Suspensions

With the Christmas programme effectively now underway and games coming thick and fast, so too are the unwelcome cards and suspensions. All the more reason then to keep an eye on the Opta stats available in the members’ area and the new suspension tightrope at the bottom of the sidebar.

With said tightrope already showing the cards from today, you’ll find 2 names now missing from the list; Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season for fouls committed in games against Wolves and Swansea respectively; they will sit out the midweek fixtures of gameweek 17.

As if the trip to the Etihad for Tony Pulis’ men could get any more difficult, they’ll now have to take on league leaders Manchester City without their influential skipper, and the omens are not good as the last time Shawcross was missing in the league for Stoke, they were thrashed 5-0 at Bolton. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s resources will again be tested by Cabaye’s absence. Already without Guthrie (injured) and Gosling (suspended), Alan Pardew will be glad of Cheick Tiote’s return today to shore things up, but he’ll need to field his fourth different midfield pair in four games when West Brom are the visitors to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

As always on the Suspension Tightrope, there is a constant stream of new faces eager to backfill where others have left, and this week it’s the turn of Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton), Danny Murphy (Fulham), Kyle Naughton (Norwich) and Paul Scharner (WBA) to take up their places, each earning their fourth yellow card of the season for ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the games today. Martin Jol especially will be sweating over the availability of his Fulham quartet over the Christmas period.

GAMEWEEK 17 BANS

  • David Wheater (Bolton) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 4 matches)
  • Jay Spearing (Liverpool) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)

Hey JD, I think its better to just downgrade to Ruddy since you have Simpson until the winter cs, play Vorm everyweek except gw19 (iirc, Norwich home vs Fulham) and upgrade to someone better than Drenthe.

Christmas transfer strategy! This is a looooong post for a biiiiiiig problem. Here's the big teams to consider.

    Everton GW17 and beyond
Outlook: DGW at GW20 giving 7 fixtures in 6 GWs, 6 fixtures of which are good. Unfortunately Everton, well, suck, so how many of those fixtures have points who knows. Only Baines (pens and assists) and Drenthe look like candidates right now. Goalscoring may pick up with the arrival of Landon Donovan in time for the DGW - risky differential though.
My plans: Just (GW17) did Ramsey > Drenthe hoping for his return from injury to be an explosive one at home to Swansea, who I'm hoping don't have lightning strike twice with a shock away CS.

    United GW18-21
Outlook: After what could be a tricky match at Fulham, United get WIG, BLA, new and BOL followed by a trip to Arsenal which might not be so intimidating for obvious earlier reasons. The three home fixtures could be an absolute massacre and attacking coverage looks vital there. Rooney and Nani are standout candidates. After that, there's a host of mids vying for attention - Young if he reignites, Valencia if he keeps his place in the team, and Cleverley if he returns from injury in time. Keep an eye on Phil Jones too, if he's involved in the attacks you could get both defending and attacking points from him.
My plans: Have Nani and Jones already, after GW17 I'll either get in Rooney for Sturridge or Ade depending on which is doing worse, or get Valencia or Young in if they maintain form. May fund this by downgrading Jones to Evans if his attacking points suffer relative to the reinvigorated attacking midfielders.

    Spurs GW18-21
Outlook: Spurs benefit from the DGW too so they have nor, swa, WBA, EVE and WOL in just 4 GWs. Massive attacking points could be scored against several of these teams. Clearly the Holy Trinity of VDV, Bale and Ade is tempting for this. Personally I feel it's possible that by the time the DGW rolls around only 2/3 will be showing form and it may not be necessary to get all three - it may not make sense at the expense of United and Chelsea coverage. Don't forget Lennon is playing on the other flank from Bale and is in decent form, while fullbacks BAE and Walker might make sense - I see a couple of CS there and more importantly a couple of assists.
My plans: Have Bale and Ade now, currently plan to go into the DGW with either Bale and Ade or Bale and VDV. Probably won't have enough money for a fullback but Lennon is a dark horse option as a downgrade of an underperforming 10.0 mid.

