The Fantasy Football Scout Dugout FC League draft night is fast approaching.

For those who missed our introductory article, Dugout FC is a free to play, draft-based Fantasy game that allows you to join or create a custom league, made up of multiple divisions.

There’s full promotion and relegation between the divisions and the game itself is driven by an Opta-based scoring system so advanced, Dugout FC are convinced it’s one of the best around.

It’s not too late to sign up to take part in draft night, which takes place this Friday at 8pm UK time.

In addition to resetting our 69-division Fantasy Football Scout South league from last year, we have also created a brand new Fantasy Football Scout North league to meet demand for the upcoming campaign.

Tactics for Draft Night

Dugout FC’s draft system is classified as a “snake” draft.

The team with the first overall pick selects, followed by the team with the second pick, third pick, and so on. At the end of the first round, the team that just drafted (with the last pick in the first round) will have the first pick in the second round and the round continues in reverse order.

There are ten teams in a division with up to 18 players allowed in each squad, there will be 18 rounds of picks before each of the teams are complete.

During the draft, you’ll have two minutes to claim your pick before your shortlist kicks in and selects a player on your behalf.

Preparation for draft night is key and the first step, aside from forming your shortlist in Dugout FC, is to form a ranking sheet for the players on your list.

This will structure your targets in order of preference – the bigger your list, the more you’ll have to turn to on the night as the two minutes ticks down on your selection.

The obvious tactic is to work down your list, prioritising your high rank players, although there will be times when you’ll consider reacting to the selections of others, perhaps promoting a player in your ranking list or even bringing in a new player. Fundamentally, however, for at least the first three or four rounds, it’s a good idea to stick to your decided ranks in order to start your squad with a foundation of players that you have some confidence in. After that, you can consider taking risks.

Getting your first round pick right is crucial as there can be a large points gap between the player list’s handful of high performing players and the chasing pack.

In 2015/16 just five players breached the 200 points barrier, including Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez and Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, who were the game’s highest scorers and the standout midfield picks, finishing on 254 and 242 points respectively. The rest of this elite 200 point club were made up of three forwards, Harry Kane on 230 points, Sergio Aguero on 220 and Jamie Vardy on 204.

To put their points scoring feat into perspective the next highest placed midfielder was Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen on 197, while the next highest placed forward was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez on 188.

Player Versatility

Another notable feature of Dugout FC is the concept of player versatility. For example, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney can all be played either in midfield or as a forward.

You should take a note of such players as, securing an asset who can fulfil a number of roles offers flexibility and can help cover injuries.

Be aware though they will score differently depending on where they are fielded. Midfielders earn a point for a clean sheet but need to complete 40 passes per point, while forwards only need to complete 30.

The Scoring Model

Be sure to check in on Dugout FC’s scoring model to be clear on the match events at play and how these are applied, in particular, across the positions.

The scoring is finely balanced between full-backs and centre-backs but you’ll want to either target dominant defenders who win a raft of aerial balls, or forward-thinking full-backs who provide a ready supply of accurate crosses.

The criteria for midfielders is pretty clear – aside from goals and assists, those who make accurate passes, accompanied with chances created, should be high on your list of priorities.

However, given that there are points earned for fouls won, you should also factor in those players who frequently run at opponents and earn free kicks for their side. Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha topped last season’s fouls won table with 90, closely followed by Mahrez on 83 and Swansea’s attack minded midfielder Andre Ayew on 78.

Up front, it’s clearly all about goals and shots, although again, big centre forwards who also draw fouls offer some handy supplementary points. Harry Kane looks a good prospect in this regard having won 55 fouls last term as well as topping the goal attempt table.

Dugout FC’s player list offers a full rundown of last season’s points to offer guidance on your draft night priorities. This, combined with the statistics in our Members area, should help you form your ranking list ahead of tomorrow evening.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, if you’re yet to sign up, it’s not too late and here is a reminder of the link to join our newly created Fantasy Football Scout North league. This can also be found by scanning leagues.

Good luck to all on draft night.

No, I have tinkered a lot today and decided he's worth the risk. Means I have Rooney, which isn't the worst.

Mane fits LIV like a glove and will be involved in everything & really close to picking him... but can't help thinking Firminio in v forward position with his deadly 1st touch surely will outscore Sado no? Or will he rotate more with Cout...... I was torn between the 2 but defo going with 1-leaning Firminio +0.5m

I think it may prove a mistake if you don't use it in the first 3rd of the season (up to about GW12 or 13). But I'm not convinced that the first 3 or 4 weeks is optimal, either.

      Currently on:-

      Aguero , Wilson , Musa/Benteke

    Thoughts on this

    Foster / Jak
    Shaw / Stones / Friend / Soare / Pieters
    Haz / Erikksen / Tadic / Barkey / Capoue
    Kun / Vardy / Gray

Vardy just too tempting week 1 vs Hull and i fancy Barkley to have a good season ...

Maybe but he still has to fight for his place against the likes of Fabregas, Kante(Nailed) and Matic for 2 spots. Add Mikel, Cheek and Chalobah(If he stays) in the mix if there are 3 spots as we played against Milan. Hazard/Willy pick of the bunch.

Is Zlatan worth 2.5 more than Rooney or is it best just getting the latter and using 2. Elsewhere?

Also which one will be on pens?

    1. MFPL

I personally believe that Ibra isn't worth the extra 2.5, you're better off using it elsewhere to strengthen your team.

I personally don't know who is on pens, I would assume Rooney but we will see in the Community Shield match I guess! (If there is any pens for them).

