is that to go agueroless or another means? see a lot of people going ibraless but that seems quite bold given his record already (maybe a jerk reaction to man utd losing)

Could be wise to hope Augero does't fire straight away and get the most out of Lukaku. I've opted for Bolasie and Baines so i don't have the issue but if he scores another hatty then I'm in trouble.

I got Lukaku in for Aguero and planned to switch back when he was back, now the hat trick has cast some doubt over it.

Might look to free up some cash from Barkley and Stones to transfer out Negredo from Aguero now.

Btw obviously Aguero should have dropped but is his price protected?

if you have 2 FTs then you should definitely use them this week. Long -> Lukaku or Kelechi if you are feeling adventurous.

Advise please, team for GW5 but can't decide on transfer:

    Heaton (Jaku)

    McAuley, Bellerin, Baines (Valencia, Amat)

Antonio, Sterling (C), Hazard, Cazorla, Capoue

    Ibra, Costa (Negredo)

Pretty sure on starting this 11 but tempted to use 1 FT either take Heaton out as Leicester likely to score or only other option for me would be taking Hazard out and putting in either a Spurs MID or I'm really liking the look of Bolasie and his fixtures coming up.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Stick, looks fine. If Burnley play deep against Leicester then Heaton will rack up the saves. Would worry about Sterling captain but the fixture is good.

Late to the Jonty hot topic for Aguero plans so I thought I'd post my opinion as a new post. I think Mark is just haunted by his Aguero-less experiment last year that ended after just 1 GW but I see things different this season. We have many premium options delivering and thus many captain choices unlike last year where we were reluctant to captain Mahrez and Vardy for maybe the entire first half of the season due to their budget price. Then we had Kane as an option for the second half of the season but that was about it really for captaincy. This season is different so far and I think it will continue to be so with Chelsea, Utd and Liverpool not in CL. We have Ibra who is a Utd option we lacked in recent years, is 1.5m cheaper, has better form than Kun, backed by stats, has a huge ownership and who is a beast of a player in real life that can match Aguero for goals and for explosiveness and doesn't get injured. The last time we had another player of this pedigree apart from Kun was when Suarez was at Liverpool and RVP at Arsenal then Utd. I don't think Kun was essential at all in these seasons was he? He wasn't the default captain which is really why we pay 12 or 13m for him. Add to that Hazard, Liverpool midfielders, Kane (with Dembele back), Lukaku under a much better manager and we have a lot of captaincy options that can deliver 20 or 30+ points on their day. I am tempted to go without Kun for a while. At least as long as the others, especially Ibra, are matching him. It is stupid to have no Man City cover though so maybe Sterling or Nolito will be enough. Anyone in the same camp?

But if if other premium options are matching him where is the harm? Ibra + Mane or Firmino will surely outscore Kun and a 7.5m or less player right? Even with captaincy considered.

You make some fair points so I'll give you my opinion in response.

I don't think there's any right or wrong answer at this point, and unless someone did a side by side comparison for the entire season containing one Aguero team and one Aguero-less team, then I'm not sure will ever be closer to a definitive answer.

What I do know, is I plan to have Kun and Ibra for the entire season at this stage, and I'm not convinced going without them and using the funds elsewhere will drastically improve my team as it stands with both those players in it. If it did I may have considered it, but as it stands, and after hours of experimentation, I see no drastic improvements elsewhere that would make me comfortable in dropping what imo will be my two greatest captain choices each gw.

I really don't understand why people are struggling to own both and have a decent midfield/defence.

It's not impossible at all and just got to stop trying to force in the extra player.

I used my wildcard last week and temporarily had Lukaku and Payet as placeholders but once I reverse it Ive still got a decent spread in mf and defence, played 442 last week (got 70 points before anyone says the formation don't work) and will probably switch between 442 and 352 depending on fixtures/form.

