare my team for 3-5 GWs. If I did well I will hold the WC until Oct/Nov/Dec. If not I will definitely use in the first international break.

It's pretty easy for me, pick you team for first 3-4GW, if you team starts great(lets say 9 of your staring 11 is getting point) you keep the team, get on a bandwagon or two and watch your good rank and value increase. If it starts bad just change your whole team on WC. I don't see the reason why would i WC if i start good, why would i get rid of players that are bringing me points and are increasing in value?

Last year I played all out attack in gw1 with the plan to wildcard for gw2. I wanted to try and get a good start as I believe I make better decisions at the front of the pack rather than in catch up mode. Walcott didn't start and most of my players flopped. Mahrez and kolarov off the bench helped save some face. The early wildcard set me up very well though as the cheap, form players kept producing and without the usual bench fodder for much of the year I finished top 50. This year could be very different though so I'm planning for 5 weeks with a wild card before the fixture swing in gw6, although I won't hesitate to pull the trigger earlier if it seems like the right move.

I've tried keeping for when I need it most, coping with injury crisises that only in hindsight, was it apparent that I should have used it. The trouble is it's usually Saturday morning when the true picture emerges. Two hours for the wildcard?

Yes, I'm setting up for the first 3 GWs only. I always try to balance the team for the longterm, but then always end up playing my wildcard early - but I've never regretted it, and so this season I'm planning around an early WC team

My plan is to pick a team based on early fixtures. If they do well then they have form and I'm not too worried about keeping a few of them as I gradually phase others out. If they don't do well, wildcard.

What I wouldn't do though is have an extremely short-term, inflexible team structure that makes changes without a wildcard way more difficult.

      Lukaku, Aguero, Long

Late to the discussion and I agree with several posts above, plenty of words of wisdom on this thread.

What is interesting here to me is that the split wild cards and their first or second half benefits basically become a general set of instructions for how to approach each half of the season.

Yes, building team value in the early stages and catching bandwagons is crucial to eventually building the team you want, and yes, cashing in on DGWs at the end of the season is a nice boost. It naturally follows that using a WC is a great way to accomplish either of those goals.

But it isn't the only way: we get a FT every week, and we can always take a well timed hit (or more if you are like me) to fix a part of the team that needs surgery. It is always worth a -4 to turn an Ashley Young punt into a Siggy or Mahrez bandwagon.

The key is to not stand still around these two important parts of the season -- use the wild card or make decisive transfers, but missing out on bandwagons who become the value stars of the season or getting an 88 while others revel in a 176(-16) DGW score would be the big mistake here, IMO.

I'm really on the fence here.
Two years ago I had a great start and was able to keep my wildcard until later in the season without sacrificing early team value.
But everything needs to fall into place for that to work. More likely is that there are too many bad picks in my initial squad, and I'll have to pull the trigger early. However, just because the early wildcard is likely, do I really want to plan for only the first 4 gws and close the door on saving the wildcard?
I'll be thinking about this right up until gw1.

Help me throw another 1.5m into this team... Who to change for who.. Nothing obvious standing out to me. Might just keep the 1.5m in case I need to upgrade a defender to Azpi or upgrade a midfielder...

    Heaton - Pope
    McAuley - Pieters - Friend - Koné - Wasilewski
    Mahrez - Eriksen - Deulofeu - Gradel - Capoue
    Kun - Ibra - Lukaku

      Eriken to Ayew
Gradel is 5.5m? I prefer Ibe or Phillips over him.
I also prefer Maloney over Capoue

The front 3 are taking all you money...I was also stuck on Ibra, but then with Mkhi, the team looked more balance and made more sense.

You can downgrade Lukaku to someone as you have Deulofeu..

    Hi everyone,

I have £1m to spend, trying to decide where to put it. Anyone want to contribute?

    Foster/Heaton

    Friend, Evans, Shaw, Souare, Collins

Eriksen, De Roon, Townshend, Marial, KdB

    Aguero, Ighalo, Wilson

(Although might swap KdB & Ighalo for Hazard & Lukaku).

Where should I spent the £1m??

I would be cautious - despite Gabriel being back up to Mert last season, there is a chance that Chambers could get ahead of him.

Reading between the lines, I think Holding was signed so that Chambers could go out on loan this season, but Mert's injury may have scuppered this and Chambers will likely stay.

Gabriel had some dodgy games last season, so while it's more likely that he will step in, I don't think it's 100% guaranteed until we start to see him play week in week out.

I thought Chambers time at Arsenal was coming to an end, and surely Holding won't go straight in to the first team?

Gabriel seems a safe way into the Arsenal defence for the first 3-4 GWs at least I would have thought.

Chambers was signed for £16 million so I would be surprised if he was sold - he was definitely bought as a future prospect.

And yes, Gabriel will most likely play, I'm just saying I don't think it's a certainty.

They are trying buy brady as replacement for cresswell. Preseason almost means nothing, that form doesn't go into the real league most of the time

Then what would you say is the most likely clue to a starting lineup?
        Before GW1 preferably.

Yeah and the manager's comments. The teams will be their strongest on paper. It's nice to think grujic will play for liverpool but there is no way. Can and henderson are better

Nobody else seriously dubious over Arsenal fixtures and defensive frailty (especially without Mert)>?

Of course but one CS for Gabriel and he'll be 5.2

I doubt he'll start, any transfer they bring in will go ahead of him...too much risk for me. I'm heavily considering Cech to Steklenberg for fixtures and not covering Arsenal until GW7...RISK!

Not sure they will buy another CB just to cover a 3 month injury.

They would/should have bought a new CB in Mert's place anyway.

I think Liverpool will tear Arsenal apart first game of the season.

I don't think Mert's absence makes their defence any weaker, tbh.

You'll get to the Friday before season kicks off and still not be any wiser.

    A) Azpi+McAuley (rotatate with Friend)
    B) Baines+Gabriel(playing mostly)

If Koscielny is indeed rested for a few games, then Gabriel and Chambers/Holding doesn't scream CS.

With Shaw, Gabriel, Dawson, Keane and Friend I can cobble together something most weeks!
