A Baggies attacker, a consistent Everton and a volatile market that’s showing the door to a goalscoring legend. We say goodbye to Gameweek 5 with a tale of the unexpected…

The Player

Immediately filed under “promising, must monitor”, Nacer Chadli was always going to be an interesting option once he’d made the move to West Brom.

An erratic Fantasy asset while at White Hart Lane, the Belgian nonetheless demonstrated the ability to spark to life in the box, raiding for goals and suddenly turning a forgettable average six out of ten performance, into a match-winning display.

That wasn’t the case in Gameweek 5.

On Saturday, the Baggies record signing carried the game to West Ham from the kick-off; Chadli single-handedly transformed West Brom from a ponderous, impotent attacking force to a team that bristled with threat.

His two goals and two assists have immediately brought him to the attention of the masses but, distracted by leading lights elsewhere, he’s yet to register the transfer interest Saturday’s points tally deserves.

We still have reservations. It’s still difficult to trust West Brom’s potential to score goals: we can hardly make a judgement based on a single performance against a beleaguered Hammers defence.

But with penalty duties unexpectedly tucked away in his locker, Chadli is clearly alive and back in the game.

Another handy mid-price candidate to call upon once West Brom’s schedule softens.

The Team

Five Gameweeks in and Everton’s recognition as a Fantasy force is already long overdue.

While Everton barely had to break into their third gear to see off Middlesbrough, it’s clear that they have become a very different proposition under Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman has revived their Fantasy assets.

We’ve already dwelt on the appeal of Romelu Lukaku.

While we remain wary of a player that has teased us for so long, his displays and output thus far have given us every reason to believe that we will see him make another stride towards genuine heavy-hitter status. A true challenge for the Golden Boot is on – 25 goals perhaps a realistic target.

But the supporting cast also warrants attention.

At the back, Seamus Coleman’s fine opener against ‘Boro was his reminder of his six-goal season back in 2013/14.

While we’re willing Leighton Baines to rediscover his returns from bygone years, Coleman has the legs on the left-back and could yet emerge as the stronger option.

Then we add Ashley Williams – a statistical monster who can potentially offer an even cheaper route into covering Everton’s new level of resilience.

In midfield, Koeman has added Yannick Bolasie on the right and appears to be investing faith in Kevin Mirallas on the opposite flank.

Both have the talent to provide us with mid-price options – particularly for those who still baulk at the concept of Ross Barkley following Lukaku’s lead in shaking off his frustrating inconsistencies.

The Talking Point

The mighty really are falling.

Eden Hazard’s price has tumbled 0.2 in the space of 48 hours with thousands of owners panicked at his meagre returns with Manchester City’s midfield assets sparkling.

Three points over his last two Gameweeks, plus an alarming decline in his underlying numbers, has provided the catalyst for what some would describe as a knee jerk reaction.

Last season’s decline will have also spooked some – we’ve seen how severely Hazard can regress; three encouraging Gameweeks has clearly not been enough to win back our trust.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is close to mirroring Hazard’s sudden collapse.

Triggered by Manchester United’s current malaise and Sergio Aguero’s return, Ibrahimovic is being mercilessly shown the door at pace, despite returning a goal or an assist in four of his five Gameweeks.

It fits the profile of the season discussed in last week’s ScoutCast.

The transfer activity of the last ten days is typical of a campaign that will see heavy-hitters frequently slide in and out of favour.

Last season we sat on the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Dele Alli because they provided such value: we were wary of selling them and absorbing a big cash loss and, given their price and a lack of alternatives, we could afford to sit tight.

With big funds tied up in both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, this is not the case. FPL managers will feel compelled to act quickly, driven by a market where every 0.1 counts.

The money tied up in failing heavy-hitters can be used to carry out significant surgery, or to move to the next big name edging into form and rising in price. There’s been a constant supply of those so far.

Regardless of the trend, many will sit still, discounting toughening fixtures for both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, backing them to punish the fickle amongst us.

It remains to be seen who will win out. But one thing is certain: the short-lived shelf life of the big hitters is already making for a fascinating season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anybody considered Wilson? Great fixtures coming and not bad underlying stats recently.

Makes it easier to get Ibra & Kun as well.

