Suspensions

With the Christmas programme effectively now underway and games coming thick and fast, so too are the unwelcome cards and suspensions. All the more reason then to keep an eye on the Opta stats available in the members’ area and the new suspension tightrope at the bottom of the sidebar.

With said tightrope already showing the cards from today, you’ll find 2 names now missing from the list; Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season for fouls committed in games against Wolves and Swansea respectively; they will sit out the midweek fixtures of gameweek 17.

As if the trip to the Etihad for Tony Pulis’ men could get any more difficult, they’ll now have to take on league leaders Manchester City without their influential skipper, and the omens are not good as the last time Shawcross was missing in the league for Stoke, they were thrashed 5-0 at Bolton. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s resources will again be tested by Cabaye’s absence. Already without Guthrie (injured) and Gosling (suspended), Alan Pardew will be glad of Cheick Tiote’s return today to shore things up, but he’ll need to field his fourth different midfield pair in four games when West Brom are the visitors to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

As always on the Suspension Tightrope, there is a constant stream of new faces eager to backfill where others have left, and this week it’s the turn of Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton), Danny Murphy (Fulham), Kyle Naughton (Norwich) and Paul Scharner (WBA) to take up their places, each earning their fourth yellow card of the season for ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the games today. Martin Jol especially will be sweating over the availability of his Fulham quartet over the Christmas period.

GAMEWEEK 17 BANS

  • David Wheater (Bolton) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 4 matches)
  • Jay Spearing (Liverpool) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle) – 5 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Second of 3 matches)
  • Ryan Shawcross (Stoke) – 5 Yellows (1 match)

I just find it very interesting somebody would choose a Newcastle striker as captain with all the other big guns available.

RvP with his toughest test of the season, Rooney not owned by many on here anymore and is Adebayor a big gun? He is although not in price. Ba wasn't top of the poll for nothing.

Personally I would have listed Rooney, Nani, Aguero, Silva, Sturridge, Mata, Adebayor. Bale and Suarez all ahead of Ba when it came to captain choice.

              .... It is Newcastle, remember.

He was still an excellent choice today going into the week. On another day he'd have scored a hatful. We move on.

    repost

ok lost major ground in my ML today, but hoping VdV and Nani can claw it back. Wasn’t planning on making any changes for this gw, but does anyone think I need to

    Vorm/Westwood

    BAE, Jones, Raylor, Brown, McAuley

    Tiote, Silva, Bale, VdV, Nani

    RvP, Ba, Yak.

    0.7 in bank 1 free

am actually contemplating RvP- Rooney for GW18, only other way I could do it would be to lose about 6 million from my midfield.

I wouldn't get rid of RVP. You may want to wait to see what the extent of the Raylor injury is too. Midfield looks nice, so I wouldn't change it and with Nani you have some United attacking coverage anyway. United have only had one decent game vs Wolves, see what how they do tomorrow before deciding!

good call on Raylor, hopefully we'll find out on Monday. Beyond that I can't see anything worth addressing until GW18 when I may take Yak out, but hoping to have 2 frees.

Kept him and HBA, was gutted when I checked the teamsheets on twitter - chuffed when I noticed Drenthe actually got some points.

Might have to get rid of Ben Arfa though, somethings rotten in the state of Denmark.

Ben Atfa should have had a run out too if you ask me, we were crying out for someone with a killer pass pr a bit of imagination, these are the games when Ben Arfa should shine. I think Ba could score well against West Brom anyway, he was very unlucky today

Could be alright, he seems like a bit of a moody git so maybe something's happened with Pardew. Vuckic came on at the end too, he had a few nice touches, he's gona be quality in a season or two...and then he'll be off the first good offer they get

To clear up a rumour that appeared in the British press in the last few days, Hans-Joachim Watzke, the CEO of Borussia Dortmund, said this evening: "There is no offer from Manchester United for Mats Hummels and Mario Götze. Even if there were, no chance. €100m would not be enough."

Chelsea are still interested in Dortmund defender Neven Subotić though, it appears.

yes BUT! Dortmund recently signed a ready made talented replacement for Gotze, so they could just be wanting to drive the price up. If Utd are interested, there's no way they'd want anyone else to know, so i think it's them denying rumours but actually wanting to create more interest, if that makes any sense. They are out of the CL and not guaranteed to get back in next year, so 30m+ could be very handy indeed for them.

They look a sure thing for the Champions Leagu next season! They're doing well and there are 4 spots up for grabs in Germany now. Munich, Dortmund, Schalke and hopefully Gladbach.

Eriksen looking more likely, and I rate him just as highly. Still wouldn't get my hopes up though, he seems to be holding out for Barca. I'd "willy sneeze" if Javi Martinez was signed. I've been saying it for a long time now.

Shaqiri is interesting, PFOR - I really rate him. A Swiss journalist of my acquaintance told me that Chelsea put in an €8 million bid for him in the summer which was turned down by the club. Shaqiri's agent is also playing hard to get - he's also turned down Hamburger SV and a couple of Italian clubs. Atlético Madrid is the latest club with whom Shaqiri's been linked.