One things that's for sure, Aguero and Ibra go nowhere unless injured (or they elbow someone in the head)

The team structure next week (once I bring Aguero back) will be

          Heaton
          Koscienly / Baines / Valencia / Evans
          Hazard / Ozil / Antonio / Snodgrass
          Ibra / Aguero

Subs Pickford / Capoue / Amat / Stuani

Listened to the scoutcast where Mark was whinging about a lack of flexibility but I've got two mf spots I can use for players like Firmino/Payet/Mane etc depending on fixture strengh, still have a strong defence with the flexibility to play a West Brom defender or Capoue depending on who has the better fixture.

Not sure why many think it's such a struggle to own both.

That structure/tactic is working thus far and has brought in 246 points which is a fair start.

Well Stuani is a waste of space really. Don't feel comfortable having Stuani, Capoe and Snoddy in my front 7. But it could work for you if you play 4-3-3 often if Arsenal and Everton prove to be solid.

He's a waste of space like all substitutes but we have them as we have no choice, you're not going to play them but are there if the bench gets called into action.

Basic function of the game, can't hide from it.

                Mid price'ers with decent fixtures.

                Heaton Pickford

                Williams, Baines, PVA (Galloway, Amat)

                Sanchez, Firmino, Antonio, Bolasie (Capoue)

                Aguero Ibra Hernandez

I think the only glaring weaknesses in this team is PVA which looks like a bad punt if SUN don't tighten up but that can easily be fixed with another 5mil replacement as I think there's plenty value picks at that price.

The other slight weakness which I'm more optimistic about is Hernandez. Hull have had terrible fixtures so far so I think he's been overlooked, however I'll be bringing him in just before Hull's fixtures improve markedly, and I think he'll prove great value for a 6mil pen taking striker with the likes of Snodgrass and Mason behind him in support. It's a punt, but Hull will score goals against the weaker teams, and Hernandez will be leading the line.

Great post and yes I'm in the same camp. I'll most likely be going without Aguero all the way to GW32 when City have a ridiculous run home and TV will make it easier to get him in without major sacrifice.

I actually submitted a community article about Aguero maybe not being essential so maybe that will see the light of day. Overall I think the huge array of great options available this year combined with the injury risk and price of Aguero make it very possible and perhaps even optimal to go without him.

I keep hearing people say that you must have him and he's essential and everything but nobody actually gives a compelling reason. His overall score is unlikely to be more than 230 based on his history and with all the other big guns looking strong I don't see that as necessarily good value for money. I can easily see Lukaku, Ibra, Hazard and Firmino going 200+ this year for starters. Then people will say 'well you only have him when he's fit' but that involves numerous transfers to get him in and out and with his price being so extreme, it's not very easy to move him in and out without wildcarding.

Overall I think he is just a huge headache and I could only justify owning him if he was undeniably going to be the top points scorer. I don't even think he'll outscore Zlatan in PPG and definitely not with overall score.

Disclaimer: I'm a big City fan, Utd hater and Aguero fanboy + wouldgogayfor

Major flaw in your theory is that 90% of Aguero's 230 points will be doubled where else the 200 covered by Lukaku (for example) won't unless you chose to run the risk of captaining him and we all know he's not reliable.

If Lukaku (for example) was reliable for 38 weeks to be a captain he would be priced the same as Aguero or Ibra which is why they are priced so high because they are expecting most of the game to double their output with the captaincy.

You are paying 13m for 460 points in theory not 230 because you have to factor in the captaincy.

Are you telling me you will captain Kun for his every point? That is a weak argument. And did you consider the doubling of the alternate captain? Hugely flawed argument imo.

I will be captaining Aguero or Ibra like the majority of the game will, the one I chose not too will still give me half of the points that not captaining him will produce as a sort of insurance.

Very few serious players will go against them on a regular basis, I'm sure many casuals will just look at who did well last week but serious players will factor in the impact of the ownership in their decision.

A key point is no CL for Chelsea and Liverpool imo. Having a week to prepare for a game can do wonders for Firmino,Mane and Hazard for example. Same as Mahrez and Vardy last season. I can see 2 of the 3 breaking the 200 pt mark this season.