    Chelsea GW18-21
Outlook: FUL, AVL, wol, SUN is a very promising schedule. Strangely, with Fulham unpredictable and Villa being boring but okay defensively, Martin O'Neill back at Sunderland, and Wolves decent at home, thrashings may not happen. If anything, clean sheets may be more likely, but Chelsea defenders are too expensive. Mata and Sturridge are not only the standout options but almost the only regulars you can name in their attack. With the packed schedule even their gametime may be spread around.
My plans: Have Sturridge, and will decide whether to keep or go United coverage or Spurs DGW coverage based on how he does in this period. Mata might be too expensive for me to bring in but leaving him out will be a matter of regret.

      Nice post.

I'm considering Ramsey -> Drenthe this week as well, but ARS have 2 great fixtures after this week so do you not think its worth waiting for the Everton DGW in Week 20 before making that trade?

Of the teams you mention I only have P Jones, Nani & Adebayor - quite happy to ignore EVE (only Drenthe (if fit) is appealing), and will probably have Bale & VDV for the double. From MUN I may double on their backline (Evans and Smalling are great value) and from Chelsea, only Sturridge appeals to me - he comes in this week if Suarez gets banned.

Mmmm... personally I would get rid of Ramsey ASAP. He looked great on paper but my mind was made up to kick him out when he scored 2s and 3s 4-5 times in a row when Arsenal were beating/thrashing all those beatable teams. Again the Arsenal play seems to go down the flanks with Walcott and Gervinho (ish), not the center through Ramsey. He could surprise us all with something in those two great fixtures but unless his role changes they'll just be anomalies...

Your coverage sounds pretty decent - although surely you want to double on MUN attack rather than backline - is money the issue?

You're probably right with Ramsey - I've watched all the Arsenal games (as a gooner) and I do feel he's been a little unlucky. Even this week I fancy us to score a few against Villa, and despite his form he is our most attacking central midfielder, so could well be in the mix.

I'd love to get Rooney in, but I'm not dropping RVP, and Adebayor is great value with Spurs' fixtures and a DGW coming up. That leaves Suarez, who I'd happily trade for Rooney, but I'd need to find 2.6m, and that can only be done by losing Verm, Silva or Nani...any of those worth it do you reckon?

Yeah as a Gooner myself I think Ramsey has played well in the real world, his distribution and passes to the wide players are vital to us, it's just his FPL stats that let him down because he doesn't get enough goalscoring chances due to his role and playing style. There should be some sort of standard disclaimer when I diss a player like " blah blah blah "... lol.

I appreciate your dilemma now. Verm, Silva or Nani... it's a horrible choice. Nani no because he's the likeliest pointscorer for United. The same could kind of be said of Silva and he's all class but in the short-term other people might outscore him. Kind of depends what price you bought Silva so that you can get him back. Verm... great couple of fixtures coming up and normally I'd obviously be well keen on him. Thing is, we have so many injured defenders, I recall Verm being moved to fullback which might limit his scoring chances, and we have African Cup of Nations taking our players away soon - you might just want to reconsider Verm for now.

Haha, I agree with your points on Ramsey. He's had a few chances recently, but yeah he tends to be the distrubutor to Walcott/Gervinho who then tee it up for RVP, rather that him taking shots himself. The other problem is I don't see Drenthe as being any more likely to score points than Ramsey given how average Everton are. Also, is Drenthe even a nailed on starter?

I got Silva in from the start, so 9.5m. That alone almost rules out ditching him. Verm is the only possibility, and I'd only have 4.2m for his replacement - not much there with decent fixtures from GW18 onwards is there?

Appears that to get Rooney I'd have to lose Suarez (BLA) and Verm (WOL), who themselves could score big, and I'd be getting Rooney (WIG) who has the potential to score the biggest, but I'd have to take a budget defender too. Swaying towards leaving the pig out and hoping Nani eats all his points at the mo....

