Spurs are woeful and Leicester resolute on a night of diminished Champions League returns for the English sides. Here’s how the rather insignificant amount of action played out.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1

Spurs slipped to third in their group after another nervy and unconvincing attempt to make Wembley their Champions League home.

Eric Dier (5.2) hit the bar from a free-kick and Dele Alli (8.2) might have had a penalty, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were otherwise outplayed, hurried when in possession and stretched when without, as the visitors out-shot them by 11 attempts to nine.

More worryingly, they are now winless in six matches in all competitions and have scored just twice in their last five – and both of those were from penalties.

With Erik Lamela (6.7) missing out due to a hip problem, Pochettino recalled midfielder Moussa Sissoko (6.7), who is still banned domestically. Striker Vincent Janssen (7.7) dropped to the bench and full back Danny Rose (5.9) was rested, presumably with Sunday’s North London derby in mind – Ben Davies (4.8) took his place.

Janssen was soon involved, however, as Mousa Dembele (5.4) went off with a knock, which meant a return to midfield for Heung-Min Son (7.5). The South Korean, who has failed to score in his last four league starts, was a peripheral figure throughout. Close to 90,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have now cut their losses on him this week alone.

With their injury list slowly growing, Spurs’ squad is starting to look rather thin. They have sorely missed the goals of Harry Kane (10.7) is recent weeks and the England man’s possible return from an ankle injury for the weekend’s match at Arsenal cannot come soon enough.

However, with Pochettino confirming a twisted ankle for Dembele, he’ll be a major doubt for Sunday’s clash – we all know by now the impact that his absence can have on Spurs and, in particular, Kane’s scoring rate.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Dembélé (Janssen 30), Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen (Winks 66), Son (Nkoudou 73).
Subs not used: Vorm, Rose, Nkoudou, Onomah, Carter-Vickers.

FC Copenhagen 0 Leicester City 0

Sometimes the stats say it all: two teams; 29 attempts between them; only three on target. Result? Goalless draw.

But that was an outcome which suited Leicester just fine, with the Foxes needing just one more point from two matches to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Coach Claudio Ranieri made three changes from the side who scrapped to a draw away at Tottenham, with Luis Hernandez (4.3) in for Danny Simpson (4.9), Daniel Amartey (4.5) replacing Andy King (4.8) and Jeffrey Schlupp (4.9) coming in for Shinji Okazaki (5.7).

Islam Slimani (8.4), still struggling with a groin injury, didn’t even travel, which meant another start for the in-form Ahmed Musa (7.0).

The Foxes became the first side to keep a clean sheet in their first four Champions League matches, and it was no surprise that Ranieri reserved much of his praise for Kasper Schmeichel (5.0), who produced a fine late save to secure the draw.

City are now starting to replicate their Euro form in the Premier League. A good run of forthcoming fixtures – West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Watford and Sunderland – could prompt investment in the champions, particularly at the back.

Ranieri would seem unlikely to be concerned with resting players for Sunday’s meeting with West Brom given that an international break now looms.

However, the likes of Marc Albrighton (5.1) and Okazaki will be pushing for recalls, while Simpson would seem likely to slot in at right-back. Hernandez, Schlupp and perhaps Musa look the most likely to come under threat.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernández, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs, Mahrez, Amartey, Drinkwater, Schlupp (Okazaki 71), Vardy, Musa.
Subs not used: Zieler, King, Albrighton, Simpson, Okazaki, Gray, Ulloa.

I'd go B. Walcott is a doubt plus Coutinho has the easier fixture. Fuchs is most likely to get a clean sheet but clean sheets are hard to predict this season.

Firmino was the first name on my teamsheet this season. I even kept him whilst I wildcarded in GW3 during the time he was fairly anonymous.

Is it fair to say he has underperformed so far? He has been ok but not spectacular.

I even had to bring in Coutinho the other week and double up as Bobby F's points weren't covering his.

