News of Nathan Ake’s potential return to parent club Chelsea postponed yesterday’s publication of our latest Watchlist article. Twenty-four hours later, Ake’s departure has now been confirmed, with a far-reaching effect on Fantasy Premier League managers.

Ake was found in 9.8% of FPL squads having been acquired by more than 287,000 managers since Gameweek 13.

Previously ranked in our top five heading into the weekend, Ake’s return to the Chelsea squad has now seen him ousted from our Watchlist – at least until we gain insight into his role in Antonio Conte’s squad.

It’s presumed that Ake will return as back-up across the central defensive positions and, possibly even provide competition for the 8.9% owned Marcos Alonso at left wing-back. Certainly Conte has suggested as much…

“Ake gives me important options, because we are playing with three central defenders. He can play on the left, he can play in the middle. Also it’s important to see during a training session if he can play as a wing-back.”

Alonso’s stock takes a knock amidst such chatter: the Spaniard was already toppled at the summit of our rankings with a more testing schedule ahead, but now also falls below team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta with confidence dented.

We can only await developments and perhaps comment from Conte ahead of the Gameweek 21 visit to Leicester City.

With new uncertainty in the Chelsea defensive roster, Spurs’ Danny Rose is now ranked as the most desirable heavy-hitter option, with Azpilicueta and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin trailing.

Priced at 6.0 and owned by a modest 8.3%, Rose has become a more significant factor in the Spurs attack of late and has also been delegated dead-ball duties from the right side.

The one caveat remains ill-discipline – he continues to accumulate yellow cards at an alarming rate, having picked up his eighth caution of the season against Chelsea, ensuring that he is just two yellow cards from a two-match ban.

Rose climbs to second in our rankings but trails West Bromwich Albion’s Chris Brunt at the top.

Having averaged 5.1 points per game over the last nine Gameweeks, playing predominantly “out of position” as a winger, Brunt claims top spot thanks to his attacking promise and an array of favourable fixtures (tot, SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU, CPL).

He has registered two goals and three assists in his last seven outings, and, given that the Baggies have failed to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 12, his output could spike if Tony Pulis’ men can convert the upcoming schedule into defensive returns.

Everton’s Leighton Baines. is a major climber in our latest update.

An established Fantasy favourite in previous seasons, Baines is now back on our radar as a result of reclaiming penalty duties for the Toffees and with an obliging schedule ahead.

Setting us back 5.4, Baines has also earned two assists over the last five Gameweeks to underline a rejuvenated attacking promise.

Ronald Koeman’s side have also registered clean sheets in two of their last three matches, and with kind fixtures following the Gameweek 21 clash against Manchester City (cpl, sto, BOU, mid, SUN), Baines’ recent form could be maintained.

A soft upcoming schedule (swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL) also affords Hector Bellerin a notable rise up our standings, although priced at 6.5 in FPL, the Spaniard may struggle to divert traffic away from the likes of the cheaper Brunt and Baines in particular.

Bellerin is also currently an injury doubt, having missed Arsenal’s FA Cup tie with Preston; details on that setback and the prognosis remain vague.

Manchester United’s Phil Jones retains a mid-place ranking as he continues to offer value in a much-improved backline.

With Eric Bailly absent at the Africa Cup of Nations, Jones’ security of start has been boosted. The injury to Marcos Rojo in United’s FA Cup win over Reading does require monitoring, however. The Argentine a big factor in the recent form shown by Jones and Jose Mourinho’s defence.

With Ake now absent from our ladder, Charlie Daniels has become more difficult to ignore as an option in the Bournemouth ranks.

Outstanding recent form is somewhat countered by an increasing ownership (10.3%) and a 5.2 price point which appears rather lavish for a member of Eddie Howe’s rearguard.

Nonetheless, Daniels has proven to be a hugely effective asset bombing forward from left-back, having returned a goal and two assists in his previous two outings.

Daniels’ short-term fixtures (hul, WAT CPL) promise further returns and perhaps warrant that extra outlay.

In the mid to long-term, however, Adam Smith, at 4.7 is now back on the radar as an option and a cheaper alternative. Smith may well replace Daniels in our rankings once those imminent attractive ties pass by.

Given Southampton’s outstanding fixtures, Virgil van Dijk should be claiming a higher position in our rankings.

However, recent form and the continued speculation surrounding the future and starting role of Jose Fonte creates concern.

Van Dijk is an outstanding individual and has recently shown his threat in attacking areas with two goals in his last three outings in all competitions. However, Claude Puel’s side are without a shut-out in their last four, including their recent FA Cup tie with Norwich City.

Should Fonte remain frozen out, Maya Yoshida, at just 4.2, could also become an active, albeit riskier, alternative to cover the Saints’ schedule.

