Suspensions

With the Christmas programme effectively now underway and games coming thick and fast, so too are the unwelcome cards and suspensions. All the more reason then to keep an eye on the Opta stats available in the members’ area and the new suspension tightrope at the bottom of the sidebar.

With said tightrope already showing the cards from today, you’ll find 2 names now missing from the list; Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season for fouls committed in games against Wolves and Swansea respectively; they will sit out the midweek fixtures of gameweek 17.

As if the trip to the Etihad for Tony Pulis’ men could get any more difficult, they’ll now have to take on league leaders Manchester City without their influential skipper, and the omens are not good as the last time Shawcross was missing in the league for Stoke, they were thrashed 5-0 at Bolton. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s resources will again be tested by Cabaye’s absence. Already without Guthrie (injured) and Gosling (suspended), Alan Pardew will be glad of Cheick Tiote’s return today to shore things up, but he’ll need to field his fourth different midfield pair in four games when West Brom are the visitors to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

As always on the Suspension Tightrope, there is a constant stream of new faces eager to backfill where others have left, and this week it’s the turn of Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton), Danny Murphy (Fulham), Kyle Naughton (Norwich) and Paul Scharner (WBA) to take up their places, each earning their fourth yellow card of the season for ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the games today. Martin Jol especially will be sweating over the availability of his Fulham quartet over the Christmas period.

GAMEWEEK 17 BANS

  • David Wheater (Bolton) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 4 matches)
  • Jay Spearing (Liverpool) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle) – 5 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Second of 3 matches)
  • Ryan Shawcross (Stoke) – 5 Yellows (1 match)

Jones and Walters to JEvans and VDV for a 4pt hit??

    Current team is
    Vorm. Al-habsi
    Jones, Jagielka, Enrique, Boyata, Wilkinson
    Mata, Nani, Bale, Walters, Allen

And you, my friend, need a lecture in the ways of politeness.

Royals Forever, I can see why you want to bench Sturridge with a tough match away against Tottenham, but I doubt all four of your chosen defensive players will get a clean sheet, goal or assist. Better to pick the three you feel have the best chances in the next gameweek (Jones, Enrique, Simpson) and hope Sturridge is on fire against Tottenham.

i really don't see why you can pick 5 defenders

    i never ever play 5

they should reduce them to 4 and add another attacking player spot

A few seasons ago I used to play 5-2-3 quite often. But another striker spot would be lovely this season.

Me too. I don't know what has changed really, but back then the big defenders would deliver more consistantly better than the cheaper ones. I loved the 523

Think it was the season where Anelka was top score with only 17 or 19 (around there anyway). The top teams just kept so many clean sheets and top strikers just weren't scoring. Quite liked the 5-2-3. Looked good.

Make the most of it while you can, because I won't be saying things like this too often.

I really wish that AVB was (perhaps he is and we just haven't seen it yet) more like Ferguson. As much as he [Ferguson] is a nasty piece of work, one thing he has always done at United is to not let any player think they are bigger than United, all the players that have - Beckham, Stam, van Nistlerooy - have been sent packing pretty soon after. Desperately hoping that AVB will do the same with some of the current crop of Chelsea players, namely Lampard and Drogba. These two, with their utterly pathetic and non-existent performances, are holding the club back massively.

Take the incident on Monday, where Lampard stole the penalty away from Mata despite Mata being the designated penalty taker for the game. Who does he think he is?! And then moaning to the media about how AVB hasn't told him why he was dropped and how he can't understand it. Firstly, it's blatantly obvious why you were dropped, secondly, why should AVB *have* to explain himself?!

As for Drogba, he simply doesn't have the physical advantage over Premier League defenders anymore to be a consistent threat in this league, and, as has always been the case, his attitude in the "easier" games is absolutely pathetic. Today he was a total disgrace.

Torres was showing some decent form earlier on the season, Drogba has shown next to nothing in the league this season. I firmly believe that AVB would rather play Torres, but player power is stopping him from doing so.

AVB is a twat, in my considered opinion. Can't blame the players for the mess that Chelsea find themselves in. AND, if you did, the first on that list would be John Terry ... sorry.

AVB is way smarter than you give him credit for, he's playing damage control internally, and will swoop when the time is right. As silly as it sounds to me, people still love and respect Frank, and you have to give the people the impression you're giving them what they want. But it should be obvious to any cultured eye that Frank is a mess. He's mentally and emotionally stuck in a different era of football that has no bearing on the current game or his effort level. John Terry at least puts forth the effort. He can't afford not to. Frank is the laziest poacher in the game...and he's NOT a striker. You simply can not have a midfielder with a poacher's mentality and the defensive effort of VDV. Sorry Doos, you're wrong brah. Every single player that AVB coached is straight doing work at their current clubs. Would have served him well to have transplanted one of them.

OK. Suit yourselves. I don't agree with either of you, about either issue. I personally think that some of you Chelsea fans have got a rather silly bee in your bonnet about Frank - and that is your loss. But ... it takes all sorts ...

I will just be happy to welcome him back to a newly promoted West Ham United ... 😉

I do agree with your point that AVB needs time to get rid of the old guard, but frankly, the chelsea team was bought and build on sand in 2003 and RA's insistence on buying 'star' players like Torres and Shevchenko and replacing the manager every 12 months is indicative of your current problems. Bed has been made, will take a long time of transition to get out of it.

It's no coincidence that both Torres and Shevchenko have failed at Chelsea. The fault lies with certain midfielders who like to pass the ball around very very slowly.

Depends on how much your benefactor is willing to invest, and how much Chelsea can actually spend in order to comply with the FFP rules.

Sacking Villas-Boas won't help either, although I'll enjoy the myth-busting if Hiddink is brought back.

What happened to film sessions? Tell the assh*le why he is being dropped and dare him to act dumbfounded...now Doos, Mancini is a real twat, you think he would be playing this game with Frank? Sometimes a twat is what you really need to be. Juan Mata could have taken a note from that...'my peno asshle!!'

I don't think Terry (the player) is nearly the problem that people like to make out, but if we have to get rid of him to get rid of Drogba, Lampard, Malouda etc. - I'm all for it.

John Terry isn't a one-man army, he's just the alpha of that contingent.

You're right, Chelsea need to get shot of the lot of them. They're all over the hill as it is.

Agree with everything you said...I've been telling moth*rf*ckers that he (Fatboy Grim) is a team cancer. Personally I would have delt him to an equally hubristically stupid coach dumb enough to trade a good youngin...I'm speaking of David Moyes (Ross Barkley for fat Frank). Drogba would just marinade on the pine until he took a deal with the MLS or a that Thai team with Frank Messi. Putting Torres on this currently styled team is like putting Lebron on that Karl Malone Utah Jazz team.

Agree largely, not many options for AVB tho. Was wondering today why Bosingwa was in, then realised Luiz was out, but there was nobody else. The bench is often a good gauge of a team's strength - Turnbull, Ferreira, Mikel, Malouda, McEachran, Torres, Kalou. Not hot.