Thing is, I would expect Stones to start this time, and if you don't back him to keep a clean sheet vs. Swansea why have him in the first place? I know the plan is probably to sell him soon, but still...

Definitely wouldn't be benching Redmond considering he faces a pretty porous Hammers defense next. I'd bench Capoue, & play Stones, would wait for Pep's press-con.

        You know he will.

He'll probably be back to 13.2mil before the deadline and if he destroys SWA as expect he'll probably be the most transferred in player the following gw and potentially rise 0.2mil again.

That means non owners are potentially looking at finding another 0.4 - 0.5mil to bring him in before a tougher fixture against Spurs whilst missing out on what is expected to be a monster captain's haul the week prior against SWA.

        Good luck non owners. 😉

I'm nervously sitting behind the couch this Saturday night. Got KDB and hoping he keeps his sparkling form up. If Aguero can be limited to 2-6 points it'll be a miracle.

      1. devils advocate

Problem for you will be that if KDB does well there's a good chance Aguero will do well.

KDB bossed the match against BOU, and if he plays like that against SWA, who are arguably worse than BOU, then you can expect 5 assists for KDB and 5 goals for Kun.

Ok maybe I'm exaggerating a little. No wait, Kun has scored 5 goals in a game before so I retract that comment. Not exaggerating. Kun will score 5 goals. 😉

Controversial this, but Ibrahimovic is going to be 35 in a few weeks. He's playing in the most physically intensive league in the world. What he's achieved is unbelievable and he's a wonderful player, but unless United start laying on chances in the box for him, he isn't going to be scoring regularly.

There's always a honeymoon period at the beginning where he's trying to impress everyone. Physically he's giving 110% right now. I don't think it's sustainable. He's not going to run away from anyone and Mourinho can't seem to find winger combinations that are working, to tee him up.

Everyone's mentioning Stoke as a captain option, but his attributes should be nullified by Shawcross. A quick mobile attack like Man City and Palace and it's a different story.

He has Leicester first. Let's see how he gets on up against Morgan and Huth.

Not a fair comparison just yet I wouldn't have thought, all others have had plenty of time in the FPL, Ibra is only 5 matches in (with 4 goals and an assist I might add)

Don't be like that! If you take the transfer trend, then I don't think it's unreasonable to think people are going for Aguero, Sanchez and KdB over Ibra in the past week. United simply aren't gelling.

He's not all headers and hold-up play. He's more than capable of moments of individual brilliance and blamming one in the top corner from outside the box. Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself into selling him?! I'm not having it

I sold him on a WC this week. I'm not trying to convince myself of anything.

I'm not doubting his brilliance... I'm doubting his stamina. There was a great chance at the weekend where he arrived fractionally late at the far post, and put his side foot volley wide. It'll be little things like this where his age slowly catches up with him. He'll find it frustrating too.

What he lacks in speed he make sup for in class, experience, positioning, confidence, 6th sense and sheer presence. I agree, right now Aguero seems the better pick but what has Ibra done to make you lose faith in his ability to keep scoring. He's battle hardened and loves his trade ... he's nailed, fit and not prone to injury and if Mou keeps playing Rashford on a wing then the crosses will come. He almost scored from a Rashford cross against Watford but hit the side net ... on another day he could have had 10 points easily.

      Stoke. Are. Terrible.

I don't think Aguero and Ibra are even comparable in FPL terms. City are light years ahead in an attacking sense at the moment.

Put Ibra in the City team and I'd have him in mine. But he's not. He's playing with Rooney and a disfunctional United team unable to press and win the ball back. I simply think he's way overpriced at 11.5m.

Ibra at City would be amazing to witness, but almost a waste given City's current team ... they're fast and small and probbaly not suited to Ibra's style. I don't disagree TS but i just think that people underestimate Zlatan and United. Mou will turn it around and they'll find a settled formation soon. Mata and Mkhi could be the difference.

          1. Twisted Saltergater

I think Mou will have to do something radical like start Rashford through the middle, and allow Ibra to drop deeper orchestrating things. He can still time runs into the box and find space, but have Rashford stretch the defence more.

I think the idea is that Martial and Mata play narrow with Valencia and Shaw providing the width (similar to Spurs I guess), but United don't have the players to press effectively. Ibra, Rooney, Pogba, Carrick, Fellaini - they're all positional type players. They're hugely missing a Barry, Gueye, Wanyama, Kante type.