Middlesbrough are currently displaying more prosperous form having shut-out Leicester City and FA Cup opponents Sheffield Wednesday in their last two.

In Calum Chambers they boast a 4.4 option who will likely earn renewed attention in the light of the fall-out from Ake’s recall.

Aitor Karanka’s men have kept clean sheets in three of their last four at the Riverside in the Premier League, with the Arsenal loanee picking up bonus points in two of those matches.

Middlesbrough offer home fixtures against West Ham, West Brom and Everton, along with a trip to Watford in their next five.

A reminder that you will find our full current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button in the right slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

West Ham should try and Sign Troy Deeney.

    Anyways...

    Is Antonio a decent punt?

No. Well, it depends what you mean by punt.

I just transferred him in for Sigurdsson. I think he's a great set-and-forget option and I intend to keep him till I wildcard all being well.

Hey there, can you point me to your post about defenders being better value / underestimated / or something along those lines? On WC, and thinking of shifting some money from Mid to Def.

            Yep! Thanks.

Just noted that your point was about ppg overall - wondering if there was or can be a ppg distinction between starting 3/4 defenders and bench fodder.

Trying to decide if good 4th and 5th defenders are worth it considering the team structure. (i.e. It's easier to find cash later by downgrading a single mid instead of two or three defenders)

This is too long a subject for a post on FFS really. But what I was referring to was PPG from your playing defenders.

Bench fodder defenders (like Amat) are a complete waste of time in my view. Why pay 4.1m when for 0.3m more you can have a useful defender that (a) you can use in a rotation, and (b) might be a helpful 1st or 2nd sub when fixtures suit?

Constructing a defence usually requires a mix between higher-priced (play every week or almost every week) defenders and cheaper options that you will use in rotation. When figuring out rotations you need always to be looking 8-10 weeks ahead, not short-term.

If I were planning a cheaper wildcard defence to play 3 at the back right now I'd probably do something like this: Bellerin/Chambers/Prödl/Evans/Pieters. Bellerin I would plan to switch to Alderweireld or Azpilicueta in GW 26. The other 4 defenders would rotate 2 from 4. Cost 24.3m.

For 4 at the back I'd go with something like Bellerin/Gibson/Dann/Prödl/Brunt. Same comments re. Bellerin but rotating the others 3 from 4. Something like that. Cost 25.1m. Of course you could also use this one to play 3 at the back if your budget allowed, in that case it would almost always give you a good defender to use as 1st or 2nd sub.

You could also take 2 premium defenders (maybe Bellerin and Baines) and rotate 2 from 3 with the others (maybe Gibson, Dann and Brunt). That would cost 26.1m.

Your comment about 'finding cash' doesn't work with this approach, however. If you are fixated on squeezing in the 7 best attackers you can find the defence will always suffer. You need to settle to 6 attackers (4-4-2 hybrid maybe) or to only 3 premium attackers and the rest being selected for value.

Well, there you go, that post is already too long and it has only skimmed the surface really. I hope it is of some help. But bear in mind that what I have said runs counter to most opinion on here.

Cheers, Ruth, I appreciate the time taken to respond in depth.
Helpful to understand that you were referring to PPG from playing defenders. Changes the conclusion completely.

Ruth:"But bear in mind that what I have said runs counter to most opinion on here."
I would usually be in the other popular camp too, this season and choosing to use the 2nd WC now is forcing me to think differently. That's a good thing.

Ruth:"You need to settle to 6 attackers (4-4-2 hybrid maybe) or to only 3 premium attackers and the rest being selected for value."
Yes, I've decided to do this. Picking the one who I think is most important and involved in each of the top 6-7 teams. (FPLwise, not in reality). So it's Ibra, Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Coutinho/Lukaku. Set and forget.

Regarding 2-3 premium defenders - we (atleast me) normally never bench them, but I think that's because we generally dont have confidence in other cheap defenders.

Maybe I'm too aware that I wont have a WC to maximise bench boost, SGWs and DGWs, so spreading quality around the squad might be needed right away.

Right now, am toying with 5 options >5M. May chicken out and reduce to 4, but atleast that, so I can be bold in rotating them.

                Let's see how it goes.

                1. Ruth_NZ

                  Good luck. 🙂

I think your 5 attackers are pretty spot on, personally I'd prefer Lukaku to Coutinho within those. Then add a value midfielder for 4-4-2 or two value midfielders for 3-5-2.

It's very similar to mine, I have Antonio, Sanchez, Alli, Hazard, Phillips, Zlatan, Lukaku as my 7 attackers. I was in a 4-4-2 structure but switched to 3-5-2 because of Phillips' value and fixtures.

May I just put an invisible star next to Dann for you if you are going 4-4-2? I really think he has a big upside potential in the next 8-10 weeks.