I was literally about to ask the same thing.
Depends on whether Lukaku moves and you have a chelsea mid so you're then doubling up on chelsea attack - which doesn't seem like a good bet.
But then Deulofeu still isn't really proven but definitely has the potential to explode, especially with Koeman.
      Basically I don't have a clue

Why are people not sold on Kane? Is it simply because Dembele is not playing. I'm not convinced that this affects Kane's scoring - and even if it does shouldn't Wanyama fill this void anyway?

I think people are being blinded by Ibra - Kane is 0.5m cheaper, is young and improving and proven in the EPL.

      No Dembele.
Horrible at Euros just as he was horrible on last summers adventure which could explain his slow start in PL.
This season he will have CL, no rest there I guess.

Still, I'll monitor him like a hawk.

Same thing happens every year, look at this list: Aguero, Ibrahimovic, Lewandowski, Kane, Benzema, Auba.

To a lot of people Kane just doesn't stand out as a big hitter even though he's proven us wrong two seasons running now. Should change his name to Kaneinho IMO.

I think you're making some valid points. Spurs also have a good schedule to start. I think dembele does help in that he controls the game through excellent possession and distribution. Still, Kane is clearly less prevalent on RMT scout rosters. I'm considering Kane, and then taking Martial as my man united attacker. Currently, I have Ibra though. Am waffling on this.

    Nolito, Mahrez, Gradel, Martial, Ramirez,
    Aguero, Carroll, Gray,

    Two questions. £1.5m ITB

I really want to squeeze VVD in here but also need funds to be able to up Nolito to Hazard/Sanchez if need be. What would you do to fit him in?

Gradel & Ramirez or Redmond and one of them?? Would scupper my plan for VVD at the same time though.

      • 9 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I think you have to be careful with Nolito as we're not certain he's nailed. Haz and Sanchez both nailed so might be worth swapping one of them in from the start and observing Nolito's progress?

Plus, Courtois is a flapper, even as a chelsea fan I wouldn't trust our defence just yet, Conte still has some work to do

      1. Cradders
        • 10 Years

I'm able to do Nolito to Hazard as it stands so that's fine. I might just leave it for the first GW to see what happens. Can't do both my changes though if I wanna keep money for Nolito to Hazard I can only make one. So I bought in VVD.

What you make of Ramirez, Gradel and Redmond?? Which two would you have?

Ramirez apparently had a good game last night, and Fischer has had 2 good games on the bounce. I'm sticking with Fischer to begin with as Boro look surprisingly tasty and their fixtures are quite plum

It is a good team but I would worry about that midfield. Redmond and Bojan will not start every game, and I could see Martial being rotated (and constrained) more often this season. I wonder if you could cut some money from the defence or sacrifice Kane

My first draft is what you are suggesting, Negredo instead of Kane and much stronger midfield. This is an attempt at bringing in prem strikers. Cheers!

I could rotate Redmond with Gray I guess, but I don't feel comfortable with such light midfield. Might drop Kane in the end.

Don't like Francis or PVA, get Capoue or Watson for Fletcher, Bojans a poor pick IMO get Gradel. Kane's too pricy

I'm going Sanchez. But the one thing to think about is that there is far better value in the mid price midfielders than the mid price attackers, unless Musa turns out to be a star or Benteke / Bony move clubs.

If it is just for GW1 I would look at Mahrez I think. I like the Musa pick and the team is strong. Redmond would be my primary concern as I think he will be a rotation risk, especially with Rodriguez back.

forster/adrian seems an expensive keeper combo.

expensive defence, are you really going to play more than 3 at a time, if not, maybe downgrade there.

Mid is ok but maybe lacks a big hitter.

Hate the idea of 4.5m striker. limits your options if one of the mid price guys starts firing. Also, 3-4-3 all the time for me.

    Foster, Jakupovic
    Kone, Mori, Shaw, Fuchs, Smith
Hazard, Mkhitaryan, Townsend, De Bruyne, Fletcher
    Aguero, Austin, and Gray

I'm debating Austin at the moment (Long appeals, as well as Sakho and Berahino if/when he gets his move to Stoke or Palace).

    Afternoon FFS'ers.

    1. Siggy + Kane (+0.5)
    2. Batshuayi + Martial (+0.5)

I think Lukaku could be a better bet than Batshuayi, depending on his situation. If he stays at Everton then he plays, if he goes to Chelski then Bat becomes an increased rotation risk.

      I would say in this order: 1, 3, 2.

What are peoples thoughts on the 8th attacker at the moment?

Personally I have always tried to incorporate a 5.5 midfielder (this year would be someone like Gradel or Fischer) as my kind of go-to backup in case of injuries or the dreaded rotation. If I have a starter injured for say 1-2 weeks, I can just slot my 8th attacker in without having to make a transfer, which can be used elsewhere. However clearly it costs an extra 1.0m, which could be invested elsewhere in the starting XI.

Looks like I am very much in the minority on here. I see most teams with a 4.5 midfielder (Fletcher/Capoue/Watson/Leko), and some with a 4.5/5.0 attacker (Diamonde).

Later on in the season yes it makes sense to have a decent bench but to start the season with you may as well get as much money as possible onto the pitch

    2. Bøwstring The Carp
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Thing is you don't hope to rely on your 8th attacker much with a strong front 7, so that extra 1.0m can be used actively in your playing defenders

Not point having 1m on your bench most weeks when it could be in your starting 11 increasing your points tally. Easier said than done though of course 😕

    3. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I have tended to want a 5.0 mid as my 8th attacker - reason being that the majority of the 4.5s lose value in the first month, and I hate to use a transfer on my 3rd sub so normally have to just live with the drop. But the 5.0 mids seem to keep their value longer. However this year all the 5.0 ones seem at risk too, so there doesn't look like much of a benefit over selecting a 4.5 one. So I would go with a 5.5 if I could afford it - but that extra million over a 4.5 might prove a stretch.
