Chelsea end Liverpool’s summer winning streak thanks to a Gary Cahill header. Andre Ayew is amongst the goals again as Swansea breeze past Swindon, Bojan Krkic fires Stoke to victory against Orlando City, whilst Sunderland’s Joel Asoro and Palace’s Freddy Ladapo take their chance to impress.

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0

Gary Cahill earned the Blues a narrow win in a bad-tempered affair that saw Cesc Fabregas red-carded for a shocking two-footed challenge and five Liverpool players cautioned earlier this morning.

Antonio Conte continued with a 4-2-4 formation, allowing Willian and Victor Moses the flank roles on either side of Bertrand Traore and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, whilst Fabregas partnered Nemanja Matic in the heart of midfield.

Fabregas provided the assist for Cahill’s tenth-minute winner before blotting his copybook midway through the second period. Despite losing the Spaniard, Conte made just four alterations and replaced each of his front quartet as the match unfolded – this saw new boy Michy Batshuayi earn minutes off the bench along with the likes of Pedro and Juan Cuadrado.

Liverpool tasted defeat for the first time this summer, having previously won all four of their friendlies.

Jurgen Klopp started with Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino as a front three, with the latter having a goal ruled out for offside before making way just after the hour-mark. The Merseysiders made nine alterations after the break but were unable to capitalise on their one-man advantage after Fabregas was sent packing on 70 minutes.

New centre-half Ragnar Klavan started alongside the likes of Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno in the back-four and the Reds boss confirmed that the former did not suffer any injury as a result of the challenge that led to Fabregas’ dismissal.

The German also went on to reveal that he reckons Joel Matip will be fit for the start of the upcoming campaign as the Cameroon international steps up his recovery from an ankle complaint:

“I expect him to start the season. But for this, he has to train a little bit more. The first two-and-a-half weeks were really good, he became better and better and then he was out. Now I think it is a week or more he has been out. He was in a training group today and hopefully he can be back in team training as soon as possible. The season start at this moment is not in doubt.”

Klopp also rolled out an injury update on midfielder Marko Grujic, who was subbed off at the break with concussion:

“The biggest problem for me in this moment is that Marko Grujic is in hospital, because he can’t remember anything. That’s not too cool. Hopefully it’s not too serious but of course a young boy in this situation is not too cool. Injuries after games like this in pre-season is the biggest problem obviously.”

Chelsea XI: Begovic; Aina, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Fabregas, Matic; Willian (Pedro 67),Traore (Batshuayi 67), Loftus-Cheek (Chalobah 72), Moses (Cuadrado 67).

Liverpool: Karius, Randall (Milner 64), Lovren (Wisdom 64), Klavan, Moreno (Alexander-Arnold 82), Stewart (Brannagan 82), Ejaria (Henderson 64), Grujic (Lallana 45), Mane (Markovic 64), Coutinho (Ojo 64), Firmino (Ings 64).

Dijon 2 Sunderland 3

Youngster Joel Asoro was the star of the evening as the Black Cats maintained their 100% summer record in France last night.

With Jermain Defoe still sidelined due to a groin injury, Asoro was handed his first start for Sunderland, with David Moyes fielding Fabio Borini and Wahbi Khazri out wide in a front three. The teenager opened the scoring and teed up Khazri for his second of the summer before making way for Duncan Watmore just after the hour-mark.

Watmore – who netted twice at the weekend – was brought down for a spot-kick, which Borini duly converted to chalk up another win for the Wearsiders.

The fit-again Jan Kirchhoff returned to action and played from start to finish in his first appearance of the summer. After being utilised as a centre-half at the weekend, the versatile Jack Rodwell started at right-back as Billy Jones dropped to the bench.

After the match, first team coach Robbie Stockdale admitted the club won’t take any chances with their top scorer Defoe:

“Jermain picked up a little thigh strain in one of the sessions. It won’t be a long injury and I’m sure Jermain will be keen to be fit for the first game of the season, and we are as well. At the moment it’s probably too early to say and we don’t think it’s anything serious, but obviously with a player like Jermain you don’t to take any risks”.

Stockdale was a lot more optimistic on the fitness of Patrick van Aanholt, though, after the left-back was forced off injured early on in the second period:

“At the break Patrick felt some groin tightness but he said he’d have a go and see if it would loosen off. There is absolutely no major issues there; whether we risk him on Saturday will depend on how he settles down over the next couple of days, but he will be fit for Borussia Dortmund.”