I really like the look of him. We need a new winger who brings something different (I'd prefer someone left-footed). Gaitan at €40 million is scary money and unlikely considering centre-mid is the main area it looks unlikely.

How much do you think he'd go for, €12-15 million?

Atlético have apparently offered €8 million, which sounds like a typical opening gambit. Basel might have be willing to sell for a figure between €10-13 million a few months ago, but qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League should raise that figure a bit higher.

One more thing, this FC Sion saga. What's the situation? Is is just the British press jumping on the possibility of United getting a second chance, or is there a chance? I doubt they'd allow Basel be disqualified, would be incredibly harsh.

No chance of it happening. It's sabre-rattling by FIFA, who along with UEFA should be dealing with the matter themselves. FIFA are based in Switzerland and are subject to Swiss law. The Swiss courts are not going to take too kindly to FIFA taking action against the Swiss FA for not ignoring one of their decisions. The Swiss courts will ultimately force FIFA to back down. FIFA could then use this as a reason to move out of Switzerland, which Blatter has been threatening to do for years for financial / taxation reasons, but that's a separate issue.

The problem here is that FC Sion’s president, Christian Constantin, is an architect who knows every legal loophole in the book. He has won big legal challenges twice before. In 1997, Constantin managed to force a UEFA Cup tie to be replayed by proving that Spartak Moscow’s crossbars were 8cm too low. In 2003, he took the Swiss League to court to demand that Sion be reinstated into the second division – which meant they absurdly were added to the league 12 games into the season.

So Constantin isn’t going to back down from a legal challenge, no matter how obscure it may be, and the Swiss FA will have no success if they are forced by FIFA to act against him on their own. Only FIFA/UEFA sanctions against Sion will work here. Not sure how they're going to resolve this one, but re-instating Man Utd isn't going to be part of the solution.

              Unfortunately you're probably right.

Basically every German superstar ends up at Munich or one of the Spanish duo. Imagine Munich with this (almost) all German line-up.

              __________Neuer________
              Rafinha Hummels Boateng Lahm
              Reus Kroos Schweinsteiger Götze
              __________Muller_____________
              __________Gomez____________

Wouldn't put it past them, that's right up there with Madrid.

Not during the January transfer window, although Podolski is pushing for a move away from the Bundesliga. It would be a poor transfer for Arsenal for a whole number of reasons, and I don't think that Wenger would want to pay through the nose for a diva who really only flourishes in counter-attacking formations.

I'm telling thee - Sturridge LWF Rooney CF Walcott RWF , all constantly interchanging could be fecking marvellous at Euro2012. All that pace and movement would be a right arse for defenders. I'd love it.
If only Cabaye, Tiote and Romeu were English, the only ones with the brains and/or industry to allow that formation.

I'm going to agree with this. Welbeck is the best of an embarrassingly bad bunch that sit behind Rooney.

Sturridge's inability to play through the middle effectively means he's competing with Young, Walcott, Johnson and Milner, who are all better than him.

Too small, too weak, too lazy. he'd get gobbled up as a lone striker.

He's making a case for himself as a wide forward, but his lack of experience and all-round contribution is counting against him.

A lone striker? Well yeah i guess he would but there are very few of those top quality forwards about. When you said play through the middle i didn't realise you meant on his own. I was thinking more 2 up front (yeah i know, i'm old fashioned)

How the feck did I get a red arrow after captaining Sturridge?
I did take a 4 point hit so maybe that explains it....plus lots of people would've played Vorm and/or Newcastle defender.
I'm worried I won't get a green arrow as most of the players I have left to play have high ownership...

True, Sturridge is a selfish and lazy bugger. Not that those are bad qualities for a striker if you're skilled like he is.

What do you make of your team's substitutions? Watched the second half and this was my initial interpretation of each one:

            Romeu > Kalou 46'
Simply a defensive mid off for an attacking one, to grab a goal.

            Mata > Mikel 66'
Goal grabbed, AVB decided he had to rectify the temporary imbalance and took an attacking mid off for a defensive mid to bring us back to square one.

            Sturridge > Malouda 80'
Basically your reason, Sturridge wasn't moving the same way, I actually thought he might have a niggle or something but could be wrong, so like-for-like sub. Didn't realize Malouda had defence qualities though! 😉

AVB wanted more protection from the midfield I pressume. Couldnt understand why they let Wigan control the match and just sit back for the whole second half 😕

Wigan didn't just control the second half. They controlled the whole bloody match! ðŸ™

He has been for pretty much the best part of two months at this stage. Him and Ba are incredible bargains.

Are you only just realising that Sturridge gets a game, scores goals and is cheap??

8 key passes today from L.L. Baines... Although worryingly only one corner (out of 13 total) taken.

I kept on seeing Leon bloody Osman's name popping up on the corners. And that Gueye guy who never left the fallers page of Footy Tools all of last season.

        😀

Magaye Gueye - best known for remaining on the fallers page on totalFPL.com all season without falling.