Last two things, if on wildcard:

                  1. City and United will quite likely have a blank gameweek in GW26. Same goes for either Liverpool and Leicester or Arsenal and Southampton. Be careful not to have too many players from those. This week's 1st leg games may give you a better steer on which teams to be careful about.

                  2. A fair few teams will have a blank gameweek in GW28. The only games certain to be played that week as it stands are Bournemouth v West Ham and Everton v WBA. Having a few players from those teams will help to avoid problems that week. That's one of the reasons I prefer Lukaku to Coutinho as an option. It wouldn't take much for me to look at Barkley as well.

                    Cheers.

Dann's an interesting pick, I do think his goal involvement is very less compared to my other picks.

Noted on the two points for WC. Staying clear of City, and have 6 from the 4 teams playing gw28. 3 or 4 should retain their spot in my team till then.

Look at last season with Dann, or the season before.

Big Sam's teams specialise in set pieces. And Dann specialises in getting on the end of them. His potential is much bigger than this season's stats will show.

    B) Rose

    C) Alonso

The recall of Aké has served a very useful purpose for me.

It has confirmed beyond doubt that 50% or more of the comments made on here are uninformed guesswork and surmise masquerading as informed opinion and fact. Hot air basically.

There's nothing wrong with not knowing, why should everyone know everything about a player just out of the youth ranks? But obviously that doesn't stop people from making statements and assumptions and talking as if they do.

More research, less hot air might be a good idea. It's a shame that a reader needs to know they should disregard at least 50% of what they see posted on FFS but that's what it amounts to. 😕

Happy Monday to you all 🙂

So I used my 2 FT Hazard and Origi to Alli and Defoe last week with the intention to take a hit to get Ake in for Lovren this week and boy am I happy I waited on that.

The question now is, do I:
    1) Keep Lovren and play vs UTD
    2) Keep Lovren and play Evans vs Spurs
    3) Lovren out for Chambers (-4)
    4) Lovren out for Daniels (-4)

Defence is currently Vertonghen, Alonso, Lovren, Evans, Amat with Rose and Brunt coming in for Jan and Evans in the next few weeks probably.

    Thanks all. 🙂

Very similar picks, but only way B trumps A in your options is if it's Phillips + an attacking 4.5 defender like Friend or if you can afford a bit more then Daniels. Otherwise the attacking potential of A wins.

I'd personally go for B, just because Phillips' returns are more consistent currently. Things could change though.

All this talk of Ake being back at Chelsea and what his role is going to be is rather funny to watch as an outsider. As a Chelsea supporter, I personally don't think Conte brought him back to immediately replace anybody. I think it's simply more of a case, as has been said previously, that he covers a variety of positions in our squad and that is undoubtedly handy given the departures of Mikel and Oscar along with the added competition that his return will have on our fullbacks.

To me at least, his return now in January will likely see the departure of Ivanovic in this window, which will further reduce our wage bill allowing Conte to bring in more of his targets before the end of the season.

    Interesting times ahead. 🙂

It really is funny seeing the reactions of everyone. If people like the FFS community are reacting like this then how do you think the novices are? Kinda explains why we end up seeing such crazy price rises and drops whenever something small happens nowadays. Besides the price algorithm of course.

Bit of early FA Cup planning.

This year the Quarter Finals fall on 11 March 2017, the same weekend as game week 28 making postponements for some teams highly likely. After this weekends results and Premiership casualties, two fixtures should already go ahead without problem so far.

    Bournemouth v West Ham
    Everton West Brom

Don't shoot the messenger but as the game weeks progress some of the following might be worth keeping on the radar to help get a team of 11 on the pitch.

    Bournemouth-Daniels, Cook, Smith, Stanislas
West Ham- Antonio, Payet, Carroll, Cresswell
    Everton- Lukaku, Barkley, Baines, Coleman
West Brom- Foster, Brunt, Macauley, Phillips, Rondon

Of the other teams already knocked out, Swansea are scheduled to travel to Hull once again making that a game with a strong chance of going ahead. Stoke are due to visit Man City at the Etihad which could be a doubt as you would expect Man City to progress reasonably far in the competition and one of Sunderland or Burnley who face a third round replay against each other will move closer to a week 28 fixture at either Middlesbrough or Liverpool respectively when the loser is knocked out of the competition.

Hope this is of some help, it's something I'll be monitoring after a real scramble to get a full 11 out at the same time last year.

Worth remembering other teams will join this list too so I'll be keeping an eye on the draw for any high profile pairings where a big club may be knocked out. I'm selfishly hoping Chelsea make way as I'll own three players of theirs next week whilst Spurs march on through to hinder my ML rival. Lukaku and Coleman are definitely on my wish list in a couple of weeks time.