Sunderland XI: Pickford; Rodwell (Jones 62), Kone, Kaboul, Van Aanholt (T Robson 53); Cattermole (E Robson 71), Kirchhoff, Lens; Borini, Asoro (Watmore 62), Khazri (N’Zogbia 79).

Wimbledon 2 Crystal Palace 3

Substitute Freddy Ladapo played a pivotal role as Palace chalked up a second win in the space of 48 hours last night.

Connor Wickham grabbed the Eagles opener, courtesy of a Zeki Fryers assist, before the youngster emerged from the bench to tee up Yannick Bolasie and then net the winner thanks to a cross from Ben Wynter.

Having started against Colchester on Monday evening, Andros Townsend was afforded a 30-minute run-out as a second-half sub, whilst Jason Puncheon was fielded in the double-pivot alongside Mile Jedinak.

Although Pape Souare returned to action for the first time this summer, Alan Pardew was without James Tomkins, Wilfried Zaha, James McArthur and Bakary Sako due to injury last. The Palace boss is now sweating on the fitness of Fraizer Campbell, who was replaced by Ladapo just two minutes after the interval after picking up a muscle problem.

Palace XI: Speroni, Kelly (Binnom-Williams 79), Dann (Wynter 72), Delaney (Croll 67), Fryers (Souare 46); Jedinak (Boateng 72), Puncheon (Mutch 79); Kaikai, Bolasie (Lee 72), Campbell (Ladapo 47), Wickham (Townsend 60).

FC Twente 1 Southampton 2

Southampton recorded a third straight win under new manager Claude Puel thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk and substitute Sam Gallagher.

Dusan Tadic recovered from a minor leg problem to take his place in the Saints’ XI and supplied the assist for Van Dijk’s opener. The Serbian was fielded just behind front pair Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez, with new boy Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg afforded his first start at the base of the midfield diamond. Post-match, the latter’s displays at both ends of the pitch earns the praise of the local press.

Jose Fonte, Cedric Soares, Shane Long, Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis were not selected as Puel allows them to build up their match sharpness after featuring in Euro 2016.

Nathan Redmond replaced Austin at the break and bearing in mind both the former Norwich man and Rodriguez are listed as midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Puel’s preferred starting XI is clearly worth keeping an eye on as we assemble our 15-man squads.

Southampton XI: Lewis; Martina (Valery 62), Yoshida (Jones 62), Van Dijk, (Stephens 62), McQueen (Targett 46); Clasie (Ward-Prowse 46), Hojbjerg (Hesketh 62), Reed (Romeu 46), Tadic (Gallagher 62), Austin (Redmond 46), Rodriguez (Isgrove 62).

Swindon 0 Swansea 3

Mo Barrow grabbed a goal and two assists as Swansea swept aside Swindon to chalk up a second win in four days.

After both sides went in goalless at the break, Francesco Guidolin’s decision to make eight alterations to his XI proved the difference. Barrow needed just five minutes to set up fellow sub Andre Ayew – fielded up front once again – to net his second goal in as many appearances.

With Gylfi Sigurdsson and the Swans’ Euro 2016 contingent still yet to feature, Barrow was handed a share of free-kick duties and provided the assist as Jay Fulton extended the visitors’ lead on 55 minutes. Barrow then supplied the finish after being played through by Jefferson Montero, who was featuring for the first time this summer.

Swansea (first-half): Tremmel; Naughton, Fernandez, Van der Hoon, Kingsley; Fulton, Cork; Dyer, Gorre, Routledge; McBurnie.

Swansea (second-half): Tremmel; Rangel, Roberts, Amat, Van der Hoon; Fulton, Fer; King; Barrow, Ayew, Montero

Orlando City 1 Stoke 2

Goals from Mame Biram Diouf and Bojan Krkic earned the Potters their first win of the summer in the early hours of this morning.

Mark Hughes opted for a 3-4-3 formation, which saw the fit-again Ryan Shawcross play as part of a back-three alongside Phillip Wollscheid and Marc Muniesa. Glen Johnson and Erik Pieters (priced at 5.0 and 4.5 in FPL respectively) were fielded as wing-backs, with Marko Arnautovic and Bojan playing as inside forwards behind Diouf.