Looking at the fixtures there is no possible way I could sell him but if he is only going to get the odd 5 and 6 points here and there I am massively tempted to switch him to Hazard.

Will he come good? Playing as "striker" in a free scoring Liverpool team you kind of expect a bit more from him.

He's done pretty well, IMO - probably marginally better than expected (also speaking as an owner from GW1).

At 8.5m you don't expect a captaincy option and he's been a little unlucky in the games I've seen not to score more.

      1. Pariße
        • 10 Years

I expected much more and the 8.5m price tag for a player playing closest to the goal in a top class team seemed like a joke. Even now if his form goes up he's definitely a premium player with a ridiculous price.

Indeed. Coutinho looks a better option atm and has been from the start given the points and price. They're both 8.6m now and we can hope he starts performing as we expected him to, although in general we know Cout is the better player.

Give him, Coutinho and Alexis until GW 15. Then chop one of them.

      Or get Costa.

Yes, maybe a bit disappointing compared to Coutinho, but he can get double digits almost any game, so he's not leaving my team any time soon. Double up with Coutinho is the best option imo

I've owned him every GW and been reasonably happy with him. He should have had more goals and assists from his stats but he's still given me 15 and 12 point hauls for 8.5m. Happy to keep him for the foreseeable future

He'll come good, Firmino would actually have a lot more points if Coutinho and Mane finished better. Coutinho has missed at least 4 big sitters on a plate he got from Firmino, the latest being that Palace header that hit the post.

City, Leicester and Chelsea all have a great run of fxtures coming up. With that in mind, which transfer looks best?

    A. Williams to Stones
    B. Williams to Morgan
    C. Walker to Fuchs
    D. Walker to Azpilicueta

I was thinking maybe A this week and either C or D next week?

This is not ideal but have Walcott and Shaqiri and zero funds. If Shaqiri is not confirmed as fit, I'm thinking...
Shaq & Capoue to Allen (bench) & Gundogan (-4).

I know it's band wagon but covers a Walcott no show and should help raise funds. Have Sanchez, Aguero, Coutinho, Costa and Lukaku.

Already made and happy with my 2FT’s Son & Deeney -> Coutinho & Austin.

My question is what do you do when price rises and falls are about to stop your next planned transfer(s)?

I want to swap Sterling & Lallana -> Hazard & Allen, but both are probably going to rise plus people are ditching Sterling before MID! and he’s looks to be falling. The problem is if this happens I would need to downgrade another player and take another hit to make this happen. I most are dead against taking a hit but would you just take the -8 before I get priced out? Never normally do anything this crazy but I'm tempted.

    Current team:

    Grant

    Vertongen Morgan Koscielny

    Sterling Sánchez Coutinho Lallana

    Costa Aguero Austin

      • 14 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

i definitely wouldnt do that with sterlig and lallana both prime fixtures. If you are absolutely despo to do it next week you can still do it then by taking a minus 8 then as well by finding an extra 0.1/0.2 downgrading the defence so it will cost the same points next week in any case

      1. M00N
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Thats the hard part the fixtures look good, amazed Sterling is dropping so quickly to be honest. I'm thinking more long term but like you said -8 this week could be the same next and if I hold my nerve with the price changes it might only be a -4.

I still have my wildcard and am planning to use it around GW 14/15.

A lot of teams (that I care about) have a change in strength of fixtures around this time: Chelsea, West Ham, Spurs, Southampton all have improved fixtures after a tougher run whilst, Everton, Arsenal and WBA all have worsening fixtures.

Might scrap the Fuchs plan and just play Holebas. Roll the transfers and see how things are after the break.

      Hi
Current team (for this weekend) is
      Heaton (Pickford)
      Fuchs Shaw Lovren Keane (Friend)
      Sanchez Coutinho Walcott Allen (Capoue)
      Aguero(c) Deeney (Rashford)

Here Walcott to Firmino can be done for free.