Yes true and the challenge is to still involve them somehow but the CL hasnt harmed Aguero's output in the past so I'm not sure we can assume it will make him any less of a pick.

Pep does more rotation than Pellegrini. He did plenty of that at Bayern. Don't remember the situation at Barca. Messi is an exception because he demands to play every game more or less.

I think you're right and this week backs that point: consider City match with Borussia as an FPL game; both Lukaku and Kun got the hattrick. Very few managers captained Lukaku, but majority would've captained Aguero.

So, yes, in theory, Lukaku covered Aguero's absence, but he didn't cover Aguero's captaincy.

Of course, many (me included) will consider captaining Lukaku against Boro. But would they feel comfortable to captain Lukaku if Aguero wasn't banned and played Bournemouth?

I think the question that is not answered so far is: Was Kun essential in the seasons where we had RVP, Suarez, Lampard and others who get easily 230+ points over the season every season? I think far from it. I think we are in for a similar season.

Kun is very desirable, but no player is absolutely essential.

The best solution is probably just to experiment with possible squads with and without him, and then choose the one you like best, (taking into account which one requires fewer changes from your current squad if you no longer have a wildcard).

And be prepared to switch between the two depending on how the season develops.

Be open-minded and flexible in your thinking.

Suarez was almost essential that season, being in a class of his own, but one FPL manager still somehow managed to finish in the top thousand without owning him. It was very desirable to own a number of these high scorers, but not necessarily all of them, and not necessarily the same ones as everyone else.

Very few players get 230+ points every season, although some regularly come fairly close. Since I've been playing the only players to achieve this score have been:
            2009-10: Lampard 284, Drogba 242.
            2010-11: none.
            2011-12: RVP 269, Rooney 230.
            2012-13: RVP 262, Bale 249.
            2013-14: Suarez 295, Yaya 241.
            2014-15: Hazard 233.
            2015-16: Mahrez 240.

Maybe if the threshold is lowered to 200 pts rvp and Lampard would feature more than once. I just wonder what kun's returns were like and how easy it was to fit him with the other expensive heavy hitters. Was there ever a season with that many options that we weren't able to fit in. I doubt there was ever a season with such a strong top 6 before with plenty of good fpl picks before.

If the threshold is lowered to 200, then:
                2009-10: Lampard 284, Drogba 242, Rooney 224, Fabregas 214, Tevez 210.
                2010-11: still none!
                2011-12: RVP 269, Rooney 230, Aguero 211, Dempsey 209.
                2012-13: RVP 262, Bale 249, Mata 212, Suarez 212.
                2013-14: Suarez 295, Yaya 241, Gerrard 205, Hazard 202.
                2014-15: Hazard 233, Aguero 216, Sanchez 207.
                2015-16: Mahrez 240, Vardy 211, Kane 211, Ozil 200.

So that's Rooney, RVP, Aguero, Suarez & Hazard twice each.
None of the others reached 200 more than once during the period.
Perhaps most of Lampard's best seasons were before this period.

It is certainly true that there has never been such a strong top six in the premier League before - but the standard of the rest has improved too, and there are now very few easy games. Clean sheets may be harder to come by this season, and there are going to be plenty of goals - but there is also more rotation these days than there ever used to be before. So it remains to be seen how many of this season's forwards and midfielders will reach 200.

... However, I only keep records of the top 3 forwards and top 5 midfielders for their price in terms of points per game, so it is possible that I might have missed a few.

Fabregas also got 205 in 2007-08.
The others in the list who are still active in the Premier League did not have any other 200+ scores.

I'm in the similar camp. I think KDB might do well this year who is going under the radar for now. Once the likes of Gundogan is back, I can see him playing much further, just like against United, but we'll see. But for now the plan is to replace Sanchez with KDB in GW6 and take the no Aguero route.

