Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning ruled Nemanja Vidic out for the season with a knee injury.

The United skipper was stretchered off in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat in Basel and the injury, admittedly, did look a nasty one to those watching on.

At this morning’s press conference ahead of the home clash with Wolves, Ferguson revealed:

“It’s not unexpected but it’s still bad news. We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won’t be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down. It’s a blow.”

There’s no denying Vidic’s loss is a massive blow to United’s title challenge. A 6-1 defeat at home to neighbours City forced Ferguson to go back to basics in gameweek 10. A run of 4 clean sheets in the following five fixtures coincided with his captain’s return from a calf problem and despite scoring just a single goal in each of their last seven games, United have been able to stay within touching distance of City at the summit.

Their defensive form, allied with a favourable run of upcoming fixtures, has seen many draft in members of the United back line, with Phil Jones, in particular, seeing plenty of Fantasy investment. While faith in the United defence will have been somewhat diminished by this news and transfer plans adjusted, there will still be plenty willing to reconsider alternatives.

With Rio Ferdinand established as a regular in the heart of defence once again, Fantasy managers will be hoping Jonny Evans comes to the fore, given the Irishman’s 4.4 price. Vidic’s loss is likely to lessen their stability at the back to a certain degree and Evans, therefore, would not be much of a risk at that budget price. He played in nine of United’s first team fixtures, picking up four clean sheets.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also stand out, at 5.2 and 6.4 respectively, and offer more adaptability than Evans. Both have already played at right-back and centre half, with Jones’ central midfield duties also in his locker and may offer the greatest chance of game time over what is set to be a hectic festive period.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Getting round to listening to the podcast, Granville is doing a good job of making up for dbronaldo's absence, moaning about transfers he nearly made. 😉

Although, I did laugh a lot when Granville told Mark to 'shut up' after Mark laughed at him.

I think there should be a new regular feature called "Mark My Words" where Mark lectures Granville sternly about his failings in the previous gameweek.

Ok...I got T Cahill in for Drenthe last week..silly punt really as Timmy hasn't scored in a year and Everton look terrible going forward. But my thinking was fixtures ; STO, ars, NOR, SWA.

    Vorm (Howard)
    Jones, McAuley, Brown (BAE, Wilko)
    VDV, Silva, Cahill, Walters (Formica)
RVP, Adebayor, Bendnter..........0.7m in bank, 1 FT

    (A) T Cahill to Bale

    (B) VDV to Nani

    (C) Bendy to Ba/ Sturridge

or save transfer? Thoughts appreciated thanks

NBTM, but my point is, that type of player, not a Wesley-type player. Fergie needs a strong pace-setter in his Mid, someone who can dominate possession and set the tone of the game, Wesley wouldn't do that.

So if you can't get Xabi, get the next best Xabi-a-like, not a completely different player, especially one with a very questionable start rate.

Im sure he tried but that sort of player is hard to find. Madrid snapped up the only one i can think of - Sahin. Players just weren't available this Summer. We struggled, Rennes wanted £30m for M'Villa! Bolton £15m for Cahill. As well as they've done, im sure Arteta, Santos and Mertesaker weren't Wenger' first choice.

Arteta would have been decent for Utd come to think of it.

NBTM, perhaps on Arteta. I take your point about cost/availability but regularly hear/read MU fans talking up Wesley for Jan, and I just don't get it, not with Rooney, Nani, Ash all options to play of Chico, Berbs or Welbeck.

Felliani might be worth a look in the Prem.

    Hello!

Does anybody knows what happens when I play 3-5-2 and one of my defenders are injured ( Richards ), and my first sub is Dyer. If Richards won´t play, will I then play a 2-5-3 or will my first defender from my subs come in? Might sound a little bit messy but maybe you´ll understand what I mean 🙂

You HAVE TO play 3 - 2 -1 minimum. All formations MUST require you to have at least 3 defenders at least 2 midfielders and at least 1 forward. After that all permutations are acceptable. A defender will come on in order to insure you play with 3 defenders. Even if none of your sub defenders play, no midfielder or striker can come on.

What was the reason Nathan Dyer only got 45 minutes last game? Seeing the tweet about Routledge and Luke Moore being called in, do we have a rotation problem with N Dyer now? He's hardly the most effective footballer out there so it wouldn't surprise me THAT much.

Quote Paul Merson, who's probably only watched Nathan Dyer once.

To be fair, Dyer is crap, so Merson's observation is understandable.

I think Dyer isn't great and very very ineffective but I also think he brings much to Swansea and the way they play. He's good at keeping possession for them and can be an outlet when they want to break too. I agree that he would bring nothing to any top 10 side or so.

need some help, one free transfer and 0.4 in bank.
    Ruddy, Westwood
    Walker, Jones, Kompany, Simpson, Enrique
    Silva, Ramsey, Bale, Moses, Dyer
    Suarez, Adebayor, RVP

do I hold on to Suarez? Does Ramsey have to go? Is there too much money in the defense?

    Appreciate any help....

      Moses > Nani,
      Kompany > Kelly (fulham)
      Ramsey > Drenthe

I don't think WC right now is necessary.

For the longer term I would do Ramsay > Sinclair which would give you a little more cash but I guess it depends when you want to play your WC?

PS. I would not jump on the Drenthe wagon right now mate, you'd be better off going for Rodwell and having a bit of extra coin. Wait till he starts playing again first.

Slightly, I must admit. But I just don't trust the United defence without Vidic, so therefore they'll need to score more to win games, you'd assume. My team is in tatters, can't get too much worse.

          Moderately so thank you.

Cabaye - personally I wouldn't get him while Tiote is out as he seems to be staying back more than he was. Although with Guthrie out, Gosling is likely to be playing and may be more defensively minded than Guthrie, which would allow Cabaye to get forward.
Cabaye obviously has corners on his side, but not penalties or (while Raylor is playing) shootable free-kicks.

I had him earlier in the season for a good while, and he didnt offer great returns to be honest (apart from a double pointer against Wigan). In the old bonus system he would be a far better bet, but didnt recieve many while I had him apart from when he scored against Wigan.

All in all, I'm not sure I'd recommend him until Tiote returns.

Vorm and Westwood don't rotate well in terms of when they play home/away. Could you replace one of them with Krul, or does the budget not stretch to that?

The Swans boss has been given a selection boost for Saturday as both Danny Graham and Steven Caulker are set to return to the squad following injuries.

The club's record signing missed the trip to Blackburn with an ankle injury picked up against Aston Villa while on-loan Spurs defender Caulker has been out of action since damaging knee ligaments in the defeat to Arsenal back in September.

Brendan was delighted to see both players come through training this week in readiness for Saturday.

"Steven is back and he's been looking strong in training," he said. "He's got great stature and in the first four games of the season, he was arguably our best player.

"He should be up to speed for the weekend. We will have Danny available as well. It's important to have them both available as it means the squad is competitive."

I agree a bandwagon for someone who'll play and is liable for some cs points at home, but is cheap enough to bench away is a pretty good wagon to band on.
