Having only brought in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and youngsters Bassala Sambou and Chris Ranshaw in the transfer window, Everton completed their first major signing of the summer earlier this week with the capture of Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, after triggering the Senegal international’s £7.1 million buyout clause.

The 26-year-old agreed a four-year deal with the Merseysiders, and speaking about his first significant new addition since taking over at Goodison Park, Everton manager Ronald Koeman outlined what Toffees fans can expect from the former Lille midfielder:

“Idrissa will provide quality in our squad in the midfield and we want to increase the quality in the team. He was one of the players last season with the best record in interceptions and pressing in the midfield”.

The History

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, featuring alongside the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign, although he once again failed to register any attacking returns. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, only managing one assist, before establishing a key player for Les Dogues.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals from 32 league appearances, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered three assists. His performances attracted reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace, but it was Aston Villa who landed the midfielder last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million.

The new boy earned just a single assist league outings, though his ball-winning displays in the centre of the park caught the eye in spite of Villa’s relegation to the Championship.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011, and has since racked up 33 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to find the net for his country.

The Prospects

Whether in the 4-2-3-1 set-up Koeman mainly employed at Southampton, or the 3-5-2 trialled against Man United in midweek, it’s expected that Gueye will compete for a central midfield position along with James McCarthy and Gareth Barry.

Considering he ranked second only to N’Golo Kante last season for both successful tackles (108) and interceptions (141), the summer signing looks odds-on to establish himself as a regular starter as the new manager adds more energy in the centre of the park.

Gueye’s arrival on Merseyside should help provide some much needed protection in front of the back four, given the Toffees conceded 55 goals last season, with only the bottom five sides letting in more. The appointment of Koeman should also help in that regard, bearing in mind that Southampton held the joint-fifth best defensive record in the top flight last term, conceding just 41 goals.

So while Gueye’s Fantasy appeal is likely to be limited to games that reward defensive actions such as FanDuel and DraftKings, he should help bolster the appeal of their nailed on defenders such as Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.

Both have seen their prices drop to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, and with Gueye’s presence in midfield likely to allow them more freedom to bomb forward down the flanks, we could see their attacking potential increase – certainly, Koeman’s decision to utilise the duo as wing-backs earlier this week has boosted their appeal.

Ramiro Funes Mori (5.0) is another to keep an eye on, though, given the Argentinian’s set-piece threat, having scored four goals in just 28 league matches last term, while he averaged a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, better than the likes of Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann (114.8) and Leicester’s Wes Morgan (172.4).

In terms of the Everton midfield, Gueye – despite a favourable 5.0 price tag in FPL – is unlikely to merit our attention due to his little attacking threat.

Both Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu have been impressive during pre-season thus far, with the latter having netted three times playing primarily as a “false nine” in the absence of Romelu Lukaku, after the Belgian was handed an extended break following his participation at the Euro 2016.

With speculation linking Lukaku with a return to Chelsea, Deulofeu may offer some out of position potential heading into Gameweek 1 should the Belgian depart, but that will likely be short lived, with Koeman certain to bring in attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Everton’s fixture list over the opening seven Gameweeks (TOT, wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL) is particularly favourable though, facing just one of last season’s top eight, so Toffees players look good options as we look to finalise our initial 15-man squads.

So while Gueye himself offers little Fantasy appeal, his energy and ability to break up opposition attacks should be good news for the prospects of both the Everton defence and flair players such as Barkley and Deulofeu.

Feghouli is a bargain. Can play right across the midfield and due to Payet missing first game/Lanzini injury I think it's a no brainer. Also given the no 7 shirt, scores a decent goal last night and Bilic likes him. ENJOY

    Hi Guys.

Here's the initial draft of my team for you to all shoot down in flames.

