This article aims to help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers in their choice for the best captaincy option for the forthcoming Gameweek by combining form and fixtures.

Additionally, I have also included a ‘clean sheet potential’ table to help assess the Gameweek’s best defensive assets.

Before I take a look at Gameweek 25’s best captaincy targets, let’s have a quick recap on how I use form and fixtures to come to achieve this.

REFINING THE ODDS

For this method, I am going to take the top six most popular captaincy options and rank them 1-6 ranking according to the difficulty of the fixture, which is worked out using goals conceded, big chances conceded and shots in the box (Sib) conceded from the last four games.

I then apply the same ranking to form, looking at total points per game, goals and assists over the last four games. The form table will include Home and Away PPG but these sections will only come into play in terms of the results when the total PPG of 2 players are the same.

The article includes the ‘clean sheet potential’ table, which is worked out with the form and fixtures elements from the captaincy section and then combined with clean sheet odds to give a total ranking based on clean sheet potential. This section will include the top five teams.

SUCCESS

What defines a successful captaincy pick according to this method? The ultimate success will be whether the top pick highlighted by the method is the top scorer of the six options from the FFS Captain poll. A monthly average will also be worked out to find the cumulative points to see if this method or the FFS Captain polls are proving to be more successful.

On a weekly basis, success will be defined as:

  • Explosive = 10+ points
  • Success = 7-9 points
  • Average = 4-6 points
  • Fail = no attacking returns

There will be a review article ready for next week.

Now let’s take a look at Gameweek 25’s results….

Sigurdsson617
Lukaku415

Goals conceded in last four opponents’ home or away fixtures + goals scored in players last four home or away games according to the gameweek fixture.

Taking form and fixtures into account, Gylfi Sigurdsson is most likely to deliver attacking returns, according to this method. He pips Romelu Lukaku to the top spot by virtue of each respective fixture’s form.

The Swansea man features third on the form table this week with a total of 7 points per game thanks to three goals and one assist in the last four game weeks. The Icelander leaps to the top of the fixture table this week, he faces a Leicester side who have conceded 10 goals, eight big chances and a table topping 48 goal attempts in the box.

*Gabriel Jesus finishes third in the results table this week, however, it’s worth pointing out that his statistics are only from the three games he has featured, one of which was for nine minutes only. He does, however, still sit atop the form table with an impressive 8.33 PPG from his 189 minutes of football so far, bagging three goals and one assist in the process. The Brazilian finishes fourth in the fixture table this week and it is worth mentioning that Bournemouth have conceded 13 goals in the last four weeks, more than Leicester. Only the Cherries low goal attempts in the box stops Jesus finishing higher in the table. The stats suggest Jesus could be a strong candidate for the armband this weekend.

This method offers caution when captaining Zlatan Ibrahimovic this weekend, the Manchester United forward finishes last in the results table. This two goals and no assists in the last four Gameweeks give him a total PPG of 4.25. The fixture table doesn’t make great reading for would be captainers either, as Watford have only conceded four goals, three big chances and 32 goal attempts in the box in the last four Gameweeks, which may suggest the Hornets are tightening up at the back. There’s further grim reading for backers of the big Swede as Manchester United have scored just 36 goals, the lowest of any top six side.

I think another plus point for Siggy is that Leicester and ranieri will see this game as one they can get points from, therefore unlikely to sit back and try and frustrate which could be said for many of the other games this week.

And Ranieri should be right to think so... I like Sigurdsson, but Swansea are clear relegation candidates. Thorougly outplayed by Man C in the first half last week, leading to underestimation in the second half and almost robbing a point. Very lucky win vs Liverpool. Lucky again vs a superior-looking and commanding Southampton. Outclassed and shut out by Arsenal and Bournemouth, before these two wins... Good performance in the win at Palace, though, except from the first part of the second half.

All-in-all, hardly convincing I'd say, and Leicester could very well win here.
I find a Sanchez-explosion vs Hull much more likely, and expect an assist or goal at best for Sigurdsson.

This takes no account of the opposition in the last 4, Watford have had 3 easy games bar Arsenal whereas Leicester have played Chelsea Southampton & United in last 4.

Have the same. Bournemouth conceded 6 goals, but 4 was real presents. Many injuries, after Ake left the are not solid in defence. They are fighting and running with attacking mindset, often forgetting about defence at all. Jesus may score a brace again, or Silva with Toure and KDB may score a brace. Jesus is good in creating chances so baps are possible.

Leicester on the other hand is in deep crisis. Huth and Morgan out of form. But Ndidi and King played well in the cup. May bouce back.
Siggy can have 5 points per goal and assist threat is just a bonus. Also can get some baps.

City is better as a team in general and Bournemouth can be like WestHam last time in league and cup.

      Currently on Jesus.

For any Ibra doubters, go with your gut. Always with your gut. If I had Sig, he would be my captain, no doubt. As I don't have him, I fancy Sanchez to do well against a Dawsonless Hull.

    Cheers YMA for the article.

I love this article, and I really appreciate you taking the time to produce it.
Is there any chance you could list all 20 teams in their Clean Sheet order please? Not sure if you are allowed to write the percentage chance of a Clean Sheet next to each team, but that would be a cool addition in my opinion.

Again, great work, and I look forward to this article every GW.

I clearly think that Watford's numbers flatter to deceive in this article. In the last four they played Boro and Burnley at home and a demoralized Arsenal side. They conceded two away to Bournemouth, which is their average away this season.

Man United have scored few goals at home, but they are creating a lot of chances. Watford doesn't frustrate like Hull and Boro defence. I think United will smash Watford and Ibra to be heavily involved.

    D. Sigurdsson

While providing a good quick look, the article takes a jab at expected points, not so much at the what one might call the variance around that expectation. This is minimal for some players (best example: Costa), and to me that makes them less attractive as a captain. Applied to this week: Sigurdsson can be expected to deliver, but I doubt he'll score a hattrick. Lukaku has the ability to explode, but away at Middlesborough (and back to back hattricks)? I don't know. I would go for Sanchez or Ibra. They both have home fixtures against weak sides. Gomes drops a lot of rebounds. Hull recently has looked better defensively but might open up if Arsenal scores early. With Sanchez getting 5 points per goal I'd go with him.

Anyone considering getting in kun as a differential this weekend. Have jesus already but considering having the double act. Both will see game time versus Bournemouth and both will score. Game is Monday then a blank for 8 days until the Monaco champions league match. Gives enough time for rest and set up for kun to get some returns as no one expects him to play.