Didn't like KDB's position when Kun is on the pich. He had a free role in the derby with Kun suspended. He will revert back to central midfield and be the assister of the assister like the first 3 GWs imo. He is too expensive for my liking. I like Nolito though.

Reason for going for KDB is I think he's their most nailed on midfielder and also that I feel he'll touch that 200 pts mark this season. I'm presuming Pep will give him that free role from now on thou.

Nah., I think KDB is a very different player to Xavi/Iniesta he's got more goals in him. But yeah I didn't like his position with Kun in the team. So it will likely be KDB or No City for me.

I currently have Sterling and if he scores against Bournemouth I will probably keep him until the international break. I am worried by Sane eating some minutes though. Nolito seems safer in that respect.

It will take alot for me to go without Aguero, and I'm not there yet, far from it. But I was thinking long and hard to go without Ibra, and started my season without him, but good returns and very high ownership made me feel forced to sub him in.

You say in your post that "Ibra does not get injured". And that is a bit of a bold statement, yes he has been keeping him self on the field and in good shape lately, but he has some recurring hamstring issues and do some times need rest due to knocks, even though has really not been hit with these longer periods of injury that Aguero gets. Add to that, that Ibra very likely will have one or two red cards during the season. Then we have Aguero, that is some what of a pain to own most seasons due to absence during the season. And Ibra, who might not be as much of a pain, but can be to some extent.

Then I think you might have an argument for maybe not have both of them. Could very likely build up some very thought decisions during the season. It does not solve who is the better to keep, but that was my arguing for going without ibra to start with. As it looks now, I might have both when aguero comes back, but not at all convinced that that will stand for the rest of the season. But think it will have to be ibra who goes if I drop one of them, as it stands now anyway, tomorrow might be a different story.

I think 1 important factor missed out is "team goals" a guardiola man c will score how many goals a season? An overall 25% improvement and even aguero maintain his goal involvement, he will still score more points than previous seasons.

This is a huge factor for me. I expect City to score significantly more than Mourinho's United throughout the season. All things considered I just see Kun as more explosive in a more aggressive attacking side

Pep teams score a lot but tgat was mainly in teams that are superior to opposition by quite a distance. He won't find that at City and in the epl. Also the goals/points will be such more split at City than at Utd I reckon

Simply Aguero is the (argubly) leagues best player, and the focal point the leagues best team, who also on penalties, playing in an attacking system.
Take into account his proven track record, he is without doubt essential when fit.

          Alternatives:
          - Ibra is excellent and ticks most of the above but note this UTD side under Jose will simply do not create as many chances.
          - Kane can go scoring streaks but he’s often in areas/positions that don't provide xG and shooting from unfavorable spots. But on penalties.

The following 3 players are not leading penalty takers for their team. Which due to the high penalty rate is approx 1.2 PPG disadvantage, note this sample size is tiny under the new laws and teams will adjust quickly.
          - Costa is as a constant threat, leading the line in an attacking team. One area of concern being he often struggles to pick up bonus points, compared to the alternatives Kane and Ibra.
          - Sturridge talent and scoring record is up there with the best, playing in an ultra attacking team. Only issue could well be selection but if he starts the big game on Friday he could well be the one to watch. But again
          - Lukaku his price is attractive but quality wise there is a lot of statistical evidence to prove 4-8th placed team is his level and is not an elite striker.
          - Vardy was scoring above elite levels (1.36xG) so could well return to the mean this season as it’s worth noting the highest recorded long term is Messi at 1.27xG. But if he continues at similar rate he could become a great consistent alternative.

Watch list; Deeney (see Mazzarri record at improving forwards), Defoe, Benteke, Bony.

We need to talk about Kevin. Most of us are going to be celebrating all the Aguero points, but the person most likely to be supplying him is De Bruyne, whilst likely bagging a few himself. I can't personally work out a scenario that involves me shoehorning both him and Aguero in without losing Hazard, which is a problem.