    De Gea (Jakupovic)

    Bellerin, Alderweireld, Azpilicueta, Fuchs (Wasilewski)

    Mahrez, Hazard, Eriksen, Tadic (Redmond)

    Vardy, Rondon (Diomande)

Obviously, first impression is that compared to the normal template this team is obviously over-loaded in defence, ultra light in attack and missing the vital Aguero. In fact the complete opposite of the norm.

But is Aguero really that vital? And am i wrong to over-load my defence?

As i see it, in FPL its the defenders that offer significantly better value for money than the strikers and to illustrate this point lets look at everybody's 'essential' striker, Aguero, and compare him to a defender, Bellerin.

Last season Aguero accumulated 184 points from 2361 minutes pitch time. This works out at 7.79 points per 100 minutes pitch time.

Bellerin totalled 172 points from 3240 minutes pitch time. This equates to 5.31 points per 100 minutes pitch time.

Ok, so Aguero comes out on top in terms of points based on pitch time but when you factor in the prices for the players its a completely different story. Bellerin shows considerably better value in terms of points per £.

Aguero's 7.79 points per 100 minutes works oput at 0.599 points per £m.
Bellerin's 5.31 points equates to 0.816 points per £m, a 36% better return for your money!

Its not only Bellerin who offers better value for money than Aguero but most premier defenders do, as do many mid-priced and premier midfielders. In fact, throughout the game its the defenders and midfielders that seem to have the edge over the strikers when it comes to value for money, hence the reason for an ultra lightweight forward line in my team.

To analyse my team here is the breakdown of each player expressed in terms of points per £m relative to their minutes played.

    De Gea 0.844

    Bellerin 0.816
    Alderweireld 0.747
    Azpilicuete 0.646
    Fuchs 1.006

    Mahrez 0.832
Hazard 0.474 (obvious improvement expected this season)
    Eriksen 0.713
    Tadic 0.918

    Vardy 0.673
    Rondon 0.692

When you compare these figures against Aguero's 0.599 you might start to question whether he is as essential as the majority seem to think.

As we all have to fit our squad into a £100m budget, the way i see it, points per £ is far more important than a player who will occasionally hit a hat trick or even four or five goals in a game. Yes, you can give the armband to Aguero every week and double his points, but whats to stop you giving the armband to a defender every week and doubling his points? (Unheard of. Until now! Lol)

I realise my team is rather inflexible at the moment with a couple of probable non playing selections but my initial aim was to get the maximum player value on to the pitch. My intention is to generally play the above team in a 4-4-2 formation with the ocassional 4-5-1 when fixtures suit. I may well have some tinkering to do before GW1 but i think my basic squad structure is in place. However, i have been toying with the idea of downgrading Vardy in order to bring in a 5th premier defender with a view to playing the ultimate 5-4-1 formation!

Its maybe a madcap strategy and i'm sure the 'Aguero Essentialists' will not be convinced, but maybe its given a little food for thought.

I see the point of this but if you have true value all over the pitch you will only spend £80m of your budget. Value is great but is there entirely for funding the purchase of luxury players like Aguero.

I actually like it, but I'm not sure it will work.

I would't advise a 5-4-1, you're pushing it already. You do have a point about defenders being better value, but you need clean sheets + goals for it to work. I doubt all defences will perform, and it's not like decent FPL players will not own Bellerin or another Arsenal defender in the future when everyone's back and the fixtures clear up for the better.

The thing is that almost all of the players you pick are decent, you're just missing Aguero. I would downgrade at least 1 defender and 1 of Mahrez / Haz / Eriksen in order to raise funds for a better third forward and maybe even downgrade Vardy for better balance.

      But I like the idea.

Do you have the value for money numbers for other 6.5 strikers?

Front line will cause some issues pretty soon imo.

Most people react like dicks. It's a good team. I would reconsider Rondon & Vardy though. I think Vardy might struggle this year as teams have figured him out. Rondon could be a differential but West Brom arent known for being prolific. Otherwise, very solid.

This would work if you had 2 or 3 "cheap" options like Kane, Mahrez, Alli, Michu etc as well as a heavy hitter like Aguero.