      Thinking of playing WC
      Heaton (Grant)
      Smith Pieters Lowton (Holebas McAuley)
      Sanchez Firmino Coutinho Allen (Capoue)
      Aguero(c) Costa Lukaku

WC team is 99.9 my current TV is 100.0 exactly.
Should I play WC now or wait till the int. break as prices are now continuously rising.
      Any suggestions?

Current team looks ok to me. Only 2 or 3 changes needed, so I wouldn't spend a wildcard on those, though might be worth a -4 hit to bring in one of Costa or Lukaku.

          What changes would you suggest?
I was thinking of bringing in Harry Kane when he's back and Spurs have easing fixtures around GW15. Only concern is Spurs are in a slump right now, hope it's over soon.

IF chasing a mini league and everyone else has Coutinho, do I...
      A) bring him in to avoid dropping further behind,
      B) go for Firminho as a differential? PS already have Mane, who can also be said to be a differential...

Pick any one and keep for rest few GWs. Very good fixtures coming up.

I had the same problem and went for Cout to cover others. Hes too good to pass and Id get nothing being stubborn. Reckon Manes explosiveness is enough of a differential.

Stoke are going to put up a fight on the weekend, Payet doesn't want to fight this season.

So, as we all know Aguero is increasing his work-rate, his movement and his involvement under Guardiola. I'm taking this as true, supported by: increased distance covered, increased number of passes and my general impressions from watching matches / Guardiola's press conferences. (Happy to have the discussion if people don't think this is true)

I haven't seen much regarding what this actually means for Aguero or for Man City as a whole so, here are my (current) thoughts:

      Aguero:
I have two comments on Aguero. Firstly, from watching the matches it felt like Aguero was taking more shots from outside the box; which the stats back up (dropping from 80% to around 60%). This makes me worry that his conversion may drop off; although I'm not brave enough to bet against him knocking them in from range. On the other hand, he is getting more involved in games and therefore his assist potential has to increase; he has two assists over the last three matches which equals his entire (premierleague) assist haul for last season. Not going to lie, I don't really understand BPS but, I'd imagine being more involved in play increases your chance of bonus points (against WBA I know it was only the 2nd time this season he passed the 30 passes mark to get the potential extra BPS).

      Man City:
Following on from Aguero's increasing influence and assist potential this can only be a benefit to his teammates around him. He is undoubtedly world class and if he can get more involved in link up play this can surely only mean his team mates will have better chances and score more goals. Do they have less chance of bonus points? Maybe, like I said I have only a vague idea of how BPS works.

Does this raise the appeal of KdB replacing Aguero to fund a 3-5-2? Does this mean Gundogan's sudden scoring spree isn't a coincidence? Should we start bringing in more Man City assets? These are some of the questions I don't know how to begin answering.

I'd love some other opinions on what (if anything) Aguero's change in attitude means for City and his own prospects!

TLDR; Ageuro's changing role could increase his own and all City returns.

Took Aguero out last week as it brought better balance to my team. Will get KDB in this week as I think he will provide better value.

Pep really demands more than 100% from him.
Was pleases to see him chasing and winning possession in the opponent's half.
Both his goals against Barca just reminded everyone of his quality both inside and outside the box.
Pep is spoiled for choice and so are we! 😀
Only concern is defence, but with a great run of PL fixtures coming up, shouldn't be much of a concern as of now.

Good anlysis, but I'll certainly be keeping him. If he goes from scoring freely to assisting Gündogan, that's fine with me as a Stones, Gundogan, and Aguero owner 🙂

I own the same three! Just worried Aguero will be less involved in fantasy terms despite being more involved on the pitch. Definitely won't be making a transfer for a few weeks but, will continue to monitor the situation!

Makes me more inclined to only invest 5m in Leic def for Morgan, or alternatively go for Stones who plays for City, who has the best def stats of the alternatives(Leic/Livp/South).