Silva, Sterling & Nolito are cheaper alternatives but in my opinion KDB is by far and above the best city midfielder and his points will reflect as much come the end of the season. Is it too much to have both him and Aguero? Or is it in fact wise to have them both considering City have bagged 11 in 4 games so far?

KDB struggled a little away from home last season, so at his price I'd want to see more consistency to consider him.

The other question to ask is he going to greatly outscore the cheaper likes of Mane, Firmino, Ozil, Payet etc, etc? I'm not sure he does unless he finds that home and away consistency.

I think the gap between Aguero and Ibra to that of the cheaper strikers will be much more pronounced come seasons end, hence I think their higher prices can be justified. I'm not yet convinced that the super premium mids will greatly outscore the premium mids in the next bracket down, so find it harder to justify the added cost.

I'm happy to have Aguero as my only City attacker at this stage, and see the likes of Sanchez, Hazard and KDB as more expendable and interchangeable assets throughout the season according to fixtures.

        Hi Chris,

I'd be tempted to WC as soon as possible to sot out defense, GK, Oscar, Long.

if you have 2 FTs then you should definitely use them this week. Long -> Lukaku or Kelechi if you are feeling adventurous.

Leroy Fer is an interesting choice at 5.2m but has tough fixtures. Otherwise Snodgrass...

        Foster / Jaku
        Valencia / Stones / Amat / Souare / Friend
        Hazard / Ozil / Redmond / Firmino / Capoue
        Ibra / Lukaku / Gray
        1 FT & 2.3 ITB

It's a 1-week punt most probably as I'll WC to get Kun back.

        a) Gray -> Benteke / someone else
        b) Redmond -> Antonio

        Knee jerked. Regret it

How's this for a WC team?

        Foster / Pickford
        Valencia / Walker / Baines / Evans / Amat
        Haz / Firmino / Antonio / Snodgrass / Capoue
        Ibra / Lukaku / Wilson

Leaves me with 12.8 to do Lukaku - > Aguero (hoping rises/falls go my way)

Undecided on Evans, Snodgrass & Wilson. Help!

In a draft league, would you drop Tadic to pick up Capoue?

He would still be my 5th best mid.....
        Hazard, Coutinho, Antonio, Ozil

My strategy with any issue like this is offer Tadic and your third choice Forward out, see if you can get an upgrade on the Forward. Then drop the midfielder you get in return for Tadic for Capoue.

Yes, you don't need Tadic if that's your selections. You can always buy him back once he hits form.

I'd get rid of Cout though.

Got Costa, Ibra & Lukaku as my 3 forwards do you think if I stay with that it will cost me not having Aguero??? I think these 3 can hold up nicely together to keep me top of my league?

My midfield is Hazard, Sterling, Antonio, Fer & Capoue
My defence is Baines, Stones, Walker, Smith (BOU) & Kingsley
My Keepers are De Gea & Jaku

I have 0.2 ITB too. I was thinking of swapping Dea Gea for Lloris and Jaku to Pickford so that I could get a better defender over Kingsley. What do you think I should do?

I don't think I will miss out on much by having this because having Aguero is costly in other areas I feel.......

Will wildcard GW6, what's my best move for this week guys ?

        A) Gray > Benteke

        B) Gray > Iheanacho

        C) Barkley & Gray > Antonio & Lukaku (-4)

I wouldn't take a (–4) if it's for one week only. Of course, it could easily pay off, but Lukaku will probably not score big every week.

it probably won't work, but at GW9 I can make this front 8:

        Hazard Antonio Sterling Snodgrass Capoue

        Kane Lukaku Aguero

        GW10 AOA looks so good
        yeah, defence is weak

come next GW will propably take a hit and forget about this plan

        but looks good on paper

RP from yesterday which one would you choose?

        A) Save 2 FT's for GW 6 and take out Nolito & Costa > Kun & Pereya

        B) Use my FT this GW on Ozil > Mane then GW 6 use my FT on Ibra > Kun