I find teams chasing the title in the later weeks of the season are excellent for defensive points (Chelsea, Leicester) not at the start.

If you captained Bellerin for 38 weeks this season and played a 442 with Rondon up front I would be willing to bet a rival who captains Aguero for 38 weeks playing a 343 will beat you comfortably

I worked out these stats as well, but you are applying them completley wrong. These stats are useful to help make a decision between two players that you are undecided on. Not to exculde the highest scoring players in the game. Yeah your team will be efficeint, but it won't be in the top 1,000,000.

add up best 5 def last season add up best 3 strikers last season add double for one of them as capt its the same score almost. top 5 def cost you 30.5 top 3 strikers cost you 30/33 if you add aguero who came in 4th

Translating this into points per game, gets:

              De Gea 4.6

              Bellerin 5.3
              Alderweireld 4.9
              Azpilicuete 3.9
              Fuchs 5.5

              Mahrez 7.9
              Hazard 4.7 (without improvement)
              Eriksen 6.1
              Tadic 6.9

              Vardy 6.7
              Rondon 4.5

              61 pts x 38 games = 2318

Aguero at 0.599 would return 7.9 each game, tied with the best above

If I was trying to maximise the PPG/£m i'd probably go with:

DDG, Valencia, Shaw, Fuchs, Francis, Mahrez, Arnautovic, Tadic, Firmino, Townsend, Aguero, Carroll, Gray (with Paredes/Jaku permabenched)

Hopefully closer to 70 points....What'd you think Mick?

Nonaynever, Yes, that looks a very good team, even though you have included Aguero.

I've not checked your points as i'm not sure which two players you would bench in addition to Paredes & Jaku. I also think 70 points might be a little optimistic but, as i said, i've not checked your player totals so you may well be right.

Oh, i didn't realize your figures included two benched players.

My figures which you quote above only include the basic 11 players and disregard all the benched players. Obviously in practice benched players would be used during the season and this would undoubtedly increase my overall team score.

RMT please? Any glaring ommisions and mistakes?

    DDG - Jaku
    Azpi - Morgan - Mori - Evans - Pieters
    Haz - Mahrez - Tadic - 5.5 - Watson
    Aguero - Lukaku - Long

    Tadic or Ayew/Siggy ?
Long could be any other 6.5, but I like Carroll's fixtures from 3 or 4 onwards so can always switch.
I am not really set on a 5.5. I liked Puncheon's form at the end of last season and CPA have okay fixtures but it's a longshot.
Not a lot of talk about Matt Philips from WBA, I remember him scoring that amazing goal at QPR and being quite decent with 3 goals and 8 assists so I'm considering him.

    Any help?

I've changed line ups so many times and had Aguero in a number of them but points vs dollars the numbers just don't add up. Even if he goes mental it's obviously a tough pill to swallow but when you consider minutes played, dollars spent and total points over a season I think it's hard to justify having him. Watch him prove me wrong in GW 1 but on the other hand is it so unlikely that Moyes doesn't bring his bus to City and take a 0-0 or a respectable 1-0 defeat with Otamendi scoring from a corner? City still taking shape under Pep, De Bruyner underdone etc. etc...

Hi gang, thoughts on the below? I'm happy to start with Rooney to be able to afford a decent midfield. Ibra was killing me with Mahrez and Hazard in. Bojan and Ibe will rotate. Have a soft spot for Ibe seeing how well he played for Derby on loan - I think he will do well away from Liverpool. Carroll is a dice roll on end of season (or just before!) form; when fit I think he is top class.

    Foster

    Simpson Shaw Pieters

    Hazad Mahrez Tadic Bojan

    Aguero Rooney Carroll

    Subs: Jaku Ibe Evans Fernandez

Haters will hate Rooney but l like him as a pick due to rotating front four and set pieces. Appreciate the Carroll pick but think there are better alternatives (downgrade and upgrade defence)