Johnson supplied the assist for the Senegal international’s opener, which was his second in as many matches, before Charlie Adam teed up Bojan – who comes in at 6.0 and is classified as a midfielder this time around – to fire home the winner from 25 yards out.

Stoke XI: Butland; Shawcross, Wollscheid, Muniesa; Johnson (Bardsley, 66), Adam, Imbula (Shenton, 82), Pieters; Bojan (Joselu, 66), Diouf (Crouch, 66), Arnautovic (Lecygne, 71).

I did wonder if Ozil would start the season, but we don't actually have many other options due to current injuries etc. Then again even if Ozil does play him v Liverpool or Mahrez at Hull seems like it should be an easy decision

Sorry but that Fabregas tackle is no where near as bad as everyone is making out.

First off, it isn't even two footed so that's false.

Secondly, He was beaten to the ball by a split second. 50/50 someone is gonna get there first.

Don't know how you could avoid a studs up challenge in the scenario, how can you do a forwards sliding tackle with your studs on the ground?

    1. reason17
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

You don't attempt tackle if your studs are showing

Question: how do you run 100m in 10 seconds with a knife without it being dangerous

      Answer: you don't.

It's a dying art unfortunately, and a piece of skill that's massively underrated. They're effectively removing a defender's way to get a ball off the opposition.

I've been playing at the back for more than 15 years now, so I might be a bit biased. But I believe that football is evolving into a sport where any sort of physical contact gets taken way out of proportion. The 50/50 tackles especially due to their nature of both sides going for it 100%. As a result somebody is bound to get hurt, but that's contact sports for you.

The whole showing studs is now deemed dangerous play, well, you try making a sliding tackle without showing them. It's virtually impossible. I'm all for cracking down on dangerous plays which either contains malice or could severly hurt a player, but it's getting out of hand.
If you look up YouTube videos of Maldini, Nesta and great generation of defenders from the late 90s to early 2000s, most of their tackles which were applueded, are now deemed dangerous and rewarded with at least a yellow card.

        This is spot on.

I remember doing tackles in sunday league front on studs up. It's only dangerous if you get the player. Most of the time I got the ball and I'm coming out with it.

It is a sport, and people get injured in sport. You can't avoid every possible bad tackle. It's different if you're going in with undue force.

people are bigger, stronger and faster than they used to be, making some challenges more dangerous.

Players have a right not to be maimed when playing sport.

It's actually not that hard not to do a 2-footed tackle, thousands of players manage on a daily basis.

        1. Graceless Goof
          • 10 Years

I know it wasn't a great challenge by Cesc, and therefore the red card was probably deserved. However it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. For instance it wasn't two-footed. His other leg was tucked underneath him if I recall.

Players aren't getting maimed left right and centre from slide tackles. But you cannot play a contact sport without accepting the risk of another player being late into a challenge and therefore inadvertedly injuring you. No it wasn't a good tackle. Yes a red card is acceptable judgement. Yes, most tackles these days are being looked at under a microscope to deem them dangerous, reckless, and even unnesseccary. And I don't like that path.

          1. pompeyfan
            • 16 Years

you're right, it wasn't two-footed. I should've said studs up and foot off the ground.

Red card is the right decision because it's supposed to try to stop people doing it.

Just 1 broken leg from such a challenge is too many. Of course accidents happen, but it's about minimising the risk.

Rough tackle, deserved a red, but he wasn't being malicious. He thought he would get the ball and if he did noone would think anything of it.

That's the thing. Today's rules it is a red, but it shouldn't be. And it's not a "shocking two-footed tackle" as it says above. It just slightly late, probably less than a second.

I agree. He could have run at the ball upright and but his foot in with the same effect, and he would've probably just been given a yellow. It would still have the same impact, with all his weight on the leg he used to reach for the ball, which would pose the same amount of damage to the opposing player. It's got a lot to do with looks if you ask me.

Thanks for the input, I am weighing up the keeper downgrade but have you seen how they rotate for the first 9-
        Fixtures-Wat,Bou,Sun,Wat,Swa,Sot,Mid,Sun,Bur all at home.
Definitely not worth the extra outlay?
Also, would Clichy to Terry not be an adequate change without the Azpi upgrade?

