Suspensions

With the Christmas programme effectively now underway and games coming thick and fast, so too are the unwelcome cards and suspensions. All the more reason then to keep an eye on the Opta stats available in the members’ area and the new suspension tightrope at the bottom of the sidebar.

With said tightrope already showing the cards from today, you’ll find 2 names now missing from the list; Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season for fouls committed in games against Wolves and Swansea respectively; they will sit out the midweek fixtures of gameweek 17.

As if the trip to the Etihad for Tony Pulis’ men could get any more difficult, they’ll now have to take on league leaders Manchester City without their influential skipper, and the omens are not good as the last time Shawcross was missing in the league for Stoke, they were thrashed 5-0 at Bolton. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s resources will again be tested by Cabaye’s absence. Already without Guthrie (injured) and Gosling (suspended), Alan Pardew will be glad of Cheick Tiote’s return today to shore things up, but he’ll need to field his fourth different midfield pair in four games when West Brom are the visitors to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

As always on the Suspension Tightrope, there is a constant stream of new faces eager to backfill where others have left, and this week it’s the turn of Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton), Danny Murphy (Fulham), Kyle Naughton (Norwich) and Paul Scharner (WBA) to take up their places, each earning their fourth yellow card of the season for ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the games today. Martin Jol especially will be sweating over the availability of his Fulham quartet over the Christmas period.

GAMEWEEK 17 BANS

  • David Wheater (Bolton) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 4 matches)
  • Jay Spearing (Liverpool) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle) – 5 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Second of 3 matches)
  • Ryan Shawcross (Stoke) – 5 Yellows (1 match)

In a H2H league. I'm on 27 points, he's on 13 points. The differences between our teams are I have Adebayor, RVP and Nani to play, he has Rooney, Aguero and Nani (C) to play. Who do you fancy?

I think one of that trio will be sold, and I'm saying Lavezzi to City.

Have an each way bet. They are a great counter attacking team and that will suit them against the slow build up of Chelsea but once they come up against the Spanish teams their defence wont stand up to the pressure.

You guys are aware it's Eduardo Vargas from Universidad de Chile right, and not Eduardo Vargas from Fiorentina?

Just asking since I don't know much about this player myself, but Napoli are pretty desperate for a good backup in their attacking trio.

If we say Agger = Enrique, then it comes down to:

Rooney, Rooney, BAE, Adebayor vs Jones, Nani, Lennon, Silva + 6 points.

In what sense? He's not a midfield powerhouse in the keane/vieira/robson/ince ilk but they don't really exist anymore. Utd have too much pressure on the wingers to provide for Rooney + Hernandez at the moment and Gaitan leads the assist count in europe currently. Would be a very shrewd signing imo. Also makes sense if you think that we missed out on Nasri, then Sneijder for different reasons.

He's South American, and plays centrally.

Okay, Lord Ferg has bought Veron*, Kleberson and Anderson in the past, but two of those were pretty officially flops, while Anderson was A) brought in with no immediate first team pressures and B) at a younger age, in order to get good value, considering he'd take a at least a year to settle in. And on top of all this, the jury is still very much out on him.

Because Gaitan will take at least a year to adapt to the league, etc, it seems strange that Lord Ferg (often so ruthless when putting out fires like United's midfield problem) would go for a longer term player, who would also be quite a gamble.

*Veron cost a similar amount, yet had loads more experience in a better league than the Portuguese one.

Well fergie often goes for players who perform well against Utd, and Gaitan did that in Benfica. I think Gaitan would be expected to settle in pretty fast considering it would be a club record fee, and he has 2 years CL experience. There's no easy fix to the utd midfield problem as they need both an attacking mid and defensive one now too.

I don't think Ferguson has really found a creative centre mid he's liked since was pinched Ramsey a few years back.

Why do you think he'd go for Gaitan over Eriksen though?

Availability? Maybe Eriksen doesn't want to come to england, who knows. Ramsey was hardly going to be the answer to the midfield problems, he was bought (or not) for the future potential. We still had Scholes lording it up at that point.

Was about to ask this as well, curious about which Everton players will people be getting for the DGW. I know the answer will still probably Royston but I cant justify getting anyone with their current form, even Baines. Would feel silly not to have at least 1 Toffee so probably going to punt on Donovan if he's classed as a mid 😐

Oh, thought he would. Fair point then.
Still he'll be classed as a forward, and so joins the likes of Hoilett as a player I'd consider if they were a mid.