Drenthe is a gamble alright, I tried to justify it by having him as my only gamble in my squad with the others fairly solid performers (cue epic failures all round). Big differential, although it may be for a reason loooools.

There's many decent defs at 4.2m and below, but you're right in thinking there's not many with good fixtures from GW18 onwards.
There is one, maybe two though.
Shotton, 4.0, is now in favour at Stoke, and even better, plays out of position in midfield. Fixtures from GW18 inclusive are AVL WIG bla liv WBA - tasty, now I'm tempted to get him!
The alternative is Santon, 4.2, who looks nailed on at Newcastle now with missing defenders and Saylor out for the season. Fixtures from GW18 inclusive are bol liv MUN QPR ful which isn't as good, but Newcastle have an okay defence still judging by today's match and there's perhaps three good matches there.

Hmm, Shotton could be a shout, although I already have Wilko who I'm guessing should be back from injury soon? I also have Simpson, so don't think I'll be doubling on NEW with those fixtures. Cheers for the advice though, definitely something to consider....

Yeah I'm in the same boat with Raylor and Wilko, both doubtful! May just end up doing a boring Wilko > Shotton transfer, but transfers are precious now. Come on Arsenal, let's make it two losses in a row for City today!

Mate, if we win today we are right back in this title hunt. Never thought I'd be saying that after the 8-2 humiliation!!

The key to stifling City is keeping Silva quiet. I'm a tad concerned they'll push him up on Djourou, who is far from solid. That said, we have the beating of their back four with super RVP and our pacy wingers. Goals in this game I reckon . 2-1 Arsenal (RVP, Ramsey (lol), Aguero)

Yeah agreed, Silva is central to everything City do (and Djourou is a bit of a sleepy defender). Matches where Silva is quiet are generally matches City don't win - generally quiet against Chelsea, and same against Napoli and Bayern Munich. I think we'll be counting on Song playing an absolute blinder of a game because as DM he'll have to stifle Silva and possibly Yaya and Nasri if Mancini plays attacking. Interesting though because I've noticed this season when Mancini plays defensive he tends to get punished - by that I mean 4-5-1 with Milner and Barry instead of his attacking mids. And when he does attack, he can be punished on the counter by pace as Napoli did. That's very encouraging because we have a bloody fast attack.

Might have a small flutter on a win! Good luck!

I wasn't too surprised to see Mata go off. But Mikel IN??? Goodness gracious.

Even McEachran or Torres are better DMs.

And then ofcourse, Studge OFF was the turning point of the game IMO. We've come to be so reliant on his runs down the right wing that he usually keeps 1-2 def and 1 DM occupied all the time.

Yeah 😕 I expected a 3-0 or 4-0 by HT but it was a very pathetic display. Complacency took over methinks. Sturridge & Romeu were the only 2 players playing above par. And AVB cunningly subbed both of them out.

Though I'm sure he didn't initially plan to sub Romeu out at HT & we ended up playing 4-2-3-1 in response to Wigan's 5-4-1.

What has Obi Mikel done in his time at Chelsea? Always slowing down the game, passing sideways and the occasional lapse of concentration.
As a United supporter am glad we did not get him after that dispute and on top of that we got 12 million as compensation. He surely needs to leave Chelsea

Honestly he hasn't done much. Managers post-Mourinho love the kid cos' he was a Mourinho era find.

As long as Essien was around, he didn't get much gametime & hence, didn't get much stick for any folly he committed here and there. Now we're seeing his real side. I can bet he won't even be on the bench when Essien returns.

Essien am afraid is turning into an injury cursed player. He has played few games over the last 3 years and he is now almost hitting 30 years. Fantastic player and his dynamite goal against Arsenal in 2007 is one of my favourite.

his ict score is pretty good, but that's mainly due to creativity not influence, i don't think he'll get baps tbh , sorry.