Hard to say... It's unlikely to be a good use of that extra 1M. CS are very hard to predict even if following "easy" games. And easy games can mean less save points, if the clean sheet is lost.

On Terry, yes it would be sufficient. I only suggest Azpi, as I believe he's going to get plenty of assists and the odd goal from his runs down the wing. If you need the 0.5 though, stick with Terry.

It's a fair point, I can see myself needing that 1 million further down the line but I do think the Sot/WHU rotation will yield more points.
Agree on Terry, I can see Chelsea being strong at the back under Conte so I may well make the switch.
Thanks once again for your feedback, good opinions, well made.

In fact, you wouldn't need to downgrade Morgan if you spent just 9M on your keepers.

WHY am I so desperate to have Sturridge when his opening fixtures are bad and he is so expensive. I can't shake it off I just have a feeling about him!
Head says don't be stupid, switch to Vardy v Hull then maybe week 2 Vardy . Sturridge.
    Thats sensible isnt it?

Judging by the way Conte managed Italy at the Euros, he seems to favour players who will follow his system to the letter, even if they're not technically as good as others in that position.

If Aina, RLC, Traore etc continue to follow his instructions and perform throughout pre-season, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them line up on matchday 1 ahead of those players we would usually consider nailed.

Conte seems to like him as a striker as well, could be FPL dynamite if he keeps his place.

Unlikely though when you consider Costa, Batshuyai, Remy and potentially another expensive forward signing will all be competing for those two spots.

Clearly on Ag and Ibra, but I can't help feeling that rotating them as capts for home games seems like a good idea at the mo.. Does use a lot of cash up tho... I tend to go cheap defence with a chance of getting something and it normally serves me well, but I'm open to any advice on improving it..

Yeah, I hear you. Sorry if I came off abrupt. I'll be rotating them as capts too.

How are you going to feel about that back line after the first few GWs? I'd eventually come to hate it.

Yep, its not a great defence I do admit and I need to do some work on it.. I normally go cheap rotating ones, so need to check it out a bit more to see who rotates really well.. This was my first draft so nice to get some ideas.. trouble, is you can't have everyone esp if you go Ag/Ibra/Payet/Mane..

Well Payet is simply awesome although Chelsea away first is not great.. I just like him and Mane I have been told will be virtually up front and explosive, so worth a punt?

Ah thanks for that.. I'm happy with that feedback esp on a first draft.. so capoue to fletcher which looks stronger I agree, Kone to Lenihan then daniels to Terry..

Looks a lot stronger thanks and to be honest I missed Terry at 5.5!
Great call thanks.. I wanted Daniels for pens, but Terry for chelsea seems a better bet I agree..

    RmT please:

    Heaton/Foster

    Friend/Souare/Terry/Shaw/Evans

    Hazard/Mahrez/Mkhitaryan/Lamela/Watson

    Aguero/Grey/Austin

    My issues:
Terry Walker - Walker seems to be a bargain but fixture for Terry is pretty good.
Mkhi - I think it might be the biggest dissappointment in my team
Lamela - I had Willian in my first team but was missing 0.5 M to finilize. Do you see a possibility to save 0.5 and exchange him for Willian?
Austin - i know it's a risk but i feel he will be a good investment.

Pieters is a no brainer- at 4.5 he was my first name on the team sheet when I thought they were playing 4 at the back. Not convinced that Ayew will stay OOP, lots of transfer rumours for Swansea and he faded badly last season.

Not sure if this is the best place to post an rmt as first time I've logged on this season

    Forster (boruc) Daniels
    PVA Bellerin (Evans Paredes)
Siggy Iwobi Martial Bojan (fletcher) Origi Aguero Ibra

like origi, however id ditch ibra for a 6.5 (gray, long, carroll etc) then upgrade your mid and defence as its looking quite weak, id ditch iwobi for maybe hazard and maybe switch fletcher to a 6.5 punt e.g. deulafe.. , jay Rodriguez, etc and maybe try to fit in a chelsea and man u defender by swapping ballerina to gabriel and getting PVa out, not sure if parades will start aswell

    2. Birds of Prey

      Daniels no longer on pens
Bellerin 1.0 more than some good 5.5s
      Paredes won't play bad fixtures
Bojan>some 6.0 nailed. . Or better downgrade a keeper and get Townsend or Delafue.
      good luck to you.