2 free transfers this week. What does everyone think?
Thinking Mata to Adam considering Liverpool's upcoming games- was thinking Dempsey but fixtures don't look great for him
    Kompany to Vermalean/Caulkner

Only problem is that I will have no Chelsea cover. Other option just trade out Kompany and re assess the situation with another 2 transfers the week after.

    DGW thoughts

Everton run-in: SWA sun wba BOL/tot
My predictions: win (risky after how both did today!), lose, draw, win/lose

Spurs run-in: CHE nor swa WBA/EVE
My predictions: draw, win, lose, win/win

Both have distinctly average run-ins. Is it really worth getting Everton coverage if they only have one credible match in the DGW? In the other match, can you see them doing anything aside from lose to Spurs away when they lost to Stoke at home and couldn't beat Norwich. Besides, with so few goals at present it's basically Baines, Drenthe and maybe Howard you'd be looking at.

Spurs have two winnable matches and the obvious solution is Ade/Bale/VDV, but since you need to bring them in gradually before the DGW, would you really want to have the lately misfiring Holy Trinity for Swansea away and possibly Norwich away?

BTW forgot to make the point that even Everton's defensive assets are somewhat useless for their inability to keep clean sheets. Not unless Baines goes superman and starts scoring by himself in open play because the forwards can't convert his crosses.

Ramsey yet to play so I would hold off there. A keeper change could be useful but check rotation with your current keeper and see if it is or isn't worth getting Howard

TBH even if Ramsey did the unthinkable and scored (or even assisted) against City it wouldn't change my mind. 4-5 straight 2s against poor opposition have convinced me he's not that kind of pointscoring player. All about the flanks for Arsenal. Got to get rid.

                    Am considering Howard right now!

I really praised him in his early days at Bolton and I might be too hard on him now, but I think he continually lets his creative players rot on the bench to favor a hoofing game.

And after all that nonsense about priding himself on good football.

Bolton aren't playing any more eye-catching stuff under him than they did under Megson. At least Megson kept them out of the bottom 3.

It's harsh but I agree with this in general.

The reason I do is because so many managers have been SLAUGHTERED in the media for doing exactly what Coyle does, but he gets away with it and even still maintains an image of playing good football.

Been torn between both interpretations recently. My take is that he's a decent manager whose decision-making has crumbled in the face of adverse results and expectations. At Burnley with nothing to lose he built a side that punched well above their weight. When he turned Judas on them for Bolton, he said at the time he did so because only they had the size and resources to match his ambitions. (They were a bigger club...) And I think it's plainly clear from the squad he built that his ambitions were to build an exciting, fluid, attacking team... what he didn't plan for was a defence this bad. And in trying to realize these ambitions, I think he's ignored the basic practicalities of not letting in more than the opposition. Bolton have a good squad, it would be one of the best PL squads to be relegated I reckon. Unfortunately, he's been reckless.

And regarding decision-making, obviously I'm biased here as I decided to gamble on Eagles (but that was because I believed in Bolton's attacking instincts) but I think the decision to bench him was insane. He played Muamba and Reo-Coker, neither of which have done toffee, and when he did it I thought "I'm getting a 1 because Bolton will suck so much they'll have to bring Eagles on".

In fairness, the club's 2 best players have been injured, but still, playing Elmander centre mid in the FA cup semi last season was mental.

Can't even begin to imagine why he did that. All I remember was listening on the radio as the fifth goal went in...

The players aren't scoring and the defence hasn't done it's job. Apparently they've conceded more goals from crosses than any other team. Hard to blame the manager with last season's standing. Losing Elamnder and Sturridge has been key just has Bent for SUN. Inevitably, the manager has to carry the can for all of this. Hope they stick with him and show some faith...with a bit of cash to spend.

Kavies needs to be dropped. Kakuta needs to be played. Players need to be bought. Cahill needs to be sold.

Having two freebies will be quite handy for week 18, particularly if there are injuries/rotation/suspension at hand.

Have Schwarzer, have Ramsey. Ramsey will drop tonight - unfortunately my choice of replacement will have to accommodate my keeper choice as I have very little bank. Any suggestions for a mid and keeper costing max 11.8?

Vorm and Walters do the trick in that bracket.

Good shouts people especially on Drenthe. It's Krul, Friedel or (if I'm mad and start believing in Everton CS Howard) for GK. How do you rank them?