I genuinely can't see United scoring more than the odd goal until things change.

He also had another header in the box which looked a certain goal excellently saved by a Gomes reflex save.

OP thinks Shawcross is suddenly Chiellini or Maldini in his prime, lol.

I'm more of the opinion that Shawcross is already having nightmares about Ibra, and unless he resorts to biting Zlatan in the box, it's going to be a long night for him.

Ibrahimovic doesn't play at much more than walking pace anyway, never has done. Stamina therefore isn't an issue for him. An injury might be, the body recovers slower the older you get.

Zlatan relies on class, technique, superb positioning, brilliant finishing and excellence in the air. All of those he still has.

He's like Pirlo or Terry. Players you can't judge by normal standards.

I'd say the same of Van Persie, albeit not so powerful in the hair. He moved on from United at just 31.

He's going to struggle. There'll be flashes of brilliance, but I'm guessing not enough for people to keep at 11.8m.

          Your logic is flawed buddy.

Unless you have each players medical reports you can't compare the two based on just one common dominator being age.

Some players are genetically stronger, quicker, smarter or naturally recover better and faster. Comparing Ibra to RVP, or more to your point, predicting his demise based on that of RVP's just because they are both over 30, and similar players, is a little crazy to be honest.

And for what it's worth, I think RVP had very powerful hair. 😉

So this is me on a -4, obvious deficiencies down back, Shaw injury concern, Pieters and Stones both dropped for their last PL matches and Amat playing City.

Options are if Shaw is confirmed out I could AOA with Snoddy and play Stones and Friend and hope for the best, take another hit for a defender (not keen) or hit WC and try an sort it proper. Any feedback most welcome....

    Foster
    Shaw Stones Friend
    Ozil Antonio Capoue Townsend
    Aguero Ibra Lukaku

I have been very critical of Sterling in the past and still in two minds as to whether he has the game to sustain this level of form on a consistent basis but tbf to the kid his form now is undeniable 🙁

king agree w/ u. he was so incosustent last yr, didnt play well for england neither.
he had flashes of talent w liverpool. but this mci team is deadly, and he is consistent , then saving that 2.3+ from kdb is huge

tinkering w idea of goin sterl over kdb

I don't own him but I am sold on him as an fpl asset when he plays.

I'm still not convinced he's nailed on long term with Pep known to rotate his squad and competition for Sterling's spot in the form of Nolito, Sane, Navas, Silva, KDB etc.

ya could go that way, but don't u think a punt on chadli or double liv mid for a week atleast could definitely bring in more points this week?

        baines 5m holebas amat kelly
        sanchez capoue sterling sterling firmino

Firmino is in the box more, shooting more, creating more chances. It's not that close in my opinion.

Firmino for me, better underlying stats.

Order of preference for attack double ups
    1. City
    2. Pool
    3. Arsenal

2 and 3 are close but a lot of uncertainty with gooners midfield. Thinking Sterling Kun Mane and Firmino. Sanchez in there too. What ye think?

      123 in that order

      1

      2
      3

Arsenal would be higher if there was a viable 2nd option. Walcott if guaranteed to start with Ramsey being back I'd take over any Pool mid.

Exactly this Walcott points per minute every year are so good just does not play enough. This would reverse 2 and 3. Monitoring Walcott situation. Thanks.

I think this is an easy 123.
Who are you thinking of a double up on Arsenal?

Ah gotcha. I think right now with form and fixtures in mind I would take a Liverpool double up (out of 3 or 4 players) over Sanchez and any other Arsenal player.

Of course if Ozil starts performing, Walcott gets minutes, etc. then it's a different story.

Assuming you've got double city then? Kun + Sterling?

No but there will be a new release "Finding Mou a job" if he does not keep his rants to the dressing room. Has he learnt nothing. I think his own ego is eating him at this stage.

Exactly! How do you lose the dressing rooms to 2 of the biggest clubs in England. Its almost a repeat of what happened to Chelsea last season

It's starting to look similar to last year. when your team lose man up take it you the chin. Sulking like a baby and having a go at everyone else helps nobody.
